US President Donald Trump drew a parallel between US strikes on Iran and Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour decades ago, as he defended the Iran war during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Washington on March 19.

"Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbour?" joked Trump.

The Japanese attack on the US naval base in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii on Dec 7, 1941, killed 2,390 Americans, and the US declared war on Japan the next day.

00:00Okay, how about one more question for the Prime Minister?
00:04Let me pick a beautiful-looking person from Japan.
00:10A question for the Prime Minister.
00:12Go ahead.
00:12Go ahead, please.
00:14Of course, no, Japan and the U.S. are very good friends.
00:18But one question, why didn't you tell U.S. allies in Europe and Asia, like Japan, about the war before
00:27attacking Iran?
00:28We are very confused about Japanese citizens.
00:31Well, one thing, you don't want to signal too much.
00:34You know, when we go in, we went in very hard.
00:37And we didn't tell anybody about it because we wanted surprise.
00:41Who knows better about surprise than Japan?
00:44Okay?
00:45Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?
00:48Okay?
00:49Right?
00:50You know, he's asking me.
00:53No, you believe in surprise, I think, much more so than us.
00:56And we had a surprise.
00:59And we did.
01:00And because of that surprise, we knocked out, the first two days, we probably knocked out 50% of what
01:06we, and much more than we anticipated doing.
01:09So, if I go and tell everybody about it, there's no longer a surprise.
01:14Right?
01:15Okay.
01:15.
01:26.
01:26.
01:26.
