00:01:52And it is time for the campaign reveal of Doom.
00:01:55I'm so excited.
00:01:56My name is Alex Goldenboy-Mendez.
00:01:57And I'm joined by two incredible people.
00:01:59We have Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin from It Software.
00:02:02Gentlemen, how are you doing?
00:02:03We're doing great.
00:02:04Yeah, thanks.
00:02:04It's going to be exciting.
00:02:05I'm personally pumped for Doom.
00:02:07I've been streaming the multiplayer beta quite a bit.
00:02:09But we're not here to talk about multiplayer today.
00:02:11We're actually here to talk about, in my opinion, what is the meat and potatoes of Doom.
00:02:15Which has always been the gruesome, as we saw in the trailer, campaign.
00:02:21And honestly, I think that a lot of people are really pumped for this.
00:02:25Because it takes a lot of new things and merges it with all the old things from back in the
00:02:31day.
00:02:32Marty, I did want to start with you, though.
00:02:33What was, I guess, kind of like the inspiration going into this?
00:02:36Because Doom is not, this is Doom 4.
00:02:39This is actually Doom, straight up, from the beginning.
00:02:42Yeah, absolutely.
00:02:44First of all, it's super exciting to be able to show this stuff.
00:02:46Yeah.
00:02:47We've been waiting a little bit to get back to the campaign.
00:02:50We've done a lot with the multiplayer, obviously.
00:02:52But it's really fun to be able to show this stuff.
00:02:55And yeah, when we introduced the game, we said we kind of went back and started with what inspired us
00:03:02about Doom.
00:03:03and what was the kind of DNA of Doom in and of itself.
00:03:07And you come to some pretty big things right off the bat.
00:03:11Just big, badass guns, amazing demons, and movement being a really key, fundamental part of the gameplay.
00:03:18So we focused on combat.
00:03:20We're going to show just a ton of combat today.
00:03:25Several different levels.
00:03:28And yeah, that was really the origin of where we started.
00:03:31Yeah, it's awesome, and Hugo, I know you're going to be playing for us.
00:03:34You're holding the controller right now, so you're going to get ready to dive into it.
00:03:38I think so.
00:03:38I hope that we get to see chainsaws.
00:03:41Yes, there will be chainsaws.
00:03:43There will be blood.
00:03:44There will be blood.
00:03:45Oh, there will be blood.
00:03:46Lots of blood.
00:03:47Of course, we know that you guys want to watch the gameplay, so honestly, we might as well not beat
00:03:52around the bush.
00:03:53We should just jump right into it.
00:03:54We should, absolutely.
00:03:55And show it off, because I'm pretty sure Twitch chat will pop up with some Resident Sleeper pretty soon.
00:03:59We don't want that.
00:04:00We want you to spam Doomguy.
00:04:02So let's go ahead, jump into some gameplay.
00:04:05Sure.
00:04:05Hugo, drive us through this.
00:04:06And Marty, why don't you set it up for us as well?
00:04:09What are we seeing here right now?
00:04:11This is actually a pretty early level in the campaign.
00:04:14It's the second kind of mission you're on here.
00:04:18It takes place in what's called the Resource Operations Facility in the UAC.
00:04:24You've basically, at the very beginning of the game, you've woken up and fought your way out of a secret
00:04:29bunker that you're in.
00:04:31You don't know why.
00:04:32You don't have a really good idea of what's happened.
00:04:34And you really just start tearing things apart.
00:04:38So if I don't mind, if you don't mind answering this, I notice the characters, you know, the different demons
00:04:44and all that stuff and monsters, they flash with, like, orange and blue.
00:04:48I know that that has been talked about before, but I guess for some new viewers who may not have
00:04:53seen Doom before, what does that actually indicate?
00:04:55Yeah, that's kind of our glory kill system.
00:04:58When you've done a certain amount of damage to an enemy, your visor and your HUD highlights them in that
00:05:06way.
00:05:07When they turn kind of that bluish, that means they're stunned and they're kind of in a state of, we
00:05:13call it a stagger state.
00:05:15And they're particularly vulnerable.
00:05:18And you can shoot them, you can run up to them, and then glory kill them.
00:05:22And when you get close enough, they turn orange.
00:05:26That's all, you know, that stuff can be turned off through the settings if somebody doesn't like that, wants a
00:05:31little bit more of a challenge for themselves.
00:05:35Speaking of challenge, as a matter of fact, ultra-violent mode?
00:05:38Oh, yes, of course.
00:05:40Hugo's playing on Hurt Me Plenty.
00:05:43We didn't want him dying too much.
00:05:46But, you know, the challenge of playing the game is actually a really big thing.
00:05:50Here he's bringing up our automat station he touched.
00:05:53You find those throughout the game.
00:05:55Without that, you basically kind of go through and you're revealing parts of the level as you go through.
00:06:02But secrets, finding secrets is a big deal.
00:06:04So here he revealed kind of a secret space by getting the automap and seeing that there was a space
00:06:10above him that he might not have realized before.
00:06:13Nice, nice.
00:06:14And we did see just there Olivia Pierce, who actually is going to be a central figure in this story.
00:06:22We probably don't want to dive too deep.
00:06:24Because clearly we want people to discover that when a game releases.
00:06:28But I would say for Doom single-player people.
00:06:32Sorry, I love the multiplayer so much.
00:06:34For Doom single-player guys, you know, it's a little bit of a change of pace, right?
00:06:38Because Doom had traditionally told stories through, you know, just like segments of lines and sentences.
00:06:44Like, oh, this situation's happening here and so on and so forth.
00:06:47Yeah.
00:06:47Really simplistic stuff.
00:06:48You guys are bringing in, you know, an antagonist into this to really help drive the narrative for, you know,
00:06:54why our character is doing what they're doing here.
00:06:57Yeah, for sure.
00:06:58We don't, you know, we don't put story front and center at all.
00:07:01Doom's about doing this.
00:07:02I mean, it's about, you know, fighting demons and using awesome guns.
00:07:06So it hasn't been a huge, huge focus necessarily.
00:07:09But, you know, as I mentioned, we've tried to infuse a lot of mystery and, you know, a story that
00:07:16can, that will keep you kind of playing and digging if you want it.
00:07:20It's, you know, we tend to, we kind of say like we keep it pushed, you know, pushed out of
00:07:26the way a little bit.
00:07:27And have you, have you diving in to try and figure it out.
00:07:31Here's another example, you know, he kind of is seeing that there was a suit of armor up there that
00:07:35he missed.
00:07:37You know, again, players, players can choose to pull that up whenever they want.
00:07:40If they're, if you're, if you're really into the exploration aspect of the game and you want to find all
00:07:46the, all the secrets and you want 100%, might be something up there.
00:07:49But so is that bit there when he brings up the map visible always or is it just like, hey,
00:07:58here's this part that you may have missed.
00:08:00And then the map kind of alludes to a hint or there are even more secret portions that I probably
00:08:06will miss and the map won't tell me.
00:08:08Yeah, there's, there's absolutely.
00:08:10There's, there's, in fact, the map doesn't specifically tell you where there's, where there's secrets.
00:08:14And, and because he found the, the auto map station, it's revealing the, the whole map.
00:08:20If he wouldn't have found that, just that piece, it would only be revealing where he's, where he's going.
00:08:26Oh, really?
00:08:26Yeah.
00:08:26So, and then the auto map stations, are they like actually hidden within the map or?
00:08:31Yeah, there's, there's one in, one in each map, usually kind of towards the, towards the beginning.
00:08:35So you can try and find it or if you're, you know, if you're just more into like running and
00:08:39gunning, you know, you can, you can, you can skip them.
00:08:42Exactly.
00:08:43You can see here, actually, we've talked about the, the glory kill system a little bit, but what's one of
00:08:48the, one of the nice things about it is it's, it's really contextual.
00:08:50So you can see basically wherever he's looking on the, on the character, he's getting these, these really fluid kills
00:08:56and, and, and again, it's, it's, it's, it's completely optional to glory kill enemies.
00:09:02And, and as you get further into the game, you know, it becomes kind of strategic.
00:09:07Like you could have, you know, you could have a few guys staggered and decide, man, this is a perfect
00:09:12opportunity to take them out with a, with a bigger gun, use a rocket launcher or a gauss.
00:09:17In, in this case, you know, these are all pretty, pretty early enemies.
00:09:20This is, this is very early in the game.
00:09:21So you're mostly fighting imps and zombies.
00:09:25And the codex here.
00:09:26Tell me about this.
00:09:26Yeah, this is, this is actually one of the, the ways that the players can, can dive in and figure
00:09:31out, you know, kind of figure out the, the lore of the game.
00:09:35Again, we, we, we don't, we don't really do cut scenes and, and, you know, big cinematic moments.
00:09:39It's just not what we feel like Doom is all about.
00:09:42But we did want to, want to provide a really nice foundation for players to, to be able to, to
00:09:47understand what was going on with the UAC.
00:09:49A little bit about who you are and about, you know, and, and quite a bit about what was going
00:09:53on there.
00:09:54And, and actually give quite a bit of lore on, on the different, the different characters or the different monsters,
00:09:59the demons.
00:10:00You know, it's, it's a pretty rich universe that, that hasn't, you know, we've never been particularly explicit about some
00:10:07of these things.
00:10:07So, you know, we, I mean, we talk about how, how revenants are formed and, and there's a, there's a
00:10:12whole kind of fiction behind that.
00:10:14But again, it's, it's there if you want it.
00:10:16If you just want to, want to, you know, kind of play very naturally and just power through, you get
00:10:22that.
00:10:23Yeah, well, if, you know, if I recall correctly, one of the trailers, I'm trying to remember which trailer it
00:10:28was,
00:10:28but actually showed the construction of a cyberdemon, if I was correct.
00:10:32All right.
00:10:33And I, I mean, that I find out to be really interesting too, because, you know, Doom is a pretty
00:10:38gruesome game.
00:10:40So there's always like those instances, like I think one of the most prominent scenes in a video game for
00:10:45me,
00:10:45which is so weird is like dating back to the 360, which I can't believe I said dating back, but
00:10:49that's the world we live in now.
00:10:50Um, where I, I think it was a Quake 4, I want to say, when like you're going through the,
00:10:55the, the, I guess, construction process of like your legs being like ripped off.
00:10:59Yeah, the strogrification process.
00:11:00Yeah, and I was just like, oh my God, this is crazy, you know?
00:11:02And, and I, and I actually think that that is a pretty cool element that you guys are bringing into
00:11:07Doom.
00:11:07You're really, uh, trying to highlight the, the gruesomeness, but at the same time, not really, uh, trying to throw
00:11:14like, you know, crazy amounts of story in your face.
00:11:17And, and, and I also appreciate that it's not a shock value, right?
00:11:21It's more like I have giant guns.
00:11:23I'm going to beat the crap out of all the demons and monsters and everything that is around me.
00:11:28Yeah, definitely.
00:11:29Speaking of beating the crap out of monsters, here comes a chainsaw.
00:11:32Hugo, have fun.
00:11:34And Hugo's kind of actually been, if you're, if you're paying attention at home, he's kind of revealing a couple
00:11:38secrets.
00:11:39We're not going to, we're not going to ruin all the secrets, but, uh, but it does, it does give
00:11:42you an example of if you look around and you try to,
00:11:44do what you want, try to find, um, try to find some of the secrets, um, uh, this is actually,
00:11:50uh, I was going to actually have him turn this off,
00:11:52but, uh, he's going to turn off tutorials here, but you get a sense of, of all this type of
00:11:56things that you can, you can configure through the game.
00:11:59Um, you know, you can, you can change, you know, show, show your HUD, you can turn, you can turn
00:12:03off the entire HUD.
00:12:04Turn off the glory kill highlight if you want to.
00:12:05Turn off the glory kill highlighting, yeah.
00:12:06You can play it almost like a stripped down version where there's just, there's just you, your gun, and the
00:12:11demons.
00:12:11I saw cross hairstyles there, too.
00:12:13Yeah, yeah, you can, you can change to a simple crosshair.
00:12:16Um, something, something we actually pulled, uh, pulled across, it's kind of fun to, to, to do is field of
00:12:21view.
00:12:21Not a lot of console games.
00:12:22Thank you.
00:12:23Do, do field of view.
00:12:24If you, if you want the game to even feel just a little bit faster, just crank that up a
00:12:28little bit to 100.
00:12:29I played 110.
00:12:30Yeah, yeah.
00:12:30Straight up.
00:12:31Yeah, on the multiplayer.
00:12:32Yeah, and I, and I loved it.
00:12:33Like, a lot of my viewers on my stream were telling me, dude, just go full 110, thank me later,
00:12:38and, oh my goodness, look at that.
00:12:40That is just, that is just amazing.
00:12:42The, uh, you, you know, you, you just mentioned just not, not all gratuitous.
00:12:46The chainsaw even has a, a really specific purpose in the game, and, and as you get deeper in, uh,
00:12:52and, and you're fighting more, um, you know, heavier enemies, harder to kill enemies.
00:12:56Um, it's, uh, it, it actually serves as a means to, um, when you, when you chainsaw a guy, it
00:13:03gives you a massive dump of ammunition, um, almost enough to, to refill all your guns.
00:13:07Really?
00:13:07Uh, yeah, if you notice down there in the bottom right-hand corner, those two little, uh, uh, kind of
00:13:11markers, um, that's your chainsaw ammo, and you find ammo throughout the world, um, and different enemies, these enemies take
00:13:17only one, uh, you know, one fuel cell.
00:13:20Um, but, uh, some of the heavier guys will take all of your fuel, or three of your fuel.
00:13:24Um, so you're kind of, as you, as you get deeper, there's guys that if you get low on, on
00:13:28health, or you get low on ammo, um, you can kind of make the choice of, like, I want, I
00:13:32want a really big dump of ammo when I, when I chainsaw this guy.
00:13:35Or I want the one-hit kill, and, and you kind of spend your ammo, uh, accordingly.
00:13:40Um, so, uh, so here's a, this is, this is kind of a, you know, we, we, we, we love
00:13:45the classic elements, kind of doing them in a new way.
00:13:47Um, this is a, uh, a yellow security station.
00:13:51Um, this guy was able to pass through, I can, I can see, so, uh, um, you know, these are,
00:13:56this is, we do a lot of our storytelling and, and, um, and kind of hints and clues through the
00:14:01world, uh, in a, in a very, um, just environmental way.
00:14:04Um, that doesn't, doesn't stop you down when you, um, you know, he elected to go up there and touch
00:14:09that, so, uh, and, and it gave him a clue, like, that guy can get through there, so now he's
00:14:13kind of on a, on a quest to find, find that guy.
00:14:16Um, and, and as you can see here, too, like, we're, we're kind of touching, he's looked into some areas
00:14:21that he can't quite get into yet, um, uh, and, and, uh, and showing some branching paths, so, uh, lots
00:14:28of different ways to approach, uh, getting through the space and, and, and kind of making your way through the
00:14:33game.
00:14:33Oh, I like that pistol.
00:14:35It's nice, a little, a couple one-shot kills there.
00:14:37Yeah.
00:14:38What's the alternate fire for that, uh, to charge up?
00:14:40To charge up?
00:14:41Yeah.
00:14:43Ah, okay, okay, that's nice.
00:14:45And, and actually, since we are talking about the weapons here, um, you guys made some changes to how the
00:14:51weapons are done, modifications and all that stuff, too?
00:14:53Yeah, we'll, we'll get into, like, this again, this is pretty early in the game, so, uh, we try to,
00:14:57you know, we try to ramp the player up.
00:14:58There's a lot of, there's a lot of, kind of, mechanics and, and ideas that, uh, this, this actually being
00:15:03one of them right here, uh, that are, that are a little bit different than other games.
00:15:06You'll notice as, as he comes into this space, we've talked about, um, you know, we've talked about the way
00:15:11our combat spaces flow, uh, kind of abstract, almost like, uh, uh, uh, arenas, like skate parks, we, we tend
00:15:18to call them.
00:15:18That was, I love those, those, those kills from above are really fun, yeah.
00:15:22That's actually one of my favorites.
00:15:24I like the, the sweep.
00:15:25Yeah, but if you look at this space, it's, it's, it's, it's set up for combat, you know, I mean,
00:15:29that, that, we, we build these spaces for, for very fun combat, uh, and then, you know, visually, you know,
00:15:35make them make some sense, but, uh, but really, they're, they're built for combat.
00:15:38Um, so you'll see how he kind of moves through this world.
00:15:41This is a gore nest, um, these things are, are present.
00:15:44They kind of create these lockdown areas that when you, when you take them out, it summons, uh, it summons
00:15:49demons to kind of protect the space and, and do a bit of a last hand.
00:15:53So you always kind of see those and you, you, you rub your hands together going, this is, this is
00:15:57going to be a good fight.
00:15:58Again, this is pretty early in the game.
00:16:00So, uh, a lot of, a lot of enemies that, uh, uh, you know, kind of on the, on the
00:16:04smaller side, um, but, uh, but very acrobatic.
00:16:08That's, that's one of my favorite glory clips.
00:16:10Oh, dude, look at you.
00:16:11It's almost like you've done this before, Hugo.
00:16:14This is, uh, this actually looks pretty cool here.
00:16:16And, and, yeah, this, this section is pretty gruesome.
00:16:18Oh, my God!
00:16:19Oh, no way!
00:16:21Boom, sup, up.
00:16:23You had one job.
00:16:24That's right.
00:16:25You had one job.
00:16:26You'll get back to it.
00:16:27This, this arena is really, really fun.
00:16:29It's, it's, uh, at this point in the game, you've actually played through, uh, a few arenas.
00:16:33Um, there's some, there's, as you kind of have crossed the Martian surface at the very beginning in the, in
00:16:37the, in the first,
00:16:38mission, um, we, we kind of ramp you up.
00:16:41Again, there's, it's, it, it plays really different than a lot of modern shooters.
00:16:46Um, you know, we, we've said, you know, kind of throughout the campaign, uh, that if you, if you stop,
00:16:51you're dead.
00:16:52I mean, it's, it's all about movement.
00:16:53Well, I got, I got caught in a corner there before I died.
00:16:56Yeah, caught in a corner.
00:16:57It was a grenade to your feet.
00:16:58Pretty much, you set yourself up for failure.
00:17:00Which actually reminds me that I should probably at least give myself, I have one point.
00:17:07So, uh.
00:17:07So what are we seeing here?
00:17:09Yeah, right here, this is, um, uh, this is our kind of, uh, Praetor suit upgrade.
00:17:13So, uh, the, the suit that you wear is called the Praetor suit.
00:17:15We talk a little bit about that in the lore.
00:17:17But, um, but what he's kind of diving through here, why don't you bring those back up real quick so,
00:17:21so we can explain them.
00:17:22Um, this is, uh, this is where you upgrade.
00:17:25As you can see, right now he only has the pistol and the, and the shotgun, um, and, uh, and
00:17:29he's already received, uh, two modifications to the shotgun.
00:17:33So the, each gun has kind of a base capability that you, that you use with the right trigger.
00:17:38And then, uh, as you explore the world, you find these supply drones.
00:17:41They scan your arsenal and give you options, uh, to, to, uh, to attach a mod to this.
00:17:47So, uh, for the shotgun, he's already found the charge burst mod and the explosive shot mod.
00:17:51Um, and, uh, and then there's upgrades that you can earn through these, uh, upgrade points, uh, that you earn
00:17:58all different ways.
00:17:59Combat, exploration, uh, and that kind of stuff.
00:18:01Um, and what's nice about these is, is you actually don't have to follow the strict progression.
00:18:05You can, like, if you jump down, he could, he could choose any of those open slots.
00:18:10Um, uh, and then, and then once you've unlocked those three, you then get, uh, the, a challenge that'll allow
00:18:15you to master the gun.
00:18:17Um, and it, and it really creates this, um, this nice progression.
00:18:20You know, Doom has always been about, well, and then I'll, I'll explain this so you can get back to
00:18:23gameplay.
00:18:23Um, so his Praetor suit, um, has these different categories of upgrades.
00:18:27You get these, these points, um, through finding, um, through a lot of exploration.
00:18:32You, you find, um, these elite guards that have this chip in them and you get to spend that on
00:18:36your own suit.
00:18:37Um, so here he's gonna upgrade his dexterity or his environmental resistance, area scanning, um, equipment systems, uh, and, and
00:18:45allows you to, to, to kind of hone, hone the gameplay to, to your specific preferences.
00:18:50Yeah, and I noticed he basically had one slot on, on three categories there.
00:18:54Yeah, yeah, exactly.
00:18:56Uh, and, and that, that's a, that, that follows a, a path.
00:18:58So, you know, you kind of spend it however you want.
00:19:01If you want to, if you really are the kind of player that loves to find secrets, there's, uh, there's
00:19:05upgrades that allow you to, to do that more easily.
00:19:08Um, if you love the equipment system, um, you can continue to upgrade that.
00:19:12Um, if you want a faster experience, your dexterity stuff is really, really fun to make, uh, glory kills faster
00:19:19as you play through the game.
00:19:20Um, and, you know, Doom has always kind of been this, uh, this escalation of, of guns and demons.
00:19:26So you just, you kind of take one step on the ladder and then the demons take one step up
00:19:30and then you take one step up.
00:19:31And, uh, so we've done that through the, the collection of guns, but also the, the finding of mods, um,
00:19:37and, and then the, the, the progression through, through upgrades.
00:19:40Yeah. And I'm noticing that too, right? The, he went after the, uh, you know, that particular, the, the gore
00:19:46segment.
00:19:46Yeah.
00:19:47And, uh, you know, the, the monsters that are popping out, uh, you know, aren't your, you know, big monsters
00:19:53at this point in time.
00:19:54Right. It, I could see that ramp up potentially happening and makes me even more excited for what the, uh,
00:20:00what the future levels are going to look like.
00:20:02Oh yeah.
00:20:02Because I can only imagine how ridiculous it gets.
00:20:05And, and, uh, something I, of course don't, oh, nice. Look at that right there. Let's hit him with it.
00:20:09Uh, so, uh, something I did want to know is about maybe potential, uh, new demons and new monsters.
00:20:18Is that like something we could see or are you guys sticking to the core, uh, and what people love
00:20:23and, and, and the, and the monsters that have been around?
00:20:26A lot of the core, but, but we do have, we do have some surprises in there that I think
00:20:29people will enjoy.
00:20:30Ooh, all right.
00:20:31We're trying, we're not, we're trying not to give too much away.
00:20:33No, it's perfectly fine.
00:20:34But, uh, but yeah, we've, we've, uh, we've, we've got some, uh, yeah, some, some, some fun stuff in there.
00:20:39Nice.
00:20:40Um, uh, but you know, I mean, it kind of going back, we, we, uh, to, to your, to, to
00:20:45an earlier question about it, you know, just being Doom.
00:20:48We really did want to, um, we, we did want to start, uh, and, and we really do look at
00:20:52this as a foundation we can build on in the future.
00:20:54We really hope to build on, um, we did want to start with the things that people love and we
00:20:58love, you know, so like pinky demons and cacodemons, um, uh, hell knights, barons.
00:21:03So you'll see a lot of that stuff in, in here.
00:21:06Um, this is, again, just a, another, another little clue of following the, following the guy you're looking for.
00:21:12Yeah.
00:21:13That's my, that's my yellow key card, basically.
00:21:16That's your, like, that's your yellow key card?
00:21:17Yeah, kind of a new take on, on yellow key card.
00:21:19Okay, okay.
00:21:20That's cool.
00:21:21So, now, speaking about, uh, the missions too, um, you know, of course, uh, the community has a very deep
00:21:30appreciation for all the, you know, various missions and, you know, like they play them over and over again and
00:21:35find new ways on how to, you know, improve on their, whether it be their strategy, their approach, or just
00:21:40enjoying the design of the levels.
00:21:42Because, uh, if that's actually the one thing that I've noticed a lot about the Doom community, because I, I've
00:21:48been reading a lot of the Doom subreddit, uh, various Doom community sites.
00:21:52And, um, what I thought was, uh, pretty cool was really seeing the appreciation that these guys have for, uh,
00:21:59game design.
00:22:00Yeah.
00:22:01And the approach.
00:22:01And I think you, you touched on that a little bit, saying, like, you know, this area here is built
00:22:06for combat, right?
00:22:07And, like, you know, and, and you layered it and, and of course, I'm fully expecting the community when the

00:22:22how long can they expect each mission to be?

00:22:32from start to finish for each mission?
00:22:33You know, I, I, it really depends on how you play and, and how much time you spend.
00:22:38Uh, you know, most of our, most of our play sets, we, we do focus tests at the, at the
00:22:42studio.
00:22:43Most of our focus tests for new players who, kind of, their, their first run through, uh, of the game,
00:22:48if they're looking for a moderate number of secrets and trying to, you know, trying to upgrade their guns and
00:22:53that kind of thing.
00:22:54Um, it's, it's in the 13 to 15 hour range to get through on, on a, on a normal difficulty
00:22:59setting.
00:22:59Okay.
00:23:00Yeah, so, so.
00:23:00And then that probably scales up as you.
00:23:02Yeah, I mean, if you, if you go to ultraviolence, it really changes the way you play in, in, in
00:23:08your strategy.
00:23:09Um, and, uh, uh, but then, you know, you can, you can, you can, you can move through it, uh,
00:23:14if you play on an easy skill level and just kind of like blow through it.
00:23:17Yeah.
00:23:17You can get through it, uh, you know, quite a bit faster.
00:23:19We'll do speed runs that, uh, um, that kind of go a little bit further.

00:23:49We're going to be talking, we're, of course, talking about Doom and all the good stuff.
00:23:52Now, a pro tip for anyone who may be new to Doom, and I'm going to, I'm going to be
00:23:56very honest here.
00:23:57Because I, I, uh, appreciate Doom.
00:23:59I played it many years ago.
00:24:00Um, my background has always stemmed from console FPS games, uh, you know, such as, like, Halo or GoldenEye or
00:24:07Perfect Dark and, you know, those kinds of games.
00:24:09Uh, and I didn't actually grow up because I didn't, I couldn't afford a PC that could play a lot
00:24:14of these games back in the day.
00:24:15So I came to appreciate Doom much later into its life cycle.
00:24:20Um, but for me, I'm seeing this, and I, I'm so stoked for this game.
00:24:24And one thing I'm going to tell people who are watching, if you plan to play Doom on an easy
00:24:28mode,
00:24:30what, why, why aren't you doing that?
00:24:32Why, you know, you got to play it in the hardest difficulty setting possible.
00:24:36I'm probably going to do that.
00:24:37And, and you may not get past the first stage, but it's okay.
00:24:40We don't, we don't, we don't judge.
00:24:42Yeah, we actually, so, so difficulty levels is something that, uh, that we actually, really important to us.
00:24:49Obviously, you know, it's, and, and, you know, we want, we want people to be able to, to get through
00:24:53it, particularly new players.
00:24:54If, if you're coming to it, I wouldn't say, you know, don't let it frustrate you.
00:24:58If you, if you're going to get frustrated, back it down, because it's just fun to play the game.
00:25:02But, it is, but we, we, we, we, we have put a lot of, a lot of work into the
00:25:09difficulty settings.
00:25:10Uh, he's, he goes playing on, um, on, on, on Hurt Me Plenty.
00:25:14Um, and then the step above that is Ultraviolence.
00:25:17And then there's Nightmare on top of that.
00:25:18And Nightmare is, Nightmare is a really, really big challenge.
00:25:22Um, uh, and then we, we actually have a, uh, a really fun mode, which is, uh, and it's, it's
00:25:28really hard, which is, um, uh, Ultra Nightmare.
00:25:31Um, and, and goes, uh, it basically takes Nightmare and forces you to play it without dying.
00:25:38So, if you die, you start at the beginning of the, of the game.
00:25:41Wait, so there's a, so above Nightmare.
00:25:43There's Ultra Nightmare.
00:25:44Oh, Jesus.
00:25:46That's insane.
00:25:47Yes, exactly.
00:25:48I mean, Nightmares, you know, kind of suck.
00:25:51Nightmare's hard.
00:25:52Nightmare's hard.
00:25:52But you know what, it's, it's interesting because it, uh, it actually changes the way you, um, uh, it, it
00:25:58changes the way you think about, uh, the combat.
00:26:00Because you're, you're really, you're, you're, you're, you're always moving.
00:26:04You're always keeping that, that stuff, uh, ahead of you.
00:26:07Yeah.
00:26:07And, um, and, uh, uh, and, and really paying attention to, to what's going on.
00:26:13And, and some of the early, some of the easier difficulties, you know, you can take a hit or two.
00:26:17But in Nightmare, you, you've really, really got to be on the move.
00:26:22All right, so now tell me about this section here.
00:26:26Yeah, so this, this is the Lazarus facility, um, and, uh, this is, this is, uh, a little bit more
00:26:32than halfway into the game.
00:26:33Um, and, and at this point you've got, you can kind of see architecturally and, and visually it's, it's quite
00:26:38a different, uh, quite a different experience.
00:26:41Um, uh, this place is pretty overrun.
00:26:43This is, this is really the cult of the UAC.
00:26:45I mentioned that we've, we've tried to really infuse the UAC with a bit more.
00:26:49You know, I think when we were talking earlier, I said, you know, we've tried to infuse the UAC with
00:26:52a lot more, um,
00:26:53I almost don't want to talk over this so people don't hear it.
00:26:56Um, but infuse the UAC with a lot more just kind of weird, you know, just, we've made them very
00:27:01weird.
00:27:02Um, and, and, because they are weird.
00:27:03I mean, they, they, they experiment on demons.
00:27:05It's definitely, like, uh, kind of self-aware, too.
00:27:08It's, it's tongue-in-cheek.
00:27:09It's meant to be fun.
00:27:11Yeah.
00:27:11Like, like, like this line right here.
00:27:13Any questions or concerns on the initiative to weaponize the demons?

00:27:28Yeah, well, and I think that's actually, uh, I think that's actually pretty cool.
00:27:32You know, again, when you think about the other Dooms, right, um, Doom 1 and Doom 2, uh, definitely, you
00:27:40know, it had its, had its layer of story, but it wasn't one of those things that was, like, beating
00:27:45you over the head with it.
00:27:46Yeah, definitely.
00:27:47Um, but then.
00:27:47This is actually what the game is all about right here.
00:27:49Yeah, it's like.
00:27:50It's about the weapons.
00:27:51Awesome guns, yeah, and how you're going to use them.
00:27:53And, and kind of getting a sneak peek here of, of, uh, of all of the types of, uh, upgrades.
00:27:58Again, at this point in the game, you, you've got, you've got a lot of the guns.
00:28:01You've got most of the mods.
00:28:02If you've, if you've found the, uh, the mod drones that do the delivery.
00:28:06He has so many points right now.
00:28:07Yeah, he's, he's got a lot of points, so he's just kind of, this is, we're, we're, we're, uh, doing
00:28:12what we call dev load into, so, so that we can jump ahead.
00:28:15Um, so we just jumped ahead into the game, so he's, we kind of set him up, so we've got
00:28:19a lot of points.
00:28:19Kind of a rough approximation of what you would have in the game.
00:28:23Um, here he's going to upgrade, you know, upgrade his suit a little bit more to kind of be more
00:28:26in line with, uh, uh, with, with this challenge.
00:28:29It's funny, actually, when you're, when you're playing like this sometimes at the office, somebody will try to play a
00:28:33later level, uh, without actually upgrading, um, and, uh, and they'll have a lot of, you know, they'll have a
00:28:39hard time.
00:28:39And they'll be like, man, this is too hard.
00:28:41Um, and, like, did you, did you, did you do your upgrades?
00:28:44Um, I wonder who is going to be the person that plays Ultra Nightmare, no upgrades.
00:28:51That, that, that would be hard.
00:28:53How hard would that be?
00:28:53So, we, we have, we have, um, yeah, we have a couple people at the office that have gotten about
00:29:01a little over a halfway through, um, without dying.
00:29:05But no, nobody internally has made it all the way through Ultra Nightmare without dying.
00:29:09So, um, we, we have a way to test it so that we know that it works, um, but as
00:29:13far as purely playing it exactly how it's, uh, how, how somebody might do it in the wild, um, nobody's
00:29:19done it yet.
00:29:20So, it's really, it's, it's going to be one of those things that when it comes out, it's going to
00:29:22be fun to see, uh, see somebody do it.
00:29:25And, and it, it, it, it's, it's interesting because it's one of those things like, you think, man, somebody would
00:29:28be really frustrated if they get all the way through the game and they die, you know, towards the end.
00:29:32Uh, one, it was, we had a contest, uh, a couple weeks ago of people trying to get through it.
00:29:37Um, and one guy got, uh, about halfway through, he died at, he died, um, and, uh, kind of put
00:29:43the controller down and thought, man, I love this game.
00:29:45And, and that's the kind of, that, that's just the, the fun we feel internally.
00:29:49Yeah, the pinky.
00:29:50He's, uh, he's such a cool enemy.
00:29:52This is so cool.
00:29:53Hugo, Hugo just exposed his weak spot right there.
00:29:56It's, he's, he's fun because if you, um, he's really tough if you try to take him on from the,
00:30:00from the front.
00:30:01Um, but, uh, but, uh, if you, um, if you shoot him in the tail, he's, he's much, much weaker
00:30:07from the tail.
00:30:07So you can use, um, so you can use, uh, different, uh, different guns and different combinations of guns to
00:30:14kind of exploit that weakness in him.
00:30:16That makes sense.
00:30:17So, Hugo, you've been playing this quite a bit.
00:30:20Yes.
00:30:20I kind of want to get your, your thoughts, uh, who's, like, probably one of your, like, favorite demons to
00:30:26face off against?
00:30:26Probably the pinky, because of what Marty said.
00:30:29Like, we, we work hard to make sure that the, uh, the enemies really make you think.
00:30:33Even though it's, like, a full-on action game, you know, it's all about killing demons.
00:30:37There's definitely, definitely, like, a lot of strategy that goes on while you're fighting.
00:30:41And, uh, the pinky really introduces that, because he's armored from the front, weaker from behind.
00:30:46You kind of have to game him to get him to, uh, charge you so you can spin around to
00:30:50his backside and, uh, hit him where he's not armored.
00:30:53There are different mods and stuff that you can use to do that.
00:30:57So, it's, uh, sorry, right in contrast.
00:31:00It, it makes it pretty fun.
00:31:01You do what you have to do.
00:31:02Okay, you slay these demons.
00:31:04You destroy these monsters.
00:31:05Right now, actually, I have something set up where I can get a, I have my runes set up, which
00:31:11is another part of the progression in the game, where basically I've equipped myself for speed.
00:31:16So, you unlock these doing challenges in the game.
00:31:20Uh, this one is vacuum, so I can actually suck up some of the resources in the world without actually
00:31:24having to walk over to it.
00:31:25Okay, that's cool.
00:31:25This one is, uh, savagery, I can perform glory kills faster, and this one is blood-fueled, uh, I get
00:31:31a speed boost once I perform a glory kill.
00:31:33Yeah, that one's really fun.
00:31:35If you, if you're, if you love the speed of the game and want to even, you know, you've gotten
00:31:39used to it and you can control it really well, you, uh, yeah.
00:31:41So, yeah, he, he's my favorite in a game game.
00:31:44I've, uh, I have a running joke with my, with my stream.
00:31:46I call him the Scottish Demon whenever I get him.
00:31:49It's, uh, one of my friends who's, uh, who's British, but I'd say he's Scottish just to mess with him.
00:31:55And, uh, whenever I get the Revenant in a multiplayer, I was like, the Scottish Demon.
00:31:59And I just ran around with this, like, really, really bad accent the entire time.
00:32:03I don't know, it's just kind of fun to, like, lose yourself in the game and, and, and just have
00:32:07a good time with it.
00:32:08Yeah.
00:32:09And, and I'm actually seeing exactly what you're talking about when you mentioned how you, you built the levels for,
00:32:15uh, you know, or these particular areas for combat, right?
00:32:18I, I saw it right away, you know, because even I'm looking at it and as a gamer and someone
00:32:22who is going to play this game a lot, I looked at it and I'm like, oh man, I could
00:32:27probably go here, here.
00:32:28I could use this weapon here, you know, and, and really just have fun with it.
00:32:31Because for me, I'd probably bust out a rocket launcher and just go to town on a lot of these
00:32:35people.
00:32:36Yeah, it's actually, I mean, he can, you can show that this, this area is really, really fun.
00:32:40There's the, the heavy assault rifle.
00:32:41He's got actually the, the scoped mod on it, on it there.
00:32:44Um, this is the rocket launcher.
00:32:46This is similar to in multiplayer.
00:32:47You can, uh, uh, you, you can, uh, you can remote detonate it.
00:32:51And in an arena like this, it's really fun to use that because you can explode it in the air.
00:32:55Um, like you get, you get guys that are up on those higher perches.
00:32:58That's my baby right there.
00:32:59Yeah.
00:32:59I love the pulse rifle.
00:33:01Oh yeah.
00:33:01Yeah, this is, yeah, the plasmid's awesome.
00:33:03Yeah.
00:33:03And, uh, and it has some cool, like there he used the stun, the stun mod to, to, to stun
00:33:08that revenant and then, uh, and then take him out with a second, with a second shot.
00:33:12Oh my God.
00:33:14What is that?
00:33:14One of the, uh, people saw this at E3, but why don't you show real quick the, the weapon wheel?
00:33:19Um, because it's, it's a, it's a fundamental part of, of actually switching weapons fast.

00:33:24Um, yeah, this is, uh, this is really cool.

00:33:28That's the base, that's the base chain gun.
00:33:31But what is he fighting?

00:33:42And it's, it's, it's cool to, it's cool to enter an arena.
00:33:44I mean, it's kind of like a, a bit of a pro tip, uh, you know, you, you walk into
00:33:48an arena
00:33:49and you see, it's very doom also, you walk into an arena and you see a power up, uh, in
00:33:52the world and you're like, I wonder when I should use that.
00:33:55Like, you know, you, you see a haste or a quad damage or, or, um, you know, or something
00:33:59like that.
00:34:00And, and, and you, and you really have to kind of have this moment of, of thought of
00:34:03like, uh, um, you know, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna wait until I, I just absolutely need
00:34:08that.
00:34:09Um, and, and then even on replays, uh, you, you, you know, you kind of choose different
00:34:13times to do it.
00:34:14And, you know, the, the difficulty setting, the way the arenas are constructed, the improvisational
00:34:18nature of the combat, that all, it's, it's all, it all makes it very, um, we say this
00:34:22all the time, the game's really replayable.
00:34:24Um, it's, it's really fun to, uh, to go back to arenas and, and, and play them over
00:34:29and over.
00:34:29Especially with the different settings, right?
00:34:31Absolutely.
00:34:31And even with the different approaches you can take.
00:34:33Yeah.
00:34:33Absolutely, yeah.
00:34:34We even have, I mean, as we've prepared for demonstrations like E3 and that kind of thing,
00:34:39we have almost like competitions internally to see who can, who can make it look the best,
00:34:43who can, who can do it.
00:34:44So I think, you know, I mean, we're here at Twitch, but I think people will really dig the,
00:34:47the ability to do playthroughs and runs, um, on, on missions over and over and just show
00:34:54it in a totally different light and with different upgrades and different rune abilities.
00:34:58Well, I think what's really going to be exciting in particular for people who stream Doom on
00:35:02Twitch is, uh, you know, one thing that people love to see is failure.
00:35:09Yeah.
00:35:09Okay.
00:35:10They love failure.
00:35:11Yes.
00:35:11Okay.
00:35:11Uh, I think games like Dark Souls are a testament to that.
00:35:14People love watching that.
00:35:15They love watching people fail and, and get frustrated and do all that stuff.
00:35:19Uh, I watch a lot of those streams where they have death counters at the top of like how
00:35:23many times they've tried to do this thing.
00:35:24and I think that that is something that people are actually really going to gravitate to here.
00:35:29You know, like how, how I, uh, you know, how many times I, I fail, how many times I succeed,
00:35:33you know, uh, how I do so and, and the sick things that happen mid game.
00:35:38Cause there's always going to be these crazy moments.
00:35:40Yeah.
00:35:40So, uh, something I didn't want to touch on here is of course, um, Doom, you guys brought
00:35:45back a lot of mechanics that were very familiar to Doom, such as no reloading, uh, which I just
00:35:51want to point out first day playing the multiplayer, uh, beta and I, again, had never really touched
00:35:58Doom that much.
00:35:58I, I wasn't, you know, too familiar with it and I was playing and I'm like, what do I
00:36:04reload?
00:36:04I'm just so used to reloading.
00:36:06Yeah.
00:36:06And then I was just like, oh, you, you, you don't, you don't in Doom.
00:36:10Um, but then you guys also added, you know, things that weren't in the original Doom, such
00:36:14as, you know, jumping, right?
00:36:15Which is, uh, something that you really couldn't do in that.
00:36:17It'd be hard to not have a game nowadays without jumping.
00:36:20Without jumping.
00:36:20Yeah.
00:36:20But I think that that is, uh, that is quite interesting because a lot of, I mean, to be
00:36:25realistic, you know, these days, a lot of people are kind of releasing games with very similar
00:36:31mechanics, uh, whether that be aim down sights, whether that would be sprinting, um, you know,
00:36:37a variety of different tools, you know, we're seeing so many, we're seeing movement really
00:36:41play a role in a lot of different, uh, things out.
00:36:45What was, I guess, the challenge for you guys there?
00:36:47Because essentially you're, you're, you have to make a game that is classic Doom, right?
00:36:51Like you have to make a game that speaks to the community while also making a game that
00:36:55speaks to a new audience.
00:36:56Um, and, and do you feel like you hit that, uh, you hit that balance there?
00:37:00I, I feel like we did.
00:37:02I mean, it's, uh, it is a challenge.
00:37:03I mean, we, we, we've spent, you know, years in development on this.
00:37:07This is, this is actually, I'll answer that question, but, uh, this is actually one of
00:37:10the rune trials.
00:37:11Um, yeah, yeah.
00:37:13Um, but just to, just to show it here.
00:37:15Um, so we talked about those, um, we talked about the runes that you can earn.
00:37:18You do these through these trials, um, and they, they basically take you to a different,
00:37:22uh, kind of like a little, um, little challenge level.
00:37:25Oh, that's sick.
00:37:26So you just gotta destroy everything in a minute and 30 seconds before team.
00:37:29For this one.
00:37:30It's different every time.
00:37:30Yeah, it's different every single time.
00:37:31And, and each one gives you a different, a different rune trial.
00:37:34There's 12 of them, um, throughout the game.
00:37:36And, um, you know, that one is destroy everything within a certain amount of time.
00:37:40Um, there's ones where it's more about movement and getting through, uh, you know, through
00:37:44the world in a certain amount of time.
00:37:46Um, and, and then again, those, those unlock these, these are upgraded or mastered through,
00:37:50uh, through challenges.
00:37:51So you can see their vacuum.
00:37:52You can upgrade.
00:37:53It's actually already upgraded.
00:37:55Um, but, but some of the other ones, uh, you know, you, you, you, you, you have to kind
00:37:59of continue to, to do, to use that.
00:38:02Um, the nice thing, actually, if you go back to runes real quick, it's, it's, it's, uh, when
00:38:06you, when you, when you get your first rune, you get it, uh, you get these slots.
00:38:10And so you get your first slot.
00:38:11Um, but then, um, as you, uh,
00:38:14as you continue to play, when you, when you've found and been awarded four runes, it opens
00:38:19up a second slot.
00:38:20And then once you've done seven, it opens up a third slot.
00:38:22And these are all stacking capabilities.
00:38:24So, um, you get this really awesome ability to tune the gameplay to exactly how you want,
00:38:31just based on stacking these rooms, these rooms together in, in different combinations.
00:38:35And you can adjust these at any point during the gameplay.
00:38:37I mean, he just, he just jumps in here and does this.
00:38:40So, you know, you get into a boss fight and you may adjust, uh, your runes.
00:38:43Like, you know, you maybe don't want something that plays so much into glory kills.
00:38:48You want something that, you know, gives you, uh, you know, gives you, um, infinite ammo
00:38:53when your health, when your armor's above a certain, which is, which is another one of
00:38:56them.
00:38:56So, you can kind of fine tune your gameplay based on the situations and based on, uh,
00:39:01you know, based on how you want to play.
00:39:02We're going to jump ahead again.
00:39:03That's why the stream, stream went away.
00:39:05I showed that auto map because, uh, the runes are, like, a huge part of, like, the experience
00:39:09in Doom.
00:39:10And you could really tailor, like Marty said, the experience to however it is you like to
00:39:13play.
00:39:14Like, I, I set it up for speed.
00:39:15I'm going to play the next one and set it up more for, like, a defensive strategy where
00:39:19I can, uh, pick up armor every time I glory kill somebody.
00:39:22Um, and they're, they're not always on your main path in the world.
00:39:26They're definitely part of the secrets of Doom.
00:39:28So, it's definitely worth checking your auto map and looking for them.
00:39:31They have this very, uh, bright green glowing light in the world.
00:39:34But sometimes you can't see it.
00:39:35So, it's, it's worth digging in the corners to make sure you can get access to all the
00:39:38Rune trials that you can.
00:39:40That's cool.
00:39:40And, and I wanted to, uh, kind of touch on that question I asked you beforehand about
00:39:44balancing the new with the old a little bit.
00:39:47Um, I guess, you know, like, what were some of your challenges there?
00:39:51Yeah, yeah.
00:39:52Um, so, you know, I mean, it, it, it is that, that kind of combination of, of taking,
00:39:58something that feels very familiar, um, and, and very classic, but, but making it for today.
00:40:04You know, making it for, for 2016.
00:40:07Um, and, uh, and, uh, and I, you know, I, I think, you know, when you, when you watch
00:40:10the gameplay, certainly when you play the game, uh, you feel like you're playing a Doom game.
00:40:14Because it, it's, uh, it's, it's that, that constant, uh, that constant chess match
00:40:20that happens with the enemy.
00:40:21It's, it's the challenge of it.
00:40:23Um, and, uh, and when you get into these, these, these, these fights, um, it's, it's,
00:40:28there's, uh, there's like a, a micro, a micro loop of decisions that you're, that you're
00:40:32always making, uh, about like, okay, I, I see, you know, I see a Baron over there.
00:40:37I've got two imps in front of me.
00:40:38I've got a Hell Knight over here.
00:40:40How do I want to take this on?
00:40:42And, and, uh, and you, you, you become like, uh, I've, I've said it before, but you almost
00:40:45come to become like your own fight choreographer in a way.
00:40:48And, and it's, it's, you're always in the middle of this massive street fight, um, which
00:40:51is, uh, which is, uh, which is.
00:40:52Oh, I live my life.
00:40:54It's, it's, it's, it's actually really, uh, that aspect of the gameplay, it's, you know,
00:41:00it's, it's simple, um, Doom was, Doom was relatively simple game, and that's what made
00:41:04it really cool, um, and, uh.
00:41:07And the more, the more you explore the world, the faster you can level, level yourself up,
00:41:11because, uh, there are more mod bots in the corners, there's, there's the, the elite guards,
00:41:15that's where you get the research, uh, the, the suit points from, and, and, um, that can power up
00:41:20your character faster, so it's, it's definitely worth digging the world.
00:41:23Also, like, there's a lot of lore, you get the data files that you pick up, so, and out
00:41:27of that is what you fill up your codex with, with information, and, and when you're done,
00:41:31we, we kind of treated the codex like it was the UAC cult handbook, so it's, it's pretty
00:41:35cool, if you read it, the first entry of anything that you pick up, like, on resource operations,
00:41:40that, the map, that, the first map we played, it's a pretty straightforward, like, public-facing
00:41:44message about the, the resource operations facility, and then the second one is what we consider
00:41:49kind of like the, you've now gained access, you're, like, tier two advocate of the UAC
00:41:53program, and, uh, that's when it gets very culty and weird, and as you go through the
00:41:57game, it'll get even more so, and, and then again, it's, it's all, it's very self-aware,
00:42:01it's not taking itself too seriously, it's meant to be amusing and, and fun, um, since we're
00:42:07on story, it's, it, I don't know that, like, necessarily, we, we built up a lot of lore so
00:42:12that we, we would have, like, everything has a story behind it, and, and, uh, we're laying
00:42:16down the foundation for what we feel like is, is something that's good for the franchise,
00:42:20uh, but, again, it's, it's totally out of your way, though, like, if, if, if, it's there
00:42:24if you want it, you don't have to sit there and listen to any of the, uh, any of the
00:42:27audio
00:42:28files or, or the, uh, the echoes, yeah, I mean, I am, I'm, I'm hamming it up a little
00:42:32bit so people can see it, but, like, you know, you, you could just rip through it really
00:42:36fast if you want to.
00:42:37Was that, like, a, a key point of feedback that you took from the community and also just from
00:42:41yourself, because I know you, you actually have been involved, uh, for quite a while,
00:42:45um, at id, so.
00:42:46Yeah, I, I, yeah, I've worked at id a long time, a little over 16 years, so, uh, you
00:42:50know, kind of, id, id games are, are, uh, it's, it's, it's almost all I've, all I've made
00:42:55is, is, is id games, so, and been a part of, so, uh, so, yeah, I mean, we, we, we
00:43:00took a
00:43:00lot from that, um, we, we, we did a lot of stuff, like, like Hugo mentions, I mean, we, we
00:43:05really want to lay a foundation that, that we think is cool and, and gonna be fun to, to, to
00:43:10build
00:43:10on in the future, um, so, uh, but, but yeah, I mean, adding, adding, again, it's, it's, everything
00:43:16we do, or we've tried to do from, uh, you know, from a classic perspective of bringing it forward,
00:43:21it's always, it's always trying to make it really, really fun for somebody who, who maybe
00:43:26hasn't ever played Doom.
00:43:27We always have to keep that in mind, you know, there's, there's people out there that we
00:43:29want to, we want this to be their first Doom game, um, uh, but at the, but at the same
00:43:34time, uh, it's, it's always gotta feel, you know, it's gotta feel familiar, it's gotta feel
00:43:38like, you know, um, we're, we're kinda given, given the, the, the Doom, the Doom fan, the
00:43:43person that's, that's, that's, that's, you know, that's been a part of their lives for
00:43:4625 years, uh, we, we, there's a knowing nudge and a wink kind of always with, whether it's
00:43:51the design of a creature or, um, the, the way the levels feel or, you know, the way a secret
00:43:57works or, or anything like that, um, that, that this, it's, um, you know, it's all kind
00:44:01of, we're all, we're all part of the same team on, on that kind of side.
00:44:05Nice, nice. So, we have, yeah, we're gonna, we're gonna, yeah, we're gonna jump here
00:44:09into, um, so that last, that last mission, um, I kinda breezed past the intro of it, but
00:44:15that was Lazarus, that really takes place, you know, before you go too far here, um, that,
00:44:19that takes place part way through, and again, it's, that, that's really where you start to
00:44:22explore how, how deep the cult goes, um, and we keep calling it a cult. It is, they do
00:44:29some weird stuff. Um, uh, it's, it's, it's, it's where, it's kind of the facility that
00:44:33Olivia, who you mentioned earlier, um, is the head of, and, uh, and, and so.
00:44:38You're just breezing through these upgrades right now.

00:45:29be a game that, that people really like to, like to stream and, and, uh, and create, create videos of.

00:46:33This is Titan's Realm, so this is, uh, this is, Hell's kind of broken up into these fractures.
00:46:38Um, and this is a, kind of what we call a fracture of Hell, um, that, uh, uh, that is,
00:46:45um, actually, you actually get a little bit of lore.
00:46:47These are what we call, uh, Slayer Testaments.
00:46:49Um, these are kind of some of the, some of the way that you get, again, you just touch it,
00:46:53you can listen, you don't have to listen, whatever.
00:46:55We don't want to say what it's about.
00:46:56Yeah, we don't want to say what it's about.
00:46:57But, uh, but you, you, you start to understand even, even more lore about Hell, um, and the player, and
00:47:03that kind of stuff.
00:47:04Yeah, cause you, you've, I mean, Doom 1, Doom 2, you've gone there, you know, you went there, you did
00:47:09that.

00:47:09You know, you, you went back again, you did it again.

00:47:12Um, but it was always just like, you know, you're, you're shooting demons in Hell.

00:47:18I mean, just, it's a lot of shooting demons in Hell.
00:47:20It's kind of taking the fight to their home turf.
00:47:22Now, this is a cool moment.

00:47:25And, and this, and to me, this is, this screams Doom.
00:47:28Yeah.
00:47:29How often in a game do you get to jump down a demon's, like a corpse to the demon's throat?

00:47:35And then it pretty much just get bombarded as soon as you come out.
00:47:39Yeah.
00:47:39This, this whole level is kind of built around, uh, the, the idea that, that it's, it's this
00:47:44fracture of Hell that you're kind of continuing to go down through and actually you end up on
00:47:49the other side of it, uh, uh, kind of, it's almost like going through an iceberg of, of
00:47:53Hell, um, and, and, and ending up on the bottom.
00:47:56Um, but really weird to use ice with Hell, you know, I respect that.
00:47:59Hell freezes over.
00:48:00Um, but, uh, but this first part is kind of built in the, in the, um,
00:48:05as you saw there, you kind of went down.
00:48:06It's like a demon, a Titan demon graveyard.
00:48:10Can glory kill those guys?
00:48:11You can actually, if they're, if you're up and, and you can get close enough to them or
00:48:14they're low, you, you definitely can.

00:48:43He had, he had pulled up the, uh, the, the chain gun with a modification.
00:48:47It's, it's probably one of my favorite guns in the game with the, with the modification
00:48:51of the mobile turret, um, where you, you basically break it off into three.
00:48:56Um, you know, three, yeah, like that.
00:48:59Um, three, three guns basically kind of all firing the same.
00:49:02That's insane.
00:49:03And when we talked about the weapon wheel, uh, you know, again, like you get to carry your
00:49:07guns with you all of the time, um, and have access to them.
00:49:10And, and as you've gotten, as you get deeper into the games, revealing a little, another
00:49:14little secret here.
00:49:15But as you get deeper into the game, not only do you have those, those, those eight guns
00:49:18that are on the wheel, but each, uh, but each mod, um.
00:49:23You can't just go there and then choose not to reveal it, Hugo.
00:49:26It's just, that's not how this works.
00:49:28You can't just tease the viewer.
00:49:30You know what though?
00:49:30Like I'm worried we're revealed too many secrets.
00:49:33They've seen too much.
00:49:35They have seen too much.
00:49:36All right.
00:49:37Uh, but, but the mods you can access, um, you know, once you have like a couple mods
00:49:40for a gun, you can only have one mod on a gun at a time.
00:49:43Uh, but you can switch between them really fast.
00:49:46You, you've seen him do that a couple times here.
00:49:48Um, uh, where he, he, uh, he'll switch between two mods really fast just a quick button
00:49:53press.
00:49:54Um, so between the weapon wheel and having immediate access to all those guns and each gun having a mod,
00:50:00and then kind of a fast switch to the other mod, you, you, you end up with like 20 different
00:50:05combinations of guns that you can use at any time.
00:50:07This is, this is, that's a great strategy right there.
00:50:09That's, there's like pro tip, you know, number one.
00:50:12Pro tip with Hugo, number one.
00:50:14Exactly.
00:50:14Like shoot, shoot a, shoot a pinky with the stun, um, kind of stun him a little bit and then
00:50:18swing
00:50:19around him and shoot him in the butt with the, uh, super shotgun.
00:50:21It's fantastic.
00:50:22Um, while, while you're on this screen, not only the, the, the auto map there you can see,
00:50:27but, uh, you know, we talked about, um, we've talked about the, uh, the upgrades.
00:50:32Uh, you get those through a number of different means.
00:50:35Leave that up for a second.
00:50:36Um, so on the right hand side there, you can see, leave, leave the challenges up.
00:50:40You can see those challenges.
00:50:42Um, so those are mission challenges.
00:50:44Again, these are totally optional.
00:50:45If you wanna, if you wanna get one, you know, one upgrade point per challenge, uh, you can do those.
00:50:50It keeps, keeps track of that and, and informs you.
00:50:52Then there's exploration challenges.
00:50:54Um, so in this level, you can see there's six secrets, um, that, that you can, you can find.
00:51:00Um, and if you find half of them, you get one upgrade.
00:51:02If you find another, if you find all of them.
00:51:04Yeah, you, you get the weapon upgrade point.
00:51:06Yeah, those are all, those are all weapon upgrade points.
00:51:09Um, and then you get upgrade points.
00:51:11You can see up in the top right corner, you get, uh, upgrade points for just regular combat.
00:51:15So lots of different ways to earn, earn upgrades.
00:51:19Um, and then, uh, you know, and then the mods actually have, uh, separate challenges to master them.
00:51:24Um, which makes them even more powerful.
00:51:26Almost a, a level of power that is, that is just, it's overwhelming.
00:51:30They, they, they really, really become, uh, super, super powerful, uh, and, and when you,
00:51:35when you focus on a gun and, and make it a, a big part of the way you play.
00:51:40Nice.
00:51:40So now you're, I mean, you're basically just in full fledged demon monster slayer mode.
00:51:45Yeah.
00:51:45And, and once you, once you memorize everything on the weapon wheel, you can kind of quick switch between it.
00:51:50I've been doing a lot of that and, uh, make sure that you get the right sort of tool for
00:51:54the job.
00:51:55It's actually, it, it, it kind of comes from the way, uh, uh, and, and the weapon wheel works great
00:52:00on the PC,
00:52:01but, um, it, that, that desire comes from playing on the PC.
00:52:04You know, when you, when you have, when you play a game with all the, with all the guns, where
00:52:08you're carrying all the guns,
00:52:09it's, it's, it's way more important to be able to just reach up and hit the number key, um, that,
00:52:14that you want.
00:52:14So we kind of wanted to design, uh, for the consoles design that, uh, that capability where you can get
00:52:20to any weapon really quick without having to cycle through all of them.
00:52:22Um, and, uh, and, uh, the weapon wheel kind of puts the game into a slow motion, uh, state for,
00:52:27for a little bit.
00:52:28And, and, and on the PC it's, uh, similar?
00:52:31Yeah, absolutely. You just pull the weapon wheel up or you can scroll through guns using the, uh, you know,
00:52:36using the, the mouse wheel.
00:52:37Uh, or you can pull up the weapon wheel, scroll to a gun or, or move your mouse to it.
00:52:41So it's a, it's kind of a universal system that, that, that I think just works, works great when you're
00:52:46trying to manage kind of that full, full load of, full load of guns.
00:52:50Oh boy. Again, you can see like, oh, oh, one of my favorite moments.
00:52:55Oh man. You gotta, you gotta like prep that up. You can't just do it. You know, you have to
00:53:00like get us prepared for it.
00:53:02Chainsaw Revenant. Chainsaw Revenant. Oh, absolutely.
00:53:05Ah, crushing my dreams. We'll have to, we'll have to find some gas.
00:53:09Crushing my dreams. You'll find gas in hell. Of course. Uh, it goes without saying. Oh man. Oh no. That
00:53:16is so cool.
00:53:18Yeah, you, you end up, when you get into missions like this where there's just an overwhelming number of, of,
00:53:23of demons, um, you, you end up using glory kills somewhat strategically.
00:53:27And, and they actually play into, uh, the harder difficulties a little bit because when you, when you go into
00:53:33them, when you actually activate it, you have a moment, just a very brief moment of invulnerability.
00:53:40Um, so, uh, so when you're playing on something like Nightmare or Ultra Nightmare, uh, you almost look for those
00:53:46moments where I can go in and glory kill a guy if I'm just, I'm, I'm hanging on the edge,
00:53:51uh, of death.
00:53:52And, uh, cause you know, when you, when you actually, when you glory kill, uh, it, it drops a greater
00:53:57amount of, uh, of, of health and, and, and, uh, ammunition.
00:54:02Yeah. Um, so there's a, there's a benefit to doing it too. And, and again, when you, when you're playing
00:54:06on a higher difficulty, it's, it's, it's particularly, uh, particularly useful.
00:54:10Yeah. You see, he's, he's, uh, you know, Hugo's been using, uh, grenades, um, so we haven't really talked about
00:54:16equipment.
00:54:17Um, you find, throughout the game, you find a few different pieces of equipment, um, what, what you've seen there,
00:54:23riding the edge of, uh, death there.
00:54:26Hugo lives life on the edge. Okay. This is what I've discovered with him so far. Throwing grenades on the
00:54:31floor, not prepping up, chainsaw kills.
00:54:34Just a lot of craziness with this guy. Go for it. Oh my goodness. That's a great glory kill. That's
00:54:41a good one.
00:54:42All right. I missed him. Yeah. Each, each demon, you know, when you fight it, you can kind of see
00:54:47him here lining up and pinky charges and swing around.
00:54:51It's like being a bullfighter. You just smacked him with his back. With his tail. With the tail on his
00:54:57back. That is just, that's disrespectful, but I, I'll take it.
00:55:02That's cool stuff. That's really cool stuff. And I see the haste there too, just hanging out.
00:55:06Yeah. You know, you, you pick and choose when you want to use it. All right. So this way, you
00:55:10know, like, Hey, this is going to be a good opportunity for me to take advantage of this.
00:55:14And yeah, or, or, Oh, and just jump right through a portal here. So yeah. Again, another, another kind of
00:55:21classic thing, you know, it's like, uh, we use teleporters throughout the game and portals that, that allow you to
00:55:26kind of zip, zip from one space to another.
00:55:28Um, we've incorporated, uh, you know, movement from the Lazarus mission, but he, um, he has a double jump, uh,
00:55:35capability at this point.
00:55:36Um, so you start out with just a basic jump and then, uh, a few levels in, uh, you discover,
00:55:41uh, uh, these, these kind of double jump boost boots.
00:55:45Um, and, uh, and then double jump becomes a big part of your, of your movement package.
00:55:50And, uh, and it's just like, so he'll, he'll use it, you know, he uses it a lot throughout here.
00:55:55Is that quad damage?
00:55:56Yep.
00:55:57Yes, it is. And it's perfect. It's a perfect example. You, you, you may want to wait for that.
00:56:01Really?
00:56:02Yeah. Cause most of the fights escalate. So you kind of, you get in and if you can kind of
00:56:06handle things, uh, okay.
00:56:08A lot of times you want to, you want to hold off a little bit until you, uh, until you
00:56:14know that the fight's gotten a little out of control.
00:56:16Oh, that's just wrong. That is just disrespectful.
00:56:20Pinky, Pinky gets no love here. Oh geez Louise. That's insane. That's cool though. That's really cool.
00:56:26That's a great example of, you know, a guy, a guy gets staggered, um, and, uh, and then, um, you
00:56:32know, and then he, he uses like a, a fast kill gun to, to take him out.
00:56:35You don't have to, you don't have to glory kill every single time. Um, it's just kind of just a
00:56:39part of the strategy as you play.
00:56:41Yeah. And, and I could go through the whole game probably just not glory killing.
00:56:45You could if you want to. Yeah. Yeah. You know, it's, uh, once you, uh, once you,
00:56:49once you start, once you start playing, it's, uh, it's, it's one thing to watch and then, um, and then
00:56:54playing is just, uh, again, it's, it's, it's like dancing.
00:56:58You know, you kind of, you kind of get out there and you're like, it just, it just feels good
00:57:01to be, to be moving through these spaces.
00:57:03And, and, um, you get into, you get into a flow. It's, it's, it is that, that similarity to, uh,
00:57:09you know, without the reload, the fast movement,
00:57:12you're, you're dodging projectiles, all these, all these ideas that, that, uh, early in the game, we try to, we
00:57:17try to introduce kind of slowly.
00:57:19Um, uh, you, uh, you know, cause, cause they're not, they're not, they're not common when you play most shooters
00:57:26today.
00:57:26Uh, like, you know, you, you, you, you try to hide or you try to let your health regenerate or
00:57:31that kind of stuff.
00:57:32Uh, in this, you, you, you, you blast through, you keep moving. Um, dodging projectiles even is just something that,
00:57:38uh, that I think, um, you know, we, we, we start players off fighting, fighting imps early cause they throw
00:57:44the fireballs.
00:57:45And to, to, to get that feeling of swerving between fireballs, uh, swerving between projectiles, most enemies, their, their main
00:57:52attacks are either to pressure you or to shoot, um, you know, to shoot a projectile.
00:57:57There's another good example. Uh, just kind of dodging and weaving through that stuff. Oh my gosh. There we go.
00:58:03Yes. Brought out the big gun. Use it. I almost died. Yeah. You were close, man. It was close. I'm
00:58:09telling you, you're living your life. Holy shit. Oh no.
00:58:14Oh my goodness. That is so no quad damage. You're not committing. You're not committing. I think he's about to
00:58:21think you should commit.
00:58:22I think he's going to use the BFG on him. Yeah. Oh my goodness. Look at the way he just
00:58:26crumpled like a cookie. Jeez. Go for it. Oh, no way.
00:58:32That is just the worst way to go. Right there. So, but that's, that's a, uh, that's a good example
00:58:37right there.
00:58:37Like you fight a Baron and, uh, and you know, that was a, that was a one hit kill of
00:58:42the Baron, which is, which is pretty with, with the chainsaw, which is like, that's, that's pretty valuable to be
00:58:47able to do that.
00:58:48Um, but, uh, you know, but it cost all of his fuel. He had to be completely full on fuel
00:58:54and it cost all of it. Um, so now he doesn't, he picked up that ammo, but he doesn't have
00:59:00the capability to use that to kind of continue to get more ammo from lesser enemies.
00:59:03Yeah, because obviously the point is you guys didn't want people just running through the game and just sawing the
00:59:08crap out of everything that they said.
00:59:09Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. You want to like part of the, part of the, the fun of doom is, you know,
00:59:15again, the weapons and figuring out what works when and, and, and how to do it. And while the chainsaw
00:59:21is great, you don't want people to just, I do respect it.
00:59:25Okay. So you guys make it like those guys easy. It's a lot. So this looks like it's about to
00:59:30get real, really quick. Yeah. Like, I don't know, because this is a pretty wide open arena here.
00:59:37Um, yeah. So I'm a little, I'm afraid for you, Hugo.
00:59:41He should, he should ramp up the difficulty in that. Yeah. You know, I was, we had a big talk
00:59:45at the office as to whether, like what difficulty I should play that. Cause I mean, I've played the game
00:59:49a million times, so I'm definitely playing it on a slightly easier, definitely an easier setting for me.
00:59:55Yeah. Okay. Okay. So, so what you're saying is, you know, these demons, you know, they, they can't hold a
01:00:00candle to, you know, don't go Hugo over here.
01:00:03Um, but actually the, I'm sorry to cut you with the, the inflight mobility thing is, is, uh, I have
01:00:08it on right now. So it allows me to like basically move in midair.
01:00:12Yeah. It's, it's, it's a, it's a perfect example of, of like, you know, the, the, everything we do, we
01:00:17try to make from an upgrade perspective. These aren't like micro upgrades.
01:00:20They're not, they're not just little, little like, oh, I can, you know, get 5% more damage or something
01:00:27like that. They're, they're really, they're, they're pretty meaningful and they, they really do fundamentally change the way, uh, the
01:00:33game feels or the weapon feels.
01:00:34Um, so his inflight mobility room that he's using there, if you really like to play and have massive air
01:00:40control, um, it, you can see there, like he, he, you know, he jumps and he can almost jump out
01:00:46over a ledge and then pull himself back.
01:00:48This is, this is, these, these are really cool. I love these things. This is, um, as, as part of
01:00:53our secret system, we have collectibles, these little, uh, these little doom guy, uh, collectibles that when you find it,
01:00:59it unlocks, um, in our model viewer, uh, you can access, you can, uh, you can access, uh, uh, our
01:01:07model viewer and be able to see any of the demons, uh, the guns, um, really up close and, and,
01:01:14and see the detail and level that's in them.
01:01:16Um, um, and, and you, you unlock those through the, um, through finding those collectibles in the world.
01:01:22All right. So it seems like you're about to, to get, and so what is this yellow skull here?
01:01:27It's a, it's a, it's a key. Um, you, you find the yellow skull and unlock the, unlock the door.
