00:00:16really excited to jump in. Let's do some quick introductions. To my right is Tom Mustaine, the chief architect of
00:00:22everything that's awesome about Snap Map. Tom, say hi.
00:00:25How are you doing? Hello, Twitch. And then to Tom's right is Sarah Wellick, who just flew in from London
00:00:30last night simply to help host the stream. She's that excited about Snap Map. As am I. I'm Gary Steinman.
00:00:36I'm with Bethesda Softworks. Tom, we want to jump right in.
00:00:40Absolutely. So what we're going to do right now is show you Snap Map for the first time. We're just
00:00:45going to jump into a multiplayer match. It's a four-player classic Doom-style deathmatch where we're playing with sped
00:00:51-up characters, which is all something you can set up inside of...
00:00:55Snap automatically. You can customize it. So this is super fast. You've spawned with a double-barrel shotgun. We all
00:01:01know what people want, and you can set this up to do it all by yourself. Like, this is something
00:01:06one of our QA folks built for.
00:01:07Oh, cool. What you're saying is this is going to be carnage.
00:01:10Absolutely. Absolutely. This is, like, I think a 15 frag limit. So this area is set up where the guys
00:01:16spawn right behind me there.
00:01:16That's pretty fast. That's pretty fast.
00:01:18That's pretty fast. I've got a double-barrel here. This is set up where, basically, just like classic Doom...
00:01:25So it's kind of like, yeah, like the maps of all. You've got the weapons spawning in there.
00:01:29Yep. You've got this crazy speed.

00:01:32Yep, and I'm dead.
00:01:33So this looks pretty familiar, I would imagine, to folks that have played original classic Doom.
00:01:37And you can set this kind of stuff up. I've got my crazy guns. Oh, got blasted.
00:01:41Doing super well so far.
00:01:42Yeah, I'm doing great. It's fun playing on Twitch stream. So I'm going to pop over here. And you can
00:01:48see here we've got, you know,
00:01:49this space kind of feels like some of the classic levels. If you're playing Doom nowadays, classic Doom nowadays,
00:01:54you've got levels that kind of feel, they're built for little areas around the side, which are all things that
00:01:59we add inside Snap.
00:02:00And they've got weapon spawns that you're running around picking up. I've got this here.
00:02:04And this was built by somebody on the Snapback team or one of the QA guys?
00:02:08Yeah, this was built by one of the QA guys. It was whipped up together really quickly and just killed
00:02:11me with that.
00:02:11And they just wanted to make something that looks and felt like classic Doom.
00:02:14And it's super easy to build. So I'm going to go over here and pop this guy.

00:02:22I mean, you say it's super easy to build. We're going to look into some of the building later, but
00:02:25I shouldn't distract you now.

00:02:35So we've set it up with a little bit of modification from the new Doom, which is you've got this
00:02:39demon rune concept.

00:02:42You're definitely going to get that demon.

00:02:46All right. So now I'm a demon for 60 seconds, which is great.

00:02:57That's the way we bring people together in Snap Map is that you can play co-op together, but then
00:03:01you can also kill your friend.
00:03:02Absolutely.
00:03:03Which is always like work.
00:03:04Plus plus.

00:03:06So I'm at eight.
00:03:08Oh, almost got me.
00:03:12So as you can see, it's definitely fast, and this is all modifiable by any user.
00:03:17You can take this map, you can branch it, make it however you want.
00:03:19If you don't like power-ups, you can remove the power-ups.
00:03:22If you don't like where the weapons are, you can change that.
00:03:24Oh, somebody's about to snipe.
00:03:25We're going to get to that later, Tom, but you mentioned branching, so let's put that aside for later.
00:03:29No problem.
00:03:29But that's a really cool thing that you could do, where you could take somebody's map and modify it a
00:03:34bit.
00:03:35Yeah, make changes that's very much similar to the original, didn't it?
00:03:39Where you can make a cool map, and if you like it, you can make changes to it, and edit.
00:03:45Edit, send it to your friends, play with your friends.
00:03:47I only got a couple more to go here.

00:03:51I mean, everything you see here, even the HUD elements are customizable.
00:03:54So we're seeing in the chat show a lot of people are-

00:04:02So you can, like, the weapons you put in, you can have the classic weapons, but also some of the
00:04:06kind of beasts, like the Gauss.

00:04:17I'm kind of distracted by Heidi's armor, which is awesome.

00:04:49But that's something cool you could do as well in SnapMap.
00:04:52You could create a map that's really cool, but you could also put in a secret or two.
00:04:56Absolutely.
00:04:57You could destroy your friends without them going wild.
00:04:59Or let them know, you know, like, there's a secret in this map.
00:05:01You can find it, try and hint for other folks.
00:05:05I mean, I'm looking at ways to give myself an advantage, but yes, you can find ways to
00:05:09make it really exciting for other players.
00:05:11Yeah, absolutely.
00:05:11So honest and humble.
00:05:13That's what I've heard on.
00:05:15So, yeah, this is a custom SnapMap.
00:05:17It's created from scratch.
00:05:19Someone started it.
00:05:20Ugh!
00:05:20And I lost.
00:05:21That's a good way to start the stream.
00:05:23I think you did it honorably.
00:05:25You did better than some people.
00:05:27You know, they could-
00:05:28It's, you know, how it is.
00:05:29So, here you see on each, at the end of every level, you get a scoreboard.
00:05:33Sure.
00:05:33And here you can see some SnapPoints down at the bottom, which we'll talk about a little
00:05:36bit later.
00:05:36SnapPoints are earned every time you play.
00:05:39Right.
00:05:39Like some points.
00:05:39Leaderboard.
00:05:40This is, every map has its own leaderboard.
00:05:42We'll talk about that a little bit more.
00:05:43There's daily challenges that are played as you play through the game.
00:05:47You earn challenges and can earn SnapPoints through that as well.
00:05:49And then there's a scoreboard again, so I can do accident.
00:05:51And we'll talk more about building later, but I think somebody in the stream asked, is
00:05:55this map custom-made?
00:05:56And it is custom-made, right?
00:05:57Absolutely.
00:05:57Fully custom-made map.
00:05:58And the beauty of this is that you, anybody can grab these maps.
00:06:01You can just play them, like, the day that the game is out.
00:06:04You can play these maps in a loop, or make changes to them, or play them with your friends.
00:06:08It's all set up and ready to go.
00:06:10That's cool.
00:06:11Okay, so at launch, you're going to have a lot of, like, pre-built maps by you guys,
00:06:14that if I want to get inspired and just get stuck in.
00:06:17Right, and you have content from day one.
00:06:19I mean, you want people building from day one, but there's going to be a lot of people
00:06:21who just want to play some cool stuff.
00:06:23Correct.
00:06:23I also want to learn.
00:06:25Yeah, and there's a ton to learn from.
00:06:27So, yeah, we're going to talk a bit about single-player SnapMaps and co-op SnapMaps.
00:06:31For now, I'm actually going to boot some dudes out.
00:06:33Guys who did really badly, yeah.
00:06:35Yeah, they beat me a lot.
00:06:36Just get out, get out, get out.
00:06:38I'm going to switch to another map, and we're actually going to play a new map here.
00:06:42This is a modified map, so let's see here.
00:06:44Look at all these maps.
00:06:46So, talking about custom maps, so one of the things that's really powerful about SnapMaps
00:06:49is that you can create pretty much anything you want.
00:06:52Like, we just created and played a super-fast deathmatch mode.
00:06:55Right.
00:06:55And that's something you can do very, very easily.
00:06:58You can set it up where each player does different things.
00:07:00This is actually a fully custom co-op mode that was created by...
00:07:04Co-op, that's a big thing.
00:07:05Yes.
00:07:06Okay.
00:07:06We talked about this.
00:07:07So, being set up where you can have four players, you can get in easily and play a co-op
00:07:11game.
00:07:12And any combination of four players, right?
00:07:14You could have two versus two.
00:07:15You could have all four working together for one objective.
00:07:19Correct.
00:07:19You can set up whatever you want.
00:07:21You can also have players be a demon as well.
00:07:24Whoa.
00:07:24So, one of the team members, any number of team members could be playing as demons.
00:07:27Like it works.
00:07:27Yeah, totally.
00:07:27See, and that works well for you with wanting to have the advantage.
00:07:30That's right.
00:07:31Or just go straight in as a demon and feel...
00:07:32Any leg up I could get.
00:07:34Yep.
00:07:37So we're busy doing the load.
00:07:40But yeah, the real trick here is that SatMaps lets you do pretty much anything you want.
00:07:45And you can basically build co-op.
00:07:48You can build single player.
00:07:49You can build multiplayer.
00:07:50Can you adjust, I see someone's asking, can you adjust the damage that different weapons
00:07:55have or adjust the other parameters like that?
00:08:00Yeah, absolutely.
00:08:01You can basically modify it where you can make changes to anything you want.
00:08:05You can adjust how much weapon damage is due.
00:08:07You can adjust how much health enemies have.
00:08:09And it looks like you may have lost the other player here.
00:08:11So you might have to bounce out real fast.
00:08:13Okay.
00:08:14Let me re-grab him.
00:08:14He might have got disconnected.
00:08:16You want to go ahead and keep talking.
00:08:18This is the magic of live television.
00:08:20That's right, right.
00:08:22We just want you to see more of Tom's face.
00:08:25That's right.

00:08:30So yeah, as we were talking about, on day one, you're going to have a whole boatload
00:08:34And they're awesome.
00:08:35Of SnapMaps that are made by the team, the SnapMap team, the Doom team, some of the QA
00:08:41people have built maps.
00:08:43All kinds of creative things.
00:08:45Tom's going to show us a bunch of those later.
00:08:48But on day one, you're going to be able to jump right in, play a whole bunch of things.
00:08:52And as you said, you could be inspired by a lot of this stuff.
00:08:55And you can jump in.
00:08:57You can look at what people are doing.
00:08:58Play through them and think, oh, I might want to tweak this and tweak that.
00:09:01And later on, we'll show you how you can actually go in and branch from those.
00:09:05But I think what's really cool with SnapMap on day one is that you instantly get to see what's been
00:09:09inspiring the developers.
00:09:10What other thoughts have they had that they want to, this is a bit too mad, we're going to put
00:09:13this in SnapMap.
00:09:14This is, I don't know, I heard rumors of a basketball game in Doom.
00:09:20Does that fit in the Doom single player?
00:09:22Maybe not.
00:09:22Maybe I put it in SnapMap.
00:09:24Give me a second to re-invite him back in.
00:09:28You want to keep that up?
00:09:29Let me find him real fast.
00:09:31But as you were saying too, about being inspired and branching maps, again, we'll show this.
00:09:36But you could take somebody's map that's out there, you could pull back the curtain, you could look at the
00:09:41different strings of logic.
00:09:43You could understand how it's built.
00:09:45You could modify it.
00:09:46Yeah, and if you don't want to play with, if maybe, like you, you have no friends, and you don't
00:09:53want to play with two people or three people, you can make a single player map that you can set
00:09:58up a leaderboard for.
00:09:59So it's like, you just set a challenge for players, and they can jump in, try and beat your score,
00:10:04try and beat others.
00:10:04Leaderboards are really cool, and I know you're going to show us that later.
00:10:07Yeah, that's a really big part about this, and we're just waiting for the player to get back in.
00:10:10So we've got a little network shenanigans going on with the screen, so you know how it goes.
00:10:14But for a popular snap map, that means there's a lot of reasons to keep coming back and seeing how
00:10:20you're doing, seeing how others are doing.
00:10:21Look at how iPhone's defeated your score.
00:10:23There could be a lot of competition there.
00:10:23I made this map and you've beaten my score.
00:10:25Yeah, that's the biggest, every time you make a new snap map, every time you publish it, it has a
00:10:30leaderboard with it.
00:10:31So you can compete with each other, you can compete against your friends.
00:10:34It's set up where everything that is built can be custom set up that way, and you can determine how
00:10:40things are scored in the leaderboard.
00:10:41I saw a question in the stream, and I know we want to get to this later, but you're not
00:10:46stealing somebody's map when you customize it.
00:10:48I think you built it in so that the original creator, his name or her name is always there.
00:10:54Correct.
00:10:54So there's always an indication of the build history, and the original creator will always be credited.
00:11:00Correct.
00:11:01Yeah.
00:11:01Every single time you make a new snap map.
00:11:03So if you start from absolute zero, you make a new map, and you basically get it in where you're
00:11:07the original creator.
00:11:09It's very similar to the original Doom Days when people made maps, and I'll talk about this in a second.
00:11:12The creator, we're actually in a safe area here so I can talk for a second.
00:11:15Oh, he's done.
00:11:16No, he's done.
00:11:17He's done.
00:11:18So what we're looking at here is a custom mode made from zero where basically we have to go pick
00:11:23up some power cores, and we're running out of time.
00:11:26So power cores are spawned by these monsters, and these monsters have been modified where they take less damage to
00:11:32do, they're easier to kill.
00:11:33Oh, so you can change the health threshold, let's speak.
00:11:36Absolutely.
00:11:37Yeah, so you can modify that.
00:11:38So this one's kind of a classic feel where you're running through a map and you're killing monsters real quickly,
00:11:42and you basically are trying to collect these power cores that are worth time.
00:11:45Right.
00:11:45So we're both running together, and now we're going to go in here, and this is a map that was
00:11:49made by, I think it was another QA individual who put this map together.
00:11:52So now I've returned all those power cores, and I've lost my teammate, but that's fine, I'll just keep going.
00:11:56Don't need him.
00:11:57Don't want to run out of time.
00:11:57He'll come and find me.
00:11:59So, running through here, trying to find more monsters to kill.
00:12:03And what you can see as well is your gun has this awesome customisation, very snazzy and subtle customisation I
00:12:07might add,
00:12:07which you would have bought using snap map points.
00:12:09Correct.
00:12:10So as you earn snap points, you can spend them basically on any customisations for your character.
00:12:16You can spend them on tiles, which I'll talk about a little bit later when you publish your maps.
00:12:21Ah, you couldn't buy it.
00:12:22Ah, I almost probably killed him.
00:12:23So, we're already 26 seconds left, so we'll see how he's doing on the other side of the map.
00:12:27But we're both trying to simultaneously work on keeping this map going, where we're going to keep the map alive
00:12:33as long as possible,
00:12:34and then the leaderboard is driven by how well you do.
00:12:37So, he's probably stuck back in one of the arenas, or maybe he died.
00:12:41So, it's a unique co-op experience, basically built from zero.
00:12:45So, there he is.
00:12:45There, he found it.
00:12:47So, if you made this map and you wanted to make it so you had more speed when you were
00:12:51running around,
00:12:52would you be able to do that?
00:12:53Would you be able to change the player speed?
00:12:54Absolutely.
00:12:55Yeah, we can modify that pretty easily, where you can set it up to speed up the player,
00:13:00you can slow down the player, we've got a map proportional a little bit later.
00:13:03But you can go super slow and stuff.
00:13:05Have you built anything cool that involves slow, slow, slow?
00:13:08Speaking of super slow, I've got one second left.
00:13:10You can go get there, get there, get there!
00:13:12Oh no!

00:13:18So, that was a fully custom mode map that was built by, and then at the end of this,
00:13:23just like with any other kind of popular user generated content, you can basically go over here and vote it
00:13:27up or vote it down or report.
00:13:28You can vote it up, I think vote it up.
00:13:29So, I'm going to vote it up.
00:13:29That's a pretty good map, so now I've voted.
00:13:31And maps get rated and sorted based on popularity.
00:13:34Right.
00:13:34So, now this is a map that I just put a leaderboard score in for two-player.
00:13:38This is a two-player leaderboard.
00:13:40And so, there we go.
00:13:41And I've got some snap points, as you talked about.
00:13:43I buy some good.
00:13:44You get snap points for everything and anything you do.
00:13:47Anything and everything you do.
00:13:48So, if you're a builder, and you only want to build, you'll get snap points.
00:13:51If you're a consumer, a content consumer, and only want to play what's out there, you get snap points, right?
00:13:57Yep.
00:13:57You get snap points for playing maps.
00:13:59You get snap points for creating and sharing content.
00:14:01You get snap points for completing challenges.
00:14:04So, it's all set up in a way that everything you do when you're playing the game earns you snap
00:14:09points.
00:14:10And then, from there, you can basically spin that on your character.
00:14:14Or, see the tile down here in the corner?
00:14:16If I go to map info, you see that tile that's actually custom to each map.
00:14:20You can spin it to earn elements for those tiles.
00:14:22So, it's real easy to earn, real easy to set up and play.
00:14:26So, now I'm going to play a totally different co-op experience.
00:14:29So, we just played one that was Time Out, which was something that somebody built from scratch.
00:14:33This one showed up from a totally different studio from inside Bethesda.
00:14:37That one of the developers got a hold of this and built a, what he calls, Basket Boom.
00:14:42Oh, cool.
00:14:42All right.
00:14:42I knew it was real.
00:14:43Yeah, it is real.
00:14:44It's totally real.
00:14:46So, if someone asked in the stream if we have to start with a gun or a loadout and snap,
00:14:49and the answer is no, you don't have to start with loadouts.
00:14:51You can start in any way you want.
00:14:53You can start the user with no gun.
00:14:55You can start the user with multiple guns.
00:14:57You can set it up where you have to pick it up throughout the world.
00:14:59It's all completely inside control.
00:15:02I mean, when I think of Doom, I think, what if I could take Doom and make it basketball?
00:15:08Make it basketball.
00:15:09Simple instructions.
00:15:10So, you added to me the instructions in here.
00:15:11The guy who made them out, I think his name is PJ.
00:15:13He actually calls this the PJ Arena.
00:15:15And I'm going to run around before Heidi starts attacking me.

00:16:07Basically, it's a big open arena that has been modified.

00:17:40So this one waits until the end of the match, basically.
00:17:43It'll compare the winners and then show a cool screen.
00:17:45But completely custom.
00:17:46I mean, we can talk about all this a little bit more in a little bit,
00:17:49but everything from the logic to show the scoreboard and show the intro text.

00:18:02so I'm just going to let him keep hitting on me.

00:18:10Which is really cool.
00:18:11So the gameplay, you can get player input, you can modify what's on the HUD.

00:19:47So it's just console or system-neutral agnostic leaderboards.

00:20:29So I can just pop these guys.
00:20:31So the cool part about this, and I'll show this off a little bit later, is a lot of these
00:20:34zombies are algorithmically populated, automatically.

00:20:38So basically, it's set up in a way where the author can just snap modules together and
00:20:43drop in a special tool that lets it just automatically place monsters.

00:20:47And the modules are these rooms.

00:20:48The AI Conductor.
00:20:49It's good stuff.
00:20:50I love that.
00:20:50Yeah, it's good stuff.

00:20:52So this map's, you know, being single-player is a cool secret.

00:22:58Can you adjust the amount of ammo and armor that comes out of enemies?
00:23:02You can set it up where either nothing comes out of them, and you can also turn off the scoring

00:23:11So if you don't want any armor, you don't want any pop-outs to come out of these guys,

00:29:01So if you put something down, anything that we have in the game, it has properties and

00:32:23And that's what the Conductor did.

00:32:25And what you saw was there were no other monsters in this level except for the big Mycubus at

00:32:31So these are all being auto-populated by the Conductor, which means you can set it up where
00:32:35low-level monsters, higher-level monsters, mid-level monsters all spawn in and do tons of
00:32:40damage to you, or they do wave battles and big events.
00:32:43So you can set it up so like room one is this tier box.
00:32:47And then this one and the next room, so each room, each module.
00:32:50Oh, we're here, we're here, we're ready, we're ready.
00:32:53You just built this and now we're playing.
00:32:55We're in here, the room's gotten cold as I step into it, so let's feel this.
00:32:57It feels cold.
00:32:58It isn't cold as hell anymore.

00:34:01tied that string to four different barrels.
00:34:03It was like bang, bang, bang.
00:34:04Yeah.
00:34:05So each one in the chain reaction triggered a different barrier to come down.

00:34:09And you can definitely, it's real easy to just place stuff and have fun.
00:34:13You can put barrels down, put demons down, and just have fun by doing that alone.
00:34:16Like put down a module, place a bunch of cool looking stuff, make a little bit of logic and make
00:34:21it fun to connect in and have things happen.
00:34:24Or, you know, it gets a little bit more complex.
00:34:27Yeah, you can see them.
00:34:27This room here has a big trigger that spawns this demon in, and, you know, from there when he dies,
00:34:33it actually ends the sequence.
00:34:34So pretty straightforward.
00:34:35So let's say everything's great, I set this map up, now I want to actually publish the map.

00:34:39Okay, so I'm saying I'm proud of this map.

00:34:44So this, for those who are familiar with the old doomwadoth.txt, it's kind of got a special place in
00:34:49my heart.
00:34:50This is kind of the old way you define how your map is set up.
00:34:53These are high-level tags that when you're publishing a map, you say, it's a single-player map.
00:34:58I'm going to set it up where it's cooperative.
00:35:00It's got competitive stuff going on there because it's got a leaderboard.
00:35:03And if you had teams or demon players involved or deathmatch, you can set that up to.
00:35:06And that's what you referred to before, where you could have it so people spawn into the map as a
00:35:09demon.
00:35:09It could start as a Revenant rather than starting as a Marine.
00:35:12Yeah, I want to start and be a demon player against regular players or all demon players.
00:35:17There's maps like that as well.

00:35:19Yeah, you can do that.

00:42:40You just branch this map, modify the logic, make changes to it.

00:42:46So essentially what they've done here is they've used the furnishings
00:42:51that you can use.
00:42:56And then they've set an endpoint using the logic, which is the timer starts here,

00:43:04So the cool part here is that your score is just diminishing the fast as you go along.
00:43:07So the worse you get, the lower the score.
00:43:09The higher the leaderboard score, the more it's going to be based on,

00:44:39the conductor is picking which guys to spawn and spawning them automatically.
00:44:43So it's spawning guys, wave after wave, and then up across the top you see it's throwing a score multiplier
00:44:49at me.
00:44:49So this is an extra element that's been added to this map by the author.
00:44:52Where to get the highest leaderboard score, and I'm doing a whole lot of planning here,
00:44:56I've got to get and collect these little donuts.

00:45:01So now every monster I kill...

00:45:26And again, this is not just fun to play or fun to build, but you have leaderboards,
00:45:31so there's a nice sense of competition around popular maps or even unpopular ones.

00:45:41And you get stat points for everything you do.
00:45:42We've seen a lot of competition around this one because the higher your multiplier gets.

00:46:28You can basically go in there and modify the conductor to change what kind of monsters spawn,
00:46:32change how they spawn, change what they show, when they're spawned.
00:46:35And it's very, very flexible.
00:46:37And the intent there is to make it where you can basically create a map very quickly
00:46:41and easily and get in and populate it.
00:46:44And you may not like how the conductor did something, so you can go in and change it.
00:46:46If you don't like that, change it again, change it again.

00:46:48And if you're really particular, you're like, ah, I just want to be very specific.
00:46:52I want to be meticulous about my placement.

00:46:58So challenges are earned, as you play challenges, challenges can be earned through publishing maps
00:47:03or just playing the game, like I mentioned before.

01:02:30is similar to original doom where you're just trying to get to the exit i want to create a king
01:02:34of the hill map or a survival map team deathmatch or i just want to start in a tiny little
01:02:38space
01:02:39okay so there's a whole lot of we've created a mountain of templates that let players uh kind
01:02:43of they can jump straight in yeah so if i wanted to create a capture the flag map i just
01:02:48go in here
01:02:48and boom it's a really basic setup and yeah so you think you want to play your friends create your
01:02:53own little co-op specifics i want to play with you two and i know that gary doesn't like enemies
01:02:58to be
01:02:58we can create our own capture the flag map with enemies with that lower health threshold so that
01:03:03we can have a truly unique experience for us that we can also share with other people exactly that's
01:03:08exactly what we set up so it's extremely powerful so i'm going to go in here and move this guy

01:03:14can you do anything with taunts could i have a taunt that triggers anything you can set it up where
01:03:18taunts uh if you taunt during the match we've actually there's another map i can't remember the name
01:03:22of it where every time you taunt the demons get madder and madder at you that's amazing more and more
