00:04Hello and welcome to the Hearts of Iron 4 beginner tutorial. Today we will cover battle plans,
00:10their various functions and the different ways you can order your troops to fight for you.
00:14We'll be using our successful Germany for this example where they wish to advance into the
00:18Soviet Empire. Looking at the border with Russia, it is a large area and it has many provinces.
00:25Whilst individual divisions can be commanded province by province, it is often better to set
00:31up large battle plans. We'll be starting with lining our troops along the border.
00:39First make a front line by selecting your army and clicking the front line button and then select the
00:45border where you want your troops to line up and attack from. The army group will automatically
00:50line up to form a defensive line there.
00:57In addition to this, I want to focus south with my motorized divisions. So instead of assigning
01:03them to the entire border, I select the front line command and right click to stretch the
01:09line to the desired size. This front line can be edited on the fly by holding CTRL and stretching
01:15the line. Similarly, we'll make a front line for our armoured divisions to the north.
01:42After we unpause, all units will move into position.
01:51With our armies in position and eyeing up the Soviet forces, we can start to construct our
01:57battle plan. For example, with our infantry heavy group, we want to make a solid push into Russia.
02:03We select the group, click on offensive line, and then right click to draw the line we want
02:09them to advance to. And when hovering over the plans arrow, we will see the predicted path
02:15that our troops will take.
02:35With our motorized units to the south, we will draw an offensive line 2. This time, a multi-step plan.
03:03We'll also draw a plan for our tanks to attack north to try to take Leningrad. Just like the front
03:10line,
03:10this can be edited by holding down CTRL and dragging the lines you have drawn.
03:33click the arrows above your army groups to execute the entire plan. When we unpause, our units will take the
03:39actions that we have prescribed.
03:52If you wish to order your units to fall back, you can create a fallback line for your units to
03:57retreat to, the same way in a fence is drawn up.
03:59Select the fallback line, and drag where you want your units to relocate to. In this example, we will draw
04:06most of our line behind a river, to offer ourselves some added defense against any Soviet attackers.
04:24Once the line is drawn, select the division assignment button, and click on the fallback line to order your troops
04:30to regroup there.
04:48Your units will space themselves out along this line, and defend it from oncoming attacks.
05:06If you wish to perform naval invasions, simply select a group, and click on the naval invasion button.
05:12From here, you can select a friendly port, and the destination for your invasion. In this case, we wish to
05:18depart from Danzig, and sail through the Baltic to land near Leningrad.
05:22Additional commands can be given to be executed upon arrival.
05:31Once the naval invasion plan has been drawn up, you must wait for preparation time to pass, depending on the
05:37size of the invasion, and sufficient naval superiority must be in place to undertake it.
05:41Select a fleet, and have them patrol the area, by clicking patrol, and right clicking on the sea region that
05:47you will be invading through.
05:49If all goes well, your units will safely make beachhead, and carry out their orders.
06:12Finally, once you have of course triumphed over your enemy, you may wish for certain areas to be garrisoned.
06:18Use the garrison command to assign units where they will defend the area.
06:22Particularly, ports and major cities.
06:26In this case, we will defend some of our newly acquired coastline.
06:42Battle plans play a huge role in conducting warfare in Hearts of Iron IV.
06:46Experiment with these tools, and draw masterful invasions.
07:03including others.
