00:04For Sea of Thieves there's lots of different lighting systems out there and we talk about
00:09the way the colour bounces around the environment and we achieve that through using LPV which
00:14is? Like propagating volumes. There you go. So it just enables us to get that bounce
00:20light that we want so when the sun hits the sand the volume gives off this cell of light
00:27that illuminates the rock that's sitting next to the sun so it gives that nice illusion of the bounce
00:31light. We've got a lighting blueprint that we drop into the world and it's fully customisable you can
00:40we've got many curves that we can use. How many curves do you reckon we've got? We've got a lot
00:43we're always asking for more. At the moment it's about 98 curves so it gives us full
00:49control over everything. And each of those curves is time of day as well? All time of day, yeah. The
00:53colour of the sun, the height, the speed it goes
00:56through the sky. We've got different time zones like we've got midday, afternoon, morning and night.
01:01But we've also got the transitional time between those times. So if you have like a deep red sunset
01:06and a bluey sky in the day when those colours mix together it might not look correct so you've got
01:12these
01:12in-between transitions where we have to further tweak the colours to make it look natural. Every hour I've got
01:18a different keyframe and then even at some points every half hour to every 10 minutes there's a slight change.
01:26just to make it seem seamless. So by the end of the project you may have just hand done every
01:31single
01:31minute every single hour of the day. It's like a house of cards like you make one change and then
01:36you spend the rest of the day slightly tweaking little bits all the way down the line. So like a
01:41good
01:41hero moment is the sun setting. So throughout the day we can actually speed up and slow down the sun
01:47and we can let it hang on the horizon to give you that nice sunset image and just let it
01:53last that bit
01:54longer. As the sun sets it gives the illusion that it gets bigger so we increase the disc size of
02:01the sun. As well with sunrise we expand it just as it rises out of the horizon. It's those golden
02:06hours.
02:07Yeah that's it. It's really good at sunrise really good at sunset and there's this boring middle bit
02:11that we kind of just speed it up and hang on those moments. At the end of the day it's
02:17like all this tech
02:18it's just invisible. That's the point of lighting isn't it? You don't want to see it really. You don't want
02:24to
02:24notice it and then you know you've done a good job. No one says that's amazing lighting. They say
02:29it's an amazing sunset. Yeah exactly. If the sunsets look really nice as well you can all stop doing
02:34battle and check out the sunset and relax. Absolutely. Maybe you meet another another ship along the way
02:39and you decide to not fire at each other. Not do battle. Just enjoy it. Enjoy the moment.
