Minister for emergency management Kristy McBain spoke earlier at the national situation room in Canberra, providing an update on the cyclone. She says Narelle is a "very intense system" and residents in its path need to prepare.

00:01At this stage, wind gusts in excess of 250 km an hour are possible near the centre of
00:07the cyclone as it crosses the Queensland coast. Winds of 155 km per hour are possible from
00:14Lockhart River to Cooktown tonight. Heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding is possible
00:20between Cape Melville and Port Douglas from this evening, extending inland during Friday.
00:25After crossing the northeast Queensland coast, Norell is forecast to continue across Cape York
00:33Peninsula and into the Gulf of Carpentaria and it is likely to move towards the Northern
00:37Territory where it will again make landfall in a few days time. Northern Territory residents
00:43in the cyclone's path should also be preparing now and I understand are now in a watch zone.
00:50Please be ready to enact your emergency plans and follow the advice of emergency services.
00:55Look out for vulnerable community members including children and the elderly.
