Did the Falcons overthink things when it came to the Georgia Bulldogs' program down the street? The new regime seems determined to change that.
Transcript
00:00Talk about the Falcons, because today is Georgia's Pro Day.
00:03And what does that mean?
00:04Well, I mean, you got some Georgia Bulldogs.
00:06Now, not as many in this year's class that you would be as interested in, perhaps,
00:09because, you know, the 90 years, the Eagles drafted all the Georgia Bulldogs,
00:14so Jacksonville got them, and the Falcons are like, no, I don't need that.
00:17But it goes all the way back to Dimitro.
00:19We'll get into that a lot today.
00:21Take some of your phone calls, because it was interesting.
00:23I posted that.
00:24And, you know, some things you post on social media, and it's kind of like a, you know,
00:28that's a no-S-Sherlock thing to say.
00:30I said, hey, you know, after decades of, for some reason, not realizing Athens has got the talent,
00:35we're there in force today.
00:37And it got a lot of folks hitting it back and retweeting it and liking it.
00:40So I think it's just common sense.
00:42The SEC puts the best players in college football, and Georgia is part of the SEC.
00:46You know, last year we got two with Jalen Walker, and then, of course,
00:49we all know what happened with James Pierce Jr.,
00:51but I think we're just scratching the surface with Jalen Walker.
00:55One thing for certain, you know, Pierce was kind of a complete, you know,
00:58whack-a-doodle off the field, and we hope that he gets his life in order,
01:01and we'll see how the NFL disciplines him.
01:03And if the Falcons bring him back, I think they will.
01:05But Jalen Walker, I mean, I'm not trying to make it about this guy versus that guy,
01:09but, Dave, we spoke with Jalen Walker.
01:11Day-Day was in the room that day out at Falcons.
01:13It's like you're talking to a CEO from a Fortune 500 company.
01:16So, I mean, just so impressive, so dialed in, you know,
01:20everything that you as a Georgia fan should be proud of, you know,
01:23when you talk about guys that are representing your program.
01:24Well, it was one of the frustrating things last season, right,
01:27was some of the injuries he dealt with that kind of wouldn't let him gear up to 100%.
01:31And I know he was good, but I still think there's obviously more there,
01:35which is partially exciting in terms of his development.
01:39And obviously with no Pierce, he'll probably be counted on a little bit more
01:43along with some of the new guys.
01:44But, look, you talk about Georgia players,
01:47and one of the reasons that it's such a sticking point here
01:51is that those guys come in and are significant, right?
01:54It wouldn't be a big deal if they didn't come in and absolutely,
01:57especially on the defensive side and the offensive line too,
02:01absolutely handle business for the teams that draft him,
02:05become playmakers and really, a stronger word, difference makers.
02:09Right.
02:10That's what hurts.
02:11Yeah, I mean, it's not that complicated.
02:13And it's funny because a couple of, like it was two springs ago,
02:16because we had Jalen Walker, so that was a no-brainer.
02:18But I went back and I looked at it, and it was like literally less than two dozen
02:22Georgia players going back to 1966, which is crazy.
02:26I mean, you know, Vince Dooley put some really good guys in the NFL.
02:29You know, Ray Goff had great talent.
02:30You know, Jim Donnan had great talent.
02:31He didn't know how to use it.
02:32But, you know, some of those defenses, I got here in 98,
02:35and that was the year I think it was Gary Gibbs came in
02:38because Donnan knew him from Oklahoma back in the day.
02:40And day-day, it was like Stroud and Seymour, you know, Charles Grant.
02:45I mean, all these dudes, you know, there was always a great pipeline.
02:48It's kind of like if you're a Florida fan.
02:50You know, the years that they had Galen Hall as the head coach,
02:54or Charlotte Pail.
02:55And it's like you put all these guys in the NFL,
02:57we're not doing anything with them.
02:58And then Spurrier gets there.
02:59It's like, hello, you needed something.
03:01And to a degree, no disrespect to Johnny Majors,
03:04Fulmer did the same thing, I think, to an extent with Tennessee,
03:07where it's kind of like you're getting out of, you know,
03:09that old school three yards in a cloud of dust,
03:11and let's get rolling with the modern game.
03:12Anyway, we'll talk about the Falcons
03:14and who are the guys that you might be interested in.
03:16I think, and we'll debate it,
03:17because Abe thinks some of the guys that some Falcon fans
03:21won't be there.
03:21No, sir.
03:22I don't know, man.
03:23Because I do these mock drafts, and Carl laughs at me
03:25because it's like, well, what site did you use?
03:27Well, I used, you know, PFF.
03:29Or I used, you know, ProDraft Simulator or whatever.
03:34Everybody's got different, and I hate to use analytics
03:37and the phrase like metrics.
03:38I know I use metrics in a sentence all the time,
03:40but everybody's got their own metrics on this crap.
03:42And so what's the valuation?
03:44Who are you using?
03:45Some guys use composites of all the so-called experts,
03:48like the Daniel Jeremiah's and the Mel Kuyper's hair helmet,
03:50Todd McShay, et cetera.
03:51But it's hard for a fan.
03:53It's one thing, and I said this a couple times,
03:55the NFL, for all the ways they make money,
03:57you know how much more money they could make
03:58if you had an NFL official website using all the data
04:01from the draft and the combine,
04:03I mean, from the pre-draft information,
04:05and charged $10?
04:06And guys would pay it,
04:07because I'm paying $5 to use a website right now.
04:11I'm sorry, Abe.
04:12I mean, because I like to make trades
04:13and all these different options
04:14that sometimes you can't get otherwise.
04:16I know.
04:17I'm in order for this.
04:17Have we done the official Dukes and Bell 92.9,
04:20the game, chat, GPT, mock draft?
04:23Not yet.
04:24No, I stay away from chat.
04:25I do it myself, for God's sakes.
04:27Where's your pride?
04:28Compare it.
04:28What are you, a kid?
04:29Cheating on an exam using your chat GPT?
04:32Yeah, thank you.
04:33It's bad enough I use AI enough sometimes.
04:36I'm just saying it's free.
04:37That's all.
04:38I know.
04:38It's a free version.
04:39No, no, but I've done a few mocks.
04:41Some of the mocks, Christian Miller is there.
04:42A few.
04:43Five.
04:44Really?
04:44That's all?
04:45Five.
04:46Again, Carl's not here to defend himself making fun of me,
04:50but Carl, enough.
04:51Will you stop with the mocks?
04:52And then people mock me, but as I said, you'll do a mock draft,
04:55and as we say on social media, we talked about it.
04:57Go outside, nerd.
04:58I talked about it yesterday, Oren.
04:59No good deed goes unpunished, because you put a mock draft out there
05:02using the resources and the data that that website aggregator used,
05:06and then somebody always thinks about,
05:08you'll never get that guy.
05:10That draft will never happen.
05:13That's the question I have for you.
05:14What's the more common response?
05:16That guy's not going to be there?
05:17You'll never get that draft.
05:19Go outside, nerd.
05:19Why would you want that guy?
05:20That guy's no good, one of those.
05:21Or, again, why'd you get that guy?
05:23Because that was the best guy available, Jack Legg.
05:25Yes, I know I needed a corner.
05:26There wasn't a – I mean, you want to sit there,
05:28and I'm going to stream it in real time, and now with the 114th pick.
05:32No, but that's the kind of stuff you get.
05:33No good deed goes unpunished on the social media.
05:35You make that pick in the mock draft, and they mock you.
05:38It's true.
05:38Ian and Matt make that pick on draft day,
05:40and all of a sudden they get praised by the same folks making fun of you.
05:43Right, and the worst part is sometimes when you get somebody that you mocked
05:48and he was always there, and then they draft him, and then he sucks.
05:52You know, and that's one of those – I've had a few of those where, like,
05:55ha-ha, I had that guy, and then it's like, oh, he's not very good.
05:59He's not very good, yes.
06:00You have to pull it back.
06:01I'm no longer excited I was right about that pick.
06:03Well, for instance, I'll give you an example.
06:06I'll take it back.
06:07A couple years ago, we were doing the mock drafts
06:09because it's just when Fontenot came in, and we didn't know what Fontenot was going to be,
06:12how he was going to go about his business.
06:14I had a mock draft where I picked Richie Grant in the second round
06:17and Jalen Mayfield in the third, and Richie was the kind of guy that was an older senior.
06:23He played corner, so I thought it was kind of a ball hawking –
06:25kind of what we have now with Billy Bowman, but that's what we thought we were getting.
06:28Not even close.
06:29He was all right.
06:30Yeah, he's the other one.
06:31But Jalen Mayfield –
06:32You know, you think Jalen Mayfield, tackle Michigan.
06:34How do you screw that up?
06:36Yeah.
06:36And a guy that's going to kick inside, and he was dreadful.
06:39He was absolutely dreadful.
06:41Do you sometimes, like years down the road, do you wonder,
06:42how did this guy hold up in the Big Ten?
06:44Right.
06:45Specifically the Big Ten and SEC, how did this guy hold up
06:48and then just become such a liability at this level?
06:51I never know.
06:52No, and it's like when we took Troy Anderson, and the guy's like,
06:54man, you're really hard on Troy Anderson.
06:55He's never played.
06:56And if he plays, like I said, I'll look forward to talking to Trey this year in camp
07:00and say, you know, how have you been keeping your chin up?
07:02Because people have forgotten about you.
07:04Like, you don't even exist in the Falcon world.
07:06I had the same conversation a little bit with Braylon Trice.
07:09Right, and I love Braylon.
07:10Remember, we always joke around about Braylon.
07:12I mentioned Trice, and I liked him out of camp, first camp,
07:14before he got his knee blown out in the preseason game.
07:16We viewed him as a first-round talent.
07:18Right, and remember I'm talking with D-Lead, and that was the famous D-Lead quote,
07:21no, Mike, he ain't special, he ain't nothing.
07:23I'm like, come on, D.
07:25Braylon's good.
07:25He's a leader.
07:26No, no, he ain't that guy.
07:28He ain't that dude.
07:30So now we're going to see if Braylon's going to be that guy.
07:33But Troy Anderson, the year that we drafted him, I had us taking, who was it,
07:37Patino, the guy that went to the Broncos from Oklahoma.
07:41Oh, yeah, Nick, yeah, yeah.
07:41Nick Patino, and this guy's like a sack machine.
07:43He's got like 30 sacks already.
07:44He's a footballer, just write him on in.
07:45And other fans wanted N'Kobe Dean, who I thought maybe would be undersized for what we were
07:49trying to do, but they go with Troy Anderson, who was like, for younger guys, you may hear
07:54the phrase, a Mike Mamoula-like guy.
07:56He was the first, he's like the archetype for the first guy that nobody ever heard of, and
08:01he popped at the combine, and all of a sudden he got critical mass, and everybody was talking
08:05about this guy, and he was a great big nothing.
08:07I think it was the Eagles drafted him, right?
08:08Mike Mamoula, was that who drafted him?
08:10Yeah, exactly.
08:11Wrong era.
08:11It don't matter.
08:11But I mean, that's sort of an NFL draft code for just a lot of hype and a whole lot
08:17of
08:17nothing.
08:18I mean, I'm just out on combine darlings to begin with.
08:22Like, that's just never been an interest to me.
08:25I know Georgia had their pro day, and everyone's looking at, look at the numbers, look at the
08:29speed, look at this, look at that.
08:30Just show me tape, man.
08:32Right.
08:32I had it right.
08:33He's drafted by the Eagles.
08:34Yeah, and that's why it goes back to, not to keep dumping on Jalen Mayfield, but that's
08:39why it goes back to a guy like Mayfield.
08:40Like, how do you look this way on tape in that conference and then nothing on Sundays?
08:48But the combine stuff, I can't get behind it.
08:52Right.
08:52I just, numbers are the numbers.
08:54It's fun to watch as a fan, but I don't let that impact how I feel about a player once
08:59I've seen what he can do.
09:00Like the Reuben Bain stuff, too small or short, you mean the guy that was the best pass rusher
09:05far and away the entire run of college football playoffs?
09:08I'm just going to guess he'll be okay.
09:10Right.
09:10I mean, you go by, for me, it's on film, right?
09:14So you've got guys you saw, and we are of the opinion, if you're playing for the schools
09:20that matter in the Big Ten and the SEC, and the two or three schools that matter in the
09:26ACC, and the two or three that matter in the Big 12, you know, those are guys that get
09:29your attention.
09:30Let me actually pull it.
09:31Right?
09:32Am I lying?
09:32Oh, I'm going to pull the sideways switch on you here.
09:34I'd almost rather you play for a school that doesn't matter going up against the schools
09:38and overachieving.
09:39And overachieving.
09:39Right.
09:39Be offensive lineman.
09:40As opposed to being surrounded by great talent.
09:42Or be an offensive lineman for Purdue.
09:43How do you hold up against Ohio State?
09:45Against Indiana.
09:46Yeah.
09:47You can kind of look at it that way, too.
09:48But I mean, you look at this level of talent, and you look right now, just real quick.
09:53Daniel Jeremiah is top 50.
09:55Indiana.
09:55Ohio State.
09:56Miami.
09:57Notre Dame.
09:57And Notre Dame has put some great talent in the NFL.
09:59Ohio State.
10:00Ohio State.
10:00Miami.
10:01Texas Tech.
10:01They spent some big money on transfers.
10:03Their defense was lights out.
10:05Utah.
10:05Ohio State.
10:06LSU.
10:07Tennessee.
10:07USC.
10:08Arizona.
10:08See a pattern?
10:09Miami.
10:09These are all the guys that are going in the projected top 25.
10:12The big schools.
10:13Georgia's got a bunch as well.
10:14A&M.
10:15Because they played at the highest level.
10:17So there is sometimes the hype becomes self-sustaining, to your point.
10:20But we'll see if the Falcons are going to take some dark horses, or are we going to go
10:25with name brands in this draft?
10:26And part of that is having all of the Falcons executives, at least in the personnel department,
10:30out there to look at Georgia's pro day today.
10:33How much pressure?
10:33And I know we're still a ways away from the draft, but how much pressure ultimately falls
10:39on whoever the Falcons take at 48?
10:42Because they don't have a first-round pick, and you kind of just look at...
10:45You become the de facto first-rounder, right?
10:47Well, but you also come with the pressure to perform and be impactful for this team when
10:53you're the first guy taken, whether it's the first round or not.
10:56And so, yeah, I think that's going to be interesting as well.
10:59Is there pressure, not just on the player, but almost on the organization?
11:03Like, hey, you took this guy.
11:05He was your selection.
11:06He's got to play.
11:07Well, I mean, it's interesting, also the concept, how you view players.
11:10I think we found with Terry Fontenot, it was like...
11:14The phrase, falling in love, was real.
11:16They fell in love with Michael Penix Jr.
11:17There were a lot of executives picking in the top 15 that were not in love with Michael
11:21Penix Jr. because of the injury history.
11:23We fell in love with him.
11:24We fell in love...
11:24Now, look, the good news, bad news, we fell in love with James Pierce Jr., and he had a
11:29great rookie season.
11:30And unfortunately, all the rumors, as Carl said, he heard a lot of stuff from Tennessee
11:33people about the stuff.
11:35There was a lot of trouble with Rekia Jackson at Tennessee.
11:38There was a lot of stuff, and sometimes guys speak in code, you know, about players, and
11:41sometimes it's a bunch of nonsense.
11:43You know, I always say, well, what's the real story?
11:45And then there was a reason why there were guys that were giving him the Heisman, meaning
11:49like the stand-away arm.
11:51They were not going to go down that road.
11:53We would have drafted him at 15 if we hadn't had Jalen Walker fall to us.
11:56But real quick, just before we wrap up this first segment, looking at the top 50, this
12:00is from Daniel Jeremiah.
12:01Everyone's got your guy.
12:02He's my guy.
12:03The dude that I think is pretty good at the job.
12:06Zion Young from Missouri, edge rusher at 41.
12:10Chris Johnson, one of the higher-rated corners from San Diego State.
12:13These are all guys in the 40s.
12:15Why are you making a face like someone farted in church?
12:17No, no.
12:17I sent Oren a text, because my brain works weird.
12:20You know that.
12:21I sent Oren a text.
12:22I'm waiting for a reaction.
12:23That's all.
12:24You guys, what the hell's going on?
12:25Is it a telephone game?
12:27Oren, what the hell is going on here?
12:29I didn't deem it valuable enough for on-air, so I just sent it to him directly.
12:31Bring it in.
12:31Bring it in.
12:32Now what?
12:33Abe likes to remix songs.
12:35They come up with due titles for songs.
12:35I like to write parody songs in my head.
12:37Oh, am I boring you?
12:38No, it was based on what you said.
12:41It was about what you had said.
12:43Which was?
12:43So instead of we have a Rihanna, we fell in love in a hopeless place.
12:47It's now, we fell in love with a hopeless case.
12:50A hopeless case.
12:51A hopeless case.
12:52A hopeless case.
12:53I hope someone would say hopeless case.
12:55There you go.
12:55Well done, Abe.
12:56No, just there you go.
12:57He's got a whole no-tap photo stuff on the way.
12:59All of a sudden, the radio show, 15 minutes in, it became Inception.
13:01We're going to level below.
13:03And there's a new level.
13:04I got a bunch of Disney remixes if you want to hear them.
13:06We're three levels into the show.
13:07There's the on-air level, then there's the stuff that goes on between the show.
13:10The show within the show within the show.
13:12I mean, it's a matter of.
13:12Brandon from South Carolina, a corner.
13:16Linebacker, Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech.
13:18They have been where?
13:1948.
13:2045.
13:21Daniel Jeremiah.
13:21Oh, I don't think so.
13:22Hold on.
13:23Mason Thomas, Oklahoma.
13:24Keontae Scott, Miami.
13:26That's a corner.
13:27Antonio Williams.
13:28Clemson fans know him.
13:29A couple of these guys are good.
13:30And then there's Jeremy Bernard from Alabama at 50.
13:33If you want to beef up your wide receiver, Ruben, you really will go best out for you.
13:36A couple of those guys are pretty good players, Mike.
13:37But the reason I mention those guys is because that's where we're picking.
13:39That's where we're living.
13:40So those are the names.
13:41I didn't hear Christian Miller there.
13:43No, Christian Miller, he's got him out of the top 50.
13:45That's why I think we could get him.
13:46I trust Daniel Jeremiah over your spidey sense.
13:49We'll come back.
13:50We'll see you on draft day, Mike.
13:51Hey, man.
13:51This hour of Dukes and Bale with Abe Billin and brought you by Wise Guys Pro Wash.
13:55Get the stuff to pile it off the house.
13:58Get the pros to the businessmen.
