00:16When we started working on the concept art for Horizon Zero Dawn,
00:20it was almost as if Aloy as a character kind of jumped out of the concept art.
00:25She was the ideal vessel, I felt, to explore this world,
00:30to unravel some of these great mysteries.
00:36Years before we had her in the way that she is now in the game.
00:41Praying won't save us, we have to find the killers.
00:44Such a massive, long, ongoing, iterative process, I would say.
00:49Finally, when all the elements came together, we felt like, yeah, this is her, this is Aloy.
00:56I think we've created and designed a very strong character that hopefully we'll see a lot more of.
01:06I think it's really hard to design an iconic character.
01:09You can hope for it, but it's not something like, okay, that's it, put a stamp on it, it's iconic
01:14now.
01:15There are people even within this building, who are, they were feeling like,
01:19it's like, oh, how do we try to, you know, get something that's like to 90% of Nathan Drake.
01:25Looking at the Killzone games, we were kind of doing it the wrong way around.
01:29With Aloy, we had a protagonist now that is as strong and as iconic a character as the Hellgas were
01:38as antagonists.
01:42There's so many, I think, different layers also to designing a character.
01:46She's this combination of a voice actress.
01:49There's the face, there's the hair, we have the costume, there's how she moves.
01:54There's the dialogue that also adds to her character.
01:57You can help, or you can get out of my way.
02:02It's nice after so many years to have it out there and hear people, what they think about it, what
02:08they like about it.
02:10It's been super invigorating seeing the immediate response to Aloy as a character.
02:16I mean, in the cosplay scene, there's been such a huge interest in finding out more who she is.
02:23It's very clear that, at least for these people, Aloy is already an iconic character.
02:28To get that confirmation that we actually touch upon something that's relevant and people respond to it very positively,
02:36that's hugely, hugely positive for the team.
02:39You've come a long way since the Citadel, Aloy.
02:42Who are you?
02:43An interested party.
02:44A large part of what made her is the narrative itself.
02:48It started shaping her as an identity, as a character.
02:51So ultimately, whether we give her red hair or blonde hair or dark hair, isn't really that important.
02:56It's more that the character itself becomes iconic.
03:03I don't think that there's anybody working at Guerilla Games who hasn't fallen in love with Aloy.
03:08I mean, for us, she has become someone who feels like a real person.
03:14The nice thing about our story, the way that it's written, is that she's emerging from the area that she's
03:20lived her whole life
03:21and going out into the big world along with you.
03:23So everything is just as new to her as it is to you.
03:26And you feel a real resonance with the character that way.
03:35Aloy is, I think, a very appealing character in the way she looks.
03:39But more importantly, the stuff she can do.
03:42I mean, she's super agile.
03:44She's quick.
03:45She's very crafty.
03:46She's very strategic.
03:48She's a great person, a great companion to explore the world of Horizons here at Dawn.
03:56Where the trail leads, I will go.
