00:00Welcome to an inside look at Nex Machina, the newest top-down shooter from Housemarque.
00:04We're here today to announce a few features.
00:07First of all, the season structure, where you can rank yourself up and play against those top people on leaderboards.
00:13Second of all, challenges, which are many modified versions of the campaign.
00:17And third of all, the replay mode, where you can follow other people's playthroughs and learn for yourself on how
00:22to get those top spots.
00:24Let's talk to the game director Harry Kruger about more of this.
00:27So, first of all, let's talk about the season structure.
00:30So the idea here is that you can go in and for a limited time, you can kind of gain
00:35ranks and then work yourself through these leaderboards and so on.
00:39That's the idea there?
00:41Yeah, so the idea is basically that on top of the core game experience,
00:46which will of course have the standard arcade and single level modes and all that stuff that we've explored before,
00:52we also want to kind of create more competitive environment basically for players to interact in.
01:00And the idea with the seasons is that these would last for a specific amount of time, whether it's like
01:07a few weeks, months, whatever.
01:09We'll see how that goes and how the community responds to these things.
01:12So basically these challenges, let's say that they change on a weekly basis for example, and then we can bring
01:20in new challenges that very much change up the game.
01:23What kind of challenges are we looking at?
01:25And the way that the game has been structured, all of the key defining parameters for the gameplay are basically
01:33listed in this so-called game rules list, right?
01:37And the idea is that we would mix and match different combinations of these game rules to create slightly different
01:44experiences.
01:44One example here is the overall game speed. So you can just crank that up to be twice as fast
01:51and then just see how long you can survive, you know?
01:56Or you could just have these flags that toggle, for instance, enemy revenge bullets.
02:02So then all of the enemies just start spawning these, you know, revenge bullet patterns that create this layer of
02:08reactive gameplay.
02:09And what about the replay mode? So the idea there is to kind of build up this community that you
02:15can see the other players' runs and then learn from them.
02:19What happens is all of your leaderboard entries are effectively recorded and then you can go to the leaderboard, select
02:25an entry and watch the actual replay of that run.
02:28We're quite proud about the fact that Next Machina is a very demanding game based on...
02:35It requires a lot of skillful play, there's a lot of secrets, there's a lot of things to uncover, there's
02:41a lot of depth in the scoring system.
02:43In some cases you might be left with a lot of unanswered questions.
02:47And instead of just having players go to Google and just start typing like what the hell is happening,
02:52we'd really want to encourage that extension of the experience to be, well, integrated into the game.
02:57Within the game, yeah.
02:58So they can just check a replay and be like, oh cool, so this is what I was missing, maybe
03:02I'll try that.
03:03A large part of these features have been inspired by the feeling we used to get when we played actual
03:11arcade cabinets back in the day.
03:12And that feeling of a tight community that would all be kind of competing towards, you know, getting the best
03:19score at a given game, for example.
03:22Occasionally you would have these arcade heroes, so to speak.
03:26And you would go there and you'd see like this one guy who's been playing this game for like an
03:31hour and is about to beat the all time highest score there.
03:34And you know, everyone would kind of go quiet and start assembling around them.
03:39And there'd be this... you would share the intensity and the excitement of that moment, you know.
03:45And that's something that kind of inspired us to include this and try to capture a bit of that community
03:52building aspect.
03:53It's like, oh, you know, Mikhail did this, I want to see how he did this run.
03:56And, oh, he actually found his secrets there and maybe I can use that to improve my run.
04:00Then I one-up your score and then you check mine out.
04:03And, you know, have this... give each player, instead of just having these random names on the leaderboard, give each
04:10of them a personality.
04:12Yeah. Thanks, man. This has been a really cool insight into how the competitive and community scene of Nex Machina
04:18is looking to kind of draw out.
04:21And I think we'll have more information later on. Thanks, man.
04:24Absolutely. Pleasure.
04:41Thank you.
04:42Thank you.
