00:00Hello everyone and welcome to Behind the Scenes, I'm here with Christina Parker who is our live campaign producer on
00:05Sea of Thieves
00:05and we're here to find out exactly what live campaigns are, so what are they?
00:09Live campaigns are time limited events that will happen in games, so they're exclusive, they only last for a certain
00:15amount of time
00:16and they're meant to spice up the everyday gameplay and potentially give you a unique experience and also a unique
00:22reward.
00:23And how does that fit into the ethos of Sea of Thieves?
00:25Well that's actually a really interesting question because campaigns are a directed event, you know, it's time limited
00:31we want you to go and do something at a specific time or experience something at a specific time
00:36but within Sea of Thieves it's an emergent world, it's all about bringing more story and more unique experiences to
00:42Sea of Thieves
00:43but how we implement it is something we're still working on.
00:46So we've started these hot topics on our forums which allow some of the community who are Insider members
00:51so if you sign up for the Insider program you can get access to those.
00:54To have this conversation around, for example, the second one now being live campaigns, how exactly have they responded to
01:02that?
01:02I think that it's been a topic that's been discussed even before we did the hot topic
01:06so I think it's great to have this central place where people can go and share their ideas and experiences
01:10and we've been getting a lot of examples of positive things to do in game, negative things that they just
01:15didn't like from other games
01:19and I think that that's part of the whole development process that's unique to Sea of Thieves
01:23is taking what players actually say and considering it for our future development process
01:27because hopefully live campaigns will be this long and ongoing thing in this long and ongoing game
01:32so it really matters what our players want and how we deliver that to them.
01:36So what's the difference between content updates and live campaigns?
01:41Well I think right now we do content updates which are on a weekly basis
01:45as a lot of our technical alpha participants will see
01:47as we don't always have a technical alpha but we always do have a new upload for the game
01:51and a campaign will be unique in that it doesn't rely on a content update for us to initiate it
01:57so it could be as small as we're going to do something this Friday and it's going to last for
02:00three hours
02:00but you don't have to download anything new to do it
02:02or it could be a month long thing or a week long thing that can potentially encompass multiple content updates.
02:08Like as examples of those sorts of things what can we expect to see?
02:13Well you know it's all very hush hush a little bit so I think it's safe to say we'll have
02:17some seasonal events
02:19there's been a lot of discussion about what different games have done for Halloween and for Christmas
02:23but we are definitely a game for everyone so I don't want to leave out any holidays
02:26so it's a bit of decision process right now about what we do first
02:30so seasonal events, community events, social events
02:33So when it comes to live campaigns like we have an open world
02:38like what is the difference between those kind of more scripted events and the open world?
02:43That is part of the really careful design process that we're doing right now is this
02:46we have this open sandbox-ish emergent world and we're going to be putting these directed goals in there
02:52which are similar to our voyages but on a grander scale
02:55so how do we ask people to participate in this really scripted thing potentially
03:00for whatever duration we plan versus just their open experience and choice to do anything
03:05so I think it comes down to a lot of showmanship
03:09it's about fitting it well within the world, making it seem seamless
03:13to have reasons for why it's there for a certain amount of time and then fades out
03:17and as long as it fits into the theme and the lore of Sea of Thieves I think the players
03:21will love it.
