00:14On today's show we are playing Sundered on PS4,
00:17which is out this summer,
00:18and to help us play and navigate this chilling and interesting world,
00:23I have Will from Thunder Lotus Games.

00:29And I'm also joined by Justin,
00:31who is going to be our very happy pilot for the demo.
00:35Hi there.
00:36Justin, you have been challenged to not die during this episode.
00:40Yeah.
00:40At one point while we were getting ready for this,
00:43Will said,
00:44uh, yeah, and you're probably going to die at some point.
00:46And I said, uh, excuse me.
00:49Excuse me.
00:50But we'll see.
00:51I mean, it's very possible,
00:52because our experience with this is limited to say the least.
00:55But yeah, Sundered, obviously,
00:57if you can't already tell just by looking at it,
01:00gorgeous hand-drawn adventure game,
01:02uh, you know, in classic tradition.
01:05Uh, Will, tell me a little bit about, you know,
01:07some of the things that kind of,
01:08the visions that drove you guys to create Sundered.
01:11Yeah.
01:11So Sundered is a horrifying fight for survival insanity.
01:14You play Esh.
01:15Okay.
01:16You got right into the thick of it, didn't you?
01:18Yeah.
01:19Well, you're playing Esh, a wanderer in a ruined world
01:21who becomes trapped in these ever-changing caverns filled
01:24with hordes of terrifying enemies.
01:26Uh, and, uh, yeah, no, I'm super happy to be here with you
01:30guys to show off the game.
01:33Great.
01:33Yeah.
01:34Well, we're happy to have you.
01:35I haven't died yet.
01:36Just FYI.
01:37Well, you literally just started, bud.
01:39Um, so I think the plan is Justin is going to haphazardly
01:43make his way through, um, the, you know,
01:46this is kind of towards the beginning of the game,
01:47you said, right, Will?
01:48Yeah.
01:48So we'll play for a couple minutes,
01:50and then we are going to skip ahead, um,
01:52a couple minutes into the episode,
01:53and, uh, maybe face a, uh, boss.
01:56Yeah.
01:57So when we last talked, we were at PSX,
02:00and, uh, we were showing off, uh, the really early version
02:03of the game, which was the, the second region of the game,
02:06which is more the Eschaton regions.
02:08And the Eschaton are these crazy cultists who worship dark gods.
02:13And now, uh, we're in the first region of the game here,
02:15which is more, uh, the Valkyrie region.
02:18And the Valkyrie are a group of people
02:19who are very driven by, by science
02:21and by, like, um, army strength and that kind of thing.
02:25And, uh, and they came in, there's the, the whole backstory
02:28of the world is how these two factions kind of came together
02:31and ended up in this strange place.
02:32And, you know, what's going on over here?
02:34And why are you here?
02:35And that's what you want to kind of uncover.
02:37Justin, can you actually just go back into that area,
02:39like right in front of that statue?
02:41I just want to take in, uh, we're not going to see it again.
02:44Let's do that.
02:45There's so much going on in the background here.
02:47Gorgeous.
02:48Yeah.
02:48We'll even look at kind of the parallax effects
02:50of the different kind of broken test tubes there
02:52in the foreground.
02:53I love how, how much depth there is.
02:56I know.
02:56You guys even went through the trouble of making them all dirtied up
02:59and eroded by time, which just gives it such a great quality.
03:04Um, should we just give the obligatory shout out to the artists
03:08on your team for their ridiculous work?
03:10Yeah, absolutely.
03:10We have an amazing team of artists and animators.
03:14Sundered was done by two 2D artists and two animators.
03:18So it's not a lot of people.
03:21It's a big team for a smaller game,
03:23but you just wasted your health elixir there.
03:27Oh, is that what that was?
03:27Yeah.
03:28I did the classic thing that you do when you play a new game,
03:31just hammer all the buttons and see what they do.
03:33Yeah, no, that's good.
03:34If you want to bring up your map, you hold L2, the left trigger,
03:37and that will bring it up to like a bigger version.
03:40But it doesn't pause your game,
03:41so you don't want to do that while there are monsters on screen.
03:43Justin, that upward slash you just did looked like she was
03:46in a dance pose real quick.
03:48Love it.
03:49All right.
03:50So you want to head down to the left here.
03:52Okay. Let's go.
03:53If only everyone could play with Will sitting next to them
03:56so that he can guide them along on their journey.
03:59Except that I was wrong.
04:02Okay. I went down and to the left one now.
04:06We're ready for our next instruction.
04:08So that's a shortcut.
04:10There are many shortcuts that you unlock in the game
04:15because the world is actually procedurally generated.
04:19But the overall structure is set in stone.
04:22So every time you die, the subsections are reset,
04:25but the overall structure doesn't change.
04:28Okay. Interesting.
04:29So there's a nice mix of both expected and unexpected
04:33that you're going to find.
04:34Yeah, absolutely.
04:35And we do have like these old style abilities that help you
04:39unlock new regions and give you more powers.
04:41One of them that we just got earlier was the deflecting shield.
04:47And there are seven abilities in total in the game.
04:51And the tagline of the game is resist or embrace.
04:55So the whole point of Sundered is that you can choose to corrupt
04:58these abilities or not.
05:01And so what's the balance there?
05:02I mean, why corrupt and why not corrupt?
05:05So if you corrupt, you definitely have a more powerful version
05:08of that ability, but it comes at a cost to your humanity
05:13and it has impacts both on gameplay and on the story as well.
05:16Yeah. Okay. Awesome.
05:18We have multiple endings set up for the game and, you know,
05:20different final bosses and a lot of different things.
05:24in perfect fitting with Sundered, the automated lights in our studio
05:28have gone out, making this a much more chilling recording.
05:32But I think this was all part of the plan.
05:34It was fate.
05:35It's for ambience.
05:36Yeah. It really was. Just to set the mood.
05:38Justin, you know what, man?
05:40I'm proud of you so far.
05:42You're doing well.
05:43I would have died already.
05:44These little Scooty McScootersons scooting around.
05:47These are really the only enemies I've seen so far.
05:50so we'll see what happens once in a while.
05:51Yeah. Why don't we jump ahead here?
05:53Okay.
05:54Because this is actually taking a bit longer than I thought.
05:59Okay. So we've skipped ahead a little bit because,
06:01according to Will, we were taking too long.
06:05Will, you've skipped ahead to a little bit more of the
06:08intensely industrial and technology-oriented environment.
06:12And you guys must have had a lot of fun playing with different
06:15tones and themes in this game, didn't you?
06:17Yeah, absolutely.
06:18The whole kind of dichotomy or comparison between the cultists
06:24who are the Eschatons and the Valkyrie who are more tech-based
06:28and to get into more of that sci-fi feel and stuff,
06:30definitely, it's a huge difference.
06:32We actually had some people when they first saw this,
06:34they were like, wait, this isn't the same game at all.
06:37You guys accidentally booted the wrong game.
06:39Yeah, exactly.
06:40And so it's really good to have those different, you know,
06:44those different environments and the different types of
06:46monsters and it happened.
06:51It happened.
06:52But you know what?
06:52That was a lot to ask of a new player.
06:55So I'm going to give Justin the benefit of the doubt on that one.
06:58Absolutely.
06:59And that's the introduction to one of the core gameplay mechanics
07:03in the game, which are the procedurally generated hordes.
07:06So as you go through the level at some point,
07:09you'll hear this kind of dark gong sound.
07:11And that means that a huge horde of enemies is coming up.
07:15And those are the real challenges of the game.
07:18Okay.
07:19So Will graciously cheated us ahead several times just for the sake of time
07:23and also gave us a whole bunch of money to spend on a bunch of upgrades.
07:27So we are looking at the really nice upgrade system and branching path system
07:32that you guys have built in the game where kind of the central point
07:37and then it branches off into the different abilities you unlock.
07:40Exactly.
07:40Whenever you unlock an ability,
07:42it unlocks a whole other set of upgrades that you can go get.
07:45So you definitely want to try and aim for those big nodes at the end.
07:48Those are the more impactful ones.
07:50And that's kind of how you can decide what kind of build you want.
07:55Do you want more health?
07:55Do you want more shield?
07:56Do you want more energy so that you can roll around more?
08:00You know, crit.
08:01You should definitely go into the left there and get crit damage upgrade.
08:05But yeah, completely at the left.
08:08Yeah, the sword there.
08:10Oh, gotcha.
08:11Work your way there, Justin.
08:13Fill up that grid.
08:15And what's really cool is that when you corrupt your abilities.
08:18Oh, no.

08:22So what's really great is that when you corrupt your abilities,
08:25it has impacts on the skill tree.
08:28And if you choose to not corrupt them,
08:30that also has impacts on the skill tree.

08:40That's always the safest place to be is into the deep,
08:44dark abyssal regions of the level.

09:05So yeah, we've picked up a few new abilities since we last spoke.

10:20They've been unused for a few hundred years, so that's kind of what happens.

10:48Usually skull faces are the place you want to go, but basically how our map system works is like each
10:55room kind of has its own thing.

12:03when we launched it, we really wanted to build on what worked
12:07really well with Jotun and to improve on what we felt didn't
12:10work as well.

12:13building on what happened with our previous game.

12:59that you guys do at Thunder Lotus.

13:03I feel like there's a lot of back and forth between both your art
13:06teams and the design team, right?

13:09To kind of make it a symbiotic relationship between what
13:11you're seeing and how you're playing.

13:14And that's one of the advantages of being on like a smaller team
13:17is that you can have...
13:20Usually on a smaller team size communication is a bit easier.
13:23It's less of a challenge when you're 10 people as opposed to
13:26when you're 250.
13:27You don't have to take a cab ride to the other end of the office.

13:31Our designers and our artists work super close, especially...

13:42And now Will is going to take a run at what I have just learned
13:46as one of the first bosses in the game.
13:48I would have thought seeing this guy, he was like the end boss.
13:52That is not the case.
13:55This is boss number one.
13:58Justin, how did you feel going into that with zero knowledge?
14:02Not super confident.
14:04I feel like I had a pretty good run considering my lack of knowledge.
14:10Right.
14:10And this is the first time I'm playing the game.
14:12So, yeah.
14:14But now the creator of the game is going to do it and I'm going to feel
14:18really bad.
14:19Well, here's the thing.
14:21First of all, as you just said, he is one of the creators of the game.
14:25Two, he probably won't talk at all during this and he'll be in focus mode.
14:29I can definitely talk when he goes away.
14:33Oh, just when he goes away.

14:36The easy part.
14:38And number three, during our mini break, he may or may not have given
14:42himself even more upgrades than what you had.
14:45I'm a big fraud.

14:49I'm just saying you're a man who understands his limits.

15:01So the trick is to start with the top shard.
15:04Because it's the hardest one to get to.
15:06And as the fight goes on, the boss gets stronger and stronger
15:10and his attacks become more and more powerful.

15:13These are some pro tips from Thunder Lotus once you get in there
15:19when you're playing Thunderd this summer.
15:21How much of the lore are we going to be exploring during this game
15:25about why he put that mask on and why his face is inside his throne right now?
15:29Yeah.
15:30So this is Dominion, who is one of the head Eschaton priests.
15:35The Eschatons are the crazy cultists who live in this world,
15:38who are trapped basically in this world as you are.
15:42And the lore we're building, there's like a huge backstory to it.
15:46And we definitely want that.
15:49That's definitely going to be in the game.
15:53And there are many different ways in the story that we're kind of
15:57building that story out, like different mechanics to kind of explore that
16:02and to go into that.
16:03So I got to say, I'm getting nervous watching this.
16:07that's stressed out.
16:12But I have confidence.
16:15Cautious.

16:20Well, I did cheat and give myself every single upgrade.
16:23So that definitely helps.
16:26That doesn't make it easy.
16:29Well, actually this game is really a challenge to balance because of the
16:33skill tree and because it really depends on how many times you die
16:37and how much you explore and how many shards you find.
16:43So it's kind of a dynamic difficulty setting that other games have done in
16:47the past too.
16:48But that's really, okay, now it's getting kind of crazy.

16:55Folks, Will was successful, but we didn't want to show you too much
16:57of what happens after that boss is defeated.
