00:34The two Haases are on those X-WETs. Will that work out for them? We'll have to find out.

00:42The race to Turn 1 is moments away.
00:44There's the green flag.
00:46The ninth round of the season begins in five lights time.
00:50And the Canadian Grand Prix is underway.
00:54They crawl off the line with George Russell chopping across Max Verstappen
00:57as they make their way to Turn 1.
00:59The plumes of spray are raised and the top four are in the same position.
01:03Fernando Alonso gets past Daniel Ricciardo to the apex of Turn 2.
01:07A huge amount of standing water on the racetrack as they squeeze the throttle.

01:14The top four in the order that they left the line.
01:17We've got drama behind momentarily with the yellow flag.
01:20They're now beginning to feel out the conditions here in Montreal.

01:29And the difficulty right now is just immense.
01:31Piastri into Turn 6 still ahead of Fernando Alonso who made the game.

01:38So Ricciardo, great qualifying yesterday.
01:40He's dropped back a couple of positions and Leclerc's up in the top ten.
01:44The cars are squirming all over the road.
01:46Magnussen on the full wet tyre just went around the outside of Alexander Albon.
01:51He's up to 11th place.
01:52That full wet working at the moment because it is really, really wet out there.
01:57And the drivers are struggling to apply the power.
02:00Well, Magnussen's the driver to make the most of it on an opening lap.
02:04He's always so aggressive and in the back of the shot.
02:06You can see him having a look on the Ferrari as well.
02:09Oh, and deep into the corner goes the Ferrari.
02:11And that looks like Charles Leclerc losing a position as Magnussen has gone up the order here.
02:16It's working for him at this stage.
02:18He's up five places from where he started the Grand Prix on that full wet tyre.
02:22So it looks genius right now, the full wet, but he's got to take it a long way.
02:26And again, he's side by side with Stroll for the top eight now.

04:30And now he's staring at the guys fighting for a podium just in front of him.

04:38Hülkenberg has passed Leclerc.
04:39So he's ahead of both Ferraris now as well.

05:02He's in ninth at the moment.

05:07And it's great fun for Magnussen who's got more grip than anyone around him.
05:11Now on the tail of Oscar Piastri who can't turn that McLaren.
05:14And K-Mag just squeezes on the throttle.
05:16And he's going to be with the McLaren in fourth position.
05:19He's round the McLaren in fourth position on the exit.
05:22Kevin Magnussen having the time of his life.
05:25From 14th on the grid on the extreme wet tyre.
05:28He has moved up to fourth position.
05:30And there's nothing that any of them are going to be able to do.
05:33He is passing for fun in Montreal.
05:38People on Inter's now going faster than people on X-Lex.
05:42That is beginning to switch.
05:44Max Verstappen did a 1.33.8 last time around.
05:47Kevin Magnussen did a 1.34.5.
05:49And you can see the track conditions with the graphic on the right-hand side.
05:53Now it's becoming an intermediate track.
05:56We had a lot of fun with Kevin Magnussen.
05:58But now Haas have conceded that it's time.
06:01Oh, it's slow.
06:02It's so slow.
06:03And after all of that overtaking, it's a slow stop for Kevin Magnussen who sees all of that hard work
06:08undone.
06:09Oh, no.
06:10The strategy actually was still relatively with them.
06:13Because an intermediate tyre now that he could put on.
06:16He should have come out roughly still in the midfield melee.
06:18It wasn't a disaster.
06:19But the pit stop was.
06:21And all of that hard work is over for Kevin Magnussen.
06:23He's still in the race.
06:24You can see he's exiting in 12th position still.
06:26He could have been in the top 10, bolting on a new set of Inters.
06:30So Hülkenberg now taking the punishment for that early gain by going on the full wet.
06:35They can only be hoping to take this through to a slick now.
06:37But he's got a long way to go.
06:39Expecting a short rain sail duration.
06:42Five minutes in around 15 laps.
06:45There is 9 tenths of a second for the lead of the race.
06:47But you are focusing on Daniel Ricciardo getting out of the slipstream and getting up to 7th position.

09:48There's now an opportunity for the likes of Verstappen, Russell and Piastri to dive in.
09:53Surely this is now a new intermediate territory.

10:04Russell is released very quickly.

10:06But they just cover off the Mercedes and they will leave the pits in the same order that they entered.

10:14Is Norris sitting behind a safety car or is he just running to a lap time delta?
10:20And the driver who had disappeared from Verstappen and Russell and Piastri now comes into the pits as Verstappen, Russell

10:28So this is going to be close then because Norris has lost a load of time behind the safety car.
10:32There you can see Verstappen.
10:33Max Verstappen is going to retake the lead.
10:36There's that line.
10:37They were racing to that point.
10:38McLaren versus McLaren.
10:39Lando Norris is P3.
10:41Lando Norris got to that line behind Verstappen, behind Russell, but crucially ahead of Oscar Piastri.
10:47And that is how they decide things under the safety car.

10:57Charles Leclerc has risked the hard tyres.
10:59He's hoping for something truly extraordinary.
11:02The rain is closing in nearby and Verstappen has aced the restart.

11:12And he is fighting his way past the RB.
11:17And that is dramatic stuff.
11:20To get up to ninth, he got past Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon.

11:29Pierre Gasly looks like he's coming into the pits.
11:32A new tyre and it's a slick tyre.
11:34That is going to cause a huge amount of reaction.

11:38Everyone will be looking at Gasly's sector times as the French driver leaves the pits.
11:45Fastest lap of the Grand Prix now belonging to George Russell.
11:48So, Gasly's become a guinea pig at the moment.
11:51Oh, off the road you go with Lando Norris.
11:53And he went deep into turn number one.
11:56How he's done that and stayed ahead.
11:58He will be, his hobby will be going a mile a minute.
12:02Lewis Hamilton from fifth place.
12:05Well, we've seen Gasly come in and take the slick tyres along with Valtteri Bottas and Kevin Magnussen.
12:11But a contender at the front of the field is surely going to the slick tyres on the racetrack.
12:17Lando Norris has done the fastest lap of the Grand Prix as Hamilton pits for slicks.
12:21The last three cars on intermediate tyres are the first three cars in the Grand Prix.
12:27It's going to be a pit stop race.
12:28In comes Verstappen, in comes Russell.
12:30No, Norris stays out.
12:31Big decision there for McLaren.
12:33Hamilton does the fastest middle sector of the race.
12:35He was one second quicker than Verstappen in the middle sector as Verstappen had an in lap.
12:40That looks slow for George Russell as he rejoins and Red Bull cover off the move.
12:44You can still see it's really slippy at this part of the circuit.
12:49Norris has been firing this car around the 14 turns of Montreal.
12:53Has he built himself a gap as he comes into the pits?
12:56So you lose 18 seconds.
12:58You've got the pit stop as well.
13:00Remember, tyre temperature will be an issue.

13:06You've got a slightly wet pit exit.
13:08But you've got Verstappen going through turn number one.
13:11And Lando Norris is going to be standing on the power in the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix for

13:16But the tyres aren't up to temperature and it was worth the gamble.
13:20But Verstappen retakes first place in the race.

15:43And Max Verstappen is waiting to the last chicane on this circuit.

16:46but just couldn't quite complete the move.

16:53And he's just about clung on to third place.
