00:00All of the cars except the Haas are on the Inters.
00:03The two Haases are on those ex-wets.
00:05Will that work out for them? We'll have to find out.
00:07The ninth round of the season begins in five lights time.
00:12And the Canadian Grand Prix is underway.
00:15They crawl off the line with George Russell chopping across Max Verstappen
00:18as they make their way to turn number one.
00:20The plumes of spray are raised and the top four are in the same position.
00:25Fernando Alonso gets past Daniel Ricciardo to the apex of turn two.
00:28A huge amount of standing water on the racetrack as they squeeze the throttle.
00:34Further back we go and you can see Sergio Perez close there with Gasly.
00:39Slightly sliding, Gasly coming across him a little bit.
00:43All trying to find a bit of space on a narrow circuit.
00:47Magnussen is going all the way to the front of the field as it stands.
00:51He's passing people for fun and he's up seven places from where he started.
00:55Both of them making good gains. Seven places for Magnussen.
00:58Five for Hülkenberg.
01:00Ocon flinging the car through. The grip level's just so low.
01:04Magnussen's past Hamilton.
01:05Magnussen gets another one. He is having the time of his life.
01:10So this level of rain is the worst we expect.
01:14We go on board with a man on a mission.
01:17Denmark's Kevin Magnussen about to take P5 when he stands on the brakes.
01:22He's in another league right now on that full wet tire.
01:27Great fun for Magnussen who's got more grip than anyone around him.
01:31Now on the tail of Oscar Piastri who can't turn that McLaren and K-Mag just squeezes on the throttle.
01:36And he's going to be with the McLaren in fourth position.
01:39He's round the McLaren in fourth position on the exit.
01:42We had a lot of fun with Kevin Magnussen.
01:45But now Haas have conceded that it's time.
01:48Oh, it's slow. It's so slow.
01:49And after all of that overtaking, it's a slow stop for Kevin Magnussen who sees all of that hard work
01:55undone.
01:56Can Norris line up for the overtake?
01:59Here's the opportunity for Lando Norris who started in third, trying to claim second place.
02:03How powerful is the DRS? There's your answer.
02:06Lando Norris gets past Max Verstappen and takes second place in the Grand Prix.
02:13This is an opportunity. Russell's not had to defend from the DRS yet.
02:16This is the battle for the lead.
02:18Norris moving past, under braking and going through.
02:23George Russell is over the chicane, but he's in second place now.
02:27It might be about to come third position because he's lost the lead.
02:30Verstappen's gone by and Lando Norris leads the Canadian Grand Prix.
02:36Piastri in the same car now is going to find the issue that Lewis Hamilton is finding.
02:40Oh, car off the road and into the barrier.
02:43Logan Sargent with damage to the Williams.
02:45The safety car is deployed and there is Logan Sargent.
02:50Verstappen, Russell and Piastri, second, third and fourth, come into the pits.
02:55Red Bull's pit crew normally so good. Russell is released very quickly.
02:59Oh, it's tight, but they just cover off the Mercedes and they will leave the pits in the same order
03:04that they entered.
03:06And the driver who had disappeared from Verstappen and Russell and Piastri now comes into the pits as Verstappen, Russell
03:13and Piastri go past.
03:14So this is going to be close then because Norris has lost a load of time behind the safety car.
03:18There you can see Verstappen.
03:19Max Verstappen is going to retake the lead. There's that line.
03:23They were racing to that point. McLaren versus McLaren. Lando Norris is P3.
03:28We have most of the cars, all of the cars on intermediate.
03:31Charles Leclerc has risked the hard tyres.
03:32He's hoping for something truly extraordinary.
03:35The rain is closing in nearby and Verstappen has aced the restart.
03:41Let's look at the overtakes further back. One Williams still left in the Grand Prix is Alex Albon.
03:46And he is fighting his way past the RB, fighting his way past the Alpine.
03:51And that is dramatic stuff to get up to ninth.
03:54He got past Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon.
03:57One of the great moves. Brilliant stuff.
04:02The last three cars on intermediate tyres are the first three cars in the Grand Prix.
04:07It's going to be a pit stop race. In comes Verstappen. In comes Russell. No, Norris stays out.
04:11Big decision there for McLaren. Hamilton does the fastest middle sector of the race.
04:15He was one second quicker than Verstappen in the middle sector as Verstappen had an in lap.
04:20That looks slow for George Russell as he rejoins and Red Bull cover off the move.
04:25You can still see it's really slippy at this part of the circuit.
04:29Norris has been firing this car around the 14 turns of Montreal.
04:33Has he built himself a gap as he comes into the pits? So you lose 18 seconds.
04:39You've got the pit stop as well. Remember, tyre temperature will be an issue.
04:42Lando Norris on the right. Max Verstappen on the left-hand side of your picture.
04:46You've got a slightly wet pit exit, but you've got Verstappen going through turn number one.
04:51And Lando Norris is going to be standing on the power in the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix for
04:56a second.
04:57But the tyres aren't up to temperature and it was worth the gamble. But Verstappen retakes first place in the
05:03race.
05:05Okay, Lando Norris. There's the lock-up. Does that open it for George Russell?
05:08Nothing between the two British drivers. Lando Norris under serious pressure now.
05:13He jumped Russell with the pit stop. An inventive strategy for McLaren, but there's nothing between the two of them.
05:18It's drying all the time. The error into the hairpin. Opens the door for George Russell to take second place
05:25in the Grand Prix.
05:27Oh, Russell's gone in deep, has he? Yes, he has. Does he open the door? Lando Norris is off the
05:32racing line, but he's back into second place.
05:34Russell goes off the road. Lando goes off the racing line and they're scrambling over the road for second place.
05:41It swaps again.
05:42Yeah, clambering over the curbs. Then it got damp on the exit and that's when Norris came through fighting the
05:47car.
05:48Perez has brought out the yellow flag. He went deep. He did continue. And the rear wing has taken a
05:54battering.
05:55Oh, off the road goes Carlos Sainz. And he is rejoining. Alex Albon involved in that. He's just to the
06:02right-hand side, I believe.
06:04Do we have here, once again, it's a safety car out on the circuit.
06:09So this is going to be, first of all, Sergio Perez got deep, got wide onto the wet part of
06:14the circuit, spinning to the wall.
06:15So Sainz, oh, Sainz has his own moment. Oh, it's, oh, gutting for Albon.
06:20So unlucky.
06:23George Russell comes into the pits. He brings his teammate as well. A new set of slick tyres.
06:28The green flag flies at the circuit, Gilles Villeneuve. We go racing all the way to the end now.
06:34That is perfectly timed for the three-time world champion. And so we're looking at the battle with the second
06:40McLaren.
06:41The man from Melbourne staying ahead. But for how much longer? Russell trying to power around the outside.
06:46They're close to contact. They're nearly banging wheels into the corner. Russell rejoins.
06:51Piastri stays ahead. P3. And Lewis Hamilton's roaring by as well. Up to fourth place.
06:58Meanwhile, in the battle for the podium places, Lewis Hamilton has the DRS. And that Mercedes does get ahead before
07:04the braking zone.
07:06Can Russell get by this time around? That's his aim. That's what he's done. Russell gets passed. Up to fourth
07:12position.
07:14Let's see what happened to you, Geek.
07:15Chasing down Estevan Ocon. But he went off the road at Turn 8. Put it flat to the floor. Spins
07:20the car. Is narrowly avoided by those behind.
07:26Russell versus Hamilton. The two Silveraros heading to the final chicane.
07:30We are racing. Just remember. It goes without saying. Keep it clean, please.
07:34He had the warning, but he got the place.
07:37For the 60th time in Formula 1. Max Verstappen takes the win. Red Bull back on top.
07:44Max Verstappen wins the Canadian Grand Prix. Lando Norris is second.
07:49And it's George Russell across the line to complete the podium.
07:52After his worst result of the season when he saw the chequered flag in Monaco, he has returned to the
07:58top step in Montreal.
