00:00Formula One returns, welcome to the second part of the season and it could be a historic homecoming for the
00:07World Championship leader.
00:09Only once before in the entire history of the sport has a driver won nine Grand Prix in a row.
00:15Over to you, Max Verstappen.
00:1972 laps ahead, green flag at the back, here come the lights for the Dutch Grand Prix.
00:24And we go racing in Zandvoort with a good reaction time for both of the drivers on the front row.
00:30Is Lando Norris thinking about George Russell? Verstappen holds the lead, will they all slow it down with the rain
00:35falling?
00:35Verstappen, then Norris, it's close between the two friends of Alex Albon and George Russell, but Russell hangs on to
00:41third position.
00:42The two Spaniards of Alonso and Sainz were close, but they make it through. That's opportunistic stuff to the inside.
00:47What a great move from Fernando Alonso as the rain comes down. It's all about the feel, it's all about
00:52the grip.
00:52Alonso is up to third position using all of that mastery as the rain begins to fall for Verstappen, then
00:59Norris, then Alonso.
01:00Brilliant stuff from Alonso then. He's the big winner there, plus two places, and Sainz is going past Albon.
01:05Can he make it stick? That would be audacious. And it is a super move for Sainz on the opening
01:11lap.
01:11Sainz coming back, Albon back down the inside. I am amazed we've not seen any contact on this opening lap.
01:17They've been side by side, sometimes three of rest.
01:19And that is Sainz trying to hang on now with Perez. And look, they're weaving, trying to generate tyre temperature.
01:26And this is so tough for the drivers that they come in. It's hammering down. It's hammering down on the
01:30main street.
01:31It is all about keeping your tyres warm and on the racetrack at this stage. This is nearly impossible.
01:37They have to go to the pits. They will lose so much time. They will lose so much time on
01:42these thick tyres. Who doesn't go in?
01:44Now you've got a pit now. It is chucking it down. You can see them all sliding around. The tyres
01:49aren't even fully up to temperature.
01:50The Williams of Albon, they're sideways. Is anyone going to pit? Are they going to stay out and brave it?
01:55The spray is being lifted by the Formula One cars onto lap two. Verstappen, Norris and Alonso. This is such
02:02strange territory for them.
02:04Now, Perez comes in to go to the intermediate tyres. The others are out there plainly on the wrong tyres
02:10for the conditions.
02:11100%. That is brave stuff. Those that have stayed out. And look, see the issue of releasing cars because of
02:16this pit lane being so tight.
02:18This is going to be such a difficult lap on a set of slicks.
02:21The standard of driving on that opening lap was phenomenal. All racing together. There were a few lockups.
02:25For second place, Fernando Alonso is going past. Fernando Alonso has turned fifth position.
02:30And he is tiptoeing through the rain using all of the experience of his starts in Formula One.
02:36The two-time champion is up to second.
02:39Someone's going to bend it. Surely. I know you're saying you're amazed at the driving standards.
02:44We should remind ourselves these are the best drivers in the world.
02:46But in these conditions to try and explain to the people at home how difficult it is to keep the
02:52car on the road when the tyres lose temperature.
02:54You can live with it. Stay out.
02:56You need to tell me the radar.
02:57Yeah. I think we'll be at this lad, Max.
03:02They've changed their mind, Julian.
03:03Well, there's nothing like hearing the wheel guns in the background, is there?
03:06Someone else has taken the gamble. Max is leading. It's still raining out there.
03:10Look at the spray. And they're on slicks. Alonso is so comfortable in these conditions.
03:15He's up in a second. He started fifth. And now he's hunting down the race leader.
03:18He'll be leading by the time he gets to Tarzan. There's a prediction for you.
03:22Let's find out. We've only got a couple of corners to go.
03:25Remember, the 14th and final corner on this racetrack is a banked turn.
03:29It is so difficult to apply the power in these conditions.
03:32Who comes in? Who is able to come in? Who continues round?
03:38Okay, Lando. Rain is easy enough. Can you keep the car on track?
03:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:44In comes Max Verstappen. In comes Fernando Alonso.
03:47Lando Norris leads the Dutch Grand Prix. But for how much longer?
03:51Because here comes George Russell to the inside.
03:54Russell close to taking the lead. And he's done it!
03:57What was that? It looked like he breaked 200 meters earlier than Russell.
04:00He was cautious, Norris. He'd just seen the two cars ahead of him dive into the pits.
04:04I think he probably thought they were all going to stay out and brave it.
04:06Verstappen has pitted. Where is Sergio Perez? He's ahead, isn't he?
04:11He is. He is absolutely ahead. Perez went early to the intermediate tyre.
04:15Perez is in fifth position at the moment. Russell got past Norris at the first turn.
04:21Perez is now past Oscar Piastri's P4.
04:25Yeah, we should have come in, man. This is very wet.
04:28Copy Lewis. So we're going to stay out. We're going to have to brave this, I think.
04:31Perez is in another league right now. He's got the right tyres on and he's picking them off at will.
04:35He's a couple of meters away from the Grand Prix lead and Sergio Perez manages to time the conditions to
04:42perfection.
04:43Seventh on the grid to the lead of the Dutch Grand Prix.
04:47Off goes Charles Leclerc. He keeps it going, but he dips a couple of intermediate tyres into the gravel trap.
04:53It's Perez who has the lead. Then it's Russell. Then it's Norris. Joe is up to fourth.
04:57It will be second place before long. Max Verstappen looking for a way by.
05:01He's currently in sixth position, trying to overtake Gasly. This is unbelievable Formula One.
05:06It's all about the tyres. It's all about the instinct. This track does dry quickly.
05:11Those on slicks need to see that right now. As we see further back, Fernando Alonso trying to get on
05:17terms with Charles Leclerc.
05:18That is in the battle for seventh. Norris pits there. Norris pits off the slick tyres.
05:23Led the race for a brief moment. This time last lap.
05:26Russell lost 20 seconds to Perez on that lap. So his pit stop window is just going to go as
05:32well.
05:32This has not worked for anyone staying on the slicks.
05:36This is live pitches. It is lap six of 72. And so much more grip for Max Verstappen.
05:43But unless you get the move done into turn three, you're going to have to do something inventive.
05:47And he's thinking about it. But that is close to contact.
05:50Gasly is forced to take the high line and Verstappen takes third position.
05:57Alonso with his nose to the inside of Charles Leclerc. Alonso back to where he started.
06:02After all that magnificent driving, he's back in fifth position.
06:06Sergio Perez leads. He's up six places.
06:08Joe Guanyu is up 13 places from where he started. Verstappen now in third.
06:15That Alonso move on Leclerc was nice though, wasn't it?
06:17He's still on the Inters. He's looking good. And that was against the Ferrari on Inters.
06:21No DRS. Just sent it in. And he's looking really hooked up.
06:24Up into fifth place. Up behind Gasly now. And he's still hunting for a podium today.
06:28Oh, this could be special. He loves turn three. Once again, Max Verstappen carves his way by.
06:34And it is a Red Bull 1-2 now. But there are ten seconds between Perez, who took Intermediate at
06:39the start of the race,
06:40and Verstappen, who stayed out there for another tour.
06:44Okay, six seconds now. Verstappen is absolutely scything into the advantage of his teammate that was at 1.12 seconds.
06:51It's now 5.8. The Ferraris are lining Stern in sixth and seventh after the most dramatic Grand Prix start
06:58of the season so far.
06:59That's them swapping round.
07:00I can only imagine Perez has left the handbrake on after he did the start,
07:03because I can't believe the amount of time that Verstappen is taking out of him.
07:08Joe comes in, looking for his third point score of the season. DRS has been enabled now.
07:13Alonso came in to get rid of the Inter tyre as well.
07:16And Alpine have to run another lap on that Intermediate rubber.
07:19I'm surprised Gasly didn't come in. The slicks are definitely better.
07:23Piastri's fastest lap there was four seconds quicker than Verstappen on the slick tyre.
07:26So maybe they're thinking this rain is going to come down again.
07:29And they don't want to avoid doing two more pistols on the gambles on the pitwall today.
07:33We're only 11 laps into the race.
07:34I know, it's incredible, isn't it?
07:35You'll lose less time in this sort of couple of laps window,
07:39being on the Inter when others are in slicks.
07:42But within, you know, within two, three laps,
07:43if you're out there gambling on the rain coming,
07:45you're just going to lose chunks of time.
07:47Was that Alonso? Was that Alonso getting past Joe? It was!
07:50And Alonso takes the position immediately.
07:54This was Alonso on the soft tyre against Joe on the medium.
07:58And if you give Fernando Alonso a car's width, he is going to find his way by.
08:03This is into turn three, and that is...
08:06Oh, he wristed it on a slightly wet part of track.
08:08Through he goes.
08:11In comes the man chasing Grand Prix victory number nine in a row.
08:16Now with slick tyres attached to the car, it's the narrowest pit lane of the year.
08:20Even more so, really, than the Monaco.
08:23You go over, you dip down onto the concrete apron from the fast lane to the slow lane.
08:28That lap, we're going to get an illustration of how much it's cost Gasly.
08:32And they would have told Joe to come in.
08:34And Alonso is going past Pierre Gasly to take that position for what would be a return to the podium.
08:41It's another slow stop for Ferrari.
08:44They're on board with Charles Leclerc.
08:46This is earlier on. That's how he got the front wing damage, DC.
08:49Yeah, banging wheels along with the McLaren, and that was a little bit unfortunate.
08:53And actually, a lot of these front wings have been able to take quite a bit of impact,
08:57but it's just taken the end plate off.
08:59And you'll see on the load sensors just how much aerodynamic performance he's lost in that car.
09:05And it was another lap round for Sergio Perez.
09:0921 seconds, you can see the lost time if it goes absolutely to plan.
09:12But even with a brilliant stop, this is surely going to be another change of the lead in the Dutch
09:17Grand Prix.
09:18Yeah, so the Dutchman will lead again.
09:19There we go, picture in picture.
09:21Verstappen's going to blast past and back into the lead.
09:24Perez should rejoin ahead of Fernando Alonso, you can see in the top of the screen.
09:27But he'll have to get those tyres fired up pretty quickly as well.
09:30Crawling out of the pit lane, hugging the inside there.
09:33Did Max undercut us?
09:35Yes, Max undercut us.
09:36They put Joe Guanyu on the medium tyre.
09:39Carlos Sainz has just got past him for fifth.
09:43Kevin Magnusson, who went to the slick tyres first in this batch of stops, up to seventh now.
09:49If you time it correctly today, there are points available.
09:52It's going to be very, very tight there into the braking zone.
09:55Ocon going wheel to wheel and being elbowed out of the way.
09:59Tsunoda in ninth place. Ocon in tenth.
10:02We're on board with Alexander Albon in eleventh.
10:06That was a very tight moment between Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon.
10:11Tsunoda has been cleared by Ocon and Albon now.
10:15And Logan Sargent has found the wall once again in this Dutch Grand Prix weekend.
10:20That will be a full safety. I don't see any crane there.
10:23You okay? You okay?
10:25No, I crashed. I don't know what happened, man.
10:28Something fell on the front right when I hit the kerb.
10:32It did look like something failed or the kerb is extremely slippery and just skipped him on towards the barriers.
10:39And it's flat to the floor from here through the fourteenth corner.
10:43The banked one to take us back to Green Flag Racing.
10:45Look at that already, Max. You can see how he's opened out the gap.
10:48But look at Alonso in the slipstream of Checo Perez.
10:52Alonso's going to have a chance.
10:54Oh, and Perez knew it defended.
10:56Sainz looking for the opportunity on Gasly.
10:58Sainz is going to be close on the exit of this corner.
11:01But Pia Gasly got that five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
11:08Darker cards coming in.
11:10That's it. Thank you.
11:12That's a late lunch from Yuki Tsunoda, who's able to take the place on Joe Guan Yu.
11:17And that is for eighth position.
11:19Time for another overtake by the looks of things.
11:22Even though Joe Guan Yu has the DRS, Lando Norris has an updated McLaren.
11:26He sweeps around the outside to take the place away from the Chinese driver.
11:30It's ninth position for Lando Norris.
11:32As Max Verstappen sets the fastest first sector of the race so far.
11:36The gap is approaching four seconds at the head of the field.
11:38Then three seconds between Perez and Alonso.
11:43And we've got Joe Guan Yu now seeing Lewis Hamilton claim the position in a few moments' time.
11:48You would suspect Joe Guan Yu on that medium compound of tyre.
11:52And he's in a sea of soft compounds.
11:54Lewis Hamilton is another driver running them as well.
11:56And look at this. Look at the speed as he builds up to 200 miles per hour.
12:01And takes his place back in the points.
12:04That was the minimum he was expecting today.
12:06P10 for Hamilton.
12:08Lawson on reserve driver duties.
12:10Had one practice session, one hour of qualifying.
12:13But he didn't get the full hour because he only had 18 minutes before he was eliminated.
12:17And it will have been an eye-opening experience.
12:20Yeah, that is a very good point.
12:22But he is active as he goes for the pass into the chicane.
12:25Yeah, not much resistance from that wounded Ferrari.
12:29So the situation is getting worse, so we retire the car.
12:33That was always coming.
12:34Charles Leclerc retires from the Dutch Grand Prix.
12:37And that is his first retirement since Australia, the third race of the year.
12:43Front left is an issue.
12:45Oh no, it's a slow stop.
12:46And that is really tough stuff for Alonso, whose chance of putting pressure on Perez disappears.
12:52And Carlos Sainz goes through.
12:55The Spanish driver Carlos Sainz, who hasn't been on the podium all season long, goes through.
13:00And so does Tsunoda as the podium chances disappear for Fernando Alonso.
13:06Let's do battle with Ferrari and Aston Martin, with Carlos Sainz hanging on to third place at the moment.
13:11But Alonso wants it back and he's prepared to go aggressively to the inside.
13:15And he'll reclaim the place.
13:18Fernando Alonso forgets all about that difficult pit stop and roars on by to P3.
13:25And Hamilton and Norris now trying to get past Tsunoda.
13:28There goes Norris and Hamilton's going to have to wait.
13:31But will he have better traction?
13:33Go the long way round.
13:34And he will.
13:35So Tsunoda's gamble doesn't pay off with the AlphaTauri team.
13:39Norris is up to ninth.
13:40P10 for Lewis Hamilton.
13:43Russell versus Albon.
13:45This is for sixth position.
13:46Or it was because Albon has just driven around the side of his good friend and taken sixth place.
13:53Alex Albon on for his best day in Formula One so far this season.
13:57He is resurgent in that Williams.
13:59Hamilton has cleared Norris as well for ninth place.
14:02So he made that pass around the outside of Tsunoda.
14:05Had to do it first time.
14:06And here we go.
14:08That is going to be Ocon being passed by Lewis Hamilton who then has his teammate directly ahead.
14:14That was down to Tarzan corner.
14:17So this rain is two minutes away.
14:20Duration is about 50 minutes.
14:22Any second now we're expecting the Dutch Grand Prix to turn into a wet contest once again.
14:27There's no need for anything to turn into a battle between Hamilton and Russell here.
14:32Old hard tires.
14:33Oh, he put a wheel on the grass.
14:35And we all took a step back in the commentary box.
14:37And I can't believe that George Russell is still in the Dutch Grand Prix.
14:40Save of the century.
14:41How did he keep that?
14:44Wow, that was huge.
14:46That could have been an almighty crash.
14:49That would have been straight into the gravel, into the Tech Pro.
14:52And racing drivers instincts keep him in the race.
14:55I mean, Hamilton had quite the view there, didn't he?
14:57Coming into the fastest corner of the circuit.
14:59Now he goes around his teammate and up into seventh.
15:01This is a much better run for Pierre Gasly this time.
15:04It's a position improved for Pierre Gasly.
15:07Another driver to forget about the slow pit stop.
15:10That was for a penalty there for the Alpine driver.
15:13And he gets past Carlos Sainz.
15:15And despite all of this, they're going to have to deal with the rain,
15:18which all the teams believe is coming.
15:19Looks like it's just about to hit the beach.
15:23This would be a very good time to pit.
15:25Okay.
15:26Okay, changing it. Here comes the rain.
15:28This is an opportunity and the rain is bucketing down.
15:31Well, this is going to change it.
15:32It's all about keeping it on the road once again for the drivers.
15:36This is going to be tough even on the intermediate tyre
15:38that they surely will all elect to change onto.
15:41Very good stop for Verstappen.
15:43Look how much the rain is coming down.
15:45Verstappen continues on there.
15:47He's made it out.
15:48He's going to maintain the lead.
15:50Alonso's coming to the pits as well.
15:53They're side by side in really wet conditions
15:56where you are completely committed.
15:58It's usually flat in the drive.
16:00George Russell goes through a corner that he very nearly went off at a few moments ago.
16:04Alvin down to ninth.
16:06Piastri completes the point scorers.
16:08Yellow flag in sector one.
16:09And off the road goes Sergio Perez in the monsoon conditions now.
16:14Surely it can't be long until we throw a safety car at this one
16:17because they'll be struggling to keep it on the road.
16:20They'll be aqua planing off.
16:21Alonso is up to second place.
16:24He's just double front locked as he's hit the brakes.
16:26That was something we saw a lot in the rain yesterday.
16:29And the barrier, but just the lightest of touches.
16:32Let's go back to live.
16:33Oh, they're snaking off the road.
16:35Joe Guan Yu has gone into the Tech Pro.
16:37His teammate has gone off and the virtual safety car is out.
16:41As we go into the pits to change onto full wet tires.
16:45In we come with Max Verstappen.
16:46Full wet tires.
16:47Joe is okay, I'm hearing.
16:49He's gone off.
16:50He's reported he's all right.
16:51But we are heading into red flag territory now.
16:54There is Joe Guan Yu who was reported on the radio.
16:57He is all right.
16:58And we eventually get to the red flag.
17:01But after Perez has given up track position.
17:04It will go back a lap for Perez.
17:06So he will go back to third place, I believe.
17:09Oh, that was a big hit for Joe Guan Yu.
17:11It was aqua plane territory for Joe.
17:13And actually his teammate went off just behind.
17:18Max Verstappen takes us back to green flag racing conditions.
17:23And Fernando Alonso will try and stay with.
17:25The Dutch driver out front.
17:27What a spectacle we have been treated to.
17:29As the green flag flies once again at Zandvoort.
17:32It's Verstappen, then Alonso, then Perez into turn one.
17:35Alonso trying to fire up those intermediate tires.
17:38Quickly trying to give himself a chance.
17:40The six tenths of a second between the top two as they reach turn two.
17:44I think it was as good a restart as Alonso could have hoped for in the conditions.
17:48So no pressure from behind as yet.
17:51Everyone else making their way around.
17:53Anyone taking that inside line for a pass.
17:55Russell thinking about the move on Lando Norris.
17:57Fernando Alonso had a big twitch going into turn three.
18:01It cost him so much time through this series.
18:04And Russell just drove straight past Lando Norris there.
18:07And up to seventh place.
18:10Perez currently has 3.6, 3.8 seconds over Gasly.
18:15He'll need five.
18:16He's got a penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
18:20Norris has been passed by Russell.
18:22He's trying to come back through at turn ten.
18:24Russell did that great move on the exit of three.
18:26They're side by side into turn eleven.
18:28There's a right-hander coming up.
18:29And as we go into turn eleven.
18:32There's the contact between the pair of them.
18:34And it was only minor, but it put Russell out.
18:36Yeah, that's a nothing.
18:37That's a...
18:38Just racing.
18:41Here is the home hero.
18:43You can hear the crowd cheering him home.
18:45And this is a moment of Formula One magic for Max Verstappen.
18:51Who is going to claim another home victory.
18:54A third in a row.
18:56Verstappen is the history maker in Holland.
18:59Verstappen crosses the line to win nine Grand Prix in a row.
19:03And tie the all-time record.
19:06Superb stuff to bring the crowd to their feet.
19:10Alonso is second for his return to the podium.
19:13His first since Canada.
19:15Perez crossed the line in third.
19:16But it's Pierre Gasly who takes the chequered flag wave by Martin Garrix.
19:22And Gasly gets his first podium since 2021.
19:26Alonso, his seventh podium of the season.
19:28But nine Grand Prix in a row has only been done once before until now.
19:34Sebastian Vettel has company.
19:37Max Verstappen ties the all-time record.
19:40What a Dutch Grand Prix to remember.
19:44Incredible.
19:45And also today they didn't make it easy for us I think with the weather.
19:49To make all the time the right calls.
19:51But yeah, incredibly proud.
19:53I mean I already had goosebumps when they were playing the national anthem before the start.
19:56And even with all the bad weather, the rain, the fans are still going at it.
20:01So an incredible atmosphere.
20:04Anything you can come up with.
20:06However odd, Max Verstappen has an answer to it.
20:09And at his home race, he's topped the pile once again.
20:13Playing it very well.
20:13We're notถ을 Hamburg, we're not always heading off to their flying
20:13home race too long again.
20:14Coming out first and wearing cross.
20:14Amen 10 years old.
20:14Amen.
