00:00In two of the last three races, Charles Leclerc has retired from the lead of the race
00:05and it has been power unit problems that have caused those DNFs.
00:08As a result, he takes a brand new power unit for this race
00:12and will start at the back of the grid.
00:14Yuki Tsunoda is another to take extra elements.
00:17He will start at the back to...
00:20...Fantalonians 16th.
00:21Behind comes the Alpine, Fernando Alonso,
00:25almost hitting the Wall of Champions as he slid his way out of the final corner,
00:30goes second fastest.
00:31Pierre Gasly crosses the line and he's not out of the bottom five either
00:35and he has taken the chequered flag.
00:38Daniel Ricciardo goes eighth fastest, puts himself out of trouble.
00:41So Vettel will get another lap.
00:44He crossed the line before the flag dropped and what an important lap.
00:48We thought he'd be fighting over the top few places after free practice this morning.
00:52The pace so far has disappeared for Aston Martin sadly
00:56and this qualifying session has ended for Pierre Gasly
00:59who crossed the line with the chequered flag flying and he is out of qualifying.
01:03Meanwhile, Nicolas Latifi is fighting that Williams all the way down the main straight
01:07to try and get himself out of the bottom five for the first time this year
01:10and sadly at his home race Nicolas Latifi can't get out of the bottom five again.
01:16That's massive disappointment for him.
01:18Meanwhile, Leclerc, Albon, Saitseville all been noted by the stewards for driving unnecessarily slowly.
01:26I don't know how you can do that in these conditions.
01:28How slow is slow quite frankly?
01:30As we look to see Sebastian Vettel not improving his times necessarily on his latest lap
01:36and also Lance Stroll setting not the best first sector either
01:40but he's taken the, he's taken the chequered flag.
01:43He is definitely out of qualifying.
01:44So it's Vettel really the only one that can do something to improve his position
01:48and get out of the bottom five.
01:50This is going to be a hugely disappointing qualifying for Aston Martin if he can't.
01:54Vettel crosses the line. No good.
01:59Okay mate, check the flag. I'm sorry but we are out.
02:02Oh f***.
02:04That can't be. I mean what was that?
02:07So different to this morning. So different. I had no grip.
02:12It felt like the rear left was broken man.
02:15Oh man!
02:17Vettel and Stroll both out.
02:19Along with Tsunoda and Gasly and Latifi.
02:23Alex Albon has crashed out of it.
02:26That is the state of the Williams up against the barriers.
02:33So he's locked the right front then both fronts and actually no harm done.
02:39They kept it going.
02:40Oh and that is Sergio Perez and he's gone into the TechPro barrier a little bit harder.
02:46What happened to Sergio Perez?
02:48It's like we say, it gets tricky.
02:50You go onto the intermediate tyres and the grip that was there now isn't.
02:53And that is a fair clonk into the TechPro barrier.
02:57Yeah, so he's locked on the way in and smartly realised he's got to straighten the car up just at
03:02the last moment.
03:03He is out of this qualifying session Sergio Perez.
03:07We've got the red flag.
03:08Perez isn't going to go any further in this session.
03:11He'll be starting 15th in this race.
03:14Norris is out of qualifying.
03:17So that's Leclerc, Norris, Perez all out of this qualifying session.
03:22Albon and Hamilton currently in that drop zone.
03:25Yeah, I can say look out for Lewis but he's done a personal best decent first sector as well has
03:29Lewis.
03:29Alonso goes fastest.
03:31He's been quickest in many stages so far.
03:35Bottas seventh fastest.
03:36He's on the cusp.
03:37Kevin Magnussen goes into the top five.
03:39Bottas now down to eighth and the chequered flag is out.
03:42Fernando Alonso was the first to take that chequered flag.
03:45So Alonso, Magnussen and Bottas, all three of them, they're qualifying and they'll wait to see if they can come
03:51out in Q3.
03:52George Russell will be next to cross the line.
03:54Actually Joe Guanyu goes fifth fastest.
03:57Then Russell crosses the line to go second behind Fernando Alonso.
04:00What though of Russell's teammate at Mercedes Lewis Hamilton goes fourth fastest.
04:05Six poles previously.
04:06Hamilton's put himself into Q3 for a chance once again as Alex Albon misses out by seven one hundredths of
04:12a second.
04:14And Valtteri Bottas takes the chequered flag.
04:17He's the one at risk at the moment as Verstappen goes fastest overall.
04:20Esteban Ocon, two personal bests through the first two sectors here.
04:24He could knock Valtteri Bottas out of qualifying right at the end of this Q2 session.
04:30The Alpine of Fernando Alonso is second fastest.
04:33Esteban Ocon crosses the line now to go into the top ten and push Valtteri Bottas out of it.
04:40It makes Schumacher into Q3 once again. We lost Bottas, Albon, Perez, Norris and Leclerc.
04:47On board with Verstappen as Joe Guanyu crosses the line in fifth and now sixth as Verstappen a 1.22
04:54.7.
04:54That's 1.3 seconds clear of George Russell.
04:58Carlos Sainz next to cross the line puts his Ferrari on the front row.
05:02Two former career front rows for Carlos Sainz.
05:04It could be a third here at the moment as Alonso now crosses the line and goes third fastest behind
05:09Sainz.
05:10It's 1.1 seconds between Verstappen and Sainz.
05:13That's a big gap to park some Formula One cars in.
05:17I was going to say, question is, is it the right time for the slick tyres?
05:21Can George Russell compete with that Red Bull but it just wouldn't turn in?
05:27Tyre's too cold.
05:29So it's all about the breaking point for the final chicane.
05:32The Red Bull's quick at a straight line.
05:34The Ferrari's been a little bit faster recently than it was.
05:37But Verstappen a great exit.
05:40Never qualified.
05:41On pole on the front row here in Montreal.
05:44Verstappen goes quicker.
05:451.21.2.
05:47That's the benchmark for Carlos Sainz to try and get above.
05:51He almost lost it out of the final turn and he did lose enough time sadly to once again just
05:58fall within one place of a first pole in Formula One.
06:03Sainz on the front row.
06:05Hamilton P3 and look at that sliding its way out of the final corner.
06:10Dramatic finale from Fernando Alonso who goes on to the front row.
06:14Brilliant effort from Fernando Alonso and boy oh boy does a sellout Montreal crowd.
06:22Absolutely love that.
06:24You are, Paul.
06:26Well, not bad then, but it was tricky conditions on it.
06:31No, that was, er, yeah.
06:34I won't set my last class but you were on top of that pole session.
06:37Nice job.
06:38Fernando Alonso at the age of 40.
06:41He's 41 next month has put his car on the front row.
06:48Well deserved.
06:49Yeah.
06:49Super, super driving.
