00:00Great show here at the Nintendo, more coming to you live from the Gamescom here in Cologne, Germany.
00:07I'm your host Tim Feltner and I'm so happy to be here right now because we're going to have a
00:13look at the new Metroid.
00:15Do we have some Metroid fans here?
00:19That's good to know but I'm not quite sure yet so can we do that again?
00:23Do we have some Metroid fans here?
00:28Woo, that's exactly what I wanted to hear so thank you guys for attending our stage right here and thank
00:34you of course over there at home, you guys tuning in via live stream, it's good to have you with
00:39us.
00:40So if you are interested in Metroid I guess it's only fitting that we have a very special guest coming
00:46for you.
00:47We have two, so not just one special guest we have two special guests.
00:51So please welcome the producer of Metroid, Samos Returns from Nintendo, Mr. Sakamoto, as well as Jose Luis Marquez, the
01:02creative director from Mercury's team who co-developed the game together with Nintendo.
01:10Mr. Sakamoto, hey, it's so good to have you here. Jose Luis, please guys, take a seat. So good to
01:18have you here.
01:21We are also joined by Didi, our translator. Hey Didi, good to have you here. And of course Chris, our
01:28colleague from Nintendo of Europe, who's going to do the gameplay parts.
01:32So Mr. Sakamoto and Jose Luis, do you have something to say to our audience?
01:37Yes. Guten Tag Deutschland.
01:54Hello everyone. It's a great pleasure to be here at Gamescom and I thank you all for your warm welcome.
02:02Hi, it's great to be here at Cologne and we are really looking forward to showing you all some new
02:08exciting new content never seen before from Metroid Summer Returns.
02:13Thank you very much. It's so good to have you here. So Mr. Sakamoto, before we dive into the gameplay,
02:18maybe you want to tell us something about why you decided to make a remake of Metroid 2 Return of
02:24Samos.
02:25Yes. I wasn't involved in the development of the original Metroid 2 Return of Samus. However, since a long time,
02:43I've wanted to take on the challenge of remaking this epic game according to my own interpretation of the game.
02:59This Metroid 2 is an important event for the Metroid series, namely the encounter between Samus and the baby Metroid,
03:09which will have a big impact on the story of the series then on.
03:25I thought that providing our longtime fans as well as the new players with the opportunity to revisit this important
03:35episode in a modernized version would be beneficial for the series as a whole.
03:46It was around that time I heard Mercury's team was interested in taking on the challenge of remaking a Metroid
03:55game.
04:09Seeing their past work, I felt that they would have the necessary know-how and a new perspective as well
04:16as a fresh outlook in order to come up with exciting new ideas to make a new 2D Metroid game.
04:30So I went to Spain with already high expectations and had them prepare a prototype.
04:41Seeing their output, they managed to surpass my expectations which were already high.
04:52I knew then that I had found my ideal partner.
04:55That's good to know. So Jose-Louis, what can you tell us about this collaboration and why you especially wanted
05:01to work on Metroid?
05:02Well, collaborating with Nintendo, Metroid has always been on our minds because I and all of my team in Spain
05:08are huge Metroid fans and it's been a long way since our first meeting with Nintendo.
05:14We are very happy to have finally finished work on Metroid.
05:20So thank you very much for that. So we will now switch to live gameplay.
05:25Chris already has the 3DS in his hands right now to show a little bit of how the game works
05:30and of course also a new ability in Samus Arsenal.
05:34That's quite interesting. So Mr. Sakamoto, what were the main reasons to bring Metroid Samus Returns to the 3DS?
05:46Having two screens suits very well the Metroid gameplay.
06:00The lower screen enables you to constantly display the map as well as swiftly switch between weapons with just a
06:09quick touch.
06:09This is how the game works with two screens.
06:12It's very effective in two screens.
06:13But with that, I thought it was very effective in 3DS.
06:19Not only does the Nintendo 3DS greatly contribute to the comfortability of the gameplay,
06:27it also offers the 3D stereoscopic feature which enhances the graphic experience of the game to bring the game to
06:34life.
06:35So we are just seeing right now that Samus has used the melee counter.
06:40So Jose Luis, what makes you come up with this specific idea?
06:43Would you like the idea for Samus to have other sensitive movements to counter attacks, incoming enemy attacks,
06:50to let them stand and give them just one shot?
06:54And this movement is also very useful when you use it as a boss,
06:58because it allows Samus to start devastating that sequence.
07:03So the teleport station that we are going to see right now are also a new addition,
07:09and they allow Samus to revisit places that she already visited.
07:15So maybe you can tell us something about how you came up with that idea.
07:24This idea came from Mercury Steam.
07:28This was the first time this element was implemented in a Metroid game.
07:36And it was spot on.
07:47Especially because of the unique level design of Metroid 2 Return of Samus,
07:52which Metroid Samus Returns is based on,
07:56I felt that this feature worked particularly well.
07:59That's good to know.
08:00So Chris, I think you're going to play and tell us a little bit about that?
08:04Yeah, we're actually at a very tense moment in the game right now,
08:08because we've encountered a Metroid.
08:10And in Metroid Samus Returns, Samus is on a mission on planet SR388
08:16to defeat all the remaining Metroids on this planet.
08:20The current Metroid we're facing is an Alpha Metroid,
08:24which is definitely not the strongest Metroid evolution that we will encounter,
08:28but it has already developed a little bit,
08:32because it has created some fire abilities.
08:35The best ways to defeat Metroids are to either use Missiles or the Ice Beam.
08:42But there is one more effective way,
08:45and that's by using the melee counter,
08:47and then fire away with Missiles and Super Missiles.
08:52What you can see now is that I have defeated this Alpha Metroid,
08:55and I also acquire a piece of Metroid DNA.
09:00And by collecting enough Metroid DNA,
09:02I can progress at certain parts of the game.
09:07What you can also see here is that Samus is very slow in the water.
09:12That's because currently she doesn't have her strongest suit yet,
09:15so I am really impeded by the water right now.
09:20Luckily, it's only a small part of water.
09:23So when I'm out, I can go at full speed again.
09:31And here we have reached a special part in the game,
09:36because this is the place where Samus will acquire her fourth and final Aeon ability,
09:41called the Phase Drift.
09:43And that's actually a good question for Jose Luis,
09:46because as we are just seeing right now,
09:48that Samus is in front of the Phase Drift ability,
09:51and she acquired us.
09:52What made you come up with this idea?
09:54Yes, for the last Aeon ability that Samus gets in the game,
09:57we wanted an ability that could be combined perfectly well
10:00with the other existing abilities,
10:02and with the classic abilities too.
10:03So we came up with this idea to slow down everything around Samus,
10:07so she could more easily kill enemies and bosses making use of this.
10:13And this is especially useful when it is combined
10:16with the Beam Burst special ability, Aeon ability.
10:20And it is also very useful when using level design
10:24to solve some very interesting puzzles
10:26to make your way forward in the game,
10:29and also to backtrack and find some previously inaccessible secrets.
10:35Yeah, so Jose Luis just mentioned that sometimes you need to use the Phase Drift
10:40to progress through some puzzles.
10:42What you could see is that earlier I dropped down here because of the breakable blocks,
10:47but now that I've acquired the Phase Drift,
10:49I can slow down time, and these blocks break a lot slower,
10:52so I can get safely across.
10:55Also at this spot I would like to highlight the ability of Samus
10:59to aim in all 360 degrees.
11:01This really helps her to hit all the enemies even from a distance at pinpoint precision.
11:08But in addition, what you can see here is that the moment I aim at a block
11:13that requires a grapple beam, the beam automatically switches.
11:16And I don't even have to use the touch screen to switch the beams,
11:21it automatically switches to use the grapple beam
11:23and just makes it a little bit more convenient to progress.
11:27So then we've now reached the final area of this demonstration.
11:31You can see that the fireballs are shooting at a very high pace here,
11:36and it's very difficult to get all the way to the top without getting hit.
11:40Luckily, there is a big Aeon Orb here, which replenishes all of my Aeon energy,
11:45so that I have the time to activate the phase drift.
11:49And now, with the slowed down time, suddenly timing my jump is a lot easier,
11:55and I can land on this elevator, which takes us to the next area.
12:01However, this is where the gameplay demonstration ends,
12:04because Mr. Sakamoto and Jose Luis have a lot more to share with us,
12:08so I hand the word back to them.
12:09I think so, yeah.
12:10So thank you very much for taking us through the game for now.
12:13But now we actually want to show players a completely new antagonist
12:20that they are going to face.
12:21Let's have a look.
12:39entity.
13:09Looks like anything right.
13:09You know how fast I can use it?
13:19Noi, questo è davvero davvero tuffo.
13:22Grazie.
13:25Quindi, Mr. Sakamoto,
13:27cosa ha deciso di aggiungere un nuovo sequenze in questo gioco?
13:34Questo è un altro consiglio per la squadra di Mercury.
13:36Grazie.
13:43Adding different kinds of excitement to a game is very effective.
14:04Most Metroid games ends with an escape mission against a timer
14:09and I felt that adding a similar sense of tension in a new way would enhance the excitement
14:15and so I was really happy to see this implemented in this game.
14:19Yeah, I see that.
14:21So Jose Luis, what can you tell us about the process of designing a completely new character like the Digger
14:26now?
14:27Well, first of all, we really loved the idea to have this new enemy in the game because it didn't
14:31appear in the original game.
14:33Well, this enemy was designed for some to feel a sense of the whole game.
14:40We wanted also to spy things up and surprise both classic and new players.
14:46And this enemy was also designed so we could change the pacing of the game in certain places.
14:51So it appears different times in different places and making different things.
14:56That's true. So for me, one of the most interesting aspects actually of this title is that we can see
15:03Metroids evolve over the course of the game.
15:05Like in Age, of course, and I believe that this game, if I'm not mistaken, has also the most variety
15:12of Metroids that Samus has encountered across the whole series.
15:16So do you think you can show us a little bit more?
15:20Like something new, something really tough, really challenging, a new tough Metroid, for example?
15:50I have here a clip to show you of one of the toughest Metroid's, namely the first Metroid.
15:56The Omega Metroid
15:57Let's have a look
16:33The Omega Metroid
16:56Well done
16:57Thank you for that
17:01That looked really really tough
17:03So as it seems that the life of Samos Aran
17:06Is always connected to the story of two alien species
17:09As we know for one
17:11The unfriendly ones
17:12The Metroids
17:13And the one friendly towards the humans
17:15The Chosen
17:16So when the original Game Boy title was released
17:19We didn't really have a lot of background information
17:22About either one
17:23So maybe did you see that as an opportunity
17:26To give us more detail
17:27And more background information
17:29In Metroid Samus Returns
17:31In Metroid Samus Returns
17:40In Metroid Samus Returns
17:56Of what happened on the planet SR388
18:00As well as what the Chozo did
18:06They may reveal a surprising secret
18:10That nobody could have imagined
18:13So Jose Luis
18:14Maybe you have something to add here
18:16Yes
18:16We hope
18:17Like this will be an incentive
18:18This way to discover all secrets
18:21And explore the whole planet
18:22And we will reward players
18:23All right
18:25So unfortunately
18:26This is already the end of this segment
18:29But don't worry
18:31Metroid Samus Returns will return
18:33In fact in only about 25 to 30 minutes
18:37We're going to have another segment
18:38Of Metroid Samus Returns
18:40With an in-depth look over there
18:42In our live streaming booth
18:44Unfortunately our audience
18:46Who's tuning in via live stream
18:48Cannot see it right now
18:49But as you guys are here
18:51At Gamescom
18:52You can see it over there
18:53So for this time
18:55I will say thank you of course to Chris
18:57We're going to see each other again over there
18:59And we're going to have an in-depth look
19:01Into the new Aeon abilities
19:03So thank you very much Chris of course
19:08And please give Mr. Sakamoto
19:11And Jose Luis a big round of applause
19:13As they're both joining me
19:15In front of the stage
19:16So they can say goodbye to you
19:21As well
19:22So thank you
19:22So before we go
19:24Would you Mr. Sakamoto
19:25And Jose Luis
19:26Say something to our audience
19:28Metroid Samus Returns
19:34We're confident
19:36That both long-time fans
19:38As well as new players
19:40Will have a blast
19:41In Metroid Samus Returns
19:48We can't wait to have you play
19:51And enjoy this exciting new title
20:01Don't miss out on discovering the world of Metroid
20:04Samus Returns
20:06When it comes out on September 15th
20:08I won't miss out
20:10And I think Jose Luis
20:11You have something to add here
20:19Well we put all of our heart and passion
20:21To create the best possible Metroid game
20:25And we are really excited for you people to play
20:29And the launch day cannot come soon enough for us
20:32I would like to thank you very much
20:35Mr. Sakamoto
20:37And Jose Luis from Mercury Steam
20:39For showing us a little bit more
20:41About what Metroid Samus Returns is all about
20:44It's a great collaboration
20:45Between Nintendo and Mercury Steam
20:48So thank you very much for your insights
20:50And I think you guys can be quite excited
20:52About September 15th
