00:03Hi guys, welcome back to Nintendo Minute.
00:06We are here with special guest Sam.
00:08You might have seen her on Mini Treehouse Live.
00:10Thank you for being with us today.
00:11Oh no problem.
00:12Your first appearance on Nintendo Minute.
00:13Welcome.
00:13What took you so long Sam?
00:15It's exciting.
00:15Come on.
00:16For the one person who might have been doing a Nintendo Minute Treehouse Live fan fiction,
00:20this is the big day.
00:21This is the big moment right now.
00:23A crossover event.
00:24A Nintendo Minute Treehouse Live Metroid fan fiction.
00:27It's all happening.
00:27But today Sam, you're with us to play Metroid Sam's Returns on Nintendo 3DS.
00:32I am.
00:32Very exciting.
00:33We do have some new game stuff to show people.
00:37Yeah, so specifically actually talking about Amiibo.
00:40We've got some here that we can play around with before we actually jump too far into gameplay if you
00:43like.
00:43Have them all.
00:44All the babies as you called it.
00:46I'm not going to be able to bring those back to the office.
00:48No, I'm going to be taking these and running out the door.
00:52So, goodbye.
00:53But the game functions with the two Amiibo from the Smash Brothers series.
00:57Mm-hmm.
00:57And also the two new Amiibo that we showed off at E3.
01:01And these guys are going to be available as a set so you get the little dupe pack.
01:04Pretty cool.
01:04This one is Sam is in her like classic crouch pose that is on the cover.
01:10On the cover of the game.
01:10Of the original game.
01:11Of the original game, right?
01:12That's right too.
01:12And then my personal favorite is this little Metroid baby that you can like squish.
01:17Yeah, it's kind of the thing where you didn't realize that you needed that in your life until you do
01:20it.
01:20Until you do it.
01:21And you're like oh.
01:22I'm going to keep this on my desk forever just to squish it when I'm like stress ball.
01:26Yeah.
01:27Tense medium just like I got this.
01:29Okay.
01:30But anyways, besides that.
01:31You're the galactic menace, not the Metroid.
01:32I knew it.
01:34I'm fine with that.
01:35I'm fine with that.
01:35But not only can you squish this adorable thing.
01:39There's actually some good functionality that we'll show in a little bit.
01:41But if we want to scan some other Amiibo.
01:43Yeah, we can hop right in.
01:44So where we are right now in the game is we've just activated one of the Chozo seals.
01:48We figured out how to do that.
01:49But before we go in further, we can get some Amiibo going here.
01:53Yep.
01:53Who'd you like to start with?
01:55I will let you do the honors.
01:57Oh, how exciting.
01:58So here we have the Samus and that's giving us a reserve tank.
02:02I'm going to say yes.
02:03Let's unlock that and see what we've got.
02:05The game is challenging.
02:06So all the reserve tanks you can get is helpful.
02:08It really helps.
02:09Yeah.
02:09And it's nice that it's optional stuff that you can tap in if you want to have the extra
02:13help.
02:13Right.
02:13This one's an Aeon reserve tank.
02:15So in this game, Samus has these new abilities, Aeon abilities that draw from a shared
02:19energy pool.
02:20And if you want to use those a lot and they become a big part of your gameplay, it's nice
02:23to have the extra backup.
02:24So if you run out of Aeon energy, this is going to give you a boost back.
02:27Right.
02:28And here we've got the secondary functionality as well.
02:30So each of these amiibo have one function that you can do any time during your gameplay
02:35and then another function that's only going to be able to be unlocked after you finish
02:38the game.
02:39So you want to finish the game and then come back in and do another time and see what they
02:42give you at that point.
02:42Lots of replaying probably that will happen with this game with people.
02:46I think this one's going to keep people busy.
02:48Yeah.
02:48Exactly.
02:49Cool.
02:49So here we've got a little bit of gallery content that we could unlock when we're all done.
02:54But let's set up.
02:55So it's kind of nice that the Smash amiibo work as well.
02:59So another reserve tank here.
03:01Missiles.
03:02Oh, nice.
03:03Always handy.
03:04Nice.
03:04You need that.
03:05You need that against these Metroids.
03:07So, perfect.
03:08And the last one here.
03:09Awesome.
03:09A little 06 hand is going here.
03:10One last tank to go here.
03:13Good.
03:13So we have a good variety of energy tanks here that we've collected from the amiibo.
03:19And then later on, you can see what this little guy does.
03:23In the meantime, I'll be squishing it while you play.
03:25So this was from the initial wave of Super Smash Brothers amiibo.
03:28Obviously this is coming out.
03:30But you can compare sort of the level of detail.
03:32The detail is unbelievable.
03:34And you can see how the amiibo process has evolved.
03:35And I really like sort of the back area here.
03:37You can compare the level of detail.
03:39This looks really cool and it's very substantial.
03:42Heft to it.
03:43Yes.
03:43You like the heavy amiibo.
03:45You have a thing.
03:45Except when I dropped them on my feet.
03:47That's happening.
03:47Yeah, that sounds painful.
03:49So you're exploring a new area.
03:52We haven't shown this before.
03:53So that's really exciting.
03:54And of course, I think we've had a bit of gameplay that we've shown where Samus has
04:01to sort of collect the Metroid DNA to unlock the seals and these Chozo statues in this world.
04:12So where are you in the game now?
04:15This is a very interesting moment.
04:17So here, actually discovering another piece of technology that's going to be really handy
04:20as I'm revisiting different areas of SR388.
04:24So there's going to be a lot of retracing my steps as I collect new power-ups and I get
04:27the ability to access other parts of the map.
04:30And this is a teleportation station.
04:32Right now I can't do much with it, but if I find another one I'll actually be able to network
04:37them up
04:37so I can use those to travel back and forth in the map.
04:41And I think I misspoke earlier, so we just activated the Chozo seal there.
04:45Okay, perfect.
04:46We just got to see a little bit of animation there and boop, boop, boop.
04:49I love the way the Chozo statues look in this game.
04:52It's very creepy looking, I guess, and ominous.
04:57It adds to the atmosphere of the game a lot.
05:01They've really done so much to really build out the sense of kind of presence and place with SR388.
05:06and it's pretty interesting to watch the step up where I loved Metroid 2.
05:11It was my very first Metroid game.
05:12I have very fond memories of it, but it was good for its time.
05:16Now we can do a lot more with SR388 coming back here with the Nintendo 3DS.
05:20It's in color. That's number one.
05:22Yeah.
05:22I know it's going to be hard for folks to appreciate here, but the 3D functionality is really fun.
05:27Yeah, it is. You're playing in 3D right now.
05:29I'm like looking over your shoulder, but it still looks so good.
05:32So yeah, this is another one of the Chozo seals.
05:33So here I'm going to need to defeat some Metroid and then interact with this again.
05:37Right.
05:38But I know they're Metroid here.
05:40If I want to play kind of classic old school, I could just hunt further into the planet,
05:43try to track these guys down, find out where they are, and destroy them.
05:46But I've got a couple little like helpers that I can call in here,
05:49and one is actually using this amiibo here.
05:52So let me pop open the amiibo screen here.
05:55Give them a quick tap.
05:56Little guy in here.
05:58Metroid detected!
05:59Yay!
06:00So here on the lower screen, we'll just see a little indicator pop up.
06:04Yes.
06:04So there we see where a Metroid is hiding.
06:06You'll notice I haven't opened up any of that map, so I still have to figure out how to actually
06:10get there.
06:11And dig my way in.
06:12But it is handy to have that little bit extra help.
06:14It gives you a general direction, right, of where you could be headed.
06:17So maybe we can try to get there now.
06:19I always do this where, like, I see something on the map, and I'm like, okay, I'll try to get
06:22there.
06:22And then I get distracted along the way.
06:24I think that's one of the beauties of the game.
06:26It really encourages exploration and just, okay, so here, maybe trying something a little foolish just for the sake of
06:31science.
06:32That looks scary in there.
06:34It's not good, it's not good, it's not good!
06:36So there is a fair bit of that in the game here where I'm certainly going to find things that
06:40I can't access yet.
06:42And I can tell, okay, I'm going to need to find the right kind of power up, the right kind
06:45of upgrade, and then try this again.
06:47But it's just kind of fun to go wherever you want to go and just see what happens.
06:50You know, with that older style of Metroid games, one of the things that gave me trouble was the navigation,
06:55because you had to toggle to bring the map up, and it's so nice to have it here.
06:59To have it on the bottom screen.
06:59I mean, this is not the first game to do something like this, but just being able to just glance
07:02down and see where you're headed,
07:04it makes it, for me, who has bad kind of navigation skills, much more playable.
07:09Always lost.
07:09I'm going the wrong way.
07:10Always.
07:11But this is especially good for, I think, Metroid games, because it really encourages you to retroverse and explore.
07:16Yeah, you can see where you need to go and where you haven't been.
07:19And then one cool thing that you can do is the map is actually interactive, too, right?
07:22You can actually go to the map and put in markers of places that you may have explored and want
07:29to come back to.
07:30Or, like, let's say that doorway we just went into was terrifying, and we can't go into it right now,
07:36but maybe once we get some sort of power-up, we can come back to it.
07:39If you want to remember where that is, there is actually a way to do that on the bottom screen.
07:42Yeah, and I can actually show you that here as well.
07:44Really nice.
07:44So you've got this pin system where I could drag and drop indicators on the map if I wanted to.
07:49I'm okay with that right now.
07:51Pop that off.
07:52I've also got this sort of legend that shows me what the icons mean that I've uncovered already.
07:58So as I'm looking through this map, if I need a save station really quickly, something like that,
08:02I'm able to just hop back in and find what I was looking for.
08:05Yeah, so nice.
08:06And then I've got the 360-degree aiming with kind of that red visual effect that comes up when I've
08:14got an enemy in my sights,
08:16which makes it a little easier also, if I'm just not as comfortable with aiming,
08:20to just use this to make sure that my shots are really counting and really nice when you're using missiles
08:24because you don't want to run out of those in a key moment.
08:27You want to make sure you've got those going.
08:29Just make sure you're standing in a safe spot to do that.
08:32Yeah, for sure. Things will sneak up on you really fast.
08:35That's happened to me before.
08:36And as you're learning how to play the game, a big part of it is learning the tells of the
08:40different enemies.
08:41Yeah, like what their time is.
08:43When they're going to come at you.
08:45When I first played this game, I think it really kind of added to the creepiness of the game for
08:49me as well,
08:50that I'd be playing really late at night. I didn't want my parents to know how late I was playing,
08:53so I'd have my Game Boy and the Game Boy Light just tucked under the covers.
08:57And then I'm trying to make my map on graph paper because that's all I've got.
09:01Oh, you did paper maps.
09:02Wow.
09:03That's hardcore.
09:03I would not be surprised if my parents still have those somewhere hiding in the house.
09:06I think your parents knew that you were doing that, by the way.
09:09Yeah.
09:09You thought you were sneaky, but I think they probably knew.
09:11That's not a bad behavior.
09:14Yeah.
09:14Keep me out of trouble playing.
09:15We all did that.
09:16Staying off the streets.
09:17We all, that's right.
09:18It's safe in your bedroom.
09:20And just to draw a quick bit of attention here on the lower screen.
09:23My little metro detector is starting to chirp.
09:25There's something nearby.
09:27Yes.
09:28Something is happening.
09:29Do-do-do.
09:30More mysterious things in the background.
09:33Yeah, they're doing a crazy cool job with the background.
09:36Just how much is going on out there.
09:37Yeah, totally.
09:38Absolutely.
09:38I love the depth.
09:40If you watch too, sometimes there's like creatures crawling around back there.
09:44There's a lot of stuff that's-
09:45There was a dead body that we saw once, remember?
09:46We were like, what is happening back there?
09:48Yeah.
09:48And then we were like, let's not stay here for too long.
09:50I didn't have such a good day.
09:52Oh, not so much.
09:53Whoa, okay.
09:54Here we go.
09:55Hi, buddy.
09:56So cute.
09:56Oh, get me out of here.
09:57Uh-oh.
09:57Here we go.
10:00So this is an alpha.
10:03A little bit charged up.
10:05He's not the most fun in the world, but here.
10:07Oh, gosh.
10:08And as far as these Metroid go, there are sort of, you know, different levels of their mutations.
10:14There we go.
10:14Right.
10:14So this is one of the, you know-
10:16Sort of the earlier-
10:18Yeah.
10:18And then they get really crazy as you continue to go ahead.
10:21Yeah.
10:21And this one, he gets all charged up like that.
10:23And Sam, we were playing earlier today, and you were like, just jump over it.
10:26What are you doing?
10:27I was like, oh, oh, sorry.
10:29Oh!
10:30Oh!
10:30Oh, no!
10:31Yes!
10:31Good, good.
10:32See?
10:33Good thing we scanned the Amiibo.
10:34We are ready to rock.
10:37Oh, gosh.
10:40You're so cute, but you're so annoying.
10:43No, why can't we be friends?
10:44I just want to be friends with you and we could go solve mysteries together.
10:47Exactly.
10:48He's so great.
10:49He wants to get along, but that just can't happen.
10:51I've got to destroy all of you.
10:54Must destroy.
10:54Must destroy.
10:55The way it's got to be.
10:56So while he's got this electrical attack going, trying to melee counter him is not going
11:00to work so well.
11:01Yeah.
11:01So I really just have to stay clear and try to land some shots on that little underbelly
11:05while he's flying by.
11:07Exactly.
11:07Whoop, whoop.
11:08Oh, oh.
11:09He might be.
11:10Where are you there?
11:11And the plant stuff in the background there.
11:13Nice.
11:15Don't want to touch the nasty red plant business.
11:17There we go.
11:18Yes.
11:18All right.
11:19I think you just illustrated how having patience in these battles is really important.
11:22Yes.
11:22This is one of those games where you can't really rush through it, right?
11:25Yeah.
11:25You need to wait for the right windows to make an attack.
11:27So you basically, after you've defeated that Metroid, you collected its DNA.
11:32So where are we going?
11:33Maybe we'll just take a wander around and see what we find.
11:35Yeah.
11:35Let's explore a little bit.
11:36Yeah.
11:39It's always so unsettling when you find these little husks and then you know somebody's
11:42Something's happening.
11:43Yeah.
11:43It gets really creepy too when your detector starts going off because you know there's
11:46something nearby and is it behind the next door or maybe the one after that.
11:50And it beeps like, beeps like faster and faster.
11:52You're like, oh my gosh, what's happening?
11:53Yeah.
11:54They've built up so much atmosphere into the audio for the game that it just looks really
11:58spooky.
11:58The audio is spectacular.
11:59The music is really good.
12:01Yeah, it definitely adds to that.
12:04Sakamoto-san, of course, has this incredibly long fascinating relationship with the Metroid
12:07series.
12:08Metroid 2 is actually the only one he never worked on, but he has huge respect for the game
12:12and it was really nice to have a chance to come back to what's really a classic story
12:16in Samus's history and have a chance to revisit it and then working with Mercury's theme to
12:21really bring this thing to life in the way that Sakamoto-san had been imagining for so
12:26long since checking out the original game.
12:28Oh, nice.
12:29Classic.
12:30Back here.
12:31We need this.
12:32So this was actually really my navigation system in the original game was just waiting
12:38until I got the bomb and then bombing every inch of terrain.
12:41I'm like, something will do something so you can just lay these little puppies down.
12:45Yeah.
12:46There you go.
12:47But now you have a little bit of help with that.
12:50We do have an Aon ability that could help you with that a little bit.
12:54That's true.
12:54I mean, you could continue to bomb everything in sight.
12:57That's fine.
12:57It's satisfying in its way.
12:59But let me hop out of here and I'll show you that as well.
13:04The Aon ability is actually new to this game and I think they're really cool because,
13:09you know, it's totally cool if you want to play this the old school way and explore and just
13:15kind of bomb your way through it.
13:17But if you want to use some of these new abilities to kind of help you out along the way,
13:22that's there for you too.
13:23This is actually a good place to show it off.
13:25So we've got, you'll see here on the lower map, I've got terrain that I've already passed
13:28through that's cleared through so I can see, okay, what I've already been to check out,
13:31some icons there.
13:32But if I hit the A button, I've got Scan Pulse active right now.
13:36And there, a whole section of the map has been opened up to me.
13:39So I've got a bit of a sneak peek at, okay, I can see some new icons on the map.
13:42I can see a little bit of the surrounding terrain.
13:44And it's totally optional, so if I don't want to use it, totally cool not to.
13:48But it is nice if you get kind of stuck in a pinch, you just can't figure out where to
13:52go.
13:52You know there's something nearby that you're missing.
13:56Is that our other teleportation station?
13:58Yeah, so this is another one, now that we have a pair active, I could actually...
14:02So now you can transfer between the two.
14:04Oh, nice!
14:05I don't think I've ever seen this before, actually.
14:07And these are really handy.
14:08Sometimes you want to take your time exploring back through a new area,
14:13backtracking to see what you can find.
14:14Other times it is nice to just quick travel.
14:16You know exactly where you need to go, you just want to hop across the map.
14:19So here, for example, I could go back to the previous area,
14:23and then take a look, okay, I've got the teleportation station there.
14:26I could just hop right back.
14:28I don't want to go backtrack just yet, but it's something I could do later,
14:32and something that's certainly worth checking out later on as I go through the game.
14:36If you want to 100% this game and find all of the items and everything that's hidden within this
14:40world...
14:41That would be super helpful.
14:41It really does pay off to make sure that you've found absolutely everything that's hiding within this planet.
14:46They've really tucked a lot away in here.
14:48I actually love the background in here, too, with this ruined statue.
14:50You kind of have to be a little bit careful because you are using an energy tank, right,
14:54when you're using an Aeon ability.
14:57So use it when you need it.
14:59Yeah, and I can show actually here, if I just pop it again,
15:02you'll see that chunk dropping off there.
15:05So it's here.
15:09And there, still affecting...
15:10Oh, so you can see it affecting it, even behind a closed door.
15:12That's kind of cool, yeah.
15:19And this is really fun to play with as well.
15:22So we haven't revealed the full set of power-ups and upgrades
15:25and everything that we've got tucked away in the game just yet,
15:27but we've been able to show off a few so far through the different coverage that we've had,
15:31and this one is super, super fun.
15:34So with this one, I can actually swap back and forth on the touch screen there.
15:38So I can ice if I want to, or I can go back to my original weapon.
15:44But if I hit the ice, so I can actually do a quick freeze there,
15:48and you'll see he falls off and comes back around.
15:51What I actually do, too, is charge up the ice beam,
15:54and then really freeze this guy, and then he makes a nice stepping spoon.
15:57Oh, nice.
15:59Couldn't make this jump before, but now that I've got ice going.
16:04That's like, that enemy's like perfect for that,
16:05because it kind of does like a little floaty thing.
16:07It's like, you are meant to be a platform.
16:09You are just so cute.
16:10You are just so cute.
16:11Exactly.
16:12Your destiny is for me to freeze you and step on you.
16:15Yeah, it looks like I've definitely got a Metroid somewhere nearby,
16:18looking at how my lower screen is doing.
16:20Oh, boy.
16:22Quickly blinking.
16:29So that door should be all set now.
16:31Can I help back to the other side?
16:32I'll help back to the other side.
16:32Nice.
16:33It's actually interesting to looking at, with the map,
16:37we don't have a one-for-one correlation here with the original game map,
16:40largely because we've got this new 360 degrees range of movement.
16:46So I can actually access, right at the beginning of the game,
16:49different kind of areas and directions that I couldn't in the original,
16:51and the dev team took that into account.
16:53So the map's not a one-for-one match.
16:55They've actually made adjustments to the map
16:57and been able to hide more stuff in there.
17:01and I think that really comes to the heart of this being a reimagining.
17:03Right.
17:04So if you played the original game,
17:05there'll be a lot here that kind of tugs on your heartstrings
17:06and reminds you of those original experiences,
17:09but at the same time, it's going to feel really new.
17:11Exactly.
17:11So you just got another upgrade here.
17:14I did.
17:15The spider ball.
17:16Oh, my gosh.
17:17See, you don't like spiders, but how do you feel about the spider ball?
17:19I'm fine with this.
17:20This one's fun.
17:21It's a name only.
17:22Yeah, yeah, exactly.
17:23And so I can actually even use a bomb jump to actually bounce up on something.
17:29Nice.
17:31You want the spider ball back?
17:32I do love that when you start to collect these things,
17:34you just feel like, oh gosh, so much more has opened up for me,
17:38and now I can go back and do these 10 things that I wasn't able to before,
17:43and it just feels really good.
17:44It's pretty awesome.
17:46There was something hiding up here.
17:50Oh, do a little upside down.
17:51Nice.
17:52Always want the missile tanks.
17:53Yes.
17:54Always.
17:58What's happening?
17:58Oh, there he is!
17:59Is it a baby?
18:00Hi, buddy.
18:01Oh, no.
18:02Ice beam?
18:06You gave me such a nice opening.
18:08Wait a minute, we can do a little freezing.
18:09Oh, no!
18:10Oh, no!
18:12It's just for demonstration purposes.
18:14Oh!
18:15Almost fast.
18:20Sorry, buddy.
18:21It's not like that.
18:24Regular old charge at you.
18:25You're doing a lot of cycling with the weapons, I can see.
18:27Yeah.
18:28Easy with the touch screen, actually, huh?
18:30It's really handy for you.
18:30Yeah, it's just nice to pop it with your thumb whenever you want to...
18:32Right.
18:32Oh, no.
18:33Whatever you want to suspect.
18:34Oh, my gosh.
18:35No dogging.
18:37Nice.
18:38That's it?
18:39Yes?
18:39You were hot dogging.
18:40There we go.
18:40Yeah.
18:42Okay.
18:43Two down.
18:45It's all good.
18:46All right.
18:48Well...
18:49There's loads more to explore in this area, but I know how much more you want me to show.
18:52One more.
18:5337 to go.
18:54Yeah.
18:55There's a lot of that.
18:55That's nothing.
18:56We'll be back, you know, in like two years.
18:58I'm just kidding.
18:58But maybe we can probably stop here because that was a great look at this kind of new area.
19:03And thank you so much, Sam, for showing it off for us.
19:05You were amazing, of course.
19:07I'm always happy to talk about a droid.
19:08I know, right?
19:08Any time.
19:10All right.
