00:03I'd like to spend some time discussing how the progression and quest system works in Sea of Thieves
00:08and provide an insight into the kind of adventures you'll be able to have.
00:16The world of Sea of Thieves embodies the freedom, romance, high adventure
00:21and the thrilling excitement of the pirate life.
00:23As you explore, you'll discover this beautiful world full of countless adventures,
00:28unknown dangers, treacherous weather and wild, untamed islands
00:32filled with pirate caves and wildlife.
00:37Most importantly, the world is filled with other real player crews, often their own voyages.
00:43While the adventures that you embark upon in Sea of Thieves will play differently each time,
00:48ultimately, every player is on their own personal journey
00:51to build a reputation and become pirate legend.
00:54Part of this journey will be how you present yourself to other pirates.
00:59As players journey across the Sea of Thieves, they'll be able to tailor their pirate
01:03by customising items such as hooks, peg legs, beards, hairstyles, clothing, equipment and weapons.
01:10You'll be able to find a look that suits your character and play style best.
01:14But differentiating your character also includes building a reputation.
01:18The outposts of the world are inhabited by non-playable characters
01:22who have come to the Sea of Thieves with their own motivation.
01:27These characters have set up their own trading companies,
01:30each representing a unique play style.
01:32The gold hoarders have come to treasure hunt
01:34with the goal of amassing great wealth.
01:37The Merchants' Alliance have come to control trade in the Sea of Thieves,
01:41while the Order of Souls wish to control the ancient and mysterious magic
01:45of this pirate world for themselves.
01:47Each trading company will allow you to build a reputation,
01:50get promoted within their ranks,
01:52and unlock unique items and titles to show off your progress.
01:56Players build their reputation
01:58by purchasing and completing the favoured activities
02:01of each trading company, including voyages,
02:03which are what we call quests.
02:07Voyages in Sea of Thieves are physical objects
02:09that other players can see.
02:11Based on the reputation you've built with each trading company,
02:14your voyages will not only become richer and more rewarding,
02:18but they'll challenge you more and introduce more mechanics.
02:21The way your voyages look to others
02:22will also reflect this progress.
02:25Each crew member brings his or her own voyages to the table, literally.
02:29Any crew member can bring their own voyages to the crew
02:32and share their personal progression with others.
02:35Players can propose voyages on the ship,
02:38allowing the crew the chance to decide together
02:40the kinds of adventures they wish to embark upon.
02:44In fact, other players may have access to voyages that you don't,
02:47meaning that there are rewarding benefits for being part of a crew.
02:51Most importantly, there are no barriers in place
02:54preventing players playing together,
02:56since the most challenging voyages can potentially be shared.
02:59There are no waiting for friends to catch up with you,
03:02no encounters where you'll face off against overpowered players.
03:05The tools and weapons in Sea of Thieves function just as you would expect.
03:10A cutlass is just a cutlass.
03:12A flintlock pistol is just that.
03:14How you use these tools and work with other players
03:17is what will make the difference.
03:19Even just having an extra pair of eyes and ears in the crow's nest
03:22can make all the difference in a game like Sea of Thieves.
03:25Elements, such as your reputation progress,
03:27mean that progression in Sea of Thieves is not a one-dimensional number.
03:31How you look to others,
03:33the titles you've earned and choose to use,
03:35and the voyages you have,
03:36allow for far richer interactions between players.
03:39This is a pirate world after all,
03:41and it's up to you how you want to uniquely express yourself.
03:44Now let's look in detail
03:45to the kinds of adventures you can have with the trading companies.
03:48The Gold Hoarders Trading Company
03:50was founded by legendary treasure hunters
03:52who wish to amass a great fortune.
03:55They are in possession of a mysterious set of skeleton keys,
03:58and they will pay pirates a cut of gold
04:00when they return chests to them.
04:03The more you build your reputation with the Gold Hoarders,
04:05the more they'll trust you to go after larger hordes of lost treasure,
04:09some of which will be protected by former pirates,
04:12now transformed into forsaken skeletons.
04:15Some of the voyage types, like the riddle maps,
04:17will test your knowledge of the islands,
04:19encouraging exploration and teamwork.
04:24Players also have the freedom to just explore,
04:27coming across opportunities in the world
04:29that might earn them reputation with the trading company.
04:32There are rewards waiting across the world,
04:35whether that be deep in caves, on sunken reefs,
04:38or in the hands of other players.
04:39You just need to seek them out.
04:41While voyages give you specific objectives,
04:44you'll be free to take on the world at your own pace,
04:47and see what's waiting out there.
04:49Players also receive special awards from each trading company called commendations.
04:53These allow players to earn specific titles
04:56and show off some of their special achievements.
04:59Of course, not all treasure is silver and gold,
05:02and we wanted a world with very different activities
05:04that players and crews could seamlessly move between.
05:07The Merchants Alliance are seeking to control the flow of trade
05:10between the fledgling outposts of civilisation in the Sea of Thieves.
05:14They will pay pirates to scout for supplies
05:16and ferry shipments like resources and gunpowder across the sea.
05:21These kinds of cargo can earn you handsome rewards
05:24if you fulfil your contract and deliver on time.
05:28There are, of course, much more valuable resources out there in the world.
05:33We wanted our wildlife to not only make the world of Sea of Thieves feel alive,
05:37we wanted to make it a major part of the gameplay
05:39and fundamental to progressing with the Merchants Alliance.
05:43Players will find different breeds of animals across the world,
05:47encouraging them to scout out islands to find what they need.
05:50Once you find the animals you need, you'll then have to catch them.
05:53Then you'll have the noble job of tending to their care
05:56on your return journey to the Merchants Alliance.
06:00Lightning from a storm and raising water levels
06:03are some of the challenges that you'll face.
06:06Of course, there's also the ever-present possibility
06:09of encountering other pirates
06:10who'll seek to relieve you of your valuable cargo.
06:13Much like the other tools you'll have at your disposal,
06:16cargo can be used in different ways,
06:18presenting you with a few tricks up your sleeve
06:20to defend against incoming boarders.
06:25The Order of Souls are a trading company
06:27formed by conjurers and seers.
06:30They have found a way to recapture the enchanted magic
06:32from the skulls of former pirates,
06:34and they'll reward anyone who brings the skulls back to them.
06:37Voyages for the Order of Souls will take players on the hunt
06:40for infamous skeleton crews and captains.
06:43Presenting players with combat-focused challenges
06:48as they work together to defeat their targets and retrieve the skulls.
06:55Some of these skeletons may be holed up
06:57in one of the many forts throughout the world,
06:59requiring players to perform a daring raid to make landfall
07:02and storm these forts in search of the skull they need.
07:06These valuable locations also present opportunities
07:09for other nearby crews.
07:11You can never be too sure who may join you
07:13and what their intentions might be.
07:17These voyages put players on the path to becoming pirate legend.
07:21But in many ways, these adventures are just the beginning.
07:24Pirate legends will not only earn the respect
07:26of their fellow players in Sea of Thieves,
07:28they will play a major role in the golden age of piracy
07:31that's still to come.
