Darwin primary school helping students transition to high school

Students at a Northern Territory school have started a program to help those graduating to secondary school. It is designed help them better cope with a huge shake up of the schooling system next year.

00:00Preparing for a scary transition into another world, high school.

00:07All the different classes and stuff to remember, that's what gets me most worried.

00:12Getting the hang of it and knowing where all the classes are and meeting new people.

00:16These kids from Palmerston have created a new program to soothe anxieties,

00:21including transforming Durak Primary into Durak High for a day.

00:26I was very nervous at the start and it's just helped me a lot today,

00:31like being with new people, moving around the school, carrying our bags and lunch boxes everywhere.

00:37I definitely know that if I didn't have these days, I would be freaking out on the first day of school.

00:43I would not know what to expect and I would just be a mess.

00:46So I'm glad that our school did this because it reduces the stress.

00:50It's not just the students preparing for a dramatic change, the adults are too.

00:55With the NT doing away with middle schools from next year.

01:00This group becoming the first Darwin public school students since 2007

01:05to attend the same school from year 7 through to year 12.

01:10Them coming into that space means that we have to make adjustments to how we teach,

01:14how we go about business and really think about spaces, what we actually do to make sure

01:20that there's all the adjustments required for a younger year level and to become familiar with all the things that they need.

01:27The plan involves transforming middle schools into year 7 to 12 high schools,

01:32the Darwin area upgrading to 4 schools and Palmerston 2.

01:36It's exciting that they become the first year 7 group.

01:39They'll be of course then the first year 8 group and the first year 9 group.

01:42And they'll be able to help pave the way for the next layer of students and people that are coming through.

01:47Students and teachers alike learning a new way forward.
