Presentazione del gameplay di Anthem a EA Play 2018.

00:08
00:30So I know all of you, like me, have had tons of questions about Anthem since last year
00:35because we're all Bioware fans.
00:37So we're going to do something a little bit different for the rest of the show
00:40and we're going to take a deep dive into Anthem.
00:43So I'm going to bring up some members of the Bioware team to chat with us.
00:46Ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm welcome to Casey Hudson,
00:50Mark Dara and Kathleen Rutzard.
01:04All right. Thanks, guys. Thanks for coming out today.
01:07Yeah, thank you.
01:08Just kind of looking to show, right?
01:09Yep.
01:10It's going to be very exciting.
01:11So Casey, we're going to go ahead and just jump right in and get started with you.
01:14So now we know that you all started, or Casey, you started your career at Bioware way back in the
01:20day,
01:20but you took a couple years off.
01:22But before you came back, you actually worked on Anthem before you left.
01:26Yeah, that's right.
01:27All right. So, you know, first of all, it's amazing to be back.
01:30It's awesome to be making games for Bioware fans.
01:33You know, we have the best fans.
01:35So it's been super satisfying to come back to it.
01:38And, you know, I just want to be able to continue the legacy of the studio.
01:41And that's kind of where it started with Anthem,
01:43is just thinking about, you know, what is the evolution of a Bioware game?
01:46And we wanted to create a brand new world for people to discover,
01:50you know, a whole new world of story and character.
01:52But we also wanted to do something that was, you know, more of a dynamic and living world,
01:57a game that would change every time you came back and played it.
02:00We also wanted to do something where, you know,
02:03if you wanted to invite your friends into it, then you could do that as well.
02:06So that was really the initial vision of the game.
02:09Not an MMO, not a multiplayer game with stories sort of bolted on the side,
02:13but something new and different.
02:14And I think the team has really captured that vision over the years.
02:17Your fans really love the stories from Bioware.
02:21But I think we're kind of curious how you're planning to make story work in this shared world.
02:26So a great story for Bioware is really about characters that you can have a connection with,
02:30choices you get to make, and feeling like the story is about you.
02:34In a lot of multiplayer games, those things get diluted
02:38because you're mixing multiplayer and storytelling into the same areas.
02:42Now, you can build a solution to that,
02:44but you have to really build it into the core of the game.
02:47And that's what we've tried to do with Anthem.
02:49It's what we call our world, my story.
02:52So when you're out in the open world,
02:55the world is really dangerous, and you're focused on your mission.
02:58And this is where other players get to play with you.
03:02The thing that's really interesting about this,
03:04it's unique for Anthem, is that this is a living, shared world.
03:08So whether there's weather, or it's nighttime,
03:13what we're experiencing, we're experiencing together.
03:16Everyone that's playing Anthem at a moment is seeing the same thing.
03:20And this is what we mean when we talk about our world.
03:22It's a shared world that we all experience together.
03:25But then when I finish my mission,
03:27I come back to a base like Fort Tarsus.
03:31And this is a single-player experience.
03:33I turn in my rewards, I talk to some characters,
03:37I experience the choices of my action.
03:40And this is where your story really lives and breathes.
03:43And by doing it this way,
03:45we're able to combine that impact and agency of a single-player story
03:50with the fun of teaming up with your friends to play co-op in combat.
03:55And we're also designing it so that we can add story for years to come.
03:59So one of the first things that we hear from our community
04:03is they want to continue to play in our worlds.
04:05When they've finished Mass Effect or Dragon Age,
04:08players want more story.
04:10And so we've designed Anthem in a way
04:12that we can actually add more story for years to come.
04:16And it could be anything.
04:17A new moment with a character that you've grown to love,
04:21or an event in the world that deepens the lore,
04:25or an entirely new storyline and plot.
04:29Well, I'm certainly not going to complain about more story.
04:31I don't think anybody out there is going to either.
04:34So Kathleen, I wanted to ask you,
04:35from a writing perspective, since you are the lead writer,
04:37can you speak to what it's like to create a new world like Anthem
04:41from the beginning?
04:42Well, what's really exciting for us,
04:46and not just the writers, but all of the devs,
04:49the designers, the artists,
04:51is that we're creating something new and mysterious
04:54for players to discover.
04:55So at the heart of the premise of Anthem
04:59is a world left unfinished by the gods.
05:02But the gods left behind their massive tools.
05:05And those tools are in constant conflict
05:07with this unknowable force called the Anthem of Creation.
05:12And the chaos of those things pushing against each other
05:15means that the world is constantly being reshaped
05:18in new and unpredictable ways.
05:20Yeah, violent storms, mutated creatures, gigantic monsters.
05:23It's a dangerous environment that you need to wear
05:25a suit of powered armor, a javelin, to be safe in.
05:30Now, something I think a lot of players out there
05:32maybe don't stop to think about
05:34is just how much work goes into creating
05:37a new intellectual property or IP, as we've been saying.
05:40Now, we've seen all these different creatures,
05:42and Mark, you mentioned the storms.
05:44What's the process of creating a game like from scratch?
05:48Yeah, it's something we've done a few times at BioWare.
05:52And really, the hardest part is getting started,
05:54just kind of getting off the blank page.
05:56So what we try to do is we think about
05:58the new experiences that we're trying to unlock for players.
06:01So what is the fantasy fulfillment?
06:03What are the new things you actually get to go and do
06:05that are different from what you've played before?
06:07So that's where we start.
06:09And then once we think about those things,
06:13that's the power of creating new IP,
06:15especially for games,
06:16is that you actually get to build a whole fictional universe
06:20that's meant to bring out a certain experience.
06:22And then once we do that,
06:24then we still need to build all the rest of the stuff.
06:26And what unlocks us creatively
06:27is to think about principles around art style, tone,
06:32and even the technology and the politics of our new world.
06:35And then from there,
06:37we can actually go and build out every last detail.
06:39Yeah, and one of the unique challenges for Anthem
06:43is that it's a world,
06:45an experience that's meant to feel alive,
06:48like it's happening right now.
06:50And so the world is always changing,
06:53weather, the storms, seasons.
06:57And yeah, it's a really great concept to write for
07:00because what it means is it gives us the opportunity
07:03to drop into the world,
07:05almost in real time,
07:06a dramatic event that changes the world for everyone.
07:09And that could be anything from gameplay to lore.
07:13I mean, all of the moving parts in the dynamic world
07:16sound really cool,
07:17the way that they sound like they're going to come together.
07:19But even though there's obviously a lot going on,
07:21it really all comes back to your character.
07:24So let's talk about who we're going to be playing as
07:26and why we're fighting these crazy beasts.
07:29So you are a freelancer,
07:31uniquely skilled to pilot these Javelin Exo suits.
07:36And you need those suits to survive and fight in this world
07:40because the world will kill you.
07:42But on top of that,
07:44our ancient rivals, the Dominion,
07:47have discovered a way they think
07:50to weaponize the Anthem of creation.
07:52and so we need to stop them
07:56and protect the free people of Tarsus.
07:58Now, I've heard you call this power armor
08:00a couple different things.
08:01Is it a suit?
08:02Is it a javelin?
08:03Like, what's the canon term here?
08:05We call them javelins,
08:06and there are four,
08:08and they each have unique abilities.
08:10There's the ranger,
08:12and then there's the colossus,
08:15the interceptor,
08:16and finally, the storm.
08:19Yeah, so each javelin
08:21gives you a different way to play the game.
08:24But the thing to remember is,
08:25like Kathleen said,
08:26you're not your suit.
08:27You are a freelancer, a pilot,
08:29which means you can decide
08:30which suit you want to use
08:32based on your mood,
08:33based on the mission you want to engage in,
08:35or the javelins that your friends are using.
08:38So really what this allows us to do
08:41is we've built the suits
08:42to look like they're built
08:43from the materials of the world,
08:45so they each have their own unique abilities.
08:47So let's take a look at the ranger now.
08:49The ranger is a more generalized suit,
08:52able to do a lot of different things,
08:55really designed for up-close
08:57and personal combat,
08:59one-on-one for the most part.
09:01The colossus is heavier,
09:03more specialized,
09:04but able to really pack in big weapons
09:07that let them devastate the battlefield.
09:13I'm just going to say,
09:14the storm looks like it's going to be my favorite.
09:15I'm sure you guys out there
09:16are picking your face right now, too.
09:19So the javelins look awesome,
09:20but we're going to take a couple questions right now.
09:22So Casey tweeted,
09:23some of you may have seen,
09:24asking for people out there
09:26to send us your questions.
09:27And the first one is going to be from
09:29atitsweetnicole, who asks,
09:30as a player who is all about
09:32making their character their own,
09:33what kind of customization options
09:35will be available in Anthem?
09:37Yeah, so we really want players
09:38to express themselves,
09:39both through customizing the way
09:41their javelin plays,
09:42through gear and weapons,
09:44but also being able to personalize
09:46the way that it looks,
09:47both through paint jobs,
09:48as well as changing the actual geometry
09:50of the suit itself.
09:52We want teams to be able to do this as well,
09:54and because you're going to be using
09:56a javelin for a long period of time,
09:58we really want you to be able
09:59to make it your own.
10:00I'm glad you brought that up,
10:01because actually, Jay Legato
10:03has a question connected
10:04to customization.
10:06Monetization.
10:07How, when, loot box, cosmetics?
10:10Yeah, so we are going to have
10:13some cosmetics and vanity items
10:14that you'll be able to purchase,
10:15but you're always going to know
10:16what you're going to buy
10:17before you spend any money on it.
10:20So no loot boxes,
10:21no ability to pay for power.
10:23So that means no ability
10:25to spend money on gameplay advantage
10:27at all within Anthem.
10:28But even more important than that,
10:30we want to make sure
10:30that Anthem is an immersive experience
10:32that feels like it's complete
10:34from the get-go.
10:35So that means a main story,
10:37a big open world,
10:37and an ongoing service
10:39that provides new content
10:40for a long period of time,
10:42new story,
10:42new experiences for everyone.
10:45Well, I'm glad to hear
10:46that I can make my javelin pink.
10:48That's really all I wanted to know,
10:49I'm going to be honest.
10:51All right, Casey,
10:51we talked earlier about this
10:53being a co-op experience.
10:55So can you tell me a little bit
10:56about how the team gameplay
10:57in Anthem is going to work?
10:57Yeah, it really is about
10:59the fun of teaming up
11:01as a team of superheroes
11:04and working together.
11:05So you want to get
11:06a few people together
11:07of different classes.
11:08So I think here
11:09we're going to see
11:10the Colossus
11:11just hammering people
11:13on the ground in gameplay,
11:14if we can have a look at that.
11:16So heavy artillery
11:17being really strong
11:19in melee combat.
11:20And then here you've got
11:21the Ranger
11:22shooting down from above.
11:24And then they're using
11:25combos and special abilities
11:27and stuff like that.
11:27But what I love
11:28is you don't just run around,
11:30you're swimming
11:30and flying as well.
11:32So it's interesting
11:33because At The Slate Tones
11:35wants to know,
11:36how will you balance
11:37multiplayer
11:38with single player
11:39storytelling?
11:40So Anthem's really built
11:41around trying to combine
11:43the impact
11:44of having your own
11:45personal story
11:46with the fun
11:47of playing with other players.
11:48But we really want
11:49to make sure
11:50that playing with other people
11:51feels like a choice.
11:53So for people
11:53that want to just
11:54experience the story,
11:56you're going to be able
11:56to do that.
11:57Now going out
11:58into an open world
11:59like this by yourself
12:00is going to be
12:01a little bit more challenging
12:02than the team
12:03of four people.
12:04And we've really tried
12:05to balance the co-op experience
12:07to be fun
12:07even for people
12:08that don't normally
12:09engage in this kind of thing.
12:10So I really hope
12:10that everyone
12:11at least gives co-op a try.
12:13Okay, that's good to know.
12:14If you want to roll solo,
12:15you can,
12:16but it's just going to be
12:17a little bit more difficult.
12:19Well, I know you all
12:20are on the edges
12:21of your seats.
12:22How about we show
12:23a little gameplay?
12:25Yeah?
12:26You guys want that?
12:27All right.
12:28So, Kathy,
12:29you think you're going
12:29to set this up for us?
12:30I will.
12:31So, you and your friends
12:34have decided to play
12:35a mission called
12:36Scars and Villainy.
12:38The Scars have put together
12:39an acid-base super weapon,
12:41so you've got to take them out.
12:42So you start in the Strider,
12:44which is like a giant walker,
12:45and it's your forward
12:46base of operations.
12:48You have a conversation
12:49with your crew,
12:50Halleck, Faye, and Owen,
12:52and you'll hear Owen.
12:53He's going to talk us
12:54through the mission
12:55as we experience it here.
12:58And, yeah,
12:59then you just get
13:00into your javelin suit
13:01and you head out
13:02with your friends.
13:03All right.
13:04Well, thank you so much,
13:06Mark, Casey, Kathleen,
13:08for talking to me
13:08about Anthem today.
13:10We're going to go ahead
13:10and roll the gameplay now.
13:12Enjoy, everybody.
13:14Thank you.
13:29Freelancer, time to get to work.
13:32Faye said these bastards
13:33made some kind of acid.
13:35They're using it as a weapon.
13:36So, find where they're
13:38making this garbage
13:39and shut it all down.
14:08Owen, what's the plan here?
14:10Picking up loads of scars nearby.
14:12Take a look around the area,
14:14but, sir, be careful.
14:34Right.
14:35Checking out the scar cam some more.
14:39Look at all the weapons.
14:41Oh, and the turrets.
14:42Better move quickly.
14:53Oh, and the turrets.
15:28There's a shaker relic.
15:30Wait, something's odd.
15:32Get a closer look, would you?
15:35See those radiant pieces of energy?
15:37They're echoes
15:37from the Anthem of Creation.
15:40Loads of scars nearby.
15:42Be careful.
16:07Return them to the relic.
16:08You've got to silence it fast.
16:25It's gone silent.
16:26Disaster averted.
16:28Do you think we get a bonus for...
16:29Wait, something's happening.
16:34What the hell was that?
16:36I think that was whatever
16:37laid all the eggs around here.
16:39The sound came from
16:40below your position.
16:45On the plus side,
16:46this definitely counts
16:47toward hazard pay.
16:49There's a train of this acid gunk
16:50leading down.
16:51Follow it.
16:52We should find the source.
16:53We should find the source.
17:22We should find the source précision.
17:23We might dance outside.
17:33So I'm sure the question, on everyone's minds, when do we get to play?
17:38So Anthem comes out February 22nd, 2019, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
17:47So mark your calendars, everybody, fire off your tweets.
17:50Thank you so much again to Casey and the entire Bioware team.
17:53I know you guys have that awesome theater outside, so I will see you guys there.
17:57All right, see you there.
17:57Give it up for Casey Hudson, everybody.
17:59Thank you.
