00:12I've been making games for about 18 years.
00:15Most recently I was in charge of level design and all sorts of design on the new Hitman game.
00:22And this is Mutant Year Zero, Road to Eden.
00:24It's the first time we're publicly showing it.
00:27So, um, quite exciting for us.
00:30Yeah.
00:31So we'll start with a small cinematic introduction to the game world for you to watch.
00:38So you can get a bit more into the characters and into the world and then we'll start a level.
00:43Yeah.
00:44Just go into that now.
00:46I'm going to play for you.
00:48Of course the world ends.
00:50You did it to us.
00:55When the ice melted, you said nothing.
01:01When the plague spread, you did nothing.
01:07When the nukes dropped, you became nothing.
01:13At least that's what the Elder says.
01:17But cheer up.
01:19You'll be happy to know that despite your mistakes, life remains.
01:24In a small settlement high above a raging river, people are living and thriving.
01:31We call it the Ark.
01:39The Ark is humanity's last outpost, along the island in an ocean of chaos.
01:46Within these walls, we help each other create a new civilization on the ruins of the old one,
01:53with the guidance of our leader, the Elder.
01:58The Elder tells us we're safe for as long as we never leave.
02:02Because outside these walls lies the zone, the never-ending wasteland.
02:12A mass grave spanning the planet, littered with your crumbling monuments to your hubris and arrogance.
02:20What the Elder chooses not to tell us is our food and water supplies are running dangerously low.
02:25That's why he relies on Stalkers.
02:28Adventurers who leave the Ark, explore the zone, and scavenge for precious resources.
02:35Stalkers are tough enough to resist the rot,
02:38and they got the smarts and the firepower to keep the zone ghouls at bay.
02:43Stalkers have to be more than human.
02:46That's me, Mr. More Than Human, a.k.a. a mutant.
02:51I look weird to you, but hey, you look weird to me.
02:55So let's leave it at that.
02:57If the Stalkers come back from the zone alive, the Ark survives another day.
03:03If the Stalkers don't come back, the legacy of mankind will be lost forever.
03:10At least, that's what the Elder says.
03:14All right, so I'm just going to go into the game.
03:20Lee, can you explain to us where we are currently in the game?
03:24So welcome to the woods somewhere in Sweden, or the zone as our characters like to call it.
03:32And we have Selma, Dux, and Bauman, who are out on an adventure.
03:37And if you could just pause the game for a second, Mark.
03:40So here we're playing a level which is around mid-game, I would say.
03:44Yeah.
03:45It's about that.
03:46And we're here to recover a powerful generator, which can generate electricity, which we want
03:52to take back to our Ark, because that would be very useful for us.
03:56And we've learned about this generator from a level we were in previously, an old bunker
04:01complex, which had just been raided by a ghoul clan who slaughtered everybody.
04:07But we managed to find a survivor down there who told us all about the ghouls and how they
04:11killed everyone and stole the magical light-giving generator and took it up north to this ghoul
04:19camp called the Lair of the Horned Devil.
04:21So that's where we are now, where we're going to go and take the generator for ourselves.
04:26Yeah.
04:26So let's just head over there.
04:31Just going to go towards where the entrance to the camp is.
04:35This is the ghoul base.
04:38Oh, don't worry about that.
04:40We'll ignore that for now.
04:44This is Ed, the Lair of the Horned Devil.
04:48Never seen the Horned Devil, but I hear he's a handful.
04:51Yeah, a real barrel of laughs.
04:53Butchering settlements for fun.
04:55They just mess with the wrong goddamn stalkers.
04:58We can't let them slaughter another settlement.
05:01This ends right here, right now.
05:06So the game has a lot of real-time exploring.
05:10So looking for new items to help you progress.
05:16Yeah.
05:17Finding your environmental storytelling, notes you can pick up that give you hints at hidden
05:22locations and things along those lines.
05:24But for now, we're going to attack this camp and get this generator.
05:29Yeah.
05:29So let's head into the camp.
05:30I'm just going to look at the main entrance quick.
05:32Listen, we're not up to this right now.
05:36Disengage.
05:37So you can see this isn't probably the best way to get into the camp.
05:42There's a large, ominous figure stood on the bridge.
05:45No cover to get into.
05:47And there's a big light.
05:49So we're really easily spotted there.
05:51Usually a sign of possible danger is electricity, because electricity is quite a rare occurrence
05:59in the zone.
06:00So if it's there, it's probably well guarded.
06:03Yeah.
06:03We're building the game as like a tactical adventure game.
06:20So we have a small encounter here with two enemies.
06:23And as you can see around the Howl of Ghoul, this big white ring.
06:29So this is how we communicate what the enemy can hear and see.
06:33And if you get caught within the ring, then tactical combat will begin where the enemy has
06:38the first turn, which will leave you in a bad tactical position.
06:44But you can also, outside the ring, start ambush at any time where you will enter tactical
06:49combat where you get the first turn.
06:51Yeah.
06:51So I'm going to do that now.
06:53Because I want to get rid of the Howl of Ghoul.
06:55I didn't go into cover there.
06:56I need to move into cover quick.
06:57The Howl of Ghoul is quite nasty because, as you can see, she has this big trumpet on
07:02her back.
07:03So when she gets a turn, she will blow the trumpet, which is like a ghoul war cry, which
07:09will cause new ghouls to arrive to the combat scene and enter the battle.
07:12So you'll end up with reinforcements spawning into the fight and you don't really want
07:17that.
07:17So we use our stealth weapons on two of our characters, Selma and Dux, to silently take
07:24down the Howl of Ghoul without anybody noticing.
07:26So we can just get rid of her.
07:29So I'm going to bring...
07:30Oh, I brought Borm in there.
07:32That's all right.
07:32Yeah, he's got a very noisy gun.
07:34So we should probably...
07:35Yeah, I'm going to bring Dux here instead.
07:37Now I'm not putting him into cover at the moment because I'm pretty certain that these
07:40ghouls aren't much of a problem.
07:41and there's two guys here.
07:43For some reason, I know that they're there.
07:45So I'm just going to use a mutation.
07:47Of course, a game called Mutant would have some mutations in it.
07:50Now Dux has got this Moth Wings mutation, which will give me a 100% crit chance if I'm
07:55higher because I've got a high ground advantage here.
07:59So still not enough to get the Howl of Ghoul, but I must kill her with the next move.
08:04So Borm in there's got a shot in his...
08:07Now the other guy is going to hear me regardless.
08:09So I'm going to use this loud weapon.
08:10It doesn't matter to me.
08:11That's kind of okay because we've only got one ghoul to deal with.
08:13Whereas if she survived, she would call in reinforcements and we would have many ghouls
08:17to deal with.
08:18Yeah.
08:18So this guy's coming.
08:20He's a pretty small fry.
08:22And for some reason, we know he's the only one in this little area here.
08:27But normally, we'd have to be very careful because there could be other ghouls that we
08:31haven't spotted that might just join the battle.
08:33You would sneak around a lot more and see if you could see anybody else.
08:40Let's get rid of this guy.
08:41So he's got a really good position in the pistol rule because he's hiding in a high cover.
08:45So he's almost impossible to hit unless you can flank him.
08:51I'm going to have a go at him.
08:52I'm pretty certain I can get him.

08:56Oh, I haven't reloaded with this.

09:56Because we want to just go for a couple of bits before we get into the fight proper.
10:02So they're just leveled up there.
10:04Yeah, so talking about leveling up, how we handle progression in the game is a little bit different.
10:09So as you level up, your group will gain points that you can use to buy mutations.
10:17And then when you've got the mutations, they're split into three groups.
10:21We have major, minor, and passive.
10:25And as you can see, in major we have two for soma, minor we have three, and passive we have
10:30three.
10:31And at any point during real time, you can switch around which mutations are currently going to be active in
10:38tactical.
10:39Because different combinations of major, minor, and passive will be more useful against certain enemy types.
10:46And also for certain environmental things.
10:48So for example, if you're going into a bunker map, there's no point Dux taking his Mothwing mutation with him
10:54because you can't really fly anywhere.
10:55Yeah.
10:57Whereas if you're fighting, say, robotic units, you might want to change your mutations to kind of match to be
11:02more useful against robots rather than flesh enemies.
11:05Yeah, like the circuit breaker here.
11:07Yeah.
11:07And then Dux has a highbrown, sorry, Dux has a highbrown specialist passive mutation here, which we'll come to in
11:15a second.
11:16Because I think we're going to choose him to be the sniper.
11:19And I think there's a nice weapon in here.
11:20Of course, all games with adventure themes have to have chests to find items.
11:26And this is no exception.
11:27We'll just take this out here.
11:29Okay.
11:30So I'm going to nip back to the Ark and pick up some stuff before we go into the battle
11:35proper.
11:36So let's do that now.
11:39So where do we do that to the world map?
11:42Let's head to the Ark.
11:43So the Ark is the home for the mutants.
11:45It's where they all live.
11:46And it's the only safe place that they know in the zone.
11:50It's a bit of a weird place as the Ark as well because it's run by this guy called the
11:54Elder.
11:56And he's the only person in the whole Ark who is not mutated at all.
12:00He's completely human.
12:01He's also quite old.
12:03And he seems to know quite a lot about the zone, more than what you would think he should know.
12:08So there's some exploring to do in the game to figure out the truth about what's really been going on.
12:15But we won't spoil that for anyone.
12:18We'll leave there until another time.
12:21Spoil it another time.
12:22We'll spoil it another time, yeah.
12:25Delta's workshop.
12:26This is in the Ark.
12:27This is the home of the mutants.
12:29Let's leave you to explain.
12:30There's a workshop here run by Delta.
12:32You can bring weapons to her and upgrade them and modify them.
12:36And we want it to be a little bit more interesting with the upgrades and modifying you can do to
12:40your weapons.
12:41So, of course, we have modifiers and upgrades that allow you to get a better chance to hit or a
12:47better range and things like that.
12:49But we also have a lot of modifiers for fun things like adding fire to your bullets so that when
12:56you fire a shot,
12:57you can do damage over time by adding fire to an enemy or a modification for a gun which allows
13:02for knockback.
13:03So when you shoot an enemy, they'll be knocked back a couple of tiles so they can be knocked off
13:07high places or into water and things like that.
13:10And we love playing around with things like that because it's a bit more interesting.
13:14Yeah.
13:14And then we've got Prips Bar.
13:17Now, all adventure games require some sort of tavern or bar.
13:22Otherwise, we have no really good way of getting quests or information assigned to us.
13:28So, Prips is an interesting character.
13:30He owns the bar.
13:31And he also has this side business of dealing in what we call artifacts.
13:37And artifacts are items you can find out in the zone which are stuff from our time which is still
13:43working.
13:44This could be anything from an old beer fridge to a radio or a lawnmower.
13:49All sorts of stuff.
13:49Old hot computer, whatever.
13:51Whatever you can find in the zone that still works.
13:53You bring it to Prips.
13:55And then he will exchange it for what we call a group bonus.
13:58He's quite well connected in the arc.
14:00So you bring him artifacts and he can do you some favors.
14:04And that's presented like a tree for your group.
14:07And you can progress through that and do everything from upgrade grenade damage to upgrade the amount of health packs
14:15you're allowed to have.
14:16Or equipment slots or all these big bonuses that affect the entire group.
14:22So then, sorry, Elder's room.
14:25We just explained who the Elder is.
14:27You can go and visit him and he explains more about the world as you go through the game.
14:32Now we're going to Iridia's market.
14:33Now Iridia, she used to be the top of the stalkers in the arc.
14:37Now she's got old and she's got sick because of the zone, the toxic world around her.
14:43It has a zone rod and the zone rod has basically made us, sorry, made her sick.
14:49So she now runs the store of the arc.
14:52I'm going to buy a couple of things.
14:53I'm going to buy this because it's a bit of a cheat weapon that we can use if we get
14:56into trouble.
14:57Because the game is quite deterministic.
14:59So if we have a 75% hit chance and we go for it, it's still that 25% we
15:03might get into trouble.
15:05Dev team's had a few problems when we've been trying to demo it because we're not 100% ready for
15:11the outcome of some of the battles.
15:12because it takes us by surprise in a good way.
15:17You can buy my heart as well, mate.
15:18I'm going to buy it.
15:19Yeah, I'm going to buy the Aristo Helm.
15:21Yeah, it's because all games like they need a set of hats.
15:25I guess that's the norm nowadays.
15:27I'm also going to buy another grenade because Selma used a grenade up.
15:29So I'm going to buy another one.
15:32All right, let's go back to the arc.
15:33and then let's leave the arc and go to the camp.
15:38Now you might have noticed that it's called the Lair of the Horned Devil.
15:41But in the old days, in the ancient times, our time basically, it used to be a kid's holiday camp.
15:48And they call it the Horned Devil because there's a big cartoon picture of a moose.
15:53and they don't know what that is.
15:55They think it is a demon of some kind.
15:57Yeah, we like to play around with this in the game.
15:59The stalkers finding stuff from the old days and misunderstanding what it is or what it was for.
16:06I think I like the radio artifact, where it's like an old ghetto blaster and they get a bit scared
16:12of it because I think it's a bomb because it's called the boombox.
16:15Yeah, we like to play around with those things.
16:18Come on, guys.
16:19Just trying to bring them along.
16:21So, yeah, a little bit of a save load bug here.
16:24Normally, we would resume a little bit closer to where we were before when we had left the map.
16:30It gives us some time to talk to me.
16:32Of course, in the zone, you can find, like, we've got the hat.
16:35We bought from the shop.
16:36But out in the zone, you can find all sorts of different outfits and hats, which will give you various
16:40passive bonuses, which will help you in the tactical game.
16:44I'm going to equip those now, I think.
16:45I just also want to say about the persistence.
16:47You can see that the enemies are no longer there.
16:51I think also the environment should be still destroyed.
16:53But that's not working in this demo.
16:56I'm just going to go into the inventory now.
16:58Oh, this is probably in the map.
17:00I've just gone into the shortcuts to these, you see.
17:03Inventory.
17:03I'm going to give Selma that grenade.

17:52You can actually split them up at any time in real-time mode and position them where you want.
17:58You can also hide them and prepare them for ambushing an enemy.
18:05There's a straggler there of the ghoul camp.
18:07So, what we want to do is we want to position ourselves in a place that will allow us to
18:13take him out silently.
18:14And without bringing the rest of the camp into the battle.
18:17We want to kind of have the advantage by positioning our characters properly.
18:21So, positioning and hiding is super important when you come to an encounter because you really want to scope around
18:26and find enemies on their own that you can take down silently without anyone noticing.
18:31But you also want to find tactical positions which are super strong for you.
18:36It could be some high ground or some really good cover that you want to leave a character in so
18:40that when you do do the ambush of the main encounter, the big, big fight, you're in a really good
18:44position.
18:45And you'll often find the stragglers are sort of quite close to somewhere that you'll get a good advice.
18:50So, you can get rid of the guards.
18:51You can go in and infiltrate.
18:53Okay, I'm just going to explain what I've done.
18:56So, I put the two guys with the stealth weapons at the front.
18:58Bormin I've left behind at the back because he's only got loud weapons equipped at the moment.
19:02So, he can just sit and read a book or eat a cake or whatever he wants to do.
19:06Okay, so I'm ready to fight now.
19:09So, let's use Dux.
19:11He's got a silent crossbow.
19:15So, that should do a good deal of damage to that guy.
19:18And then Selma, she's got a silenced pistol.
19:21So, I should get a good chance of just getting rid of this guy without any problems.
19:27Nice.
19:28Nicely done, mate.
19:30So, let's just bring everybody back.
19:36See what else we've got?
19:37Another straggler there.
19:40Let's just mow him down.
19:42But quietly.
19:43I don't want to bring anybody else into the battle.

19:51So, let's use Selma with her silenced pistol.

20:05And it was hard work.

20:09We also have a bit of a plan I want to formulate.
20:11Like Lee said, we want to position the characters in places that give us the best advantage.
20:16So, I'm taking Duck who's now designated a sniper because of his abilities and equipment.
20:23Somewhere nice and high.
20:25This van we passed just a little bit earlier.
20:28This is a good place.
20:29Good overview of the camp.
20:32Then I'm going to get Selma.
20:35And she's got a really big plasma weapon on her back.
20:38So, what I can do with her is I'm going to put her in a position where she can support
20:42the others.
20:43So, I'm going to put her here.
20:45And in Bormin, I have a special plan for him.
20:47Do you remember that there was two guys talking about a large metal man or a metal man?
20:55Well, yeah, let's have a little look.
20:58Maybe in the biggest building there could be something large.
21:01We'll see.

21:05So, now we know why the ghouls wanted the generator.
21:08To try and power up an ancient war machine that they found.
21:11And early on in the game we found the instruction manual for this robot.
21:15Which told us if we put disc A in drive B, the robot's programming will be reset.
21:22And it will attack anything.
21:25So, that's what we'll do.
21:28Because it's going to be much, much better for us if the robot is attacking the ghouls and us.
21:33Rather than he's just attacking us on his own.
21:36Yeah, we want to try and get the ghouls in between us and him.
21:39So, they chip away at each other.
21:42And we get a better chance.
21:43Bring this giant to life.

22:11Do you remember the big guy that we saw on the bridge?
22:14Well, he's there.
22:15And Bormin, he has a stone skin ability at the moment.
22:21Which we can use to take the shots of the enemies and drive away from the other two guys.
22:25So, I've got Bormin here ready to be like a tank and draw enemy fire.
22:30Dux here is a high ground position ready for sniping.
22:33And then we've got Selma here.
22:35And she'll come in really useful with overwatch or whatever she needs to do to support the other two.
22:40So, we haven't got everybody in the same spot.
22:42Otherwise, we're going to be in a lot of trouble.
22:45Okay, so I'm going to start now.
22:48Let's activate Bormin.
22:49His ranged weapon probably hasn't got enough range to hit these guys.
22:52But shall we just talk about these?
22:53Yeah, about the ghouls really quickly that we have here.
22:55So, we have the Rifle Ghoul.
22:57They like to keep a medium kind of distance and take shots at you.
23:01They can hit quite hard with their rifles.
23:03So, they can be a bit dangerous.
23:05Then we have the Heavy Ghoul.
23:06The most dangerous ghoul of all.
23:08So, he's just going to smash through covers and hunt you down relentlessly.
23:13And he has a special attack where he can knock you down for a couple of turns.
23:17So, you'll be down unconscious.
23:19Which is quite nasty in this type of game.
23:22Yeah, because the enemies can take pot shots at you when you're down.
23:25And then we have the Pyro Ghoul, right?
23:27Yeah, the Pyro Ghoul, he just really loves fire.
23:31So, he's got this massive sack of Molotov cocktails that he's just going to continually keep throwing at you.
23:37Which is really bad for us because fire can do damage over time.
23:42I'm just going to give Borwin his Stone Skin ability.
23:44This will make him immune to damage one shot.
23:46He still can get knocked over, but still, he'll not get any damage.
23:50And in the distance, we have the Grey One.
23:52Can we see Grey One?
23:53Yeah.
23:54Yeah.
23:54So, she's the leader of this particular ghoul clan.
23:57She has a really big energy weapon on her back.
24:00She'll try to keep her distance and pick you off when you're not paying attention.
24:04She will kill you if she gets her sights on you.
24:09So, I can't hit anybody with my ranged weapons with Borwin.
24:12But what I'm going to do, I'm going to chuck a grenade over here to do a few things.
24:15I want to hurt the Pyro Ghoul, of course.
24:17I don't want him to be happy.
24:19I want to hurt him.
24:20I want to draw enemies to Borwin so they know he's there.
24:24And I also want to remove any kind of cover he's got to drive him down a little bit.
24:28So, let's have a little look.
24:30This is the normal explosive grenade, wasn't it?
24:32Yeah.
24:33Yeah.
24:33That's good.
24:35Okay.
24:36So, Dux activate him.
24:38Swap to the State Switcher like a handheld rail gun.
24:43Pathetic chance on the Pyro Ghoul.
24:44Grey one, not so bad, but guaranteed damage on the Rifle Ghoul.

26:22We need to start chipping him down because he's going to be, he's going to be causing chaos otherwise.
