00:00joining us on the make it right call call right hotline cameron justice uh from news five cam
00:06good morning uh thanks so much for taking time on your sunday to uh to spend a little with us
00:12of course listen it's a good sunday the mac championships has been crowned we're looking
00:19at maybe a two-team bid in the mac for the first time since 99 and of course we've got
00:26all the
00:26other sports news you'll yeah okay i'm gonna warn you right now nick's been a hater all morning
00:30um yeah he has there's no hating that's going on hang on michael michael is the arbiter of the show
00:39here okay michael has nick just been a foul mood all morning long yes or no specifically about
00:47akron as well yes i'm just laying out the facts here that this is three straight trips to the ncaa
00:54tournament for your akron zips and the pressure's starting to mount to get that first win in march
01:00madness is all i'm saying is that the zips are facing a lot of pressure here and it would feel
01:05like a big letdown for the mac if they don't get that first win this coming week yeah you know
01:11what
01:11and i agree with that i think it is time that akron finally get that win in the tournament but
01:16hear me out if your team won it in they had to win the mac championship and for three years
01:22they didn't
01:23sorry nick ah yes you tell them cam all right let's uh let's uh let's get serious here because
01:30you know that's all we are here on the sunday show is 100 serious uh i i almost said that
01:35with a
01:35straight face almost uh cam busy week for the browns uh andrew barry said at the combine uh wasn't
01:42expecting to be too busy or hyperactive it was the word that barry had used i wouldn't say they were
01:47hyperactive but they did spend some money on their offensive line just how would you uh grade out
01:53what barry was able to accomplish in rebuilding what i believe to be four of those five spots up
02:00front uh grade wise it's hard to give a a letter because i actually was just having this conversation
02:06i think that andrew barry did a a really good job of focusing on what was important which was the
02:11trenches right especially the offensive line so if i had to give a grade i'd give a high grade for
02:17for the focus but as we know like the offensive line it's it's not a it's not a sexy position
02:22it's not it's it's just it's not flashy these moves aren't going to get you high grades from like
02:27you know national of all these guys that are signed but i think i really appreciate the the effort to
02:33rebuild what was a decimated offensive line through free agency you had question marks it's old
02:38atonio you knew that wyatt teller was gone you know jack conklin was gone and and all of these
02:44different moves you have to figure out ethan posick right and so to get not only the amount
02:50of bodies that you are looking for early and they're going to keep adding but to to add so many
02:55of that in the trade and free agency but also i really like that they've gotten guys that are so
03:02versatile and you can move them around so it kind of answers different questions on your line depending
03:08on the need it allows you to be more free in we'll say the draft to get somebody the best
03:15talent
03:15on the line and not just directly a guard directly a tackle we because we need this i think the
03:22ability
03:23for these guys zion and elton to to kind of be all over i think that's huge for what free
03:32agency has
03:32looked like for the browns i think that gives them a higher grade because they've gotten guys that
03:37you can kind of plug and play wherever you may need it based on how the rest of this offseason
03:43shapes out but based on how the draft shapes out so i would give a higher grade i don't know
03:48but i'd
03:48give a letter grade because it's just you know it's it's hard to tell especially with an offensive line
03:52until they're there until you see how cohesive they are until you see how you know the new o-line
03:59warhop is going to to get them together because there was high expectations for the line you know the
04:04past couple years and it's kind of gone downhill a little bit so you got to get it back up
04:08so
04:09i'll wait to grade but i i like the efforts that have been made uh joel batonio they the contract
04:16voided browns charge 23 and a half million on the salary cap uh i kind of think he's not coming
04:23back
04:23where do you think uh joel batonio uh what's going to happen with him uh you know what i have
04:30that
04:30feeling too and it's only because i think that last year i had the feeling i didn't i was surprised
04:36that he opted to come back for another year last year i thought he might choose to retire you know
04:41you you can win three games and still doesn't look like it looks like there might be an uphill climb
04:49to turn things around after a three-win season and i was surprised that joel came back last
04:54off season and then didn't choose to retire so i feel like it does trend that way obviously has the
05:00option of either retiring which i think is probably heavy on his mind but there's also the opportunity
05:07for him as a free agent to sign with another team and go to a a team that may contend
05:13uh have a stronger
05:14chance of contending and i that to me feels less like joel batonio i wouldn't know i don't think
05:20anyone would blame him for it but you know being so close to joe thomas and kind of being shaped
05:26by
05:26him that's why to me it feels like less likely that he does that but that nothing is precluding him
05:33from doing it so as the as the leaks go on it feels more and more like we're trending towards
05:40a
05:40retirement but it's i know it's not an easy decision and it's not as if joel doesn't have
05:46anything left to give it's just is is it worth the toll it's a toll on the body it's a
05:53toll
05:53on the knees on the back and we've seen him deal with injuries and he's talked about wanting to
05:58be able to move and play with his kids and so it's it's just something i think that
06:05maybe as this offseason shapes out just both with the browns and around the league like is this
06:12is this a year that makes sense for joel batonio to play in is this a year in which something
06:17special
06:18could happen because if not you're kind of just taking a toll on the body and that's why it feels
06:23maybe like as as time goes on that realization may be sinking in but i was surprised again like i
06:31said
06:32that he that he played last year and kudos to him for for toughing it out and you know just
06:37giving
06:37his all every single time he's out on that field cam if you had to put your prediction hat on
06:44for
06:44what andrew barry might do next what do you think is to come for the cleveland browns is the first
06:51wave
06:52of free agency i feel like it's kind of fair to say is calm down a little bit what do
06:56you think ab
06:56has left to do this offseason are we talking we're not talking free agency or we're talking draft
07:02yeah like before before we get too heavy into the draft stuff yeah okay well you know i i wouldn't
07:09be mad because i i think the ultimate goal here is to get a young receiver in the draft i
07:15wouldn't be
07:15mad at bringing in a veteran too um and obviously so that that to me is maybe something that i
07:23would
07:23look at i also i think the obvious is a quarterback a veteran quarterback because they're going to they're
07:29going to have another one but whether whether they're a guy that may like have the chance to
07:35to start or not there will be a fourth quarterback on this roster i think that drafting a quarterback
07:42adds too much chaos into the room when you have you know the uncertainty of what deshaun will be
07:49deshaun watson will be and and but there's still this this glimmer of hope for them that maybe
07:55with todd munkin and this new staff that they can get some more out of him now that you know
08:01he's
08:01recovering from that achilles uh and then obviously shador sanders going into a second year can he
08:08continue to be developed can he take a leap that makes him uh a strong starter in the nfl that's
08:15something that also the addition of todd munkin as a developmental coach is that's that's the goal but
08:21that said they've said that they like some of the things they saw out of dylan gabriel too so we're
08:26not going to forget him but they will have four quarterbacks at camp and so i think to add a
08:33rookie
08:34and and put that development workload on with with two second year guys and a guy that's coming back
08:41from injury that just hasn't been the same for years to add a rookie into the mix is adding a
08:46lot
08:46of chaos and uncertainty where if you add a veteran i think that's a little bit more stability so
08:53a receiver would be nice but a quarterback will be that is without certain something that they will
09:00have to do and i just don't think it happens in the draft so my prediction is some veteran
09:06quarterback signing with the team for at the very least their fourth camp arm uh the browns seem to be
09:16getting the word out that deshaun watson is going to get a crack at this thing uh this offseason cam
09:21and we're talking with cameron justice news 5 on the make it right call call right hotline um
09:26i'm a little worried about that but my opinion don't matter it's what the organization thinks and
09:31and and and feels um do you think this is going to come down to deshaun v shadour in camp
09:40i i do i think that i think there is a lot of it's it's a lot of hope right
09:46now within within
09:47the organization i think there's some beliefs just and it's nothing else not because of a sample size
09:53not because of anything other than this this staff todd monk and staff was was built with the idea of
10:01development and that's truly what it is and so we when we think about that it's it's clear it's easy
10:07to
10:07just say you know okay well that means you know shadour sanders that means quinchon judkins and
10:14carson swessinger mason graham and all these young guys that are going to find themselves and it means
10:18what you obviously assume will be a very big and hopefully impactful rookie class but it goes beyond
10:26that because you do have deshaun watson on the roster you have him on the books and it didn't work
10:32out and so if you get a guy that a head coach that you think is really strong at developing
10:37it's not
10:38just young guys maybe he can develop and kind of work out some of these issues that deshaun watson
10:43has had in cleveland if deshaun watson's healthy uh and as he continues that rehab from the achilles
10:48it can't be certain that he's going to be healthy and he had the shoulder he had the achilles and
10:53then
10:53he re-tore the achilles uh and so all those setbacks it's hard to imagine um of a fully healthy
11:02deshaun
11:02watson and when he was healthy he did not play well for the browns but i think there is that
11:07hope okay
11:08with this staff if he's healthy maybe this is what the steps that are needed this is this is the
11:16staff
11:17that is needed to develop more out of him because anybody not just a young guy can be developed
11:21you can be a veteran and be developed so i think that is driving the hope uh within the organization
11:27but there's also hope that chador sanders can take a step and and and really elevate his game and
11:32so i think it does come down between those two and then whoever they add maybe that throws a little
11:38wrinkle in the plan uh and you know dylan gabriel is on this team right now so as long as
11:44he's on the
11:45team he'll have that shot to go out there but i think it is it is very one two right
11:50now for the
11:51three quarterbacks as it stands is is deshaun watson going to be healthy enough and can they
11:55see things from him that they haven't seen since they traded for him with this new staff and can
12:03they get chador sanders into a different position where he's taking care of the ball better he's a
12:11playmaker they know what they love that they just want to see that development so can they get him to
12:15that level and i think that's the the strength of this staff so we'll see what happens with those two
12:20but i do think it's i think it's right now it's one of their jobs to lose kim you had
12:25an opportunity
12:26to sit down with miles garrett here uh i watched it uh great job by you um every time i
12:32go on uh one
12:34of our sister stations across the country i'm always asked the odds of them being able to trade for miles
12:39garrett uh and i tell them the browns have a better chance of winning the super bowl this year than
12:44that happening uh just uh what was your biggest takeaway from that conversation you had uh with
12:51miles and just where he's at in his career i think that it truly because this is this was about
12:59legacy it was about the things that have happened last year and just how how it has impacted him and
13:04and how it has shaped you know how he views himself and what's next and his goals and it i
13:11knew the answer
13:12was going to be when i asked what's next for for miles garrett i knew the answer was going to
13:15be
13:15super bowl because that has been on the top of his list now for he won dpoi he got that
13:22he really
13:23wanted a super bowl that's what caused the the trade request that was not fulfilled was the desire to
13:33continue to build the legacy and do the things that he wants to do to to solidify himself as
13:39the greatest to do it and and he wants to go we know he's going to be in the hall
13:45of fame we know
13:45that he wants to be in the hall of fame with a super bowl next to his name and so
13:50for me the biggest
13:51takeaway is just you know that he's he's in a position right now on a team that there was there
13:58was that hope for you know you had the playoffs and then 2023 had two playoff trips in this in
14:04that
14:04stretch with kevin sofanski there's like those glimmers of this thing is getting turned around
14:09and then for it to kind of spiral so hard and so fast has been really difficult and so i
14:16think that
14:16reality of like being close to being a contender being close to you know considering yourself as a
14:22team that can get through the playoff get to the playoff and get through the playoff was there it
14:26was starting to grow and then to have that light snuffed out it's tough uh but i the patience
14:32in the conversation of you know what what's next would it mean more in cleveland he's taking it
14:39day by day i think that he's trying to get out of his own head with it right like he's
14:44he's he's
14:45controlling what he can control which is how can he be the best player on the football field how can
14:51he
14:52impact the game to help create wins it's a lot harder on the defensive side uh to do as one
15:00player
15:00than it is on the offense so that's got to be the thing that takes shape and and the defense
15:05has to
15:06keep playing strong but i think miles garrett's in a position right now where that is just the most
15:12important thing in terms of his career he wants that more than anything he's he's proven to himself
15:19i think that like every goal that he can set he he sets for himself he can do it he
15:24wanted he wanted
15:25that dpo why he got it twice he wanted the sack record he got it so this is this is
15:30next so we'll
15:31see what what the browns are able to do uh and you know it would be a shame i think
15:37to have a career
15:39if i was a player i would be disappointed too if i had an illustrious career but couldn't get
15:44that ultimate team goal so every everything that he does from here on out will be based on
15:51trying to get that done and he said he it would mean way more to do it in cleveland the
15:58team that
15:59took him took a chance on him that he grew with that he became who he is uh on the
16:06team so we just
16:08gotta gotta hope for everyone's sake in cleveland for for the players for the organization for the
16:13fans that that can get done uh as a cleveland brown before his time uh here is done yeah one
16:19before we go
16:20that's that's what every that's what every browns fan says uh millions of uh not only northeast
