00:00An emotional post-match news conference where the embattled Australian captain Kim Hughes relinquished the much-cherished captaincy.
00:08And after much speculation, Alan Border was selected to lead Australia into the third test at the picturesque Adelaide Oval.
00:16Australia's keeper Wayne Phillips was ruled out through injury.
00:20He was replaced by Steve Rickson, while the West Indies were forced to replace the injured Michael Holding with young Roger Harper.
00:26At Christmas, just a few weeks away, a new skipper and a beautiful ground with a wicket full of runs.
00:33And Australia's supporters looking for an impressive showing in the third test.
00:37We'll pick up play now with the first ball of the game.
00:40Geoffrey Lawson is the bowler. Greenwich is taking strike.
00:43Your commentators, Tony Gregg and Frank Tyson.
00:51And straight away, a short delivery there from Lawson.
00:54And very confidently wrapped away down to the square leg boundary for fall by Greenwich.
00:59Hogg now having a good look at the field and walking across the border.
01:05I think he might want a little bit of a change.
01:06And it is that gully area that he's particularly interested in.
01:11He's moving Hughes just a little bit finer there.
01:14It's a man down on the boundary on the hook as well in case one of these two hooks the ball in the air.
01:18Oh, and he's on. It's a victory.
01:22Victory to Hogg in that gully position.
01:24Hughes the catcher.
01:25What a great breakthrough this is for the Australians.
01:28Straight away, Hogg striking.
01:30And Desmond Haynes out to court in the gully.
01:34It certainly is a great breakthrough.
01:35And some pretty sensible field placement there.
01:38Because previously we've seen the Australian slipstand very fine.
01:41This time they're well positioned.
01:42That gully very square.
01:44The ball moving away slightly.
01:46A flashing drive, a thick edge, a good catch above the head.
01:49And that's an enormous blow for Australia.
01:53Lawson to Richardson.
01:59All caught.
02:01The Australian captain takes the catch.
02:08Bad hand and all.
02:10And that is a good breakthrough.
02:12Lawson deserved that.
02:13Ritchie Richardson, the man gone.
02:18Just a good outswing bowling from Rodney Hogg this morning.
02:21Coming from the same end that Terry Alderman is at now.
02:29Terry Alderman looking at his hands.
02:32Greenwich tried to jam it into the ground.
02:34But didn't quite get over it enough.
02:35That's a good shot from Greenwich.
02:42He's hit that right in the middle.
02:45And way back.
02:47In fact it's gone very close to hitting the Benson & Hedges International Cricketer of the Year award sign.
02:53And must have gone very, very close to putting a dent in the Nissan 300 ZX.
03:05Bob Holland, the leg spinner, bowls to Greenwich.
03:07And some very good shots now.
03:15Greenwich looks as though he's just about to cut loose.
03:17A smashing six off Alderman, four off Holland, and the 100 comes up.
03:25Holland to Larry Gomes.
03:32But he won't turn that one because it didn't bounce.
03:35And Gomes very quick to seize upon that bad ball and smash it away through the mid-wicket area.
03:41And he does now too.
03:47Another short delivery and off the back foot for the second consecutive four.
03:51So Gomes really starting to go pretty well now.
03:54The West Indies Partnership now pushing on past the 100 mark.
03:59Vessels to Greenwich.
04:02It's gone for him and he's hit him straight down the ground for four.
04:05That's the over.
04:11It's two for one, five, seven.
04:15It's Larry Gomes now, the left-hander.
04:18And he's facing Lawson.
04:20It's gone, yes.
04:22Caught behind.
04:23A great breakthrough by Geoffrey Lawson.
04:26And Gomes goes on 60.
04:28That's just what Australia needed.
04:30And a fine piece of work.
04:31A bit of movement off the scene.
04:32And Steve Rickson takes his first catch in the series.
04:37Geoff Lawson comes in now to Viv Richards.
04:40He just looks a little on edge at the moment to me.
04:45And he's gone.
04:47Yes, he's out for that.
04:48Clearly caught by Steve Rickson.
04:50A beautiful piece of volume.
04:51What a catch.
04:52A classic catch by Steve Rickson.
04:54And a great breakthrough by Australia.
04:56Beautifully bowled.
04:57The new batsman to the crease.
04:58He got an edge and Rickson did the rest.
05:00The beauty and riches departs with that scoring.
05:05Alderman also.
05:06Very economic.
05:07Holland know we'll get for 47.
05:08The most expensive.
05:09And Vessels know we'll get for 13.
05:15He's hit that pretty well.
05:17It's gone down.
05:18It's taken.
05:19He's outcourt.
05:19There it goes.
05:21Caught.
05:21Five runs short of what would have been his first test entry in Australia.
05:29Rodney Hogg hits the catch.
05:31Lawson strikes the game.
05:33And a disappointed Greenwich goes on.
05:36Lawson comes in now to ball to Dujon.
05:41He's put it down.
05:42First ball.
05:46And the Australian catching continues to be sieve-like.
05:52Hogg to Dujon.
05:56It's a fine shot from Dujon.
05:59Marvellous timer of the ball.
06:01That absolutely rattled into the pickets.
06:03Oh, lovely shot.
06:11Full toss, but lovely shot.
06:14Outside the off stump, in the slot.
06:16Dujon, a beautiful driver through the offside.
06:18And just stroked it from the middle of the bat.
06:21And it raced through the offside field for four.
06:24Clive Lloyd clipsing Rowan Kenhigh.
06:2816.94.
06:29And Ian Chappell, 15.45.
06:33Gets that one and that's four.
06:36Beautifully played.
06:37Just a fraction short.
06:39Big man gave himself some room and hammered it past point.
06:44Oh, that's up in the air.
06:46And the trap's been set.
06:47And he's going to go.
06:47Oh, he's got it.
06:48I can't believe it.
06:50That was the greatest dolly of all time.
06:53And have a look at Lawson.
06:54The trap was set Dutchie Holland 15 to 20 yards in.
06:59And that was hit straight down his throat and he dropped it.
07:03Close, very close.
07:08Yes, he's gone.
07:09Played back and across.
07:10And Jeff Lawson picks up his fifth with it.
07:12Well bowled.
07:13The breakthrough that the Australians so badly needed.
07:16Beautifully bowled.
07:18And the findings from Dujon comes to an end.
07:20A good piece of bow.
07:21Great shot.
07:30Great shot.
07:34He's waited a long time for that one.
07:36And at long last, Jeffrey Lawson has got through.
07:50And Clive Lloyd's splendid innings comes to an end.
07:52Out the 78.
07:53Played on.
07:55May even have been via pad.
07:56Inside edge onto pad and then stump.
07:58But just reward for Jeffrey Lawson.
08:03Clive Lloyd out.
08:04Bowl Lawson 78.
08:13Lawson deserves it.
08:16A good bouncer.
08:18Marshall's gone.
08:19He'll remember it.
08:20When he gets out there to the dressing room.
08:22And he'll start thinking about it from that moment.
08:26Until the time he gets the ball in his hand.
08:27But it was a good bouncer.
08:28Oh, well bowled.
08:39And a big appeal there for LBW.
08:40He's gone.
08:41Harper doesn't like it.
08:42Lawson up in the air.
08:44As were the men behind the wicket.
08:46And Lawson has struck again.
08:49Eight wickets now.
08:50These are his best bowling figures.
08:51Oh, he smashed that down towards Squareleg.
08:59Is he gone?
08:59Oh, he's dropped it.
09:00Another one down.
09:03Well, it's a real case of butterfingers.
09:06Kim Hughes down there a deep mid wicket.
09:09The ball went straight to him.
09:11And he dropped it.
09:14And there's another grab at it.
09:15But failed again.
09:19And he's bowled in.
09:21That was right up in the block hole there.
09:25And Courtney Walsh out bowled.
09:28And so Holland gets himself a wicket.
09:32The West Indian card, 356 all out.
09:35With Lloyd 78 and Dujon 77.
09:38Their partnership, 150 in 243 minutes.
09:43And the rest of them, no double figure scores.
09:45356 all out.
09:47And the bowling figures, Hogg one for 75 and Alderman none for 38.
09:50Holland took the last wicket at a cost of 109 from 30.2 overs.
09:55And Geoffrey Lawson, 40 overs, 7 maidens, 8 for 112.
10:00And after lunch today, he took 4 for 27.
10:03Here's the first ball now of the Australian innings, chasing the 356 of the West Indies.
10:08Your commentators, Tony Gregg and Frank Tyson.
10:11And the Australians off the mark straight away.
10:16Wood whipping that one in front of a square on the leg side.
10:21And a big cheer from this good crowd.
10:22And a catch there for Geoffrey Dujon.
10:29And once again, Dyson has fallen to a catch, playing a shot just outside the off stump.
10:36That really was a poor shot from John Dyson.
10:38Good shot beating Larry Gomes a point.
10:46And that would have to go down as Kepler Vessels' favourite shot.
10:49Beautiful shot.
10:59He leads to cover there.
11:01Nice placement again by Kepler Vessels.
11:04That ball a little short and giving him a little time.
11:07And he really made the most of it.
11:09Courtney Walsh very tall and getting a lot of bounce.
11:11Bowls to Kepler Vessels.
11:13And Vessels is hit.
11:17That's hurt him.
11:18And no ball really lifted more than he expected.
11:21And cracked him a very painful blow indeed on that right forearm.
11:26Here it is.
11:28Vessels, it's no ball.
11:31And he just stood his ground right on the elbow.
11:33And my word, I think he's in trouble.
11:40Oh, it's up in the air.
11:41Could be out.
11:42Richards is under it.
11:44Yes.
11:45Strange shot from Mann who's job is to survive.
11:48Try to whip him away over square leg.
11:50And Steve Ritchie is out without scoring.
11:56He's gone.
11:57He's dropped.
11:57Whipping Ritchie at the second step.
11:59He's slashed at it.
12:00He got it with both hands.
12:01He was flying to his left.
12:03Hipped the hands and fell out.
12:05And a let off for Brian Wood.
12:06And what a relief for Australia.
12:08Joel Garner, the bowler.
12:16He's gone.
12:17Yes, he's out.
12:18First ball.
12:19What?
12:19And the runabout for Kim Hughes and Australia continues.
12:25A beautiful piece of bowling.
12:26But what a superb catch.
12:28Everybody hoping for Kim Hughes to succeed.
12:30He's failed.
12:31And Australia in real trouble at three for 91.
12:33He's settled for the business of dropping it in short, bowling fast, and getting it up around
12:39about the rib cage.
12:40And that's dropped by Lloyd at first slip.
12:46What a comfortable catch to Lloyd.
12:49So the West Indies, who have caught everything that has come their way in the slips area so far in the series,
12:57have now put down two comfortable ones, and you couldn't get an easier slip catch than that.
13:02There's a little bit of roughness, which Harper will be trying to clip.
13:08It's that area.
13:10It's the area right there.
13:13It's that little bit, a little closer to the off stump.
13:22He's giving him inside edge onto the pad.
13:25Wood doesn't look very happy about it.
13:26What a good catch coming forward there, Greenwich scooping that one up, and Wood out to the offspin of Harper.
13:35It's only 12, but it's been very composed and confident.
13:47Edge and well taken by Dujon.
13:50Umpire Crafter is checking with the umpire at square leg.
13:52Mel Johnson signals that, yes, the ball has carried through to Dujon.
13:58And by Jove, he doesn't miss too much.
14:00He's missed a stumping, but when it comes to catches off the quickies, he grabs them all.
14:05Marshall to Alan Bordeaux.
14:11That's well taken by Joel Garner.
14:13The tall man has got him in the gully.
14:16Bordeaux attempting to cut away.
14:18And Marshall is the man who's done the damage for the West Indies again.
14:22Picking up both Boone and Alan Bordeaux.
14:32Nice shot.
14:35Through the covers.
14:38And another boundary.
14:40Kepler Vessels.
14:41Courtney Walsh is the bowler.
14:42Lawson taking strike.
14:43Oh, he smashed that high and wide.
14:48Would it be out?
14:49He's got underneath it.
14:51Logie.
14:51He's dropped it.
14:52I don't believe it.
14:55It's got to be catching.
14:57Well, now, that did go miles up in the air.
14:59And he was running around underneath it down there and looked to have it covered, but he dropped it.
15:13And he's gone.
15:14He's out.
15:14Caught behind.
15:15A huge nick there.
15:17Lawson standing his ground.
15:18But that is a big edge and taken beautifully by Dujon.
15:23Coming to jump high in the air.
15:31And that's how it pushed it straight into Desmond Haynes' hands at short leg.
15:36Short ball.
15:36Jumping back.
15:37Pushing it into the short leg fielder's hands.
15:39Very simple dismissal.
15:43Bob Holland just jumping back.
15:46Marshall off the shorter run.
15:51Oh, he smashed it.
15:53And a huge crowd.
15:55He's not going to waste any time.
15:58Just short of the length.
15:59Vessel smashing it to extra cover for four.
16:04Staying around the wicket, Marshall.
16:07Oh, good shot again.
16:08Beautiful drive.
16:08Straight down the ground.
16:10Straight past the bowler.
16:11The outfield pretty quick.
16:12The ball rolling down towards the boundary there.
16:14They may be able to run for.
16:19Come back for the fourth and so.
16:21That takes him now to 98.
16:24And he keeps the strike.
16:28Marshall on his way to him.
16:30Oh, he's bowled him.
16:31He's dragged it back onto the stumps.
16:33And Marshall runs down the wicket with his arms in the air.
16:37And what a terrible disappointment that is.
16:40The end of a great inning.
16:41Kepler Vessels out bowled.
16:45Bowled by Marshall with that new ball.
16:48And I tell you what, he will get a standing ovation.
16:51Because what a very courageous inning that was.
16:53Courage and some glorious shots today from Kepler Vessels.
16:56Ten runs off just 32 balls.
17:01Yet to reach the boundary.
17:05Good catch.
17:06That'll get into classic catches for this year.
17:08A beautiful piece of work there.
17:13He's got a marvellous pair of hands, that fellow Richie Richardson.
17:16A fine performance in the end.
17:17Because they lost two wickets at 91 this morning.
17:20Steve Rickson and Kim Hughes.
17:22And then Kepler Vessels played what I think is probably his best innings for Australia.
17:2698 in 246 minutes.
17:28With a badly injured arm when he was struck yesterday by Courtney Walsh.
17:32Border 21, Boone 12.
17:33And Lawson an excellent 49.
17:36And the bowling figures for the West Indies.
17:38Marshall 5 for 69.
17:40Garner 2 for 61.
17:42Walsh 2 for 88.
17:44And Harper 1 for 56.
17:47We pick up play now in the first over.
17:50Lawson is bowling to Greenwich.
17:51Your commentators Tony Kozier and Ian Chappell.
17:57And he's off the mark with a typical Gordon Greenwich shot.
18:01Short ball pulled away.
18:02Down to backwards, square leg.
18:05Was off the mark with a similar shot in the first innings.
18:07Four runs.
18:17That's a confident appeal.
18:18He's out leg before.
18:20Greenwich goes leg before.
18:22Jeff Lawson gets a leg before decision from Empire Johnson.
18:26His ninth wicket in the match.
18:28Greenwich out early.
18:29The West Indies have lost an early wicket.
18:34And Jeff Lawson strikes again and aren't there happy.
18:38Rodney Hogg comes in there.
18:39Roger Harper's taking strike.
18:41There's the hook.
18:45The man down there can't get around.
18:47It's gone for four.
18:49Well, the two men back.
18:51Roger Harper couldn't hear less.
18:53So Harper looking to be in pretty good touch.
18:56There it goes.
19:00Down towards long leg.
19:02It's gone over.
19:02It's over.
19:03It's gone for six.
19:05Well, they don't have men down there.
19:15There's the hook.
19:16Appeal caught behind.
19:18She's got it with the bouncer.
19:19In the end.
19:20Caught by Rickson.
19:21A good catch.
19:23Three bounces in the over.
19:26A hook for four.
19:27A hook for six.
19:28And now a hook just off the top edge.
19:30Taken by Rickson.
19:31A feel for a leg before he's out.
19:42Richardson goes.
19:43And Australia have struck Richardson out for three.
19:49West Indies three for 45.
19:57In the air.
19:58Caught.
19:59A slow ball has got him.
20:01I reiterate, I say again, it was a good piece of intelligent bowling.
20:08Lawson using every variation at his disposal.
20:12Lawson to Gomes.
20:18Fine shot.
20:20That's a lovely stroke from Larry Gomes.
20:23Wasn't a bad delivery, yet he still clipped it away to the offside boundary.
20:31Safety away overboard his head.
20:38And a beautiful stroke for four.
20:39That's a great shot.
20:50Beautiful shot.
20:51Really making use of the short boundaries here at the Adelaide Oval Square of the Wicket.
20:55That's stupid, what Graham Wood's just done then.
21:00Absolutely no price cutting that ball off.
21:03In fact, you see Graham Wood's hamstring go on him before he actually did dive and then dived rather clumsily.
21:10Perhaps a little bit of that critical there of Graham Wood diving.
21:16It certainly wasn't that.
21:17It was the fact that I think it probably went off balance.
21:19Yes, I take that back.
21:23It wasn't so stupid.
21:32In the air and Alan Border gets a hand to it, but he can't hang on to it.
21:39So, a life for Viv Richards.
21:41Richards has hit that out of the ground.
21:50That's a mighty hit.
21:52It's gone right over the boundary at mid-wicket.
21:55A mighty hit by Richards.
21:57Haven't seen much of vintage Richards this season so far, but that was a glorious shot.
22:02Quote behind, Richards goes out for 42, four for 218.
22:17Hogget gets his third wicket.
22:20Vivian Richards is not happy about that.
22:21Very definitely protested.
22:24It looks as if he was trying to tell us that he'd hit the ground.
22:28And I think he did.
22:29The question is whether it hits the bat at the same time.
22:31Let's have another look.
22:32it's certainly hit his toe perhaps that was what it was when they turn they hold
22:38that to shiny side on the opposite side the direction was there which just wanted
22:45to swing this should be an in swinger judging from the grip
22:52Steve Rickson is the only one game for it someone else is coming in but Rickson's got it
23:00the two fellas rushing towards it at one stage Hughes held back the other fella kept on coming
23:06and Rickson finally grabbed it but only just Clive Lloyd no doubt before he declares giving
23:16a lot of thought to what he said Australia would like to see the left-hander get a century
23:22good shot off the pads Bob Holland coming around from fine leg
23:32and if Larry Gomes was to reach his century in this second innings it would take him
23:41up with Clive Lloyd on six test centuries against Australia
23:48and he'll get the second if he hurries that's his hundred on this field and Larry Gomes gets his
24:026th century against Australia great performance from the left-hander tremendous performance
24:106th centuries against Australia no wonder they're not quite sure how to bowl to him
24:17it's time he's gone out the bat in this series he's pushed and nudged the ball away and today
24:26he's played some glorious strikes as well beautiful timing out there
24:29that's an unusual shot from Gomes through mid-wicket he gets four runs for it but very
24:39unusual to see Larry Gomes slog and he certainly slog there border to Dujol
24:45full toss put where it should have been over mid-wicket for six
24:58and you get a bowler as slow as Alan border giving you a full toss knee height
25:05there really is only one place to put it 6 for 292 120 to Gomes 32 to Dujol last over the day I should
25:13think with Robert Holland bowling and he's picked up the wicket of Jeffrey Dujol the umpires will take
25:21off the bails now that will be it 7 for 292 with Dujol out caught at point
25:32Boone was the fielder Holland the recipient of the wicket
25:39nicely taken by David Boone
25:43well that's exactly what Clive Lloyd said he wanted a lead of 350 or more before he would close
25:53and he was carried on to that score by some quite good tactics out there by Alan border and the
25:58Australians they made sure it took Larry Gomes a little bit longer than might normally have been
26:02the case to pick up his sixth century against Australia it's 120 not out to him and Dujol out
26:09right at the death there to Bob Holland caught by Boone for 32 and Desmond Haynes 50 before falling
26:15to Geoffrey Lawson the bowling figures Lawson three for 69 Hogg three for 77 Holland one for 54 Alderman
26:22expensive 12 overs for 66 but he wasn't fully fit Australia win with a chance of a draw but no chance
26:28of a win in my opinion 364 behind when Clive Lloyd made the closure here now is the third ball of the day
26:35Marshall is the bowler Kepler vessels is taking strike and your commentators Ian Chappell and Keith Stackpole
26:42not much bounce in that delivery Malcolm Marshall banging it in short
26:55and Kepler vessels gets the Australian second innings rolling
27:06big appeal there for LBW must have been very close he's given him
27:08Dyson has a little look around at the stumps and so my Malcolm Marshall has struck there
27:14Dyson playing from the crease memory takes his stance just behind the line
27:18the judge to LBW vessels very much in the wars still with that
27:25left arm of his bandaged
27:28all well played he's hit it in the air just over the top of the man who's been set down there and that's over
27:33his head and down to the boundary for four so once again vessels taking the attack to the West Indies
27:38just managing to get it over the infield Courtney Walsh and he's bowling to vessels
27:48lovely shot well we've seen some superb strokes from the left-handers in this match
27:55vessels in the first innings and Larry Gomes yesterday and that would rank as one of the best
28:03and he's gone right through him beautiful delivery from Malcolm Marshall
28:11had Alan Borda all squared up and Marshall gets his second wicket and Borda bold for 18 2 470
28:19bold with a shooter Hughes goes for two so his misery continues as he plays back the ball creeps along
28:33the ground and the West Indies have taken their third wicket Malcolm Marshall's third Australia 3 4 78
28:39and went past about shin height i would reckon but that's good bowling from Marshall
28:51Marshall comes in now bowling to Kepler vessels
28:56that's a good shot from Kepler vessels and that'll bring up his 50. very good pull shot
29:02and he's hit nine boundaries in that 50. it's been a very very good innings it certainly has
29:15it's in the air and he's gone beautifully taken there by Harper diving away to his right no mistake
29:22at all he never looked as if he was going to do anything other than catch that that ball just outside
29:26off stump and what magnificent hands he's got yes all of the West Indian fieldsman seem to be pretty
29:32adept at catching this was a good delivery Boone followed it it moved off the wicket and look how
29:37far the bat is from Boone's body when he makes contact he did that in Brisbane as well falling in
29:42similar fashion to an equally brilliant catch by Michael holding but that was a beauty Harper to vessels
29:48yes and that's the sort of shot that he's been playing that must be his favorite stroke the draw
30:01away square cut he gives himself room and leans into the ball vessels with over half the runs here
30:10good confident drive he really is playing well there's a bad bit of fielding by
30:14watch really very sloppy that's going to go for four very sloppy bit of work in the upfield by Courtney
30:22watch and Clyde Lloyd isn't happy with that but young man will know that he's annoyed his captain
30:33appeal for a catch he's out he touched it and knocked up by Dujon so that vessels goes for 70
30:40he caught behind the ball really jumped and Dujon had to knock it up before catching it so fine
30:48innings by vessels caught Dujon bull Harper for 70 4 for 1 23
30:59bouncer and wood hooking and hooking very well
31:01good shot by graham wood played a similar hook shot in the australian first innings
31:18hit nice and crisply kept it low
31:20richard's just being dragged a little squarer by clive lloyd
31:31oh that's got to be close yes steve rickson on his way there
31:35pushed through a little bit and rickson off the back foot trying to push away on the onside
31:40in fact trying to push through that gap that clive lloyd had just left when he moved viv richards around
31:51quicker one and there's an edge there beautiful catch by jeffrey dujon
31:56lovely piece of bowling but by jove dujon is keeping very well up to the stumps today
32:03graham wood looking to run it away on that offside
32:05a good healthy edge that that was not an easy catch because that was going like a board that one
32:10from harper because he's quicker delivery a thick edge you heard it it deviated and into the left hand
32:16of dujon and isn't he rap
32:22oh there's a big edge there and he's out caught behind once again lawson standing his ground big edge
32:27there taken very cleanly by dujon and lawson makes his way dejectedly back towards the pavilion
32:35he's bowled him hog trying to smash that away down to deep mid wicket head in the air playing a
32:46rather cross-battered shot there and uh the ball just turned a little bit and of course no no problem
32:51at all there going through or perhaps just under the bat frank it kept a little bit low i think it did spin
32:57hog's intentions yes it just hit the stumps about six inches up so that ball certainly kept down
33:02and he might tempt terry alderman with the ball that moves away he does he'll throw it fairly wide i
33:10would think
33:14again the in swinger and this time it collects the stumps so he doesn't have to worry about the lbw
33:20and that gives malcolm marshall 10 for the game five in each innings and it also gives it also gives
33:29the west indies victory by 191 runs and as well as the victory in this third test match an unassailable
33:37lead in the series three nil there was a slight improvement by the australians the match had gone
33:42into the fifth day after all but the australian batsmen were showing they just couldn't withstand the
33:47west indian bowlers led by malcolm marshall and roger harper kepler vessels was the only australian
33:53batsman to offer any resistance in what was a very poor showing in the second innings
