23:06It's time for the WWF Championship match as the corporate champion The Rock defends against
23:11mankind. Vince McMahon stated that he had a problem with the people and therefore he
23:15had a problem with their champion, The Rock. Vince would go on to make Rocky's life miserable,
23:20screwing him out of the opportunity to become WWF champion and putting his career on the
23:23line against Mark Henry. The Rock would be victorious in that match thanks to some help
23:28from Vince's son Shane, therefore qualifying for the deadly game tournament at Survivor
23:32Series. Rock would make it through to the finals of the tournament where he would meet Vince's
23:36chosen corporate representative Mankind. In a shocking turn of events however, Vince would
23:41screw Mankind out of the title, revealing to the world that he and The Rock had been in
23:45cahoots this whole time. Poor Mick Foley had been used by Vince, and the corporation was
23:50now going through great lengths to humiliate Mankind. Before declaring his allegiance to
23:55the corporation, commissioner Shawn Michaels granted Mankind a title match at rock bottom,
23:59along with a contract that stated that if The Rock was unable to defend his championship
24:03for any reason, then the title would automatically go to Mick Foley. Earlier on tonight on Sunday
24:08Night Heat, Mankind would attack the champion, causing damage to The Rock's ribs, and as
24:13we've seen, Vince McMahon spent the evening trying to bargain with Mick to call the match
24:17off. Backstage, Vince tells Rocky and Shane that after his meeting with Mick earlier tonight,
24:22all Mankind wants to do is have everyone in the ring to take care of this whole issue.
24:27Mankind makes his entrance, contract in hand, and now we'll all get to see what his plan
24:32is regarding this WWF title match. The Rock makes his way down to the ring alongside Vince
24:38and Shane, pausing to admire the two large photographs of himself at the entranceway. Despite
24:43Rocky being a heel, these fans here in Vancouver react very favourably to the
24:47corporate champion, giving him the best reception of anyone thus far tonight with the only exception
24:52maybe being Owen Hart. Vince grabs the mic and he states that before they get down to
24:56business he'd like to point out to Mick that he has a hole in his tights, very good. Mankind
25:01says that he'll be more than happy to put a line through the clause that states Rock can
25:05lose the title if he can't compete, because there's nothing he'd like to do more than kick
25:10Rock's corporate ass all over Vancouver, but Mick will only cross out that clause if Vince admits,
25:15to the entire world, that he never heard the words I quit come out of Mankind's mouth back
25:20at Survivor Series. Vince says that if the Rock heard Mick say I quit then it's good enough
25:26for him, so Mick takes the contract and he tears it into pieces right in front of Vince,
25:30giving the Rock the incentive to attack Mick from behind. The WWF championship match is on.
25:41Rocky lays in a few right hands to start the match off, but Mick turns things around and the champ
25:45gets pummeled in the corner. Foley turns his attention to the injured ribs of the Rock before
25:49choking him over the middle rope, the action then spills to the outside and Rocky ends up getting
25:54thrown into the ring steps before getting his head bounced off the barricade. Mankind then whips
25:59Rocky into the ring apron and he follows that up with a clothesline on the floor. The Rock's in a
26:03lot
26:03of trouble early on here and the chairman looks concerned as his champion gets his face introduced
26:08to the announce table. Mankind throws Rocky back inside the ring and Vince gets on the
26:12mic, Mick tells Mike Kiyota that if Mick continues to do stuff like he just did at the announce
26:17table then the challenger has to be disqualified immediately. This distraction allows the champ
26:23to take Mick down with a clothesline before laying in more right hands and he chokes Mankind
26:27in the corner and once again the fight goes to the outside. We see the blatant hypocrisy of the boss
26:33in action as Rocky chokes Mankind with a cable but of course, the corporate champ doesn't get
26:37disqualified. Rock then gets tossed over the top to the floor and Mick connects with a baseball slide
26:42which sends Rock into the announce table. Mick looks like he's gonna dive on the champ from the
26:47second rope but Shane's able to grab Mick's foot, distracting him long enough for the rock to recover
26:51and toss Mankind off the second rope to the floor. This looked and sounded like it absolutely killed
26:57and no wonder Mick took a few minutes to compose himself afterwards. Rock then takes Kog's headset
27:03and he talks some trash to the millions, taking time to smash Mick's head into the commentary table
27:08while doing so. He then rehydrates Mankind by spitting water in his face but all that does is fire Mick
27:13up
27:14as he repays the favour before climbing over the desk to lay the smack down on Rocky. Mick then grabs
27:19a chair
27:20despite knowing that he'll get DQ'd if he uses it but Rock's able to stop Foley and he delivers a
27:25DDT
27:26on that same chair. Back inside the ropes, the Rock plants Foley with a body slam, setting up for the
27:31corporate elbow. Rock hits it flush, much to the delight of fans in attendance but it only garners a
27:37two. Foley counters an attempted back body drop with a swinging neckbreaker and both men are down
27:41as Vince and Shane watch on nervously. The two men get back to their feet slowly and Mankind floors the
27:47champion with a clothesline before dropping the leg for a near fall. Mick drops another
27:51leg to the midsection this time, which could only be construed as being a little low and so of course
27:57Vince demands that the ref disqualifies Mankind. But before Mike Chioda can do anything, he gets led
28:02out with a pile driver from Foley and the match continues on. Vince then tells the timekeeper to
28:07ring the bell but Mick takes him out too before turning his attention to the boss. Rock's able to
28:12neutralise Mick with a chair shot to the back before he can get his hands on McMahon though.
28:17Back in the ring, Rock hits a rock bottom, how appropriate, but we have no referee to end the
28:22match. Rock holds Mick so as Shane can come in to clobber Mick with the WWF title built,
28:28but Foley moves out of the way and Shane hits Rock by mistake. Mick drapes an arm across just as
28:33the
28:33second referee comes down but the Rock manages to get his shoulder up at two and a half. Rock answers
28:39with
28:39float over DDT but he misses a clothesline, walking right into a double arm DDT which garners another
28:45near fall for the challenger. Foley decides it's time to bring out the big guns as Mr Socko emerges
28:50from Mankind's tights and Mr Socko ends up down Rocky's gullet. Mankind keeps it locked in tight
28:56as Rock tries to fight out but eventually Rock fades away and the referee calls for the bell,
29:01we have just crowned a new WWF champion at rock bottom. Vince however, sees things differently
29:07as he gets on the mic to announce that yes, Mankind did win the match, but since the Rock never
29:13tapped
29:13out or said I quit, then he's still the WWF champion, using Mick's own grievance from Survivor Series
29:21against them here. Mick doesn't take this news too well, so Vince McMahon takes Mr Socko, Shane tries
29:27to save his dad with a chair shot to Mick's back but all this does is give Shane a formal
29:31introduction to
29:32Mr Socko as well. The Stooges then come down to help out, they too are quickly dealt with,
29:38but Shamrock and the boss man show up and they're able to finally subdue Mankind. Rock gets in a few
29:43cheap shots before raising the championship gold above his head as the McMans are helped to the
29:48back by the corporation. The Rock celebrates on the stage with his corporate brethren as a dejected
29:53Mick Foley limps his way back up the ramp. As far as this show goes, this match has far and
29:59away been the
29:59best on the card, which shouldn't be surprising if you watch their match back at Survivor Series.
30:04These two have great chemistry and it's safe to say that this won't be the last time we see these
30:09two men in the ring together going forward. As a matter of fact, things are going to get
30:13really violent between these two at the beginning of 1999.
30:22Main event time and it's the bout that's been hyped up all evening long, it's the buried alive
30:28match between The Undertaker and Stone Cold Steve Austin, the winner earns himself a spot in the
30:331999 Royal Rumble match. These two have been intertwined for the majority of 1998 with their
30:38rivalry really coming to the forefront around the time of the King of the Ring in June. They've
30:42been partners, they've been opponents, but now both men's hatred for each other runs deeper than a
30:47mere professional rivalry. On the November 16th episode of Raw, The Undertaker cost Austin a chance
30:52to become WWF champion by interfering in his title match and cracking him in the head with a shovel.
30:57On the following episode of Sunday Night Heat, Vince declared that he was nothing but a good sport
31:02and he said Austin would be one of the 30 participants in the Royal Rumble match but
31:06only if he could defeat The Undertaker in a buried alive match. The attack from the
31:10shovel landed Austin in hospital with a serious concussion, but The Undertaker was determined to
31:15finish what he started and he attacked Stone Cold while the rattlesnake recovered. Austin got taken to
31:20the cemetery where The Undertaker planned on burying Stone Cold alive, but The Prince of Darkness had a
31:25change of heart and he decided instead that he was gonna embalm Austin alive, pretty gruesome stuff.
31:31Just as he was about to do the deed, Kane showed up to fight his brother, allowing Austin to escape
31:36with his life. The following week, Austin re-paid the favor and he took The Undertaker out with a
31:41shovel of his own before he and Kane took Paul Bearer hostage and Mr Bearer got put in the sewers.
31:46On the
31:47go home episode of Raw, following a tag team match featuring Austin and Mankind against Undertaker
31:52and Rock, the dead man would tie Austin to his symbol and he raised the rattlesnake into the air
31:57in a symbolic crucifixion, stating that he's taken Austin's mind, body and soul and the only thing
32:03left was to bury him alive. Let's see if that premonition comes true the night at rock bottom.
32:13The lights go down inside the General Motors place, signalling the arrival of The Undertaker. King
32:19and Michael Co reiterate the rules of this match, stating that there are no pinfalls, no countouts,
32:24no submissions and no disqualifications. The only way to win the match is to put your opponent in
32:29the grave and cover his body with dirt until he's buried alive. We even have a camera placed inside
32:35the grave which I'm sure did wonders for those watching at home who have a fear of being buried
32:39alive. Those inside the arena lose their collective mind as they hear the glass shatter and Stone Cold
32:45makes his way down the rump. Austin shows that he refuses to be intimidated as he stands over the
32:50gravesite before running down to the ring where he and the dead man collide in the aisleway. Austin goes
32:55on the attack early with a number of right hands which sends The Undertaker back towards the grave and
32:59Austin decides to choke the phenom with his entrance vest. Austin then substitutes his vest for a
33:05cable before throwing Taker into a guardrail and Steve then picks up that guardrail only for Taker
33:10to counter with the boot to the midsection. Taker continues to beat Austin down around the gravesite
33:14before finally taking the fight to the ring where Austin delivers the Luthez press and a big elbow
33:20to the face. Undertaker then gets his creature of the night smashed into the steel ring post before
33:25getting his knee wrapped around that same ring post. Austin scores with a double x-handle from the
33:29barricade before sending Taker into the ring steps but the dead man ends up catching Austin with a big boot
33:34to the face. Austin then gets thrown into the laps of the spanish announce team, he's able to fight
33:39back and looks to pile drive Taker on the floor but it's Austin who ends up on the concrete as
33:44he
33:44gets countered with a backdrop. Stone Cold then gets choked by the boot of the dead man back inside the
33:49ring before Taker pulls Austin's shoulder around the ring post, Austin gets dragged back up to the
33:54gravesite and the dead man looks to deliver a blow that'll send his opponent six feet under but Austin
33:59blocks it and he manages to send Taker spilling down the mound of dirt to the floor. Austin then
34:04grabs that steel guard rail from earlier and he charges at the phenom, knocking him down once
34:09again. The two fight up to the grave and both men hang perilously over the edge of it but it's
34:14Austin
34:14who pushes Taker in. The phenom however is able to hit Austin with a burial wreath and now both men
34:20are
34:20in the grave. Austin gets choked before the undertaker grabs a shovel, the same weapon to put Austin in
34:25hospital but he gets attacked before he can use it. The two continue to brawl around the gravesite before
34:31eventually taking the fight back towards the ringside area where undertaker finds a chair and he cracks
34:36Austin right between the eyes. It's at this point you realise that there really hasn't been a lot
34:41happening in this match so far, I know it's all building to a big crescendo with one man being
34:46buried alive but thus far both men have taken a lot of shortcuts with brawling on the outside and
34:51heading back and forth to the grave at the top of the ramp. Even the crowd who were into this
34:57match
34:57when it began have quietened down significantly. Austin looks to hit another axe handle, this time
35:02off the apron but he gets caught and Taker drives him into the ring post. Back in the ring, Austin
35:07fires up with a few right hands but Taker cuts him off with a chokeslam. Taker drags Austin back up
35:13to
35:13the gravesite, grabbing a can of gasoline as he goes. Austin gets knocked into the grave, the biggest pop
35:19of the match so far comes when Taker gets hit with a drink thrown by a fan in the audience.
35:24I don't
35:24condone throwing things at performers but I gotta say, I was impressed. Taker starts to throw dirt on
35:30top of Stone Cold but the rattlesnake's able to climb out and he hits the dead man in the head
35:35with
35:35that can of gasoline. He hits him again before delivering a stunner which sends the undertaker
35:39into the grave, the crowd did come alive for this to be fair. Austin tips a wheelbarrow full of dirt
35:45onto
35:45the undertaker before chasing Paul Bear with that gas can, this allows Taker to climb out of the grave and
35:50he
35:50seems a tad perplexed by the fact that Austin's nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, fire shoots up from
35:56out of the grave and the undertaker turns around to see Cain standing on top of the dirt, the brothers
36:00brawl around the gravesite and Taker sets Cain up for a tombstone, the phenom gets distracted by
36:05something happening at the entranceway and this allows Cain to turn the tables and drop the dead
36:10man with a tombstone of his own. We see what it was that had the undertaker so confused and that's
36:15Stone Cold driving a digger to the gravesite, Cain tosses the prone body of his brother into the
36:20grave and after what seemed like a nice age due to some confusion with the driver, the digger dumps
36:26the dirt on the undertaker. The driver seems to be having real trouble controlling the vehicle blade
36:31to load more dirt, so much so that a pissed off Steve Austin has to grab a shovel and start
36:36pushing
36:36dirt into the grave himself. It gets quite painful to watch as the driver takes ages to do anything, so
36:42Austin grabs a few beers, he has a word with Art Hebner, and the referee raises Austin's hand in victory.
36:48Stone Cold's music plays and Austin's declared the winner, earning himself a spot in the Royal Rumble
36:53match and giving himself one more opportunity at the WWF title. This match was not good, a punch
37:00kick affair which lasted over 20 minutes with little, if anything, to get excited about. Even the
37:06terrifying nature of the stipulation was made to look ridiculous due to how botched the finish was,
37:10and it's a shame too seeing as this was one of the hottest feuds of 1998. Austin pours one out
37:17for
37:17his day at homey, the show fades to black, and that's WWF rock bottom in the books.
37:27Not a great show from the WWF this time around. Out of all 8 matches on the card,
37:32only one could be deemed as worth seeing, that being the WWF title match. Despite it only really
37:37being a match that could be described as solid, it seemed so much better than what it was when
37:42compared to everything else on this card, you know. The Blackman vs Owen match was okay,
37:46but you wouldn't feel like you'd missed out if you didn't see it. Everything else was mediocre to
37:51downright boring, and that's the worst thing that a wrestling show can be, in my opinion.
37:56Hopefully, things will pick up when we have a look at the fallout from rock bottom on the next
38:00episode of reliving the war. Join me on Thursday and we'll see what Vince has in store for Stone Cold,
38:05now that he's guaranteed a spot in the Royal Rumble.
38:07Thanks for watching this one guys, and please, take care.
38:41I'll see you in the next one.
38:41I'll see you in the next one.
