00:03in just four years Danny McCaskill's amazing riding films have earned him
00:08global recognition as one of the world's best riders but his new film
00:15imaginate was a concept so different and so ambitious that it was hard to believe
00:20it would ever be realized a year and a half in the making to complete the film
00:33Danny had to battle through serious injury and major spine surgery I think if he
00:38doesn't do something about it he's gonna have limits and limits are not a word a
00:42Red Bull athlete wants to hear for the first time ever he designed and built his
00:47ideal riding world I'm gonna feel like I'm a kid and I'm given like I don't know
00:53it's like the biggest toy ever it's just like I think we can do something pretty
00:58amazing here you know what an opportunity and then mastered new tricks and stunts
01:04that completely redefined his limits
01:09in this exclusive documentary we tell the story of how Danny's extraordinary
01:14imagination was brought to life on a grand scale to create imaginate for the
01:26imaginate project I was really given a blank sheet of paper he's constantly
01:32thinking about what he can do and tricks he can do suppose it is dangerous whatever I
01:39think he's genuinely been scared and this is somebody who's not scared doesn't get scared
01:48it's not the fear of hurting himself it's more about getting that trick right
01:55I don't actually realize the sort of extent of his imagination when you see things like telegraph
02:01poles made into colored pencils just great incredible I think Danny has taken writing films to a different
02:08dimension really I still find incredible I get to ride my bike for a living it's just absolutely
02:17crazy Danny's three riding films before imaginate was simply spectacular and have received in excess of
02:2570 million views the first inspired bicycles introduced Danny's incredible skills to the world as he tricked his way across
02:36Edinburgh
02:36very first film I made was inspired bicycles street riding in Edinburgh it was just lines I
02:43wanted to do in the second film he created an extraordinary journey across the spectacular
02:49landscapes of Scotland to his home on the beautiful Isle of Skye I kind of wanted to change things up
02:56with a
02:56way back home Scotland for me is very much kind of rural so I really went out to look for
03:02all the
03:02concrete structures kind of doing the street riding except for out in the wilderness and in the third film
03:10Danny turned the picturesque yet decaying ironworks into a divine playground then this revolution project that
03:18kind of all just sort of fell together we hadn't find the location until about a week before we start
03:23filming and it was kind of sort of along the same lines as the way back home but these first
03:29films
03:29all focused on journeys around places and spaces and for the new film Danny was determined not to repeat
03:36himself the imaginary projects itself just a search snowballed into something so much bigger than I
03:44could have ever imagined it was going to be I've kind of gotten fed up with waiting for the sun
03:51you
03:51know close by the cloud and you're waiting there you're ready to go but you have to wait 20 minutes
03:55for
03:55it to come back out so I thought it'd be a great opportunity to kind of go indoors we really
04:01have got
04:01everything I could I could possibly need to do this project myself and Stu Thompson decided to work
04:06together on the project you know Stu's you know awesome director you know he's got really got a grasp of
04:12how to deal
04:12with that kind of production and you know this is such a big beast man really need somebody like him
04:18to be involved
04:18once he was given this idea of a blank canvas you know he immediately started writing things down
04:23what comes from Danny is the initial sort of concept and then he thinks of writing like what he can
04:28do the tricks he can do and I think one of the big challenges with Danny is actually
04:32reining him into something that's possible he suddenly went I've had this idea it might not be very good but
04:37what if it's kind of a kid's toy box I wanted to come up with a project where I could
04:44do anything I
04:45wanted there's not even if you imagine all the different tricks you'd love to take and try to do
04:48well I thought it'd be cool to have something where you could basically put anything you want into it to
04:52make that happen right things that are borderline ridiculous I mean there was a like a sheep chariot
05:00we do sit down and he'll go ah well I could do this and jump on this and do that
05:04and then it's
05:05kind of making his concept become a film everyone's put in 200% into this you know I think every
05:12single
05:13person that's worked in the project has really put their all into it and I'm so grateful for that you
05:18know it's um so far over and above you know it's just just awesome Danny's unique take on the
05:26environment around him and what it offers him as a rider began as a child on the Isle of Skye
05:32on the
05:32northwest coast of Scotland what was my sister's that got him his first bike I don't think it would
05:38even been a new one it was one that was refurbished I think you could call it really just from
05:45that he
05:45was he was off and he was always outdoors even despite to sometimes inclement weather and sky
05:57our garden at one point was all the dry look around the whole garden to try and contain him to
06:05keep him
06:05in and um the netting went up and there would be ropes put in and there's a plank a way
06:13up one tree
06:14where he and his pals used to climb up the tree and then jump down into the fishing net so
06:19very messy
06:20in hindsight it wasn't exactly a way to bring up a child or encourage a child
06:32things could have gone seriously wrong I mean he was pushing everything to the absolute limit I
06:37don't believe in children being too mollycoddled because I think they don't learn to look out for
06:42themselves but we differ in this a wee bitty one of the one of the things with a carefree childhood
06:50Daniel was soon learning the craft of bouncing around on his bike did I hurt you're not rubbish we
07:01really what brought to my attention anyway how really good he was was when the police start taking
07:05him home he'd arrive he'd arrive up with this tiny wee bloke with two big policemen and the little party
07:12shot but he's very very good he was always happy and cheery and he'd a lot of good
07:20friends and he was good fun from mastering his art in his back garden on the Isle of Skye to
07:26his
07:26most ambitious riding film ever Danny's childhood dreams have become a reality as filming for
07:33Imaginate began in Glasgow what we're doing today is we're filming the beginning of the film so it's a
07:44bedroom set that is normal size as opposed to the giant size through there what we've built
07:50is young Danny's bedroom and then he projects into the future all of these amazing stunts and all
07:57these strange toys and this bit of the film was actually the last part of the concept of fall into
08:05place very early on Danny had the idea that this was going to be based in a small corner of
08:12boys
08:13bedroom and their imagination and that imagination going wild and all the things that he dreamed of
08:18doing as a child with his toys and the idea that he could make those reality and now he's in
08:23the
08:23situation or position where he can it was very important then to link that bedroom with this space
08:29and try and find as many things in that bedroom the sort of things that fire the imagination like the
08:34vent we built gigantic versions of here so there was a nice yeah balance we had a bedroom set built
08:41next
08:42door which is going to have a child actor playing me you know playing with some of his toys that
08:48which
08:49we're going to make giant in the space here it was really cool having that all built with all the
08:53different blocks and the loop there and it was like a proper kind of TV shoot and you know when
09:01you're looking from the outside in you always knew we wanted to have weird and wonderful things like
09:06racing cars and trains and tanks and so we had to then build a bedroom set and actually put that
09:14into the story we've got Danny's mom here playing Danny's mom I'm okay it was a really cool opportunity
09:21for me to have my mom in the film you know she was a little bit reluctant at first but
09:26um she's come
09:28into it and I think it's it's a it's a good bit of fun Daniel I'm gonna shoot the boots
09:34off you if
09:34you don't stop mucking about with your bike and come and get your tea I'm not telling you what it's
09:40good that's going to be a surprise okay okay what my bit says you know we've got a young actor
09:47called
09:48Harry who's brilliant and he's got a great CV and a little bit of a likeness to a younger Danny
09:54what do you reckon I'm I think that's a bit I'm just trying to remember it's just a bit scruffy
09:58you've got the photographs I think yeah yeah I'm Danny's a younger version of himself like
10:05thinking about what he's gonna do when he's older and and what he does do like eventually it's really
10:11exciting I enjoy it I think what people don't realize and Danny would never give himself the
10:16credit for it is that all these ideas kind of come out of his his crazy brain and you know
10:22he is
10:22pretty close to being an artist as much as he is being an amazing athlete dreams of creating a
10:32brand new concept in riding films began in the winter of 2011 but before he could do anything he
10:39knew he would have to tackle some long-term injury that might hinder the ambition of the
10:43tricks he was imagining I'm not really too sure exactly you know how our first sustained the back
10:51injury so reared its head in different ways you know and most recent ways it's been affecting my
10:58knee which has been a bit of a problem now when I start losing the power in my leg I'm
11:02not in
11:03control of my bike so I can't rewrite it for the project to be successful Danny's injury required
11:10specialist treatment and hours of hot sunshine neither of which were available on the Isle of Skye I
11:19can I get given this massive project that's gonna be amazing it was a bit frustrating knowing I was
11:25going from being able to write it maybe 70% you know I wasn't I wasn't really happy riding my
11:30bike
11:31not 70% I was really sort of wanted to be able to push and to be able to do
11:36what I would you know
11:37normally do every day aside from medical treatment California also offered the opportunity to work
11:43alongside fellow bike riders the Atherton's and their trainer Darren the Atherton's who were down
11:49on mountain bikers travel out to California for winter training and I travel with them and while
11:55we're out there with the athletes we always try and encourage other athletes to come with us and
12:00whilst we were out there I suggested to Danny that maybe he come out with us as well and he
12:05could train
12:05with us he could stay with us and then I get to keep an eye on exactly what he's doing
12:10he can educate
12:11himself and plus he gets to see other athletes in that environment physically preparing for
12:16something number one the last I don't know how many years of riding I've never ever been in a gym
12:31it can jump off a cliff but it can't do a dumbbell press I've learned to kind of enjoy it
12:37I think and the
12:39Darren always makes it fun it's always good fun training with the Atherton's as well although they
12:43mock me quite a lot but one day I'm gonna I'm gonna actually train properly in the gym and be
12:49able to
12:49beat them off training with Danny is it's always it's always different you know it's not like when I'm
12:54training with some of the other athletes you know it's always a good laugh I think it's super hard
13:00for Danny because you can't really categorize what he does and therefore there's no set training plan
13:05for what he does you know it's very much a natural talent thing so to speak and you know whilst
13:09the
13:09training can help him recover from injuries you know there's not really an obvious training route
13:14that he needs to take to to help him perform if you like he's got his own mind he's got
13:24his own way
13:24of doing things and you know if he complies to 20% of what I asked him to do I'll
13:30be amazed but it's
13:32just it's just the way they are you know you've just got to work with these guys and try and
13:35get
13:36them to where they need to get to while I was out there I went to visit disc we were
13:41investigating
13:41some of the problems I had with my knee as well as my back and that's when they you know
13:45they found
13:46that I had a torn disc in my in my lower back that for me was a you know a
13:50real sort of big setback
13:52kind of unexpected I suppose it was nice to kind of get to the root of this problem I'd been
13:56having
13:56Danny has a unique injury in his lowest disc a rip or a tear in his low back and it
14:02hasn't healed
14:02that's been complicating his recovery from his knee it was definitely a bit of a decision that we had
14:08to make given the kind of option that we could leave my desk and it might heal itself or we
14:14could
14:14kind of just go and just sort it out
14:36you know with this project I've got such a free range that I can build the setups you know that
14:41allow me to kind of do that kind of tricks that you know that have just been my dreams up
14:48until now so
14:49yeah you know I just I just need to really get the time to get back on my bike and
14:53get up to full speed
14:55before that happens some of them might be so big kind of banger tricks other than maybe a bit quirky
15:03and sort of funny I'd like to get a bit of fun into this stuff as well so I think
15:08you know I'm not
15:09particularly serious person and so I'd like to sort of put that across in a video the surgery was a
15:16risk and could have affected his ability to ride a bike but it was to prove a risk worth taking
15:26I think one day I'd like to go into a gym and not be doing rehab the day that happens
15:31I could maybe
15:31start enjoying it I'm not suggesting to Danny that being great in the gym is going to make him great
15:38on a bike but it would just help his body tolerate what he's asking it to do you know how
15:44much you can
15:44squat or how much you can bench press isn't going to make you any better at doing the tricks you
15:48do
15:48but if you're in better physical condition you can tolerate what you're asking your body to do
15:54it's a very necessary part of rehabilitation if you don't go there and you don't do it then
15:59you're not going to get better I've learned to enjoy it I think that I don't always makes it fun
16:06it's some kind of looks like an atom cluster or some sort bouncing a knobbly ball around it's a good
16:13laugh as well and it warms up depth perception and peripheral vision and a whole bunch of other
16:17things rather than just doing it statically trying to get him back on his bike is is the number one
16:27priority because that's where is his happiest while Danny continued to recover planning for the project
16:36was underway first meeting with in the Red Bull headquarters for a while pretty exciting day
16:45there's always been tricks that I've always wanted to learn but you'd never find the rights up in the
16:49street so you've got all these like I've got all these things in my head I think this would be
16:52brilliant to do this would be brilliant to do but then you can never find the right place so I
16:56thought
16:58if we kind of come up with idea that's got sort of no limitations I don't actually realize the sort
17:04of extent of his imagination until like this last sort of year you know the imaginary project started
17:08off as you know this little idea in my in my sketchbooks so I did it's kind of going to
17:12be funny
17:14but sort of almost unbelievable some of these ideas that were just these little drawings have turned out
17:19to be huge operations Danny's ideas are completely out there we've got every single possible way of
17:26doing anything you could possibly do on a bike condensed into a very thick book so you should
17:32ride along and you do a thing called a hippie hop where you jump off the bike so once I
17:37would do a
17:37technical drawing of some kind of some kind of model and show him that would actually just lead to more
17:43ideas I'm a tiger and my elephant and my fox they'll be in there somewhere what's the elephant
17:47cool just it's just in case there was a second just in case yeah just have it kind of right
17:55in the
17:55background this sort of snowballed into something so much bigger than I could have ever imagined it
18:00was going to be various locations were considered for the new film but Danny found the ideal venue right
18:08on his doorstep you know I'd been out street riding in Glasgow and I sort of cycle past the old
18:14transport museum at the back of the Kelvin Hall and and thought just I wonder what's happening with
18:20that space yeah we've managed to get access in and have a look see if it's going to be right
18:23for the
18:23project so yeah I mean it's it looks huge from the outside so I can't wait to see what it
18:29looks like from
18:29the inside we're both very very proud to be Scottish and I think we love being here as well and
18:36you know
18:36when you take on a project there's literally going to last or five to six months you want to be
18:40somewhere do you either you want to be it should hopefully be big enough but it's just whether
18:44or not we're gonna have to get access to so much you can think about doing here and and and
18:50it's a
18:51very unique opportunity because it is scheduled for demolition that you're not really going to do
18:54any harm see these rails up there and things like to use that level yeah yeah what would be the
18:59possibility of like you know obviously we're talking through what we would do yeah would be the
19:05possibility of modifying any of that itself oh yeah yeah listen if you if you were wanting to do
19:09something for that video shoot you you could probably have to run in the twist down it yeah
19:12okay yep you kind of feel if you got like a big cherry picker you can probably oh like this
19:20one here
19:23well for me it's I find it incredibly hard to get my my head around spaces like this
19:30we got given the space by Glasgow City Council which is just incredible I mean I feel like I'm a
19:35kid
19:36and I'm given like I don't know it's like the biggest toy ever it's just like I think we could
19:44do something pretty amazing here pre-production was underway while Danny's fitness training continued
19:50it was never certain he would be able to ride well enough to make the film but a high-profile
19:55commitment forced him to return to his trials bike one of the cooler things I did last year was
20:00actually getting to cycle my bike with Olympic torch in the relay so I went out you know in the
20:06morning did some practice at the back of my flat it's good to be back on the lake if I'm
20:11honest I'm a
20:11little bit nervous about it because I've not really been writing I've been trying to think of
20:15something good to use as a torch I quite fancy doing some tricks with the torch because I think
20:24it'd be funny I need to give it a wee practice I can't wave at the same time oh nice
20:31it's nice it feels good
20:34and then just light the torch like that I think as long as they don't singe my eyebrows or the
20:38cred's
20:50it's pretty amazing it's I can't believe how many people are here today so I'm quite pleased the
20:54training paid off it's a very surreal experience for me and it was it's quite funny that was
21:13actually just across the road from the Calvin Hall but it was an awesome reception huge cries all the way
21:23down the road just really good my mom came down the bus today yeah I think it's about a seven
21:28hour
21:28journey so yeah it's a good effort I was excited it was fantastic I was a bit worried about the
21:34church because we don't know what it's like with fire and it was a great day there was just a
21:39great
21:39atmosphere and it was good fun seeing I don't think I was quite prepared for what it's going to be
21:44like
21:45but it's brilliant you know we managed not to fall off burn anything and never get to keep it a
21:49really
21:50cool thing to do and you know I'll definitely look back on it fondly now I've got a sweet Olympic
21:55torch
21:55you know just sits as my ball girl holder as the summer came to a close negotiations were completed
22:04with the venue and pre-production in the hall could finally begin you started looking at you know what
22:10props what things could be written what lines you could you could make you know we could have some
22:14building blocks or or we could make a Rubik's Cube and just came up with all these things that Danny
22:18could maybe ride we move into a warehouse you know what actually can we build what's what's
22:22going to be possible a really important thing for me is to be working with friends and with Duncan
22:31Nash and Stu and John and George from vision ramps who did a lot of the kind of building of
22:36all the
22:36blocks all the wooden kind of structures it's been it's been a little bit like working in the bike
22:44shop again that's me working Danny watching you know they're like kind of the concrete the cement
22:52to kind of make the whole project work and making some props for Danny's imaginary world
23:01getting a nice suntan
23:07is that how you always operate that's classic vision ramps I've got friends Nash and Duncan he's
23:17always had like a really good imagination with Raiden and and then it's come out he's got real sort of
23:24creative and visual imagination as well I feel I've got all the tools kind of to hand or you
23:30know I've got all the skills like all my friends are you know amazing at what they do yeah I've
23:34got
23:34Wesley Cameron who's the project manager and he's just kind of keeping everything moving everybody's
23:41learned together and sort of growing stronger together and it's a very strong unit of people
23:47that have ended up working on this project and to be honest with you I don't think it would have
23:50worked any other way I've got my Christian producing the whole clip with Rachel and his team as well the
23:58hardest thing at first was getting him to kind of let go of the minute detail because there was it's
24:03big production with a big production team and he just wasn't used to allowing other people to do the
24:10things that needed doing and then eventually it got to the point where it was just too overwhelming and
24:15he had to let people do it and then he quite enjoyed letting people do it me Stu the whole
24:21team was
24:22trying to deliver his vision but he's never been in a position where he's had to share and explain that
24:30vision and you know when you build a loop to cycle around and you've never cycled around a loop before
24:37and
24:37you're briefing a team to build your loop how big do you tell them to build it I'd say it's
24:43probably the
24:43first loop loop being built in the UK which is awesome everyone's jealous Danny's not the build
24:52alone was very ambitious and then I had to really sort of step up and and ride the thing six
24:57feet
24:58suddenly seems quite thin or narrow looking at the kind of loop but I think I'll be fine as the
25:05production steamrolled forward it was time for Danny to start riding his bike in earnest but his
25:11frustration at his level of fitness began to show I was hoping my back would recover a little bit
25:17quicker than than it did I would find that I could maybe ride one day a week and then I
25:23would have
25:24to sew ice and kind of manage my back for the rest of the time and I'd maybe build up
25:28to like two or
25:29three days a week and if I rode too hard on it then I would you know definitely notice it
25:35and so be
25:37left unable to do you know to ride for the next few days afterwards and that was really started
25:42to play in my mind you know cuz I know I hard I've got to push my body to film
25:46to help improve Danny's
25:48level of fitness and allow him to practice tricks safely an airbag was brought onto the set say one
25:55of the coolest things that I got in the warehouse and in the beginning was this huge airbag we've got
26:01Peter over from Bagjump showing us how to kind of set it up definitely exciting day for the kind of
26:10project and for riding because I'm gonna learn all the tricks that I've kind of always wanted to do
26:15which is good so now I've never been on a Bagjump airbag so I'm pretty excited about it it's a
26:24custom model
26:25that we especially made for Danny ten by ten there's a bigger size than the standard sizes so um yeah
26:33let's see what happens hope it works look at the size of it I'm just thinking of a thousand different
26:38ways I want to use this airbag it ended up being a really great tool sort of through the kind
26:50of rehab
26:51phase because I had very low impact and so I could be trying some tricks or getting to the you
26:57know
26:57learning the basics of some of the tricks that I had always wanted to do and I just made for
27:08a lot
27:09of fun with all our friends you know we just had such a laugh with it not all the set
27:20was built from
27:20scratch some props had to be found we've got to play with some pretty cool things on this project but
27:28one of which was a tank this is seriously cool some of these ideas that were just these little
27:37drawings have turned out to be huge operations just trying to decide what tank we want you turn up to
27:45this field and there's like a bunch of tanks in there and loads of loads of army stuff and it
27:49just was
27:49like okay this is this is brilliant Danny already had in his mind what he wanted to do and the
27:53line
27:53and what how it featured in the film was kind of already sorted because we had this idea of toy
27:57soldiers and of Danny doing a tailwhip drop off the gun barrel it might be quite cool to even come
28:02up
28:02the side here it's kind of got a decent we angle see if you kicked and did a wee you
28:08could do a wee hook
28:08or something up here off me kick it up back wheel turn I've got my wee guides here that can
28:18just guide
28:18me down onto the barrel as you go like that and do a wee stunt off the end this is
28:28ridiculous
28:30ah what do you want I think we'll get a tank in it look great it was a nice tank
28:37and in the field
28:38we kind of drove it down and it was it was good fun
28:50it's not too bad eh this is the stuff that was in my kind of daydreams or the stuff that
28:58was when
28:58I was drawing my little book this is this this thing right here was like ah yeah it'd be cool
29:02to
29:02get a tank yeah the only thing that I think is kind of missing right now is just like the
29:09feeling
29:09of of maybe not to do the riding I think once we actually start it'll be okay are you nervous
29:17yeah are you genuinely mm-hmm it just took on a completely different feel and meaning and
29:23everything once we brought it on location we brought it in here we were really worried about tearing up
29:32the set and the carpet moving around and everything but it was it was amazing and
29:36the toy soldiers just worked better than we could have ever imagined on the film as well so it just
29:41yeah it was fantastic this is a definitely a childhood dream having a tank with everything in place
29:53filming on the main set began Danny decided to build up the level of tricks starting with the
29:59blocks until he reached the eye-popping mini kicker step up the mini kicker step up was quite a
30:06challenging line and I've never actually you know used the mini kicker to go up anything that kind of
30:13height I knew it was well within my capabilities like easily I'm having to kind of go like just like
30:24the bike go up it really oh my god he just wasn't getting his head wasn't right nice it pisses
30:32me off
30:32because I know it like it's not good don't let it annoy you know how it does through your shit
30:40not
30:41stoked and and what we decided to do was Danny put his earphones in with his iPod on and we
30:48said to
30:49him look just listen to music go and write as if you're writing and we will just film it forget
30:54about saying are you ready you know are you good to do this or whatever just take some runs up
30:58at it
30:59and just when you're ready just hit it and we will make sure we film it and it is somebody
31:03just suddenly
31:03put them in and just got focused and did the line I think that's actually one of my favorite clips
31:13in the
31:17video mastering the mini kicker step up wasn't the only challenge Danny faced riding the turret of the
31:22tank brought its own dramatic twist the tank was one of the obstacles that actually had one of the
31:32biggest crashes on the project on it was a bit of a scary moment actually to be honest it's probably
31:36probably the worst crash I've seen him have first he was just he was just like trying to breathe and
31:45he was clearly really really badly winded but then about sort of five or six seconds into it you could
31:49just see him kind of he shook a little bit and then he just went drifting and like going unconscious
31:53but
31:54he came around but you know he was only he was unconscious for not even 10 seconds and he came
31:58around again and was winded I must have hit my head because I knocked myself out but yeah it's good
32:04to
32:04have a knock here and there it's not the fear of hurting himself it's more about getting that trick
32:14right it's quite nice to have a big knock and and just be able to get back on the boat
32:20the next day
32:23as filming progressed the stunts scaled up until the day comes for the jaw-dropping grand finale it is the
32:30money shot but we're trying to get the loop ridden and Danny didn't back flip out of the wall earlier
32:37on at the dandy it was pretty rad getting it getting pretty dialed and and then it's basically the next
32:44thing's a loop which is kind of a big unknown to everyone because nobody here has ever done one
32:48the whole setup have been playing on my mind and I kind of I knew I'd be able to get
32:53the sort of flip out
32:57of the wall I'd seen a lot of horrific accidents of you know from folk trying to learn loop-the
33:02-loops you know on the
33:03internet and so it was a bit of a mistake watching those videos the loop was always the big trick
33:08it was the
33:08big finale it was the thing that was like really gonna it might set this film apart a little bit
33:13you know
33:13because it's such a unique unique obstacle Danny wasn't only doing a loop-the-loop the final flourish
33:21was a front flip over every schoolboy's dream and what track would be complete without one a formula one car
33:30just trying to work out how it's going to be to front flip over you can make a good photo
33:35hopefully
33:37nice re-end it to the film well to get a whole lot in one take it's going to be
33:42quite a big ask so
33:43just have to work at it I think it's pretty cool isn't it as the whole team prepared for the
33:52grand
33:52finale of the film an unexpected shock brought the whole production to a halt Danny started off he's
33:59quite positive in the morning and then but then as a few words went went on he um he just
34:04started to
34:04complain about being being really dizzy and not being able to focus it was a bit of a strange one
34:08because he didn't he actually didn't look well when I came to work yesterday somebody had came and said
34:13to me Danny wasn't particularly feeling very well but he wasn't very keen and coming to see me but
34:18eventually he did come and see me which I took it to mean that he obviously felt a lot worse
34:22well just head himself still just to go and get a wee check-up see head see what's really wrong
34:28with me when I basically just started um feeling kind of vertigo or feeling very dizzy I started
34:37getting worse and worse throughout the day and I just had to go lie down he ended up sleeping on
34:43one
34:43you know I had some crash mats in here and he ended up just disappearing outside and sort of lying
34:47down on them and he looked he looked really ill and it was pretty much good just the worst time
34:54the
34:54worst time it could have happened yeah just at the hostel and and I had a check-up had a
35:03CT scan he ended
35:04up having labyrinthitis which is an ear infection which completely messes up your balance and which
35:09is not ideal for Danny and but more than that he also you know it also can be quite serious
35:16so you
35:16know it certainly takes a lot of time to get rid of it just threw the whole project up in
35:21there it
35:22was like actually can we finish this film labyrinthitis if you get an infection in your inner ear and that
35:32infection does damage which it can do you may be out for six months or twelve months while you
35:38literally retrain yourself to balance now for a regular person in the street that's not really a
35:45huge problem they can walk up and down fine but for someone like Danny who spends a huge amount of
35:51time
35:51upside down it's it was the worst possible apart from doing his back again or breaking something I
35:58couldn't have seen how it could have been more serious it can potentially put you out for months
36:02and you know and we've been getting on very well with the project and it was you know a real
36:08sort
36:09of setback you know but I tried to kind of stay quite positive about it incredibly after only two
36:15weeks of convalescence Danny was back on top form and ready for the trick of a lifetime Danny had been
36:21told to take two weeks off everyone had said okay two weeks and we'll evaluate the situation and see if
36:25he
36:26come back and ride but in reality I think in Danny's head he took it you know he took a
36:30week off but
36:32after a week he felt good enough to ride so what I actually meant was that Danny got a week
36:37of riding
36:37outside on the street with his headphones in having fun it was really what I'd be needing just to kind
36:43of go and and get those few rides in for myself so I actually came in on the first day
36:47a new man
36:49I feel pretty comfortable to be honest because that week allowed him to improve his level improve
36:55his confidence have fun and come back in a completely different state of mind to finish
37:00the film how are you feeling about this line well we've been at it for a couple of hours listening
37:08with this he's giving the typical on-camera answer yeah how are you feeling about this line really yeah
37:13never getting there the remaining weeks of the film were by far and away the best weeks it just
37:18changed all the whole thing I can't believe it it's been kind of in my dreams for the last like
37:30month
37:31or so I've been literally thinking about this all the time and not knowing what's gonna happen so I'm stoked
37:43it actually ended up being wouldn't use the word easy but it was a nice a nice feeling to kind
37:50of
37:50conquer the loop and and have it so I could actually play in it like it was everyday riding definitely
37:56been one of the coolest experiences on my bike you know now I'm lucky I've still got it here to
38:01kind
38:01of go and play on every day when you actually get it done on camera it's all worth it it
38:07might not feel
38:07worth it when you actually pull it but you know later on when you kind of look back at anything
38:12now I did do that it's cool with two weeks of successful riding and lots more tricks in the bag
38:21the final day of filming brought not just a physical challenge but a mental one was about five o'clock
38:29some of that on the last day filming and then basically we're trying to finish off a line
38:37that's pretty much become Danny's nemesis I had one last trick to do on that I've been plaguing me
38:42throughout the project which is this flare of the five of diamonds on one of the red blocks and it
38:48was starting to become something much bigger than just a trick in my head you know I'd taken way too
38:55many run-ups at it and I was really struggling to get over it it would be so good today
38:59to get it
38:59done because I think it would it would finish the project exactly how we want to finish it as well
39:03on such a high but I just don't really know
39:27I was coming in today and thinking to myself I think we should just leave this because I knew I
39:33was gonna have a meltdown trying to do it but um it's cool after months of planning and filming
39:42all of Danny's dreams finally came true in one of the most ambitious riding films ever enter Danny's
39:49mind and enjoy Imaginate
40:22you're listening to Iowa Spy Radio it's a chilly evening upstairs but here's a great song to get you

44:12bye
44:13l
46:20It's a massive production compared to anything he's done before.
46:23It did work.
46:24It has worked.
46:25We've seen the evidence.
46:28He loves it.
46:29There's no doubt about that.
46:31I'm just pleased that he's doing something he loves doing.
46:40Now that the project's over, all I want to do is just chill out in Glasgow.
46:47I could go, I could kind of go lie on a beach somewhere, but it's really sort of hanging out
46:51and just riding with friends that makes me happy, so that's what I'll do.
47:01I can't see that you're running faster.
47:04I can't see that you're running faster, running from some kind of disaster in your life.
47:16I can't see that.
47:19I can't see that you're running faster, but I can't see that you're running faster.
47:25I could go.
47:26You're running faster.
47:35Yeah, your mama and daddy don't know you
47:38Why everybody's trying to show you why you're not
47:48So you're packing your bags and leaving
47:57You
