In this video we attend the opening reception of the exhibition Destiny is a Rose: The Eileen Harris Collection at Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles. Eileen Harris Norton, a collector known for supporting women artists, artists of color, and those from California, marks 50 years of collecting with the exhibition ‘Destiny Is a Rose’ at Hauser & Wirth. Opening with her first 1976 purchase from Ruth Waddy, the show presents over 80 works—including pieces by Mark Bradford, Kerry James Marshall, David Hammons, Lorraine O’Grady, Betye Saar, Amy Sherald, Kara Walker, and Carrie Mae Weems—spanning paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Structured in chronological chapters, it traces her evolving focus from local Los Angeles artists to global perspectives and a sustained emphasis on artists of African descent.
