Washington has signed a new weapon on offense with former Tampa Bay running back Rashaad White.
Transcript
00:00Washington yesterday signed running back Rashad White.
00:03This was one that always kind of made sense to happen.
00:08I like Bill a lot.
00:12Bill, only a rookie.
00:13You can obviously develop.
00:15There's nothing that prevents a player from developing.
00:19I'm not sure Bill cannot be a good receiving running back.
00:26He can catch passes out of the backfield.
00:28But I know an area that he struggled last season was in pass pro as a running back.
00:34And it's awfully hard to be the good receiving running back
00:37if they don't trust you to be on the field when they're going to throw the ball.
00:40You know, I say you have two jobs before you run the ball.
00:43Protect the quarterback, protect the ball.
00:45If you don't do that, then you're going to have problems.
00:47But I think he will develop into that.
00:50I agree.
00:52However, Rashad White's already that.
00:54Yeah, he will knock your stuff in the dirt.
00:56Yeah.
00:57And he will catch it out the backfield.
00:59He can do a lot of different things.
01:01And he also played with Jay.
01:03Exactly.
01:03Young guy.
01:04Just turned 27 in January.
01:06And in four seasons with the Bucs, two seasons, he went over 1,000 yards from scrimmage.
01:12In 2023, he went for 1,500 total yards with nine touchdowns.
01:17In 2024, another nine-touchdown season.
01:19Just crept over that 1,000-yard mark with 1,006 yards.
01:22In all four seasons in Tampa, went for at least 40 catches.
01:28In three of those, at least 50.
01:31Last year, he kind of got phased out because Bucky Irving emerged.
01:36Yeah.
01:36And this is not – this is like the exact signings I wanted to see.
01:41They went top of market for one dude in OA, and now they are filling out the roster with
01:45multi-year guaranteed money contracts for a whole bunch of young players that will be
01:51part of this thing going forward.
01:52I like the White signing.
01:54This one's not a shocker.
01:55There were lots of connections there anyway.
01:57Also, you let C-Rod walk.
01:59You have one running back on the roster.
02:02It's pretty clear they were going to do something.
02:03And I know people love to get angsty and impatient even in fluid, evolving situations.
02:11It's a good sign.
02:12Hey, man.
02:14What's the first regular season game?
02:17I believe September 12th or 13th.
02:19That's when I really care about how the roster is filled out.
02:21Not today.
02:23But I hear you.
02:24However, you've got to continue to add in this process, right?
02:27Yeah, and they will.
02:28I mean, that's the mindset you have to do.
02:30I'm just saying, you mentioned the people that like to have all this angst.
02:34It's too early for angst.
02:35Too early for angst.
02:36You know?
02:37You still have free agency going on.
02:41Then you have a draft.
02:43There are going to be people released in June.
02:45So it's still time to build the roster.
02:48Who should have angst?
02:50Our buddy White Brian with his Auburn Tigers.
02:52Because I don't think they're getting in the tournament.
02:54They lost by 10 to Tennessee yesterday.
02:55He already knew that.
02:56They're 17 and 16.
02:58They're not getting in.
02:59They shouldn't get in.
03:00A 20-0 run in the second half.
03:02They were up by 10.
03:03I can pull a five-man team together right now with us.
03:07We'll get in before them.
03:10Maybe.
03:11Hey, man.
03:11We got our five.
03:12You led the league.
03:13I led the country.
03:14You led the country in three-point shooting.
03:16You know?
03:17Indisputable.
03:18That is indisputable.
03:19Hold on.
03:20It's indisputable.
03:21Ben, what are you going to be?
03:23Ben's a hustle effort guy.
03:25Yeah, no.
03:25I'm a grit, get steals, run in transition.
03:28We're a great fundamentals kind of team, Brian.
03:32I have to rethink this.
03:34We may not get in there either.
03:35You're a back-to-the-basket, just powerful.
03:37Oh, no, no.
03:37I'm shooting threes.
03:40Shooting threes and shooting elbows into each side.
03:42That's all.
03:42I believe that.
03:43I think our greatest skill as a basketball unit between the five of us would be fouling.
03:48I think we would...
03:49Listen, I can promise you this.
03:52Bam Adebayo's not scoring 83 on us.
03:54I promise you not.
03:55Bam Adebayo's going to the floor.
03:56My foul on the first person...
03:59Will set the tone.
03:59Will set the tone for the other guys to not come that way again.
04:02Yeah.
04:02Yeah.
04:03I'm taking you out.
04:04I mean...
04:05Joey, no, you're not on the team.
04:07Every time we start talking about stuff, Joey, he's just hitting it.
04:09I mean, Joey's what, 5'7"?
04:12He said he's the microwave guy off the bench.
04:15Vernon Maxwell?
04:17Now, Strober's 5'6", but he's at least in shape.
04:21Joey can't score a basket.
04:23I take it to the bucket, too, JP.
04:24I'm not afraid of contact.
04:26I'll go to the rim.
04:27Strober, I believe you, but you're still 5'6".
04:29We're not playing on a six-foot goal, man.
04:30It don't matter.
04:32Heart over height all day.
04:34Does Stallion have any hoop game?
04:36No.
04:37What do you mean?
04:38Of course I do.
04:39He was a blimp before.
04:40He don't know nothing about no hoop.
04:42When did you get fat?
04:44It was really bad during COVID.
04:46That's when we worked with you.
04:47So, yeah.
04:48It was really bad then.
04:49In high school, were you fat?
04:50I mean, I was chubbier, but I still play in high school.
04:52What sports did you play in high school?
04:54I was a varsity baseball player all four years.
04:56You played varsity baseball as a freshman?
04:58Yes, as a freshman.
04:59There's some athleticism.
05:00There's some athleticism there.
05:01Played on the golf team as well.
05:02Listen.
05:03He played golf and baseball.
05:04He's not a basketball player.
05:05Played football for a little bit.
05:07We think we're going to have Jeff back next week.
05:08Guard and tackle.
05:09We love Jeff.
05:10We're thinking of Jeff.
05:11Yeah.
05:12When we form our basketball team, we need Jeff.
05:15Because Jeff's 6'1 and pretty athletic and now has lost all the weight.
05:20I'm sorry, Ben.
05:21You could be our sixth man.
05:24No, man.
05:25Joey's ain't a sixth man.
05:26That's disrespectful.
05:27Joey is our seventh man.
05:29Joey is our tenth man.
05:31We're going to play some people that can't be seen before Joey getting there.
05:34We got to be honest.
05:35If it's the three shows on the fan, the junks would be the leader in the clubhouse for a
05:40hoops game.
05:41Bishop played college basketball.
05:43And he's 6'5 or whatever.
05:44Yeah, but he got bad back.
05:46I'm checking him.
05:48Elbowing him in his back.
05:48Yo, he would put a four on the bishops back leader.
05:53I'm telling you.
06:18We can score, but we might just be like, all right, we're going to let Danny get his.
06:22Nobody else is scoring, and I'd feel pretty comfortable.
06:25We'll put Ben on Danny.
06:27He'll nat him with that.
06:29I'd be playing for Grant and Danny.
06:31Yeah, that's part.
06:32All right, that's right.
06:33Minus 16.
06:33Well, I'll check him.
06:36I'll check him.
06:37I think we let B guard Danny, and then I think we're good.
06:41I think we're good.
06:43I'm cooking you, JP.
06:44I'm old.
06:45I'm washed.
06:46You're not.
06:49All right.
06:50Back to Rashad White.
06:51I don't know how the hell we landed there.
06:52Oh, man.
06:54We do that a lot.
06:58I like the signing, and I think the concern of-
07:02I could have did it at 1 o'clock, though.
07:04Yeah, I wouldn't have minded.
07:05I'm just going to send a message.
07:08It's okay if y'all do it during our show.
07:11It's like you wait until our show ends, then you say, now let's sign the person.
07:15Now, the good part is they're doing their media avails in the morning, so a lot of these
07:19guys are talking or will talk, and we'll be able to get some of those clips and kind
07:22of how they view themselves in the Washington system.
07:26I'm just messing with them.
07:27We might even be able to get some of them on the show.
07:29Because you said it yesterday.
07:30You say, oh, they'll probably sign something right after the show.
07:33Yeah.
07:33And bam, yes, they did.
07:35But certainly, I think, if you're Washington, let's just run through this, dude.
07:41I'm reading this from my guy, Jay Daniels, MVP, who is a really useful Twitter follow for
07:47those that cover the commanders or care about the commanders.
07:52To date, they have signed Odafa Owe, Chigakonkwo, Leo Chenal, Nick Cross, Rashad White, Amik
08:00Robertson, Kalevon Chason, Tim Settle, and Charles Omenohu.
08:05Now, Omenohu, we didn't really discuss because that happened, I don't even know which night
08:11that happened.
08:12That happened Wednesday night.
08:13Wednesday night.
08:14And that was largely viewed as like a depth piece, but he's a guy that's had some pretty
08:19useful seasons.
08:20He had a seven-sack season in Kansas City back in 23.
08:24I read somewhere, I think he might have had like a league discipline issue, but you know,
08:31you take your discipline and you move forward.
08:36Just from a size thing, 6'5", 280, played his college football at Texas.
08:40But those guys are the ones that solidify your team and make your team better.
08:45Yeah.
08:45Because the starters can't play every minute.
08:47And when the starters go off the field, you don't want the production to drop off, just
08:53drop out the bottom, have the bottom drop out.
08:56So, he's a guy who can keep it up a little bit.
08:59A lot of those guys, you know, they're going to be able to keep their production up.
09:02Because you have a rotation, we've been seeing rotations.
09:05Durante Jones has been saying he wants a lot of guys that can move around with some level
09:09of versatility.
09:10You have everybody playing at about 95% or higher when they're on the field.
09:15You can have a lot of good plays.
09:17For sure.
09:18I texted Doc.
09:19I was driving home yesterday, and I was back and forth between Grant and Danny and Doc.
09:27And Doc had a caller call in, and I thought this was so funny.
09:32Somebody, maybe it was Haney, somebody asked Doc, Doc, what do you think is going on with
09:36Brandon Iyuk, why do you think the Niners won't just release him?
09:40And I quote from the great Rick Doc Walker, because they don't like him, because he's
09:45a jackass.
09:48But I don't understand, like, people, you got to realize what they're doing is what he did
09:56in a sense to them.
09:59They're being petty.
10:00They're playing games.
10:02They could have let him go a while ago.
10:03They could have said, we're letting you go, and then put the June 1st stipulation on it.
10:09They haven't let him go at all.
10:11But they claim they were going to let him go as soon as this new league start.
10:15But they don't have to.
10:16Well, the new league year has started, but we're going to cut them in the new league year.
10:20Doesn't necessarily mean day one.
10:22I mean, eventually it'll happen because they're going to have to get it off their books.
10:26But they don't care at this point.
10:30Well, and at the same time, with Brandon Iyuk, they can at least, it is a, as much as of
10:40a
10:40facade can be legitimate, they have like a legitimate facade in that, hey, we're waiting
10:46to see if somebody will give us a pick.
10:47Yeah.
10:48Hey, we'll take a conditional sixth.
10:50Again, I don't think anyone's going to do that because if you trade for Iyuk, you also
10:54trade for the contract.
10:56Yeah.
10:56And if you look at the contract, his base salary in 27 goes to $28 million.
11:01But didn't all the guarantees already get voided?
11:04Yes.
11:05Because he didn't.
11:06But then you're still acquiring the contract, which this year is kind of doable with a $14
11:10million cap number with the voided guarantees.
11:13But the contract would stipulate that in 2027, he's due $27 million and carries a $41 million
11:19cap number.
11:20Nobody's trading for that.
11:21No.
11:21So that's why it's nonsense.
11:23Like wherever he lands, nobody's taking on that deal.
11:26But that's fine.
11:28I did want to present this because I've talked to people I know and trust that cover the Niners.
11:34I think, are we getting Matt Mayoko next week?
11:37Matt Mayoko's covered the Niners a long time.
11:39And he and I texted yesterday about Brandon Iyuk and we'll have him on the show Monday.
11:45But there's a dude, Monday at noon, thank you.
11:47There's a dude named Grant Cohn that covers the Niners.
11:51And it's worth saying, this dude is like a known agitator.
11:56He practices journalism in a very different way.
12:16Iyuk got injured.
12:17Iyuk rehabbed away from the team.
12:18The 49ers found a loophole in the contract that allowed them to get out of it if he rehabbed
12:22away from the team.
12:23The Niners voided his guarantees.
12:26Iyuk rejoined the team and spent training camp preseason in the first few weeks showing
12:29everyone that he's ready and willing to play.
12:31The Niners didn't play him because they wanted to get out of the contract.
12:34Realizing he played his final game with the Niners, Iyuk left the team.
12:37The Niners currently are holding him hostage because they're afraid he will play well for
12:41the Commanders.
12:43There's some plausibility to that.
12:45But this dude also hates Kyle.
12:47So there may be an axe to grind here too.
12:50But I mean, all that could be true, but still, you still have to wonder why he didn't try
12:58to get some of his money back.
12:59Fight for it.
13:01That's just the one thing that I'm still stuck with.
13:05And maybe we'll find that answer out one day.
13:07That I despise him so much, I felt I thought I was going to have to touch him, one of
13:12them,
13:12so I had to get out of there.
13:13That may be the case.
13:14The case.
13:14The case.
