00:00So, what was it about Naomi Alderman's novel that was kind of appealing to you when, when, when, was it,
00:06was it presented to you as a script first or did you, or did somebody tell you to read the
00:09book or?
00:10No, it was, it was pitched to me by producer Frida Torres Blanco, who, who was a partner of Rachel
00:20Weiss, and, and I just loved the sound of it, you know?
00:23This idea of this very unique love triangle and happening in this very strict community, in this very unknown secretive
00:39world, I just felt immediately attracted to it.
00:42And the fact that Rachel Weiss was going to play Ronit was also one of the things that, um, made
00:49me say yes quite, quite, quite, uh, rapidly.
00:54What is it about, um, writing or directing female characters that are trying to assert their identity within a community
01:03of people that probably don't want to acknowledge it and stuff like that?
01:06Like, you did it in Fantastic Woman, I'm just curious. Like, what is it about that kind of idea that
01:11makes you want to make movies about these, these types of people?
01:14Well, I, I don't know. I, I guess I connect with them because, um, they are making use of the
01:20power to disobey, you know?
01:23And there's something about that that I, that I connect with. And as well, uh, the idea of taking characters,
01:30in this case female characters,
01:31that are somehow in, on the fringes of societies or of narratives and, and put them in the, in the
01:37absolute center and, and create this, um, hopefully complex portraits,
01:43like cubist portraits, where they have the chance to go through the entire emotional spectrum and see them fall down
01:50and then stand up again.
01:52There's something about that that really moves me. And, uh, it's, it's not coming from a rational place, but I'm,
01:57I'm just very, very moved.
01:58There's something about that.
