00:00I can't think of an easier solution for a gift than buying someone a gift card.
00:04If you agree with me, just make sure you're buying them online and not at the display rack in the
00:09store.
00:10Why? Scammers.
00:11According to the HuffPost, scammers will temper the packaging to take off any film strip,
00:16record the gift card and PIN number, and then cover up their tampering.
00:20Kathy Stokes, director of fraud prevention programs with AARP,
00:24says that then, scammers set up a computer program that has an algorithm that follows those cards,
00:31and whenever the tempered cards are activated and money is put into them,
00:35scammers are able to drain the funds off the card.
00:39Huh, and all you wanted to do was get someone a thoughtful gift card.
00:43Do it, but do it online, or get those that are under the watchful eye of an employee,
00:47because there's no guarantee that you will be able to get the money back from a retailer.
