00:00A new digital identity system is being developed by the government in order to
00:05make it easier to access public services on a smartphone. Ministers say the
00:10voluntary scheme could allow people to prove who they are online and manage
00:15tasks such as tax, childcare or other services through a single app. The
00:21Cabinet Office says the technology could reduce paperwork and save taxpayers
00:25money. An eight-week public consultation has begun to shape how the system will
00:30work. Opposition parties warned that it could become an expensive project or lead
00:35to privacy concerns. Ministers insist it will remain optional and that people will
00:40still be able to use traditional documents if they prefer.
