00:02There have been heartbreaking scenes off the Illawarra Coast today, with two people
00:06dying after being pulled from the water unresponsive. Emergency crews have told us they were called
00:12to Shell Harbour South Beach, which is about 20 kilometres south of Wollongong, and it's
00:17a beautiful line of coast, and one of the most charming little beaches that we have
00:22in the region. There was a massive response to the call for help with police, ambulance
00:29officers, the helicopter was sent down and fire brigades as well. Unfortunately, the
00:35man and woman who we've now been told were visiting the region from the UK were not responsive
00:41when they were pulled from the water. It's understood they became stuck in a rip when
00:46they got into a bit of trouble. Police this afternoon have praised the bravery and the
00:51response of two nurses who were off duty and were walking along the beach at the time and
00:58another man who quickly entered the water and pulled them from the water and immediately
01:04started performing CPR. Unfortunately, they died at the scene.
01:09The police have again used this situation to remind the public to only swim between the
01:16flags at beaches. This was an unpatrolled beach. There is a patrolled beach not too far,
01:21but the tragedy is here only being compounded by the fact that this UK couple's family members
01:28were on the beach at the time as well. So police again reminding the community and people who
01:35have family visiting to remember to swim between the flags. The conditions were a little bit choppy,
01:41but the safety message can't be reinforced enough here from police today. Swim between the flags
01:48and as they continue their investigations, a report will be prepared for the coroner.
