The Bergen Arches, previously called the Bergen Archways or Eerie Cut, are bridges that cross over a once-active rail-trench from the 1900s that connected passengers to New York City through the Pavonia Terminal in Jersey City, according to the BAPC website.

But now, roughly 117 years later, BAPC wants to reimagine the space “to stitch” communities together.

00:00Do you want more green space options in Jersey City?
00:03If yes, that's exactly what the Bergen Arches Preservation Coalition is working on doing.
00:09Our organization focuses on making the Bergen Arches an active greenway
00:14that connects to the Essex Hudson Greenway and the 6th Street Embankment.
00:17But we also focus on creating this education around the arches,
00:21being that not many people know it exists.
00:23Many people who have lived in Jersey City their whole lives
00:25don't even know it's right below them
00:27with this great opportunity to become a potential bikeway or greenway
00:31or something even bigger than that.
00:33I think this will create a sort of bigger movement
00:36of activating green space that already exists in Jersey City.
00:40If you look at a Google Earth map,
00:42you'll notice there is a lot of green space.
00:44It's just not accessible.
00:45Taking these already existing green spaces and activating them
00:49will sort of build it into the urban fabric
00:52and then also activate all this green space
00:55that is lacking in Journal Square and throughout the city.
00:57We hope to build out a mini-museum.
01:00We have elements related to rail history,
01:02conservation, the neighborhood.
01:04There is a huge amount of thought and research
01:06that the city has put into this,
01:07that volunteers have put into this.
01:09We are here and excited to talk about all of that.
01:11Learn more in the link in our bio.
