00:52Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Telesu Studios in Caracas, Venezuela. We begin with the
00:58news.
01:12Venezuela's Acting President de los RodrĂguez led a working meeting with the Directors of PetrĂłleos de Venezuela and the Council
01:17of Deputy Ministers of the Ministry of Popular Power for Hydrocarbons.
01:21The meeting aimed to revise strategic lines of action to strengthen national production.
01:25The planning session also sought to strengthen trade alliances with international partners in order to consolidate the nation's growth as
01:33an energy powerhouse.
01:34Venezuela is currently considered the nation with the largest certified oil reserves on the planet with more than 300 billion
01:40barrels of oil and is on its way to becoming the fourth largest producer of natural gas in the world.
01:51The National Assembly of Venezuela approved the draft organic mining law in its first reading. A qualified majority of parliament
01:58voted in favor of the regulation that was presented by Deputy Orlando Camacho.
02:02This legal instrument comes in response to a request from Acting President de los RodrĂguez, who requested that the National
02:09Parliament work quickly on drafting mining legislation. The main objective of the draft organic mining law will be to promote
02:15national and international investment in the country's mining sector.
02:25The coordinator of the peace programs at Murulimo Niñere Foundation, Francis Niñere, in the same interview with Telesur express his
02:33interest in having strong relations with countries in the region, such as Venezuela and Brazil.
02:40We are going to have a very strong relationship with people from global south, including Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil and other
02:53countries here.
02:55So, it's a time, we see that it's a time to rethink and revive our relationship so as to overcome
03:07this struggle that we have been experiencing for a long, long time.
03:17Additionally, Niñere, they highlight the peace and beauty of Venezuela, which contradicts the image portrayed by Western media.
03:22As I arrived here, I see people smiling. It's peaceful. I've been around the city enjoying seeing how Caracas beautiful
03:41it is in different the way Western media portrays.
03:49Last Sunday's legislative elections in Colombia revealed significant inequality in female representation among the different political parties.
03:57The historic pact is the political group with the highest percentage of women in the Senate, with 43.3%
04:02of its senators being women.
04:03The historic pact's total of 25 senators includes 13 women, making them the only political force with a female majority.
04:09On the other hand, radical change will have no female senators and the Alliance for Colombia will have only one.
04:16The new Congress, which will take office in the 2026-2030 term, highlights a clear gender disparity in the legislative
04:23sphere,
04:23where only the ruling party has considered including women in its parliamentary group.
04:37And in the capital city of Mexico, the collapse of a building undergoing demolition on Calzada Tlalpan resulted in one
04:44death and two people trapped under robo, according to preliminary reports.
04:48The accident occurred while workers were performing tasks on the third floor of the structure, which had been damaged by
04:53the earthquakes of 1985 and 2017.
04:56In this regard, emergency teams managed to rescue one worker who was hospitalized with serious injuries, while the authorities evacuated
05:0257 people from the area,
05:04to allow rescuers and canine units to continue the search for the missing ones among the ruins of concrete and
05:09meadow.
05:10Although some neighbors claim that the vibrations from the construction work for the upcoming World Cup may have contributed to
05:16the incident,
05:17the capital city government ruled out any connection between the incident and the construction work.
05:28Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had a telephone conversation on Monday with her Brazilian counterpart Lula da Silva to discuss the
05:35progress of various cooperation projects.
05:37According to the Mexican President, during the dialogue, joint initiatives in areas such as economic, development, education and science were
05:44reviewed.
05:45For his part, the President of Brazil said he reiterated his invitation to President Sheinbaum to make an official visit
05:51to Brazil between June and July of this year.
05:54The President also proposed organizing a business meeting to bring together representatives of the private sector from both nations.
06:07In Brazil, thousands of women and their allies took to the streets across the country to mark International Women's Day,
06:13with demonstrations continuing throughout the month.
06:16In Recife, activists, unions and social movements also mobilized to raise awareness about human rights.
06:22Our correspondent Brian Mir has more.
06:27Thousands of women and their allies came out to the streets of dozens of cities in Brazil on March 8th
06:32to remember International Women's Day.
06:34But across the country, the protests will continue throughout the month.
06:37On March 9th, a large group of activists, union members and social movements came out to the streets of Recife
06:43to remember International Women's Day and raise awareness for women's rights.
06:49As feminist, socialist women, we believe that there can be no revolution and the capitalist system cannot be overcome without
06:57collective mobilization.
06:59So beyond International Women's Day, which was on March 8th, we are going to be raising feminist demands during the
07:07whole month of March.
07:10The strategy behind coming to the streets on other days during the month is to motivate the public to understand
07:16that the rights that women are fighting for are ongoing and shouldn't be reserved to talk about during a single
07:21day of the year.
07:22Holding the rally on March 9th, for example, guaranteed two days of coverage of the issues in the local media.
07:30We are on the streets to affirm our fight for rights. Against violence, against feminicide and against this patriarchal society
07:38that doesn't want to see us alive.
07:41We have to denounce all forms of violence. We have to mobilize and demand that our whole society makes a
07:46commitment to respect women and guarantee our rights.
07:52Every year during the month of March, Brazilian women work to raise awareness of a series of rights that have
07:57yet to be guaranteed.
07:59But the most important theme of the marches and protests this year is to end violence against women.
08:05Brazil is the fifth most violent country in the world for women. This is unacceptable. We have several demands, including
08:13an end to the six-day work week and the fight for reproductive rights.
08:17But this year, our main demand is to end all forms of violence against women, including sexism and racism.
08:25We women are diverse, but we are on the streets because we can't be ignored.
08:31This year, in remembrance of International Women's Day, Brazil's federal government took special actions to arrest over 5,000 men
08:38with outstanding warrants for domestic violence.
08:42Brian Meir, TELASUR, Recife.
08:46We have our short break. We're going to stay right back.
09:09Welcome back.
09:10U.S. President Donald Trump announced a temporary suspension of certain oil sanctions with the aim of stabilizing crude oil
09:15prices.
09:16During a press conference in Miami in southern U.S., the president explained that the measure would remain in effect
09:21until the market showed signs of stabilizing.
09:24In recent days, Treasury Secretary Scott Peasant indicated that the U.S. government is also considering easing sanctions on Russian
09:30oil to improve global supply.
09:32Some experts see this as a sign that plans against Iran are not working as Washington had hoped.
09:44And resistance against the White House is also growing within the United States.
09:48Business leaders have joined forces with tax authorities to oppose the 15% general tariff announced by President Donald Trump.
09:54The non-profit law firm Liberty Justice Center has filed a new lawsuit in the United States Court of International
10:01Trade on behalf of a certain group of companies challenging the 15% tariff imposed by the government.
10:07The lawsuit is led by spice and e-commerce companies with extensive experience in tariff litigation.
10:12In addition to these new setback claims for the compensation for $166 billion in tariffs that the Supreme Court has
10:20already annulled, remain in force.
10:29An unbounded, the United States Justice Department began the jury selection process for the trial of four men accused of
10:35conspiring to assassinate Haitian President Jonel MoĂŻse in 2021.
10:40Investigations revealed that the plan was devised in southern Florida where financial and logistical support was arranged to overthrow MoĂŻse
10:47in exchange for future government contracts.
10:49Arcangel Pretel Ortiz, Antonio Intriago, Walter Ventimilla and James Solagues are allegedly accused of the assassination.
10:58Four others implicated in the plot pled innocent.
11:01One of the defendants is aware in trial due to the medical reasons and five others have already been sentenced
11:06to life in prison in the United States after admitting their guilt.
11:09The judicial process is advancing in U.S. territory but the investigation in Haiti remains slow due to the ongoing
11:15violence and collapse of the judicial system.
11:31In Ecuador, at least 2,500 people were affected in the Esmeraldas province after four rivers overflowed due to intense
11:38winter rains.
11:39According to authorities, the rains registered in the country have claimed four lives since this first month of 2016.
11:45They also indicated that at least 1,000 hectares of crops were flooded, especially cacao plantations, one of the most
11:51important for the local economy.
11:53Given the situation, several provinces in the country remained under a state of regional emergency for 90 days due to
11:59the rainy season.
12:00It should be noted that as of March 8th, 40,285 people had been affected nationwide and 15 had been
12:07injured in various events such as floods, landslides and heavy rains, among others.
12:34Human rights organizations have presented a devastating report documenting the catastrophic and differential impact that the Israeli genocide in Gaza
12:42has caused.
12:42Palestinian women and girls.
12:44These organizations conclude that it is a deliberate and systematic destruction of the minimum conditions necessary for living and giving
12:51life.
12:51The reproductive health system has been decimated.
12:5660% of care points are out of action.
12:59Devastating consequences range from premature birth to the death of newborns, not to mention the depression and trauma of the
13:06mothers, according to the United Nations.
13:08In 2025, Israel deliberately and systematically destroyed the sexual and reproductive health system.
13:13Additionally, they maintain the blockade of medical assistance to women and girls who suffer from serious and degenerative illnesses.
13:28Now for our second break, don't go away.
13:53Welcome back.
13:54In Lebanon, Israeli attacks have killed nearly 500 civilians and caused more than 667,000 forced displacements.
14:01The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported another 1,313 people were injured during the Israeli bomb in sub-civilian
14:08areas.
14:09Meanwhile, rescue teams continue to remove debris in the suburbs of Beirut, searching for survivors or bodies, which could increase
14:15the number of victims.
14:16Since the beginning of March, Tel Aviv has carried out several airstrikes against the capital city and other nearby areas
14:22causing an escalation of violence in the Middle East region.
14:31Meanwhile, Iran carried out the 33rd defensive wave of Operation True Promise 4 against targets in Israel on Tuesday.
14:38This operation dedicated to Moshtaba Khamenei, the new Ayatollah he targets in Tel Aviv, where it caused much destruction.
14:45Reports from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard also confirmed that the missiles reached the 5th Fleet, based in the Persian Gulf.
14:52In this regard, the spokesman for the Revolutionary Guard, Sader Nayini, said this morning that all U.S. military infrastructure
14:59in the region has been destroyed.
15:01Minutes earlier, Kamal Qarasi, foreign policy advisor to the Supreme Leader, said in an interview that it is they who
15:08set the timing of this war.
15:15Iranian President Masoud Peshkamp denied that his country was behind the ballistic missiles recently intercepted in Turkish territory.
15:22The statement was made during a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who reiterated that his country is
15:28not involved in the conflicts in the region,
15:30and warned that any violation of airspace is unacceptable.
15:34According to the Turkish Ministry of Defense, NATO-linked defense systems intercepted two missiles detected near the Incirlik Air Base
15:41and in the province of Gaziantep.
15:43The Iranian leader assured that the missiles were not launched by Iranian forces and announced the opening of an investigation
15:49to clarify what happened.
15:56An Iranian government warns the United States that it will not allow oil to pass through the Strait of Hormuz,
16:02while Washington raises the stakes and insists that it will carry out more powerful attacks against Iran.
16:07The spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Sader Nayini, was categorical in affirming that the blockade will remain in
16:14place
16:14on to further notice, not only for the United States. According to the spokesman, the countries of Europe will also
16:20be affected,
16:21as they will be required to expel the representatives of the United States and Israel by numerous oil tankers await
16:26in the Persian Gulf.
16:27The price of crude oil has not fallen below the $90 per barrel threshold since Washington and Tel Aviv decided
16:34to attack Iran unilaterally amidst the indirect dialogues in Switzerland.
16:44At least one person died and eight others were injured in a counter-offensive attack by Iran,
16:49a building housing U.S. troops in the capital of Bahrain, Manama.
16:52The Iranian land, air and naval forces carried out the largest strong attack on U.S. military bases in the
16:58country.
16:59The operations have impacted centers of troop concentration and equipment depots in U.S. camps and hotels where military personnel
17:05reside,
17:06both in Kuwait and in Bahrain, as part of actions directed at installations used against its territory.
17:12Iran recently expressed that it does not consider neighboring countries as adversaries and they do not constitute a target in
17:19themselves,
17:20but it is only using its right to self-defense after Israel and the United States bombarded civilian areas of
17:25the country.
17:31On Monday, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage of Iran denounced the destruction and severe damage to historical monuments
17:37caused by the attacks of the United States and Israel, which began on February 28th.
17:42Among the affected sites in the territory are the Golestan Palace and the Grand Mosque of Isfahan,
17:48both recognized by UNESCO as protected sites of humanity.
17:51The government has condemned these attacks as a direct assault on civilization and the world's historical memory.
17:57Given the gravity of the situation, the authorities have requested the urgent intervention of the United Nations and UNESCO
18:03to send experts to evaluate the damage to the prehistoric valleys.
18:07For its part, UNESCO has already expressed its concern about the damage reported in Tehran,
18:12where the breakage of stained glass and ancient structures was confirmed.
18:23Tensions in the Middle East continue to be a source of international concern because of their impact on the civilian
18:28population
18:29and their potential effect on the global energy market.
18:31According to a report by several human rights organizations,
18:34Israeli forces allegedly used white-furforced ammunition in bombings on March 3rd in southern Lebanon.
18:40The report is based on images and multimedia that allegedly show explosions of this incendiary agent overpopulated areas.
18:47Japanese authorities report that the recent attack have left 100 deaths and more than half a million people displaced,
18:54further exacerbating the country's humanitarian crisis.
19:04U.S. media confirms the discovery of new clues implicating the United States in the attack on an Iranian school
19:09where 168 girls were killed.
19:12Citing experts, U.S. media outlets reported that fragments of the projectile that struck the Iranian school belonged to a
19:17U.S. cruise missile.
19:18For this part, the Iranian agency aligned with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard said that Tehran has identified the perpetrators of
19:24the bombing against civilian targets,
19:26their countries of origin, and the air bases from which they were sent.
19:29On February 28th, the United States and Israel jointly attacked Iran,
19:33and in retaliation the Persian nations responded against U.S. targets in the region.
19:53And a recent poll in the United States reveals that 54% of U.S. citizens disapprove of the White
19:59House administration's current foreign policy measures,
20:01highlighted an increase in discontent among the population.
20:05Only 41% of those surveys supported military offensive in Iran,
20:09a remarkably low rate compared to the 87% who supported former President George Bush's operation in Afghanistan in 2001.
20:16The significant rejection suggests clear dissatisfaction with the Trump administration's direction and disregard for citizens' concerns.
20:30And China reiterates its active participation in mediation efforts to reduce tensions in Western Asia.
20:36Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guao Ya-kun confirmed that telephone conversations will help with the foreign ministers of other countries
20:42to exchange views on the current situation.
20:44He also assured that Beijing will continue to communicate with all relevant parties, including those directly involved in the conflict,
20:50in order to seek mediation between the nations.
20:53Guao Ya-kun stated that any military action must cease to prevent an escalation,
20:57and thus avoid regional instability and hinder economic development.
21:08And in China, the two sessions are still underway,
21:11where thousands of representatives from across the country are deliberating on the government's economic and social goals for the next
21:17five-year plan.
21:18Bruno Falsi, our correspondent, has more.
21:23Greetings, comrades. I'm reporting from Beijing.
21:26Here, where during the fourth session of the 14 National People's Congress at the Great Hall of the People,
21:34the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Han Jun, highlighted China's progress in poverty reduction over the last five years.
21:44Seven million people, at risk of falling back into poverty, received support from the state,
21:52and the per capita disposable income of farmers in more than 800 privileges in poverty,
21:59localities grew by more than 8% annually, exceeding the national average.
22:07The gap of urban and rural areas continues to narrow, and urban-rural integration is steadily progressing.
22:16The minister also spoke about the upcoming challenge for rural development.
22:23Let's listen now to his remarks.
22:27Generally speaking, our agricultural and rural modernization is still relatively behind.
22:32During the 15-5-year plan period, we will respond to farmers' aspirations for a better life by pulling various
22:38forests and resources.
22:39This year marks the first year after the transition period, in which support is being transferred through a standardized assistance
22:45mechanism.
22:46The Paris Central Committee has already made comprehensive arrangements to establish a coordinated and routine mechanism to prevent people from
22:54falling back into poverty.
22:55Our agricultural and rural world departments will proceed steadily, step by step.
23:00These advances and plans for the coming years are being discussed at the two sessions, China's most important annual political
23:11event,
23:11where nearly 5,000 representatives from all provinces and the 56 ethnic groups are meeting at the Great Hall of
23:22the People,
23:22the seat of the National People's Congress, until Thursday to deliberate on the country's major economic and social policies.
23:35China has consolidated its achievement in poverty reduction and will continue to promote rural development aiming to meet farmers' aspiration
23:47for a better life.
23:49With this report, from here, the capital of China will return with you in the studios.
23:58Welcome to the end of this news break.
