00:03As Iran's women's football team lost their final match in the Asian Cup, tensions reached a boiling point.
00:09Save our girls, let them go, just some of the slogans chanted by supporters amid growing fears for the players'
00:17safety if they return to Iran.
00:19We were telling them that if they want to stay in Australia, we would support them.
00:24But I think, well I'm sure of that, that they're being threatened with their family's safety in Iran.
00:30That's why they refuse to answer back to us.
00:32Australia said Monday that five of the players had sought and been granted asylum.
00:37But now, as an Australia, as a nation, we can be really welcoming to those women and make clear that
00:45for the remaining members of the team, if they want to make a similar decision, Australia has already opened a
00:52tarts to this team.
00:54The announcement came after mounting calls to protect the team.
00:57Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Australia to take them in, warning it would be a terrible humanitarian mistake
01:05not to.
01:07Trump joined a growing chorus of voices calling on Australia to protect the team whose players were labelled wartime traitors
01:15on Iranian state TV after refusing to sing the national anthem before one of the games.
01:21The son of Iran's late Shah Reza Pahlavi, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and the Global Players Union were
01:29among those calling for the players' protection.
01:31There may be players that want to return. There may be some players within the group that would like to
01:36seek asylum, would like to stay in Australia for longer.
01:38There may be some that are incredibly concerned about the potential journey home. It's an incredibly difficult situation.
01:44According to the Australian government, the five women granted asylum were transported to a safe location.
