00:00Having landed in Normandy in early July, the battalion had already taken part in the siege
00:05of Brest and fought its way across northern France. By October, they were stationed near
00:11the village of Schoenberg in eastern Belgium, just miles from the German border. Equipped
00:16with 155mm howitzers, they provided artillery support to the 106th Infantry Division. When
00:24Germany launched its surprise counter-offensive on the 16th of December 1944 in what would
00:30become the Battle of the Bulge, the battalion found itself dangerously exposed. German forces
00:36quickly overran the area, cutting off key routes and capturing surrounding villages. Amid the
00:42confusion and retreat, several members of the 333rd were either killed or taken prisoner.
00:48Eleven soldiers managed to escape the chaos and fled on foot through the snow-covered
00:54landscape, desperately seeking refuge.
