00:00Guyana, land of water.
00:04You'll find no country more diverse in landscapes and culture.
00:10It was first colonised by the Dutch in 1753.
00:13As only the Dutch can do, they built the capital below sea level.
00:16And today from Guyana, which sits on the northeast corner of South America,
00:20we bring you the last of the five limited-overs internationals
00:23between Australia and the West Indies.
00:25The venue, the border cricket ground.
00:27Well, today we've got the usual border pitch.
00:29No grass at all, no evidence of any surface moisture.
00:32Very flat, very dry.
00:34No chance of this Pegasus ski getting into this surface at all.
00:38Head of arms.
00:42Now I'm the present on a...
00:44She has won the top.
00:46She's won it.
00:48She's won it.
00:49What are you going to do, baby?
00:50Well, I think we're going to have a bat.
00:53So here's McDermott with the first ball to Simmons.
00:59Well, no wonder he's looking with that quizzical look at the pitch.
01:04The ball just didn't come through at all.
01:06And it's Murph Hughes who will start for Australia.
01:10Desmond Haynes, the batsman.
01:14And he's got it away, and that just shows how fast and how small the ground is.
01:18It'll go to the boundary, and he really didn't hit it.
01:26It's a nice shot.
01:26It's through.
01:27And again, anything through the infield is going to go for four.
01:31This is lightning fast.
01:39That's well struck.
01:40That's another four.
01:42Beautifully struck by Haynes.
01:45Beating the offside field for his third boundary.
01:53No need to chase that.
01:55It'll bounce back a considerable way.
01:58That was a good shot.
02:05They won't stop that one.
02:08It's two short deliveries from Hughes in this over.
02:12That one wasn't really as well.
02:14That one went in the air for quite some time.
02:17But of course, safely away.
02:29Now, that is a splendid stroke.
02:32Because he picked that slow ball from Steve Waugh
02:35and still managed to square cut it.
02:37Hit it behind point.
02:41A little bit too wide.
02:43Very good slow ball, but just a little bit too wide.
02:46Too much room for the cut shot.
02:53Two good strokes from Simmons.
02:55There's nothing wrong with that delivery.
02:57He picked it up from about middle and leg
02:59and smashed it away over mid-wicket.
03:0350 up from just 78 balls.
03:09There's no need to run for that one.
03:11That's 19 off the over.
03:13A very good over for the West Indies.
03:15Not so good for Steve Waugh.
03:1776 for no wicker.
03:25That's in the air.
03:26Merv Hughes makes a very good catch.
03:28Made a very good ground to that.
03:30That's the wicket Australia needed.
03:32Peter Taylor's been very successful for Australia
03:34in one day cricket.
03:35He's done it again.
03:36Perhaps not the best ball that he's ever bowled
03:38and maybe not the best ball that's been bowled this morning.
03:41But that's a very important breakthrough for Australia.
03:43Yes, this is not a very good shot at this time.
03:46I mean, you know, they're doing quite well.
03:48As the ball is turning, it bumps a little bit.
03:51He hit it way up into the square leg
03:53and he was caught easily by Merv Hughes.
03:57Ritchie Richardson is the new batsman
03:59that comes to the wicket to join Desmond Haynes.
04:04There's Desmond Haynes, 50.
04:07Another very good innings by Desmond Haynes.
04:10He's in very fine form.
04:12He's come from 51 balls with 10 boundaries.
04:15That's his 11th 50 versus Australia.
04:17He also has 500.
04:19So his one-day record, as we've already seen,
04:21is an excellent one.
04:23Ritchie Richardson, as I said before,
04:26have been fairly successful in this one-day series
04:28by a score of 90 from Port of Spain on the 10th of March.
04:33He's been in very good form.
04:39One bounce to Mervyn Hughes
04:40and that does bring up the 100th for the West Indies.
04:49That's been boosted there as Mike Whitney puts in the chase
04:52and the dive, but all too despairing.
05:11He's been given by umpire Cumberbatch.
05:14Clyde Cumberbatch giving Desmond Haynes out.
05:17Desmond's not too excited about it.
05:21And he leaves his print on the ground,
05:24which is probably not the ideal thing to do
05:26when umpire Cumberbatch will be performing in the test match.
05:30Gordon Greenwich comes in at number four
05:32with the West Indies two for 115.
05:38There's another four from full toss.
05:51Great throw, great throw, Mark Waugh.
05:54He's got a bad arm, but he's got an accurate one.
05:58The shoulder is sore.
06:00Bounced once, hit the stumps, dead side on.
06:03Gordon Greenwich didn't even bother to look.
06:06Gosh, that was good feeling
06:08and most because he got rid of it so quickly.
06:14As soon as it was in his hand
06:16that he whipped it in with that beautiful underarm throw
06:21and it's 136 for three.
06:24Viv Richards, the newcomer to the crease
06:30and received rather a mixed reception when he came out.
06:38Well, that's a mare push down the ground
06:39and that's four runs.
06:46One bounce.
06:48That was a superb hit by Richard Sernisian.
06:50Good touch.
06:52And he ends the 30th over of the innings
06:55at 150 now for three.
06:59So Mark Waugh comes on.
07:00And his brother had a rather rough time of it early on.
07:03Three overs for 33.
07:12That's over the top.
07:13And Whitney takes it.
07:15Richards goes.
07:17So Richards caught by Whitney.
07:20Didn't quite get enough bat on it.
07:21And even though it's a short boundary,
07:23Richards goes.
07:24And the West Indies are four for 155.
07:29Gus Logie is the new batsman
07:31coming out to join Richie Richardson.
07:36Lovely shot.
07:37Four runs beautifully played by Logie.
07:41Not a particularly good ball for Mark Waugh
07:43but he flicked it away for four.
07:49And Richie Richardson gets to his 50
07:51with a lovely shot off the legs for four.
07:54Half century.
07:56There's not much margin for error for bowlers on this wicket.
08:03He's got him.
08:06Gus Logie attempting to hit straight down the ground
08:09has been beaten by McDermott.
08:12And he's out for 17.
08:18The only Guyanese player in the West Indies side
08:21and in fact in the squad
08:23for these one-day matches,
08:25Carl Hooper.
08:26This is Berv Hughes.
08:30Healy.
08:31And that is absolutely magnificent.
08:34Good anticipation.
08:36Five innings from Richie Richardson.
08:38That's six for 237.
08:40Geoffrey Dujon
08:42comes out at number eight.
08:47Should be caught.
08:49Peter Taylor.
08:51Good safe pair of hands.
08:53Carl Hooper goes.
08:54The run chase is on towards the end.
08:56Seven for 239 now.
08:57And the Australians have done very well.
08:59The new batsman is Tony Gray.
09:01Comes out to join Geoffrey Dujon.
09:06Very well done by Merv Hughes.
09:08Geoffrey Dujon goes.
09:09Another of the recognised batsmen out.
09:11And it's eight down now
09:14for 246.
09:15We have Walsh and Patterson.
09:19Still to bat for the West Indies.
09:32Just like Shelling Pease.
09:33Nine for 248.
09:35Alan Border takes the catch.
09:37And that was well bowled by McDermott.
09:38Again, change of pace.
09:40Batsman playing too early.
09:41Got the leading edge.
09:42And a thoroughly good performance
09:44from the Australian bowlers.
09:46Patrick Patterson comes out now
09:47to join Courtney Walsh
09:49who has the strike.
09:50The batsman crossed
09:51with that gentle dolly catch
09:52to Alan Border.
09:57That's the end of it
09:58at 251.
10:01252 the Australians need.
10:03An excellent performance
10:04from Merv Hughes
10:05to go with Craig McDermott.
10:09And that is an outstanding effort.
10:12Australian flag flying high there
10:14but not quite as high
10:15as the kites behind it.
10:17big kite flying country,
10:19Guyana.
10:20Especially at this time
10:21of the year around Easter.
10:24Come Easter Sunday,
10:25the sky over Georgetown
10:26will be filled with kites.
10:30Strong easterly breeze
10:31coming across the ground
10:32as Patterson now is in to Boone.
10:37He's chucked it in.
10:39Dragged it back into his thumps.
10:42So David Boone goes
10:44and Australia loses
10:45their first kick for 12.
10:49Once again,
10:49I think it was the lack of pace
10:51that did David Boone.
10:53It made his intentions clear
10:55in the last over
10:55that he was going to try
10:56and play the full shot
10:57if they were going to
10:58bang the ball in short.
11:00But he was through the shot
11:01a little early,
11:02got an underneath edge
11:03onto the stumps.
11:04So Australia won for 12.
11:07So Dean Jones
11:08coming in early
11:08as he did
11:10in the last match,
11:11the fourth one in Barbados.
11:17A no ball
11:18from Patterson
11:19and that stroke
11:20down the ground.
11:20It's very fast.
11:21It's a short boundary
11:22out there
11:23and Jones gets off the mark
11:25with four of a no ball.
11:30Oh, that's well timed.
11:33Well, that's the first
11:34scoring shot
11:35we've seen
11:35from Jeff Marsh
11:36and it's a good one.
11:38They'll come for three.
11:40Dean Jones again
11:42striking the ball
11:43with a great venom
11:45and great success.
11:48Tony Gray on the other hand
11:49with one ball left.
11:51He's already had 12 runs
11:53taken from the over.
11:57Stays at 12
11:58and that's out.
12:00Very good bit of cricket
12:01there from Tony Gray.
12:02He saw Dean Jones
12:03turn his back
12:04and walk slowly
12:05back towards the crease.
12:06He had a look
12:07at the stumps.
12:09One hit
12:09first time
12:10and Dean Jones
12:11is on his way.
12:14Well, you can only say
12:16that's a little bit
12:16of careless cricket
12:17there by Dean Jones.
12:18He turned his back
12:19on Tony Gray
12:22and bang
12:23and he's old.
12:26Alan Border
12:27is the new batsman
12:28for Australia
12:28going out to join
12:30his vice-captain
12:31Geoffrey Marsh.
12:35That's a well-struck shot.
12:42That's another wide one.
12:44There's a good piece
12:44of fielding
12:45Gordon Greenwich
12:45diving away
12:46to his left.
12:48It's Australia's 50 up.
12:49They've done it
12:50in 75 balls.
12:51The West Indies
12:53in comparison
12:53scored their first
12:5450 in 78 balls.
13:00safely way over the man
13:02at Backwood Square.
13:03So Walsh
13:04has no balls
13:05and wides
13:07and also
13:08a lack of length
13:10and direction.
13:22extras mount to 15
13:24so they're living up
13:25to their expectations
13:27here.
13:28Another one that
13:29is not well directed
13:30by Courtney Walsh.
13:35There were two men
13:36down there
13:38but that's not going
13:39to matter very much.
13:40Not necessarily
13:4120 feet tall.
13:54Big cheer now
13:55because it's showing
13:56100 on the board
13:57now for Australia
13:58but the board
13:59is one short.
14:04Great shot.
14:05Right through the gap.
14:10That's a more confident
14:11Alan Borda
14:12certainly batting
14:14much better
14:14than earlier on
14:15in the tour.
14:22This is going to be
14:24a speed of view
14:25from Phil Simmons.
14:27Well if there ever
14:28was a gift
14:30this was it.
14:35Thank you
14:36says Alan Borda
14:37that's six more
14:38to me.
14:43He's got it away
14:44for four
14:46and Alan Borda
14:47goes on to
14:48his half century
14:49and Borda's 50
14:50coming from 65
14:52balls
14:52with two sixes
14:54and six fours.
15:01So Simmons
15:02with his last over.
15:12and another half century
15:13for Jeff Marsh
15:14he too is in top form.
15:21that's a long chase
15:22and it goes into
15:24the longest corner
15:25but even so
15:27the two men
15:28converting on
15:28at Greenwich
15:29and Gray
15:30really had no chance.
15:32The outfield
15:32is very fast.
15:36He's gone
15:37he's caught behind
15:38so Walsh gets
15:40Alan Borda
15:41the first ball
15:42after the resumption
15:44it's three for 161
15:46Borda goes for 60.
15:52It brings in
15:53Mark Waugh.
16:01And Mark Waugh
16:02will be stumped
16:02by Geoffrey Dujon
16:03a good piece of work
16:05really a rash shot
16:06there from Mark Waugh.
16:07I think he was
16:08looking to
16:09put
16:09an early finish
16:11to this game.
16:14One Waugh finishes
16:15and another one starts.
16:17Steve comes out
16:18to replace Mark.
16:21Mark well stumped
16:22by Geoffrey Dujon.
16:30200 comes up
16:32for Australia
16:32with four
16:34gets down.
16:35Everybody on the
16:36edge of their seat
16:36wherever they're
16:37sitting.
16:43That's a very good
16:44hit.
16:46That's
16:46one bounce
16:48into the boundary
16:49for four.
16:51Just takes him
16:52that much closer
16:53to his century.
16:57Instead of that
16:58he's got a hand
16:58to head.
17:01He's okay.
17:02He might not be
17:03laughing but he's
17:04alright.
17:06I think he got a
17:06bat or a glove to it.
17:08Probably got a bit
17:09of a shock.
17:09Patrick Patterson
17:10has apologised.
17:11There's a smile
17:12on the face.
17:24there it is.
17:25There it is.
17:25That puts the record
17:25straight.
17:27He's in fact got two
17:28runs just to make
17:29sure of it.
17:34Another magnificent
17:35performance well
17:35appreciated by his
17:37teammates.
17:38Really has been a
17:39sensational series for
17:40Geoff Marsh.
17:42His Western
17:42Australian and
17:43Australian teammates
17:44applauding as well.
17:47His mind's been on
17:48the job all day.
17:49Turned in a very good
17:50performance in the
17:50field for Australia
17:51and another magnificent
17:53batting performance
17:53to match his century
17:55in Barbados last week.
17:57Two in a row in
17:58limited over
17:58internationals.
17:59It's a fine performance
18:00by Geoffrey Marsh.
18:02There it is.
18:03The winning run.
18:04It's a wide.
18:05And how appropriate
18:06is that?
18:07It really has been
18:09the mark of the day
18:10and the mark of the
18:12performance and
18:13probably the main
18:13reason why the West
18:14Indies has lost this
18:15fifth one day
18:16international.
18:18Four wins to
18:18Australia to wrap up
18:21the series which had
18:22already been won in
18:23Barbados but just
18:24puts the finishing
18:24touches to it.
18:26So the Australians
18:27under Alan Bordeaux
18:28with Bobby Simpson's
18:29guidance are the
18:30champions of the
18:31one day game.
18:32In the end the Aussies
18:33dominated the series.
18:35The Windies only won
18:35one game and that
18:37was with some help
18:37for the rain.
18:39For the West Indies
18:39only Richie Richardson,
18:41Gus Logie and
18:41Kirtley Ambrose
18:42enhanced their
18:43reputations.
18:44Their cricket seemed
18:45to lack discipline
18:46and in the final
18:47analysis the Australians
18:48bowled one wide
18:50and two no balls
18:51while the West Indies
18:52bowled 11 wides
18:53and 14 no balls.
18:55That's 25 extra runs
18:57and 25 extra balls
18:59quite often the
18:59difference between
19:00winning and losing.
19:02The Australians,
19:03well they played
19:04magnificently.
19:05Their fielding and
19:06running between the
19:07wickets could hardly
19:08be faulted.
19:09They paced their
19:09batting superbly.
19:11The Stars, well
19:12it's hard to know
19:13where to start in fact.
19:14Geoff Marsh
19:15obviously with two
19:16centuries and Dean
19:17Jones.
19:18Craig McDermott
19:18took 12 wickets
19:19and he was always
19:20very hard to score
19:22on.
19:22And the War Twins,
19:23they were second
19:24and third after
19:25Ian Healy in the
19:26batting strike rate.
19:27And because these
19:28three are all
19:29all-rounders,
19:30they have a
19:31tremendous effect
19:32on batting depth
19:33which is very vital
19:34in the one-day game.
19:36Perhaps the most
19:37important thing to be
19:38said about Alan
19:38Borda's team
19:39is that no one
19:41let the team down.
19:42They played like
19:43professionals
19:44throughout the series
19:45putting into
19:46practice Bobby
19:46Simpson's efforts
19:47over the years.
19:50So
20:45after the
