00:00:16the inside, Russell's gonna take it, George Russell retakes the lead of the Australian Grand Prix, it's another Ferrari he's
00:00:23had to overtake, not Charles Leclerc this time, he's pitted and he's down in fourth, George Russell frees his
00:00:29past Lewis Hamilton, who's been running those tyres now for 27 laps, and let's see what he can do now,
00:00:35out in front, and not under pressure, from a car right up his gearbox.
00:00:41Yeah, and that's not necessarily about battery, that is, as Lewis Hamilton does peel into the pit lane, that is
00:00:47just getting much better drive, using 1,000 horsepower off the corner, getting much better drive out of the corner
00:00:53with traction, with the tyres.
00:00:55Talking of tyres, Max Verstappen has just been on the radio saying his tyres are terrible, 9 laps has had
00:01:01those mediums on, 4, hard tyre for Lewis Hamilton, listen how he has to keep the revs so high when
00:01:07he's in that pit box, and he comes out behind his teammate Charles Leclerc, but Charles Leclerc has been running
00:01:13his hard tyres for 3 laps, so Lewis has what is called a 3-lap offset strategy.
00:01:20OK, I think the 1-lap offset is viable. Copy that.
00:01:23If there's anyone who can do it, it's George Russell, Marcel.
00:01:26Yep, the tyre whisperer when he needs to, isn't he?
00:01:30And, of course, they don't have to, remember he got disqualified in Spa, he got disqualified in Spa, because he
00:01:37won the race, but it basically used the tyres for twice as long as anybody thought they could, but that
00:01:42doesn't matter anymore, because the car is weighed, and then the weight of four tyres is added to it, so
00:01:50it doesn't, there's not a concern if you run, if you wear your tyres thin now.
00:01:567.24 kilos plus the mass of the tyres, you're right, Arvid Limblad with the lock-up there, Oli Behrman
00:02:02will see that and think, ooh, goodie, might just be on for a little overtake coming up.
00:02:08Alex Albon is behind his teammate Carlos Sainz, Williams 12th and 13th currently, and I reckon it's about 44 laps
00:02:15that George Russell's got to put in, maybe 42 laps that he's got to put in, to go to the
00:02:22end of this race on the tyres that he's currently running.
00:02:26So, that is a whisper and a half, that is, you'll see what his pace is like, now the Ferraris
00:02:33are in the 22s and George is in the 1 minute 23s, and he's got, he has just got to
00:02:39call it a pinto, but traffic, actually the 18 runners are nicely spread out around the track to an extent
00:02:46at the moment, so picking off the back markers, not too much of a problem.
00:02:51Okay, Virginia Water, the birthplace of Arvid Limblad, Chelmsford, the birthplace of Oli Behrman, it's Surrey against Essex, out on
00:03:02the track currently, rookie against, well, driver going into his 28th Grand Prix.
00:03:10Arvid Limblad, I think, has done really, really well so far this weekend, he led his teammate Liam Lawson for
00:03:15every session, practice and qualifying, right up until the last lap in Q3, but he's now racing, he's did more
00:03:22laps than anyone else in Bahrain in the second test, he can cope with the demands of these cars, but
00:03:26under racing conditions it's different.
00:03:28Super impressive, super impressive, and he's coped with the, with Verstappen in his mirrors, he's coped with the start, first
00:03:36lap, and he's just done an outstanding job, but Bernie has more news for us.
00:03:42Yeah, we're just going to come in quickly on the Ferrari V Mercedes race, where it stands at the minute,
00:03:47at the moment, Russell would have a safety car window over the two Ferraris, but that's not going to last
00:03:53for long,
00:03:53because the two Ferraris are currently around 5 tenths of a second quicker a lap with that much fresher hard
00:04:00tyre, and that's what they're banking on, they can close that safety car window, and force the Mercedes into another
00:04:07pit start, or to emerge behind under a safety car, so we're hoping that tyre offset will bring them good.
00:04:12Just explain for our audience, what a safety car window is.
00:04:16Exactly, sorry Martin, so safety car window is the gap, where would you come out on track, if there was
00:04:21a safety car.
00:04:22We reckon that gap is around 10 seconds, you can see there, on the left hand side between the leader
00:04:27and Charlotte Clare is 14.4 seconds, so at the moment, Russell would stop and come out ahead of Charlotte
00:04:33Clare.
00:04:34However, if that drops below 10, at that point under a safety car, Russell would emerge behind Charlotte Clare, and
00:04:42they are pushing now, half a second a lap, get that safety car window closed.
00:04:48Meanwhile, from the informative to the ridiculous, have you noticed that Oli Behrman has changed the bear on his helmet
00:04:54just for Australia, and we've got a little koala sat there in his eucalyptus tree, just for Australia.
00:05:00Well done to the bear on his tail now, and it's getting a bit windy for George Russell, gusts up
00:05:19to 25 kph, quite near Port Phillip Bay, and the wind comes off the sea here, Martin.
00:05:26That could be something to take into consideration.
00:05:29Landers' front left looks horrible, absolutely horrible now, so he is well over a pit stop behind George Russell, so
00:05:39I think we're somewhat confirming, McLaren's struggling for pace,
00:05:42and we're going to see every weekend we go through one racing, we're going to see updates, developments, aren't we,
00:05:49it's going to be rapid, the first half of the season in particular.
00:05:52There's a lot to learn for the teams going into this race, so much to learn, going into next week,
00:05:58even more to learn on a different track too, and it's a sprint weekend.

00:11:05There's your race leader and tyre whisperer, George Russell, trying to go to the end on a set of tyres.
00:11:11There's a set of hard compound tyres to see if he can win this race and put in 46 laps

00:11:19That's a gamble.

00:11:23Because unless they can get the luxury of another safety car pit stop, they've got to go a long way.
00:11:32And the pendulum's swinging back a little bit towards Ferrari here.
00:11:36A 1.23.0 from Russell on the previous lap.

00:11:42A 1.23.3 for Hamilton.
00:11:44But any gains that Russell makes now are going to be offset by Ferrari having much fresher tyres towards the
00:11:51ends of this race.
00:11:53Verstappen, you feel, is going to have to pit again as well.
00:11:56He's on 17 lap old medium tyres.
00:11:58They're committed to a two-stopper.
00:12:00But that front left to George Russell, that looks to be graining quite significantly.
00:12:05Unless he can burn through that.
00:12:08But, yeah, that's a tall order for him to do that.
00:12:12And he's in the 22s now, though, again.
00:12:15But if you can't make it, you've got to pit early enough.
00:12:20You can't start losing time.
00:12:22And then leave yourself not enough laps on the fresh tyres to compensate for a pit stop.
00:12:29So, if George stopped now, he'd come out side by side with Lewis Hamilton.
00:12:33But behind Antonelli, who we assume has stopped again as well.
00:12:38But actually, both Mercs are now into the 22s.
00:12:42Leclerc just had a scrappy lap.
00:12:44A 1.24.3.
00:12:45And looking at the driver track, that does not appear to have passed anybody or had to get through traffic.
00:12:50I think he was trying to lap Franco Colapinto.
00:12:53And that's what cost him a little bit of time.
00:12:55Fernando Alonso's out of the race to conserve components.
00:12:59Aston Martin have retired the Spanish driver from the Australian Grand Prix.

00:13:30But the McLaren moving around under acceleration.
00:13:33But I guess what Lando's got to be sure he doesn't do on the brand-new tyres

00:13:43Yeah, I was just going to say, now is a big moment of decision for Russell out in front
00:13:47leading at this race.
00:13:48The one or two stop, they need to make a call on it quickly.
00:13:52The reason being, Lewis Hamilton in P4 is 22.3 seconds behind.
00:13:58And the pit window is...
00:14:0123 seconds.
00:14:0220-ish, I was going to go with.
00:14:05I was allowing for slow pit stopping.
00:14:06Well, yeah.
00:14:07So I think that Lewis has just been released from a lot of cars with blue flags.
00:14:11So if Russell wants to cover Lewis, not under a safety car,
00:14:15he probably needs to be in the next lap or two.
00:14:18How confident are they in either a one stop working from here or another safety car?
00:14:24Or a bigger tyre offset and leave it a few laps and get an overtake done?

00:14:29I think they're going to try and get to the end.
00:14:32And while they're still lapping, both of them faster than both Ferraris,
00:14:36just at the moment, they're fine.
00:14:38But if they start losing lap time,
00:14:40as Lewis sails past Beermann down the back straight with some battery deployment,
00:14:48yeah, it'll spin on its head.
00:14:49That's why I'm saying I think the heading pendulum has swung back towards,
00:14:54towards Ferrari's favour.
00:14:56Lawson's just got past Colapinto.
00:14:59Don't forget, Russell got past Hamilton with that big tyre offset.
00:15:03We might see it swing around.
00:15:04This is Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly.
00:15:07As you said, round here, these two leave nothing in the locker.
00:15:13And getting a nice slipstream.
00:15:15And then, when the Alpine just starts to start recharging the battery,
00:15:20then Ocon decides that's the moment to not think about recharging
00:15:23and to think about overtaking because you can deploy that little bit extra.
00:15:28That's the sort of tactics you're going to have to employ in 2026.

00:15:37Yeah, Ferrari, what Ferrari decided to do is go and put Mercedes under pressure,
00:15:43force them into doing something they may not want to do,
00:15:47pushing these tyres harder or pitting.
00:15:50There goes Lando Norris pulling out from behind Arvid Lindblad,
00:15:54and he's back ahead of the racing bulls.
00:15:57He's behind Max Verstappen.
00:15:59He's lapping significantly quicker than Max Verstappen.
00:16:01He's racing Max Verstappen in this race currently.
00:16:07And that is Gabriel Bortoleto getting past Esteban Ocon and up into 10th place.
00:16:13So, we've got all these, all the new rules of regs
00:16:15and the way that we go racing is very different.
00:16:17We've got a tyre offset, a pit set strategy offset as well.
00:16:21Combining, Martin, to give us one of the more interesting
00:16:25Australian Grand Prix's without the aid of rain we've heard for a while.
00:16:28Yeah, I would agree with that. I would agree with that.
00:16:31Because the drivers are having to get the move done themselves.
00:16:34The battery's putting them there.
00:16:36And then they're having to sort it out when they get there.
00:16:39They're going to be quite feisty with their defence as well.

00:16:47So, yeah, they've been told,
00:16:50OK, we've got to now go and force Mercedes to either pit
00:16:55or push the tyres harder than they want to.

00:16:59the drivers are doing this all by themselves,
00:17:01not with the aid of strategists.

00:17:56They'll have a go at overtaking anywhere, anyhow,
00:18:00and they don't mind.

00:18:35we saw coming out of a couple of turns as well.

00:18:41and see if he can come back at Oli Behrman.

00:20:46And if Mercedes start to hit the cliff,
00:20:48and start losing grip on those tyres,
00:20:50Ferrari will be all over them.
