NHL Trade Deadline Day! It's Quiet... so far. Move(s) coming??
Will GM Don Sweeney and the Bruins make a big move? Thomas from Blues available? What about Trochek? Is the price too high for a team that might not make a deep playoff run?
Transcript
00:00Talking about how he hopes that they do and that players have spoken out saying that they hope that they
00:05do.
00:06But so far, there has been no movement coming off a 6-3 loss to Nashville.
00:11I'm sure that these players want more help.
00:13But is the price tag too big for the Bruins right now when it comes to other players that are
00:19out there and available?
00:20No, I don't think it is.
00:21I just don't.
00:22I think the Bruins are there in a position where they know that there's a chance they might not even
00:28make the playoffs.
00:29So what are they, the 8-seed right now?
00:32They are in the wild.
00:33They have the second wild card, and they are just a single point ahead of the Blue Jackets.
00:37All right, so basically they're the 8-seed.
00:40Why would you make major moves if you felt like those moves might not even help you accomplish your goal?
00:51Especially when they're not good on the road.
00:53They're really, really good at home.
00:55They're not good on the road.
00:56And by being a 7- or 8-seed, you're only going to be playing the majority of your playoff
01:01games on the road.
01:02Like, yeah, in hockey, luckily, you get to play some home games, but the majority of them are going to
01:06be on the road.
01:06And they've played three more home games than road games at this stage of the season.
01:09And if you're going to rent a guy, don't you – generally, don't teams rent guys when they feel like,
01:16okay, that player could make them make a major push in the postseason?
01:20So if you're a team that's like, all right, we might back into the playoffs as the 8-seed or
01:26maybe the 7-seed, why would we add guys that might only be rentals when there's a chance where we
01:36might not even get in?
01:37If they were the 2-seed or the 3-seed or even the 4-seed, then I say go all
01:41in.
01:41What's hilarious is I was looking this morning and heavy.com was like the best trade for the Bruins should
01:48be reuniting with Jake DeBrusque and sending two, like, second-round picks to the Canucks for him.
01:56I mean, the Panthers are going to miss the playoffs.
01:58Maybe trade for Marchand.
02:00I mean, I would love to bring Marchand back here.
02:03I don't know that Pasta would be happy about that.
02:05They should not be big buyers at the deadline.
02:07They are not a great team.
02:09But when you've got players out there talking to media saying that they want additions, like—
02:14I think that—what else would you say?
02:16I feel like they're like, yeah, we should improve the club.
02:18The players know that they're a bubble playoff team and they want to make the playoffs.
02:23Don Sweeney, to me, if you give up a legit piece or a top draft pick to get a guy
02:29that's going to help you potentially for one playoff series, that's not exactly smart business.
02:33And players don't look at—they're not looking at the future, right?
02:38Or they're not looking at, like, the pieces that they potentially got to deal.
02:42Like, the players are just looking at it as, oh, get us some guys in that can help us.
02:46Help us maybe get—help us get to the playoffs.
02:48Where the front office is looking at it like, well, what do we got to give up to this player?
02:54Is this player going to help us, you know, this year and, you know, moving forward?
02:58So the front office looks at it completely different.
03:02So that's why when you hear players more vocal, the front office is looking at it from a different view
03:08that the players are not even taking into account.
03:10So in your mind, the front office is looking at it as they can't make a push in the postseason?
03:14Well, I mean—
03:15Because that's not a great look either.
03:16No, I think they can.
03:17But I also think that they're going to take into consideration long-term control.
03:22So if they can find a player who's a good price, that they like, that they're going to have a
03:26couple years on the contract, that they're going to have in the system, then, yeah, like, they're going to—they'll be
03:30interested in making the move.
03:31But, I mean, say what you want about Don Sweeney when it comes to drafting.
03:34When it comes to trade deadlines, this guy wheels and deals constantly and seems to know what he's doing generally.
03:39And so, like, I just—I don't think they're going to overpay for somebody that's only going to be here for
03:44a year.
03:45Right, right.
03:45I think that's—I think that—Sean makes a great point.
03:48Like, that's the way that front office is looking at it.
03:52So then Wiggy and Shyam are aligned.
03:54You don't think that they're going to do anything before 3 p.m. today?
03:56Nothing crazy.
03:57Yeah, nothing crazy.
03:58Nothing crazy, but you think that they could do something?
04:00I think they could be technically more sellers, kind of like that Red Sox one where they were on the—kind
04:04of on the fence a little bit, selling a little bit, buying a little bit.
04:07I think that's what you could expect from the Bruins.
04:09Maybe they deal off a guy like Arvidsson or Peek, who doesn't have a lot of term left on the
04:13contract, and they bring in a guy that kind of just fills the same roles.
04:17Like a depth player.
04:17Yep, exactly.
04:18You're not going to be like—you're not—well, they're going to bring in a guy, and you're not going to go,
04:22wow, that was an unbelievable move by them.
04:24Look, they brought in player X and player X's spectacular.
04:29It's going to be like, okay, they're just adding pieces because of depth and—
04:35And you think Bruins fans are fine with that?
04:37Because I do think it's interesting when you bring up that season where the Red Sox didn't really do anything
04:41and they were in the same position.
04:42People always tend to go with the Red Sox when they don't make any moves to improve the team, if
04:48they've got even a shot at the postseason.
04:49The difference is, though, is the Red Sox had finished at the bottom of their division, what, like the last
04:54two years prior or whatever it was.
04:55So, I mean, this Bruins team has generally always at least been competitive.
04:59They were really, really good in the regular season a couple years, and they're trying to kind of retool and
05:04figure things out again and usher in that new younger core.
05:07And so, I just think this is kind of one of the growing pains years for the Bruins.
05:11And I think a lot of—I don't want to speak for every Bruins fan, but I think a lot of
05:16Bruins fans look at this team and don't really have high expectations for them.
05:21Well, yeah, 774 text or, dude, the Bruins are getting swept by Tampa or Carolina.
05:25They should be sellers, LOL.
05:27Yeah, I think a lot of people are like—
05:29Who started the LOL after every message?
05:31It is so dumb.
05:33Aren't you not supposed to laugh at your joke?
05:35I do it.
05:36L-M-A-O.
