00:58The history of the Ferturo was a little bit short-lived,
01:01but it started with Mati Sierinen, who is a Finnish architect,
01:04being asked to design a mountain cabin.
01:07He then found that this was very popular,
01:09although not popular where the mountain cabin was in Finland.
01:13The people up there thought it was an embarrassment on the environment,
01:16this plastic spaceship.
01:18Although around the world, people really became interested in the Ferturo,
01:21and it took off in the United States.
01:24Currently, right now, it's estimated that about close to maybe 50 of these are in existence.
01:29There could be some more that haven't simply been found, but I doubt it.
01:34We think the livability of the Ferturo is just incredible.
01:39We open the front door, and there's not a speck of dust in here.
01:43That's because the windows are not operable.
01:46The door seals up pretty well, but it's wonderful.
01:49Being at 520 square feet, probably one of the forefronters of the whole tiny home movement,
01:54was advertised for a family of four.
01:56But they're always designed to be sort of a mountain cabin, ski cabin,
02:00not so much as a permanent residence.
02:03Good evening.
02:04The Middle East War produced developments all over the world today.
02:08The oil-producing countries of the Arab world decided to use their oil as a political weapon.
02:14When the oil embargo hit, it had a major impact on the cost of crude oil
02:19in which plastics are made from.
02:21This became known as the Mercedes-Benz of prefabricated housing,
02:25and it pretty much then just curtailed the manufacturing of any more of the Ferturals.
02:30They just ceased to exist.
02:33Okay, Neil, we can see you coming down the ladder now.
02:36Being that we're celebrating this 50th anniversary of both of these events,
02:40the Ferturals being 50 years old and Armstrong stepping on the moon,
02:45you have to be a custodian of these resources.
02:48It just gives you a wonderful sense of place when you're here
02:51that you're really in a special place that will never be created again.
02:55This is Houston rating 11 ovality clear, over.
