00:00Ray Costa, bonjour.
00:01Bonjour.
00:02Je disais qu'en fait Ray Costa avait obtenu 8 nominations aux Oscars.
00:07I was saying that you got 8 nominations, but I forgot one word.
00:12Indirectly, 8 nominations.
00:14Indirectly.
00:15Now, what's your profession?
00:18I have an entertainment public relations firm, so I'm a publicist, but I'm also an awards consultant.
00:24That's it.
00:25What is an awards consultant?
00:26An awards consultant is similar to a political consultant.
00:30The same way as you're campaigning for someone to be president or governor, you're trying to get votes.
00:35Instead of getting votes from the citizens, you get votes from the members.
00:40Golden Globes or Oscars or Tonys or Grammys.
00:45You know, in the best song category, there are five nominees, correct?
00:49Yes.
00:49They're all yours.
00:50Yes.
00:51Well, in fairness, we're hired through studios and some of it, I'm personally hired by the songwriters.
00:58I've seen a grizzly big as a house, walk across an open plain.
01:04My main concentration is the music branch.
01:07People hire me, studios hire me, because I have a relationship with the music branch.
01:11But also, it's crazy, for over 30 years, I've been working with composers.
01:15Something I've been wanting to tell you for a long time.
01:18And I've also started over a half a dozen festivals internationally that are still operating today, film music festivals.
01:25So all that together, I have a really good relationship with the voters.
01:29And a lot of them have been clients or I've invited them to different events and things.
01:34So in going to all these festivals too early on, I see what are the great movies that I think
01:39have a shot of being nominated and also what scores.
01:43And a lot of those, then I talk to the studios directly or I'll talk to the composers because I
01:48see the ones that have promise.
01:50Best score category.
01:52Five nominees.
01:52Yes.
01:53How many you have?
01:53Three.
01:54I have Sinners, who are by Ludwig Orensen.
02:03One battle after another, Johnny Greenwood.
02:06And also, personal favorites, is Alexandre Desplat of Frankenstein.
02:15There's a beautiful solo violon by a Norwegian journalist, Elbjörg Amsing, who brings to the creature a voice of a
02:23great beauty, a great purity.
02:28It's very beautiful.
02:32So I was going to say, look, you could have brought me in.
02:34I could have brought you the smallest, the smallest, smallest violin.
02:39Ludwig Orensen.
02:40I mean, this is not the first time you work with Ludwig Orensen.
02:42No, I had the pleasure of working with Ludwig.
02:45Early on, I think it was Creed was the first thing.
02:47And then I worked with him on Black Panther through the studio.
02:53When you talk about Ludwig Orensen, of course, you have to talk about Ryan Coogler.
02:56I mean, you know, it goes back to college.
02:57And you know what?
02:59We got Ludwig Orensen talking, you know, about Sinners, his relationship with Ryan Coogler.
03:06Whatever we worked on at the moment was just so exciting.
03:10And it kind of feels like that when we were still today, you know, it was like we were still
03:14those kind of college kids sitting there in my little dorm, you know, 25 years old, listening to music for
03:20his project for the first time.
03:21And I remember Ryan freaking out.
03:23This sounds amazing.
03:24And it was funny because I went back to some of our old projects.
03:28And like from the first student film that I did with them, like there's a lot of guitar in it.
03:32And there's a lot of guitars through all of our films.
03:35And obviously Sinners is kind of going full circle on the guitar.
03:40But it still feels like we're kind of the same kind of kids making movies.
03:55So now what?
03:57I mean, you know, nominations are out.
03:59So what do you do now?
04:00Again, it's a campaign.
04:02So it's still getting in front of voters.
04:04And before there was everything from screenings, Q&As, receptions.
04:09I'm also trying to be impartial.
04:11Even people contact me, members.
04:13And so people would tell me, well, you're not making it any easier.
04:16I said, yes, but I've given you the reason why everyone deserves it.
04:19So now it's and, you know, that's kind of what I do also.
04:23Can I read it?
04:24Yes, of course.
04:24Amore of fucking sunshine.
04:28This is 100% Diane Warren.
04:30Yeah, she's the one giving you this.
04:32And you can see it over there as well.
04:34I mean, you know, she loves you.
04:35I'm going to put it back.
04:36All right.
04:40I've had the pleasure of working with Diane now for 10 years or 11 years.
04:44And also I'm proud to say that I helped campaign with the governor and the music branch
04:48to make sure that she got the honorary Oscar because she deserved it.
04:52And it was, I understand, it was unanimous because, you know,
04:55how many times she's been nominated.
04:57Now she's like broken records, 17 nominations.
05:02You'll see, you'll see, you'll see.
05:07Oh, that's what I'm saying to you.
