00:00You would go to Pancourt Palace.
00:04This week is like action week.
00:06We're making a cake for the Sabled Hockey Festival.
00:10No!
00:12And Drew Carey order the Lego Man version of Indiana Jones.
00:15When Drew Carey asks, he's just got to sort of do it.
00:19Jeff and I get to fly from Baltimore to L.A.,
00:23bring it to Drew's house the same day with like two hours of sleep.
00:28That's just stupid.
00:30Yeah.
00:31Thanks, Drew.
00:33Appreciate it.
00:35After pastry school, I decided to make cakes my way.
00:39So I set up shop and hired the most talented people I know,
00:43my friends.
01:00We do it all.
01:00Make it bigger, make it badder, make it awesome.
01:06For me, it's all about the cake.
01:11I think this cake's a little odd.
01:14This is just a little scene of two lovebirds.
01:20Lauren was in charge of the anniversary cuddly cake.
01:23This couple has been married for 25 years and celebrate that they wanted themselves in bed.
01:33It's very specifically placed, though.
01:38It's very specifically placed, though.
02:01And then there's emotion.
02:06I mean, it kind of sums it up, I think.
02:13This week is like action week.
02:16We got disabled hockey.
02:18We got Kit from Knight Rider.
02:20Remember, you know.
02:22And we got Indiana Jones in Lego form from the video game.
02:31All right, so we're making a cake for the sixth annual Disabled Hockey Festival.
02:35The USA Disabled Hockey Festival is a tournament for folks that play hockey that have different
02:42abilities than other people.
02:44The festival was basically designed for all of the teams and all of the leagues all over
02:48the country to sort of come together, meet people, and play against each other.
02:53Basically, the three-tier cake is going to have all the logos all over it.
02:56So we're going to have little figures of all the different people playing hockey, and
03:00then the big, giant logo on top.
03:02Somebody told me that there might be time for me to actually get in a sled and play some
03:05hockey.
03:06I'm really stoked.
03:07I love hockey, obviously.
03:10You know, I wear a jersey now and then.
03:13I love hockey.
03:16I'm pretty good at getting beat up on the ice.
03:18The Hansen brothers were the goons from the movie Slapshot.
03:21And anybody who likes to be a tough guy at hockey, they are the role model.
03:27Oh, jeez.
03:27Sorry.
03:28Come on, man.
03:29Watch out behind you.
03:31Oh!
03:32That's it.
03:33Yeah?
03:33That's it.
03:35They kind of threw me on the ground and pretty much beat the hell out of me.
03:42But I still love hockey.
03:44I think it's like every hockey player's fantasy to get beat up by the Hansen brothers.
03:50That's a beating that you wear proudly.
03:58I got a call from a gentleman named Robert.
04:01His son Jimmy's getting married.
04:02Robert told me that his son Jimmy was, as a child, obsessed with Knight Rider.
04:06What else would he possibly need for a groom's cake but a replica of Kit, the car from Knight
04:11Rider.
04:13I don't think we're going to make this jump, Michael.
04:16Hold on, Kit.
04:18Our little Tommy's all grown up as a cake decorator.
04:21And he's going to be doing this cake pretty much on his own.
04:24Carving's not always my forte with cars.
04:26Because I always carve it and it looks sort of how it looks.
04:29The two things that make Kit Kit are the lights on the front of his bumper and also the
04:34fact that he's a talking car.
04:35The light right now is in the mail somewhere.
04:39I have no idea whether the lights are going to work or not.
04:43He's got a light on the front that goes like this.
04:46And I want that.
04:47Need to call for some backup, Tommy.
04:49I'm just, I'm just, I'm just trying to, uh...
04:59Somebody ordered a cake for their stepson's birthday and that somebody wanted a Indiana
05:05Jones but like the Lego man version of Indiana Jones.
05:09That somebody happened to be Drew Carey but that's neither here nor there.
05:11We have to fly it to Los Angeles on a commercial airline.
05:16It's going to be a difficult cake mainly because of the, uh, the transportation.
05:22You do have to take into consideration just stability.
05:25What can be cake and what's not.
05:27Body, which will be all separate.
05:29We'll just get placed on top.
05:30That way we can have it all separate for the trip.
05:33I'm trying to make this, you know, look as tiny as possible.
05:36This is Lego Indiana Jones's head I'm carving right now.
05:41My model for Lego Indiana Jones is Lego Duff Goldman.
05:47This isn't me, this isn't stacked straight, is it?
05:50It's like the Lean and Tower of Pisa.
05:53Yeah, I mean that's what cake does.
05:55Then your job is to make it...
05:56Your job is to be the boss of the cake.
05:58You gotta...
05:59Whip it into shape!
06:01Whip it into shape!
06:02Oh, that's a good one!
06:04What were you doing?
06:06Yeah!
06:09Right now I'm looking for a piece of plastic.
06:11I can cut up and shape it with a torch into the shape of the hat brim for Indiana Jones.
06:26Whoa.
06:29I don't know whose bucket this is though.
06:32I mean it might be somebody's bucket, I don't know.
06:37Poor guy, I can't do that to him.
06:39Kill me.
06:41What happened to my bucket, I'm like, oh I'm sorry, I cut it up.
06:44And then whatever I was trying to do with it, it didn't work anyway, so I just ruined it.
06:57Well this is our kit light, and this is what I was afraid of.
07:01It's way bigger than what we thought it was going to be.
07:05Tommy put a lot of time into the kick cake, so he was a bit anxious cutting into the cake,
07:12not even knowing if that light was going to work in there.
07:15I want to try, but it would mean, I think, cutting into the hood.
07:23We're going to try to make it work.
07:24Here we go.
07:26I wouldn't do that, Tommy.
07:29Don't say that, man.
07:32Jeff and I were like, finish, finish, finish, as the kids are coming up to where the cake was.
07:44I love tools and I love building things.
07:48I love the noise, I love the workshop, and I love how-to shows, like fix-it shows.
07:53Hi, I'm Norm Abram, and welcome back to This Old House.
07:56I've been watching Norm Abram on TV since before I can remember.
08:05How's it going? I'm Duff.
08:07Welcome to This Old Bakery.
08:08Today we're going to try to figure out how to put some more space in this workshop here.
08:12Let's utilize the free space above this door and build a shelf.
08:16What we do here, I mean, it's a craft.
08:19I just happened to pick up some of these on my way to work.
08:21So what do you think?
08:23Do you have any for this?
08:23I don't think these are going to hold our shelf up.
08:25They're a little small.
08:26And we take a lot of pride in the craft that we do.
08:30Hey, guys.
08:32Hey, nice shirts.
08:34Nice shirts.
08:35What are you doing to my shelf?
08:39We're in here, me and Jeff and Ben were figuring something out,
08:43and Norm Abram just walked into the room.
08:49Is this New Yankee Workshop Baltimore style?
08:52Yeah.
08:55Are you going to make fun of my shoddy craftsmanship?
08:57No, no, no.
08:58I'm here to help.
08:59I brought you a gift.
09:00This is a pocket screw jig.
09:02It's a simple way to put things together using screws.
09:05Norm actually brought us a tool, and like him being in the baker was like a really good gift.
09:09But like him bringing a tool for us to use was like, you know, him going above and beyond.
09:15It was pretty amazing.
09:16You know what they say?
09:17The rule about learning how to do woodworking?
09:20Show one, do one, teach one.
09:25There's a lot of talent here.
09:26A lot of very creative talent here.
09:28And they wore plaid shirts today, which I found to be very flattering.
09:33You know what was amazing was we were trying to figure out like, wow, like Norm Abrams here.
09:37Like, I was like, Norm, what do you want to do?
09:40So are we going to cover a cake?
09:41Want to cover a cake?
09:42Yeah, sure.
09:42Apparently, Norm Abrams is going to help cover this cake.
09:46Going a little higher in the center.
09:48I'm not sure if Norm Abrams is qualified to cover my cake.
09:52I think he's qualified to do anything.
09:54Look at that.
09:55Wow.
09:56Nice job.
10:02I had to make the brim of the hat for Indiana Jones.
10:06So I needed something I could shake.
10:08Chef Star, I have a favor to ask you.
10:12So is that really your bucket?
10:14It's my bucket.
10:15I almost cut it up last night.
10:17But I felt, I was like, man, if I cut it up, like, I was like, where's my bucket?
10:22My bucket.
10:23Can I steal the lid of your bucket?
10:28He definitely seemed like, you know, he didn't want to give it to me.
10:30How many buckets of those do you get?
10:32That's a special bucket.
10:33Why is it?
10:34Because we go back.
10:35But it's going to a good cause, I guess, right?
10:37Yeah.
10:38You're going to make a hat brim for a Lego cake.
10:42Deal.
10:43It was my personal bucket.
10:46Used it to store special things.
10:49It's just not going to be the same anymore.
10:54His hat brim is all bent up, you know?
10:57It should be pretty awesome.
10:58I'm really excited about this cake.
11:00Check this out.
11:01Look at this.
11:02There's a little thing in here.
11:03It's a rubber hose.
11:05You will go to Pencott Palace.
11:09That belongs in a museum.
11:17I am working on the sixth annual disabled hockey logo.
11:23The hockey cake was fairly simple.
11:25It just had a lot of different small elements.
11:27We really wanted to be able to represent all of the different teams.
11:30So in order to make them still legible, we decided to print them out on rice paper.
11:37They had a lot of logos that needed to be on the cake.
11:40And I kind of just hoped they'd all fit on there.
11:43I don't know anything about these teams or anything.
11:46So I might put rivals right next to each other.
11:52We're doing Lego Indiana Jones for Drew Carey's son.
11:55Drew Carey wanted a cake for Connor's fifth birthday.
11:58Connor loves the crystal skull.
12:00I'm going to be doing the actual crystal skull.
12:02I'm going to try to make it out of sugar.
12:05Got this sugar right and it kind of looks like satin.
12:07I'm going to melt this down.
12:09All the air is going to boil off and it's going to get clearer.
12:11I haven't actually built any kind of sugar sculpture for 13 years maybe.
12:17Sugar is very dangerous.
12:18When you get that temperature sugar on your skin, you can't get it off.
12:22Hot, hot, hot.
12:24See that sugar right there is angry.
12:25And that is liquid.
12:27What you want to do is just move it on the table a few times.
12:29It's going to suck some of the heat out of the sugar.
12:32Okay, speaking really hot.
12:33That's hot.
12:34Like I'm going to have, once it gets to the right temp,
12:36like probably seven seconds to actually sculpt it.
12:40Okay, so right now I'm just trying to get that crystal skull shape there.
12:43Just kind of work this around a little bit.
12:47All right, so what I'm going to do is I'm going to put a light in the skull
12:50so it glows just like the one in the movie.
12:54Looks like a crystal skull to me.
12:56You are not too shabby.
13:05The thing that makes Kit Kit was this little panel on the front bumper that has these lights that go
13:11back and forth.
13:12I was a little disoriented and wanted to put it upside down and Jeff said, like, just flip it.
13:17Bam.
13:18Ha, ha, ha.
13:23Congratulations, James.
13:24For Kit, there's a car who talks.
13:26It's kind of a no brainer to put a speaker in there.
13:30Congratulations, James.
13:32Done and done.
13:34I'm really psyched about how these kicks are done.
13:38I would definitely have one of the Kit replicas sitting right next to my DeLorean from Back to the Future.
13:44And my 18 van.
13:47Ha, ha, ha, ha.
13:54A little surprise.
13:56A little surprise.
13:57Right over there.
13:59Congratulations, James.
14:01Your very own Knight Rider car.
14:04Jimmy was stoked, and he was just like...
14:07Mom and her.
14:08They can't keep anything from me, but they kept this from me, and I really love it.
14:12It's amazing.
14:14Congratulations, James.
14:16What's up, guys?
14:19I'm pretty sure, like, I was not looking awesome.
14:23No!
14:24This is not fair!
14:39I'm happy with how y'all came together today.
14:43There's a lot of decorators working on him.
14:47I'm happy with how y'all came together today.
14:54There's a lot of decorators working on him.
14:58Lego Indiana Jones is definitely sexy because he's got his whip, so...
15:03He looks good now, but we've got to get him out to California in three pieces.
15:09It's at the bakery till...
15:11I think this is about midnight, Friday night.
15:14Gathering all the tools we would need, packing them, and packing cakes for travel.
15:20If we can pull this off without actually beating up the cake, that will be something.
15:24Definitely.
15:30I'm working on the uniforms for the hockey players.
15:34Hey, Duff.
15:35Is it okay that I made the hockey players look happy?
15:38Of course they're happy.
15:38They're playing hockey.
15:39Everybody's smiling when they play hockey.
15:48I think the cake turned out really well.
15:50I think they'll be happy with it.
15:52Everyone's represented.
15:53Well, Duff's going to deliver the cake.
15:55I hope he doesn't come back with too many bruises.
15:57If I'm playing hockey against these dudes, they're going to skate circles around me.
16:01Because I'm going to be like, how does this thing work?
16:03And they'll be like...
16:03I know.
16:04And I'll be like...
16:11All right, cake's done.
16:12Now I'm going to go play sled hockey.
16:20What's up, guys?
16:21What's going on, man?
16:22I just saw you guys warming up a little bit.
16:25I'm a little nervous.
16:28Perfect.
16:29Just back right in there.
16:30Sit right in.
16:30Okay.
16:31Now, all you do is fire out as you can, and then just...
16:35There you go.
16:37Oh!
16:38It's trippy.
16:39I'm sure I look like an idiot on this thing.
16:41I'm pretty sure, like, I was not looking awesome.
16:47No!
16:48This is not fair.
16:50I don't know how to fight and sled hockey.
16:53We're going to start the game.
16:54He's going to stay out for a minute.
16:56Then I actually got out there, and I was playing hockey with Olympians.
17:17I think I did a pretty good job for never having sat on a hockey sled before and playing hockey
17:23with these guys.
17:24Oh, no!
17:26I fought the other team's goalie, and I lost, and I got kicked out of the game.
17:31Dude, that was amazing!
17:34I totally wanted to play sled hockey.
17:36Ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it for Charm City Cakes, a Feltz-A-Wall mineral land!
17:44Oh, man!
17:45Thank you so much!
17:46That's awesome!
17:47I would take an ass whooping to raise awareness for any kind of disabled hockey any day of the week.
17:52Pretty incredible that I was just on the ice with a gold medal hockey team.
17:57That's amazing.
17:59So cool.
18:00Oh, wow.
18:01Sweet!
18:08How's it going?
18:09How's it going?
18:10Nice to meet you.
18:10I think it's amazing.
18:12Yeah.
18:13Who else wants to piece of it?
18:22Jeff and I get to fly Lego Indiana Jones from Baltimore to L.A., bring it to Drew's house.
18:29Here's around noon, finish the cake, get it down to the actual table, and finalize, finish the cake.
18:36The same day with, like, two hours of sleep.
18:42That's just stupid.
18:44All right, here we go.
18:45Where is he?
18:46Back here.
18:46Oh, my gosh, you came!
18:48How you doing?
18:48Nice to meet you.
18:49Nice to meet you.
18:51Here's Jeff.
18:52Oh, my gosh.
18:54Oh, high five.
18:55Rock on for that.
18:56That is so cool.
18:57So is it hard getting it here?
18:59Yes.
19:00It actually was.
19:01It actually was.
19:04Jeff and I were putting on the finishing touches as the kids are coming up from the pool to where
19:09the cake was.
19:10Like, finish, finish, finish, and, like, just toss the paper.
19:12Like, okay, here's your cake.
19:15Yay!
19:22Let's get a picture with the cake.
19:23How's it going?
19:24How are you?
19:24Nice to meet you.
19:25That cake is amazing.
19:26Isn't that cool?
19:27Everybody was totally intimate.
19:28The skull worked.
19:29And of course.
19:30That's sugar and it's got a little light inside.
19:32It actually worked better in the dark.
19:34You did?
19:34I want to eat the whole head.
19:36I love when little kids, like, they see a cake, like, I want the head.
19:40The head's the best part.
19:42It would have been nice if there would have been a head on the cake, but, I mean, you know,
19:45whatever.
19:47Ace of cakes, no head.
19:48I can, that's all right.
19:49I can, that's all right.
19:50The, uh, cake went over really well.
19:53Yeah.
19:54Who else wants a piece of head?
20:00It was fun to meet Drew Carey.
20:02Seems like a very cool guy.
20:03It's the Duke of Cakes.
20:08I'll accept that.
20:09The Duke of Cakes, really.
20:12Awesome cake.
20:12Duke of Cakes.
20:14I got my own song now.
20:16I hoped I would achieve my status as nobility from some other means, not to be forever known
20:24as the Duke of Cakes.
20:28I tried to tell him yesterday that he didn't understand, like, this is going to be his
20:30best birthday party ever, because I don't know how we're going to top it.
20:33Like, when he turns, like, 12, 16, 18, I was going to give him a card.
20:37And I go, I spent it all on your fifth birthday, sorry.
20:40If I punched him right now in the chest, could I pull out a heart?
20:43Uh, try, yeah.
20:44Go for it.
20:45Actually, there's a little fruit roll of a heart in there.
20:48A fruit roll of a heart would have been awesome.
20:49I know.
20:51Now we can.
20:52Drew dug it.
20:53Connor dug it.
20:54You know, it ended up being a cool experience for us.
20:57You dig it?
20:58This is awesome.
20:59Harrison Ford can retire.
