The premier has used his state of the state address to announce plans to slash 250 jobs as part of an overhaul of the department of state growth. The government aims to cut about 250 million dollars from the debt-laden budget by breaking up the multi-agency department.

00:02It's an annual speech where Premiers traditionally talk up Tasmania.
00:06I'm proud and ambitious about where our state is and where we are heading.
00:11Jeremy Rockliffe used the occasion to outline a major bureaucratic shake-up.
00:16Today I'm announcing the Department of State growth will undergo a total transformation.
00:21The Department manages multiple government programs from infrastructure and transport
00:26to housing and planning and tourism and arts.
00:30But over the coming months, it'll be broken up into new agencies,
00:34starting with one that'll be called Building Tasmania.
00:38We'll get things done.
00:39We'll supercharge delivery of the housing, the roads, the infrastructure
00:43our state needs to be fit for the future.
00:46There'll also be a new economic development entity
00:49and another incorporating tourism, events and creative industries.
00:53All up, 250 full-time jobs will go.
00:57Close to a quarter of the department's current workforce.
01:01It will help improve the budget, freeing up more than a quarter of a billion dollars.
01:05This is the first budget savings announcement since Treasury last week warned
01:10that the state's debt levels will rapidly and unsustainably increase
01:15unless the government can find billions of dollars in new savings or revenue.
01:19But there's one thing that the Premier has already ruled out.
01:23We'll not be introducing new or increased taxes.
01:27The Greens say the government is just shuffling the deck chairs
01:30and the opposition says a departmental restructure won't fix the state's problems.
01:36This government lacks ambition, it lacks a plan for the future.
01:39It's run out of ideas, it's run out of the people that got them into government
01:42and now time and excuses is catching up with them.
01:45The government will deliver its state budget in just over two months.
01:49So I do think it's the best fund now for that.
