00:00We've got a really ambitious target, you're right, that 1.5 million new homes over the course of this Parliament.
00:05It's right to have ambitious targets because we need to solve the housing crisis that we inherited.
00:10You've got far too many children who will be going home tonight doing their homework in bed and breakfast.
00:15That is precisely why we need to build more houses. That's what we're going to do.
00:19Now, you wouldn't expect to see a linear trajectory towards that 1.5 million target.
00:26The principal reason being that we had to do a lot of work at the start of this Parliament, which,
00:30by the way, is ongoing,
00:31to try and make sure that the framework, including the planning framework, is right such that we can press ahead
00:38and really build homes with the kind of speed that we need to do so.
00:44So, with the Planning and Infrastructure Act, for example, where we're minimising the rights to challenge new developments,
00:50that's really, really critical. But there are other things too.
00:53So, as I said, you wouldn't expect to see a linear trajectory.
00:55Starts are up. We've made really, really good progress against the target.
00:58We're now hoping that that line on the graph starts going upwards in a faster direction.
