How Three Friends Turned a Small Garage into AMG's Racing Empire!
Transcript
00:00AMG is one of the most prominent tuning companies in the world today.
00:03They have produced some of the fastest and most powerful Mercedes models ever.
00:08And yet they started out as a small garage operation.
00:11So how did this small team of three guys take on Mercedes
00:15and become one of the most successful tuning companies of all time?
00:19This is the story of AMG.
00:21It all started back in 1960 when three friends, Hans-Werner Aufrecht, Erhard Melchior,
00:26and Hans Schiller met while working at an auto shop in the town of Affalterbach,
00:31which, by the way, is where AMG is still headquartered to this day.
00:34The trio soon realized that they shared a passion for cars and decided to start their own business.
00:39Their company was called Motosport.
00:41And instead of selling cars like a normal dealership, they focused more on racing.
00:46They built up a reputation for being able to build fast-race cars
00:50through their involvement in local races, which eventually caught the attention of Mercedes.
00:54In 1965, Mercedes offered them a deal.
00:58They would supply Motosport with the engines and other parts needed to run a 300SL race car.
01:04In return, Motosport would have to provide Mercedes with technical support.
01:08This was great news for Motosport,
01:11as the 300SL was one of the most capable sports cars of its time.
01:15It featured a lightweight aluminum body and a powerful 3.0-liter inline-six engine.
01:21But despite its success, Mercedes had discontinued the production of the 300SL in 1963 due to financial concerns.
01:29This meant that acquiring these engines was going to be difficult.
01:33Thankfully, Mercedes had plenty of M104 engines left over from the 300SL that they could provide to Motosport.
01:39However, getting the rest of the parts would be a challenge since many of the components were unique to the
01:44300SL
01:45and were no longer in production.
01:47Fortunately, Motosport's skilled engineers were up for the task.
01:51So, let's say, thank you.
01:51Well, let's say that you had something about this
