Taiwan's premier told lawmakers the country's trade agreement with the US remains valid after the US Supreme Court overturned Trump’s reciprocal tariffs. But Taipei is seeking assurances from Washington that it will honor the agreement's terms. Opposition lawmakers are also demanding clearer guarantees as well as relief measures for affected industries.

00:01Taiwan's premier is saying its trade agreement with the U.S. is still valid,
00:05but Taipei is seeking assurances from Washington that it will honor its terms.
00:10The premier acknowledged the uncertainty following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling
00:14that overturned Trump's reciprocal tariffs.
00:17But tariffs remain a core part of Trump's policy,
00:20and he will insist on using them just through different legal channels.
00:24Still, the premier tried to convince lawmakers that there is no need to renegotiate the deal.
00:52The lawmakers also called on the government to spell out relief measures
00:56for affected industries especially small and medium-sized enterprises. Even though
01:01high-tech industries make up a big portion of Taiwan's GDP, industries like
01:05agriculture and manufacturing, they employ most of Taiwan's workforce about
01:0980 to 90 percent. So they want the government to take care of these smaller
01:13businesses which will be heavily impacted. Overall, opposition lawmakers are still
01:18uneasy about the uncertainty coming from the US side and the potential that
01:22America can go back on its promises.
01:40The Trump administration has now released its 2026 trade policy agenda, saying the US will finalize deals with Taiwan as
01:49well as several other countries across Asia and central and
01:52South America, enforcing all of its agreements through existing trade laws.
01:56Still, some opposition lawmakers are calling for the Taiwan government to renegotiate its trade deal with Washington, while others are
02:04saying that the government should at least delay its review in the legislature until there's further clarity coming out of
02:10Washington.
