00:01Taiwan's premier is saying its trade agreement with the U.S. is still valid,
00:05but Taipei is seeking assurances from Washington that it will honor its terms.
00:10The premier acknowledged the uncertainty following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling
00:14that overturned Trump's reciprocal tariffs.
00:17But tariffs remain a core part of Trump's policy,
00:20and he will insist on using them just through different legal channels.
00:24Still, the premier tried to convince lawmakers that there is no need to renegotiate the deal.
00:52The lawmakers also called on the government to spell out relief measures
00:56for affected industries especially small and medium-sized enterprises. Even though
01:01high-tech industries make up a big portion of Taiwan's GDP, industries like
01:05agriculture and manufacturing, they employ most of Taiwan's workforce about
01:0980 to 90 percent. So they want the government to take care of these smaller
01:13businesses which will be heavily impacted. Overall, opposition lawmakers are still
01:18uneasy about the uncertainty coming from the US side and the potential that
01:22America can go back on its promises.
01:40The Trump administration has now released its 2026 trade policy agenda, saying the US will finalize deals with Taiwan as
01:49well as several other countries across Asia and central and
01:52South America, enforcing all of its agreements through existing trade laws.
01:56Still, some opposition lawmakers are calling for the Taiwan government to renegotiate its trade deal with Washington, while others are
02:04saying that the government should at least delay its review in the legislature until there's further clarity coming out of
02:10Washington.
