A trade deal will see US tariffs on Taiwanese goods lowered and Taiwan pledging to invest US$500 billion in the United States. But opposition lawmakers are raising concerns that this could move one of Taiwan's biggest industries overseas, and hurt local businesses.

00:00A trade deal with a catch.
00:02The U.S. agrees to lower Taiwan's tariff rate from 20 to 15 percent,
00:08and Taiwan pledges to invest 500 billion dollars in the U.S.
00:12Part of that investment includes 100 billion U.S. dollars from chip giant TSMC.
00:18And some of it will also be used to create industrial clusters,
00:22modeled after Taiwan's own science parks.
00:25But the negotiating team still faces one last major hurdle.
00:28Trade negotiators may have settled on the terms,
00:32but the deal must also be approved in Taiwan's legislature,
00:35and opposition heavyweights are already raising doubts.
00:52In particular, a comment by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is drawing concern.
00:57He says the Trump administration's ultimate goal
01:01is to bring 40 percent of Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain to the U.S.
