Elle FM stands as beacon of hope in conflict-ridden eastern DRC
Transcript
00:07LFM's mid-morning show is on air. While it informs and entertains the residents of Goma,
00:13it has to make do with harsh conditions currently facing local media in an area controlled by the
00:19M23 rebels. When there's a security crisis in an area or when the area is affected by armed
00:28conflict, media providers are among the first victims. We who work in radio and are called
00:34upon to inform the community are also affected. Freedom of expression is a right that must be
00:40guaranteed for all media providers. But this is not currently the case. This is because journalists
00:45find it difficult to remain impartial. Employees of L, which in French translates to she, are often
00:52forced to tread carefully, working hard to keep the citizenry well informed, even as they operate in
00:58a hostile environment. Although conditions are extremely critical, we are not obliged as
01:06journalists to take sides or to show bias in the way we report the news. We are called upon
01:11to continue to inform the population and to be agents of change and peace because that
01:16is what the population also needs.
01:23Radio has always been of paramount importance in everything we do because whatever we may
01:28be unaware of in life, we can find all the information we need on the radio, whether it's religious
01:34information, economic, cultural or political. And that can relieve us of some ignorance or total
01:41ignorance that could affect an entire population. The security situation around Goma appears
01:47to have also driven down listenership and radio sales by extension.
01:52Radio is important because that's how we get our news. But unfortunately we don't sell radios
02:00anymore. We don't know why. But you've noticed that people don't buy radios anymore. Maybe it's
02:06because there's no money in town anymore. Since the conflict here started three years
02:11ago, several journalists have been arrested and others killed. But LFM continues to discharge
02:18its critical functions.
