00:00We begin with breaking news from the Middle East, where Iran is responding with force today to U.S. and
00:06Israeli airstrikes that killed its supreme leader yesterday.
00:10It has launched a wave of missile and drone attacks on Israel and neighboring Arab nations, despite a warning from
00:16U.S. President Donald Trump that any retaliation will have serious consequences.
00:21We are not attacking any country in the region. We have no problem, no issue with our Arab neighbors.
00:30The only thing we are doing is to conduct an act of self-defense against those bases which are being
00:38used by the United States to attack Iran.
00:42Iranian strikes have hit civilian infrastructure across the Middle East region, including this port in Dubai.
00:49Hotels and airports have also been struck, with two deaths reported.
00:57Meanwhile, staff at the Red Crescent offices in Tehran were forced to flee today after Israel carried out a fresh
01:05wave of attacks.
01:07The agency claims the capital has been hit by 60 attacks in 24 hours, leaving 57 people dead.
01:14And Iranian state media has revealed four high-ranking defense officials have also been killed in the U.S.-Israeli strikes.
01:22They include the commander of the elite Revolutionary Guards and the chief of defense staff.
01:28And with Iranian state media confirming that the country's supreme leader died in yesterday's U.S.-Israeli strikes,
01:34let's bring in the CBC's Crystal Gamanzing for more reaction this morning, joining us this morning from Jerusalem.
01:40Crystal, what are we hearing from Iran this morning?
01:45Well, let's start with a statement from President Masoud Pazeshki.
01:48And he had said that at this point, revenge is legitimate.
01:52And he is vowing to revenge the death of the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
01:59That was confirmed, as you said, by Iranian state television today.
02:04In addition to his comments, we also heard from the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament
02:11talking about the fact that the capabilities of Iranian defenses haven't been touched yet,
02:17that there is much more that they can do.
02:20And we heard from Ali Laajani.
02:22He is the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
02:26He said in an interview on Iranian state television that Americans stabbed Iranians in the heart
02:33and that they will, in turn, stab Americans in the heart.
02:38So the rhetoric is being ratcheted up.
02:41The threat of more attacks is clearly being stated here.
02:46Meanwhile, when we look at the civilian reaction in Iran to this news,
02:52we see, at least on state television, an outpouring of sadness.
02:56People dressed in black, walking in the streets, crying as they begin 40 days of national mourning.
03:05They are trying to show this sense of sadness and despair in Iran
03:12with the killing of the Supreme Leader.
03:15On the other hand, there are also images of cheering, of jubilation, of people celebrating the news.
03:24Those images are not getting the highlighted or the attention on state television,
03:31but that isn't necessarily a surprise.
03:34So locally in Iran, there is a mix of reaction, but there is a lot of celebrating going on.
03:42Here in Israel, we are also hearing some reaction.
03:46In Jerusalem, people were talking about the fact that they are happy to see the regime starting to change,
03:55starting to shift.
03:56They say they're not only happy for Iranians, but Israelis as well.
04:02I really feel that right now we're on the good path and that everything is going to be fine,
04:07and I'm so proud of President Trump.
04:09I love him.
04:10I'm also an American, also an Israeli, and thank you very much.
04:14We hope everything will be okay, and God will help us.
04:20That's what we hope.
04:21I want this to end as soon as possible.
04:25For everyone who's been sent to reserves to come home,
04:28for Iran to be able to have a future that it wants, that the people want,
04:37and for us to not continue with these continuous wars.
04:42Now, we don't know how long these military operations will go on for.
04:49Everyone is sort of preparing that they will be a longer-term operation
04:54as opposed to the 12-day war that we saw back in June of last year.
04:59Crystal, what has the Iranian response been today in terms of retaliatory strikes?
05:06Well, we have seen some strong strikes.
05:09In the last little while, there have been a number of air raid alert sirens.
05:13There have been a number of interceptions that have been heard.
05:17But I want to take you to one community that's about 30 kilometers west of Jerusalem.
05:23Bet Shemesh, this is an area where the emergency services are on site, police are on site.
05:29At this point, it is unclear if this is a direct hit from an Iranian missile.
05:37We can't get a good enough sense on the ground.
05:39But the latest coming from emergency officials is that six people have been killed,
05:46more than 20 individuals wounded.
05:49We understand eight buildings were affected in that strike.
05:53Whether it was a direct strike or a falling debris, that is unclear.
05:56But a very, very big scene.
05:59And it is an active scene at this point.
06:02They are trying to get closer in to get a sense of if there are any other individuals who have
06:07been trapped.
06:08These sort of scenes are why officials with the Israel Defense Forces
06:13are encouraging people to pay attention to the warnings, pay attention to the alerts,
06:18and to seek shelter and not to come out until the all clear is given.
06:23Meanwhile, Israel's President Isaac Herzog was in Tel Aviv at the site of another deadly strike.
06:31This strike happened late last night.
06:33It was a direct hit.
06:36A number of buildings destroyed.
06:38The Israeli president there today saying that he feels the pain of people,
06:47but also the strength and resilience of Israelis.
06:52But what undermines peace all the time is terror instigated by this Iranian evil regime.
06:58That's why we're here.
07:00The people of Israel are strong.
07:02The Israeli army is strong.
07:04The American army is strong.
07:05And, of course, our allies are strong.
07:08And let nobody fool himself.
07:10We shall overcome and hopefully bring a new era to the Middle East and Iran.
07:18So those are just two of the sites that people are paying close attention to,
07:24where there have been deaths, there have been injuries.
07:28And people, again, are worried that we will see more scenes like that here in Israel.
07:34Marianne.
07:34Thanks so much for this, Crystal.
07:36The CBC's Crystal Gamansing in Jerusalem.
07:39And for more on this, let's bring in the CBC's Willie Lowry in Washington.
07:43Willie, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social he was adamant about warning Iran against further retaliation.
07:49So what is he saying today?
07:51Yeah, that's right, Marianne.
07:52Another day of kinetic activity in the Middle East.
07:56U.S. President Donald Trump warning Iran to think twice before launching strikes at U.S. forces in the region.
08:04They are, of course, spread out throughout the Middle East with large bases in Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE,
08:13as well as a smaller presence in Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere.
08:18Early this morning, Trump took to social media and said,
08:21Iran just stated that they are going to hit very hard today, harder than they have ever hit before.
08:29And this part is in all capitals letters.
08:32They better not do that, however, because if they do, we will hit them with a force that has never
08:39been seen before.
08:40Thank you for your attention to this matter.
08:43Now, this comes obviously after a day of massive strikes by the U.S. and Israel that killed Iran's supreme
08:50leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
08:52In a post on social media confirming Khamenei's death, Trump described a little bit of what yesterday's military operation looked
09:02like,
09:03but also said that it would continue for the days to come.
09:07He said, quote,
09:08The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue uninterrupted throughout the week or as long as necessary to achieve our
09:18objective of peace throughout the Middle East and indeed the world.
09:22It appears that the administration is hoping that by killing Khamenei, they are creating the opportunity for Iranians to rise
09:31up and take control
09:33and effectively ending the regime that has been in power since 1979.
09:40Meanwhile, we know that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken with G7 foreign ministers.
09:45How did that conversation go?
09:47Yeah, that's right.
09:48Secretary of State Marco Rubio spent much of yesterday working the phones.
09:52He held a call with his G7 counterparts, essentially just updating them on the U.S.-Israel operation.
10:00G7 countries have expressed support for U.S. efforts to ensure that Iran never has the ability to develop a
10:09nuclear weapon.
10:10However, several countries, including Canada, made clear that they were not involved militarily or planning-wise in the operation.
10:20Rubio had actually been planning on traveling to Israel tomorrow.
10:24However, according to a State Department official, that trip has since been canceled as the security situation there remains very
10:32much in flux.
10:34That's Willie Lowry in Washington. Thanks, Willie.
10:38My pleasure.
