00:38about a lady who decided to take it upon herself to knit sort of little outfits
00:45to go over street furniture, to go over bollards,
00:48to cheer up the neighbourhood in South Gloucestershire.

01:16because you've got lampposts and buildings and dead trees and all sorts of things.

13:47I thought I'd just tell you a little bit about my trip to Australia
13:51I worked in Australia for quite a long time in the 1980s
13:55I hosted a daily show on Channel 9
13:59Anyway, consequently I've got lots of friends in Australia
14:01And I go out and see them every year
14:03So this year I decided to go to places I'd never been to before
14:09And I started off on the west coast
14:11And I went first of all to a place called Denmark

14:20And after that I went down to somewhere that looked like Albany

25:01He was hailed as the master of a major medical breakthrough by some
25:06But he was also earmarked as a complete charlatan by others and this was France Anton Mesmer
25:12Who thought that planets had a direct influence on the tissues of the human body?
25:17Which was not a new idea because it's sort of that permeated
25:21Superstition in the Middle Ages etc and beyond that he really believed in this mysterious fluid that flowed through all
25:29Massa and he called this force animal magnetism
25:32Which we use a little bit more loosely these days, but for him it was something very very scientific
25:37Lots of records about the treatment which was quite curious really
25:41And this is for almost any malady that people presented with so patients would join hands and they would sit
25:46in a circle
25:48Around a large tub of sulfuric acid
25:50Apparently and stick it sticking out of this for several iron bars
25:55Which is odd and these bars had been previously touched by mesmer and so they were carrying this animal magnetism
26:03He then proceeded to personally touch each patient and that made them kind of writhe and and sort of squirm
26:10You can imagine this sort of whole circle of kind of complete agitation and chaos and these are supposed to
26:16be crises of the body that then would affect a total cure
26:19That was the idea as you can imagine there was some sort of skeptics
26:24You know who kind of thought hang on. Is this the right thing to do is this is this really
26:28happening?
26:29And King Louis the 16th it was appointed a committee
26:32To investigate mesmer and his so-called remedies and one of those on the committee incidentally was Benjamin Franklin who
26:40as well as being a statesman was also an inventor and scientist himself
26:44Anyway unsurprisingly they concluded that the cures
26:47Want anything to do with this animal magnetism, but it was all about the imagination so it was all psychosomatic
26:53really?
26:55Years later mesmer fled paris. This was in the wake of the french revolution, but it was recognized that what
27:00he promoted was a kind of
27:03Sleepwalking almost some sort of some amulism which was the precursor of hypnosis and in fact
27:08It was one of his disciples who went on to develop his theory and
27:12Developed a proper technique for inducing hypnosis, but his animal magnetism
27:16Although did have some kind of clinical grounding I suppose was steeped in sensationalism and he's not really
27:24Regarded as I say as the true scientist in in the modern sense of the word
27:27Which is why we talk about hypnotism today and not about the mesmerism anymore the
