00:31Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown, this bank holiday Monday, which always means, aside from our wonderful regular viewers, we always
00:38have some people tuning in, maybe for the first time ever or for the first time in a long time
00:43at this stage in a Monday afternoon. So a special welcome to you. It's a bit like a blind date,
00:49isn't it? And surprise, surprise, there's Rachel Riley waiting for me. How are you?
00:53Here's our column with a quick reminder. Quick reminder that indeed on this day in 1943, the late great Cilla
01:00Black was born. Or should I say Cilla Black wasn't born, Priscilla White was born.
01:05Which I love that her stage name's Cilla Black, but her real name's Priscilla White. Back in the day, of
01:10course, it was her amazing singing ability. There's a statue of her right now outside the Cavern Club on stage
01:17with the Beatles there and loads of hits.
01:19But the art generation, of course, it was the TV shows. And, Rach, you can't underestimate how big Blind Date
01:27and Surprise, Surprise were.
01:29Yeah, well, it's funny, you know, it's like a kid of the 90s who knows her from the TV shows
01:32who just kind of missed the whole Beatles and the pop career.
01:35Because I just remember her, like you said, from those ITV shows when there were only four TV channels on
01:40regular TV.
01:41So every Saturday, you know, the whole family would watch her.
01:44Right, let's head over to Dictionary Corner. Of course, there she is, armed with a dictionary and a dream, as
01:49always, our Susie Dent.
01:51And we welcome back to Dictionary Corner. Well, let's hope he lasts longer on this show this week than he
01:56did on Big Brother.
01:59Sorry, I couldn't resist it. Levi Roots is back.
02:01I love this show. I love this show. Absolutely.
02:04And you can't be ejected. That's the good news.
02:07Well, that's good, yes, yeah. Unlike the other one, yes.
02:10Well, listen, you get to meet two new friends today, not one, because Arthur Page, of course, became our eighth
02:15octo-champ of this series on Friday.
02:18So it's two newbies in our midst, Laura and Manuel from Swansea. How are you?
02:24Very good, thank you.
02:25So you teach about teaching now, is that right? What do you tell me?
02:28Yeah, that's right. So I was a primary school teacher for 15 years, and now I've gone into the university
02:33to teach the future teachers how to teach.
02:36I'm the perfect person to do it, because I know you don't like to brag, but were you not primary
02:41school teacher of the year?
02:42Yes, I was very lucky to be nominated and to win a teacher of the year award in our local
02:48area.
02:49So that was thanks to the beautiful parents and the community voting.
02:53You're up against Crono Yun. Welcome to the show, mate.
02:56Thank you, thank you.
02:57Now, when did Countdown come into your world? Because you only moved here in 2022, but I think you'd been
03:03here before studying, is that right?
03:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, did my uni here a long time ago, 2009-ish.
03:08Back then, I really liked the show, and then somehow this time I'm coming back, living in the UK, and
03:13then I want to give it a shot.
03:15Yes, I love that. Crono and Laura, best of luck to both of you today.
03:2015 rounds, don't worry about nerves, they will settle down on both of you, and you will have the time
03:24of your life.
03:25So off you go, Laura.
03:26Hi, Rachel. A consonant, please.
03:28Thank you, Laura.
03:29I'll start today with S.
03:32A vowel, please.
03:33A.
03:35Consonant.
03:36R.
03:37And another consonant.
03:39S.
03:40And a vowel, please.
03:41E.
03:42A consonant.
03:44G.
03:45And another consonant.
03:48S, another one.
03:49And another consonant.
03:51T.
03:52And a final vowel, please.
03:54And a final O.
03:55Goodness me, at home and in the studio. Let's play Countdown.
03:59And a final vowel.
04:04And a vowel and there's noeh to word.
04:04And another consonant.
04:18And a vowel sounds to the 곡.
04:18And a vowel and the vowel sounds to the where it's like a vowel.
04:18So the vowel and the vowel and the vowel of the tongue is like a fellow.
04:18So the vowel sounds and then let's go ahead andohner.
04:18And aруж ت all Ё接.
04:18And another vowel.
04:18And another vowel sounds to the Actually.
04:22I went to the T慣 term.
04:28MUSIC PLAYS
04:29Time's up. Laura, how many?
04:31Seven.
04:31Chrono?
04:32Seven.
04:32Two sevens to start. Laura?
04:34Storage.
04:35Storage and chrono.
04:36Stagers.
04:37And stagers.
04:38Yes. So stager is in the dictionary.
04:41And we're just wondering whether Laura did the right thing
04:43and left the S off storage.
04:45And I think she did do the right thing, actually,
04:47because it's a mass now.
04:49Well, I won't be happy, Levi and Susie,
04:51unless you give me a word with all three S's in it.
04:54I'm very excited.
04:55Come on.
04:56Yes, absolutely, we can.
04:57We've worked something together.
04:58We've got grossest.
05:00Grossest.
05:01Yeah, that would give you an eight.
05:03Well done.
05:04APPLAUSE
05:08Let's get more letters.
05:09Chrono, it's your go.
05:11Hello, Rachel.
05:11Can I have a consonant, please?
05:13You may indeed start with N.
05:16Another.
05:18V.
05:19A vowel.
05:22E.
05:23Another vowel.
05:24O.
05:25A consonant.
05:27T.
05:28A vowel.
05:29A.
05:31A consonant.
05:32B.
05:34A vowel.
05:36U.
05:37And a consonant, please.
05:38Lastly, S.
05:40And 30 seconds.
05:41Contact.
05:42You may be.
05:58Good night.
05:59You may be.
05:59Good night.
06:09You may be.
06:10Good night.
06:10You may be.
06:10Good night.
06:11Any people you will be here.
06:12Crono, how many, mate?
06:13Six.
06:14Six from you, Laura?
06:15Six.
06:15Well done, both of you.
06:16Crono?
06:17Butane.
06:18Butane, yes.
06:19And for you, Laura?
06:20Battens.
06:22And battens.
06:23Yeah, both of those good.
06:25Anything else there for me, Levi?
06:27Novates.
06:28Yeah.
06:29Yeah, Novates, that's a legal term.
06:31It means to exchange contracts,
06:33or at least to put one contract in place of another.
06:35And actually, there is an eight there from biology.
06:38Sub-ovate.
06:39S-U-B-O-V-A-T-E.
06:41And it means somewhat ovate or egg-shaped.
06:44And is there only one type of butane gas
06:46you can't pop the S on?
06:48I think that, too, will be a mass noun.
06:51It is, yeah.
06:52So they're doing very well with their plurals,
06:54or abstention from plurals.
06:55Wow, making the right decisions every step of the way.
06:58That's why it's 13 points all.
07:00Well done to both of you.
07:01Let's see how the numbers work out.
07:03Laura?
07:03Two large and four small, please.
07:05Thank you, Laura.
07:06First numbers of the week.
07:08Two from the top and the four little ones
07:09are six, six, nine, one.
07:15And the large one, 75 and 25.
07:17And you need to reach 759.
07:21759.
07:22My numbers up.
07:537-5-9. Laura?
07:557-5-7.
07:57Two away. And Crono?
07:597-5-6.
08:00Three away. Laura, a little glimmer of light here for seven points.
08:059 plus 1 is for the 10.
08:07Yep.
08:08Times 75 for 750, plus 6, plus 1.
08:13You've already used this one, I'm afraid.
08:15So you got to 7-5-6, and then that's...
08:18I wonder, is that where Crono's at? Off you go.
08:22Yeah, 1 plus 9 and 10, and then 75 and then 1-6 to it.
08:25Yeah. There you go.
08:27Well done, you got the seven points.
08:29Of course, if you had the decency just to turn one of those sixes upside down,
08:32it would have been really easy.
08:33But how do you get to 7-5-9?
08:35Not in this game, Cole.
08:37If you say 6 minus 1 is 5, you can times it by the other six for 30,
08:42times that by 25 for 750, and add on the 9-7-5-9.
08:47Ah, done.
08:50Brilliant. Well done if you got that at home.
08:52Let's get our first tea time teaser to get us through the break.
08:55It's Sid Steele.
08:57Sid Steele.
08:58And that's double E for anyone who's visually impaired.
09:01The water may be sparkling, but it's definitely still.
09:04The water may be sparkling, but it's definitely still.
09:22The water may be sparkling, but it's definitely still tideless, tideless.
09:27Our first tea time teaser of the week.
09:30Right, two newbies in our midst today.
09:32A new champion will be crowned.
09:34Who will it be, Laura or Crono?
09:3612 rounds to go.
09:37And Crono, you're up with the letters, mate.
09:39May I have a consonant, please?
09:40Thank you, Crono.
10:05And Vowel, please.
10:07Lastly, A.
10:10Thank you, Rachel.
10:11Thank you, Rachel.
10:42Give me a number, Crono.
10:43Seven.
10:44And Laura?
10:45Six.
10:45Yes, what's the six?
10:47Ascent.
10:48And the seven?
10:49Beacons.
10:49Beacons.
10:50Very nice.
10:51Well spotted.
10:52Anything else there for me, Levi?
10:54We couldn't get beyond a seven, actually.
10:56Not any further.
10:57Good as it gets.
10:58Good as it gets.
11:00Laura, let's go again.
11:01A consonant, please.
11:03Thank you, Laura.
11:04M.
11:05And another?
11:07N.
11:07A vowel, please.
11:09I.
11:10And another?
11:11U.
11:12And a consonant?
11:14P.
11:15Consonant, please.
11:17R.
11:18Vowel?
11:20I.
11:21A consonant?
11:23G.
11:24And another consonant, please.
11:26Lastly, N.
11:28Half a minute, y'all.
11:30Oh, God.
11:31I.
11:32I.
11:42I.
12:00What are you saying, Crona?
12:01Seven. Seven from you. What are you saying, Laura?
12:04Eight. Risky eight. What's the seven, Crona?
12:06Pruning. Yes, pruning. And Laura?
12:09Umpiring. Oh, umpiring. What a spot.
12:12Absolutely brilliant. Well done.
12:15There's no risk there at all. No. Very good indeed.
12:18Got it, I didn't see that. Got it, I didn't see that. Well done.
12:22Umpiring for eight. Was there a magic nine?
12:25The letters were interesting. They were interesting.
12:28But no, no nine from us. Umpiring best.
12:32Yeah. 21-27. So look at that.
12:35Laura claws back a massive eight points there.
12:38So, Crona, you get to choose the numbers,
12:40so you're in control of your own fate here, my friend.
12:42One large and five small, please.
12:44Thank you, Crona. One from the top. Colin is happy.
12:46Yes. You've picked his favourite selection.
12:49Let's see if this particular one is.
12:51The numbers.
12:52Seven, eight, three, nine, seven, and 75.
12:59And then target to reach 294.
13:02294. Numbers up.
13:03That's right.
13:31David Osborner says...
13:33A whole part with no manual prophecy
13:34Crono 294 294 well done and Laura 293 oh what a way there you go Crono you can
13:40get those points back with interest here we go yeah seven minus three is four
13:44yep and then times 75 is 300 it is and then nine minus eight is one seven minus
13:51one is six take it away 294 perfect
13:57well Laura he hasn't got your letters but he's got your number so far that's
14:02gonna have to change all right it's at 37 plus 21 the numbers have been telling
14:06so far as we get our first chat of the week with our Levi roots I mean so much
14:12always to talk to you about and I can't wait for this week but the freshest
14:15thing yes is that you were in this reboot of Big Brother brother yeah so we were
14:20we were loving it when we saw you pop up um can I tell you a funny story going in
14:25so I got an email like on a Thursday right from Big Brother can you do a

14:36countdown studio we'll film something the three of us yeah you'd already been
14:40voted on it was good but I tell you what Colin I've nominated you as one of the
14:46next persons to go in so you might get another call
14:48is this get paid to set a ride yeah I mean I mean but it was a fantastic
14:54opportunity for me again you know I always wanted to challenge myself and
14:58that's certainly the challenge so I suppose the question is what was it like
15:02in there there's no phones you don't have no internet no nothing you can't see
15:08outside unless they send you outside no clocks no watches you know it was really
15:14it was like a was an experiment in you in you in human behavior yeah but there
15:20was lots of nice moments I I always said it's a it was bittersweet moments in
15:24there lots of sweets some of the people I really enjoyed was obviously Sharon yeah
15:29you know Sharon was like the most amazing mother who came up and touched me on
15:33the shoulder and before I knew it I went in thinking that I'm this kind of a
15:37hardcore raster man that never cries every time Sharon touched me I completely blubbered
15:45her like like a spoiled child as soon as I got home my my first thing my son said to
15:50me is dad you cry baby experienced me crying so much it was it was a moment that
15:57brought out you know the hina parts of you yeah I mean other great moments was
16:02cooking I was at home in the kitchen as you know I was you know I was absolutely
16:07elated to be in the kitchen but would I do it again I'll leave you as long as
16:15these two don't come with me because I have to keep them for the other ones we
16:22would strictly Susie's going into the jungle we're not allowed to say but you
16:26know she'll be going in the jungle I didn't even know that myself I'll do big
16:29brother that'll be the three and then we're done it was a lovely show I really

17:43Wow, that's time, Laura.
17:46Just a five.
17:47Crono. Five.
17:48Yeah, it might be as good as it gets, Laura, not just a five.
17:51That might be it. What have you got?
17:52It's a gloomy five death.
17:53Yeah. Crono. Oxide.
17:56An oxide. Oxide, absolutely fine as well.
17:59Yeah, both of those good.
18:00Nice, yeah, there's loads of taxed...
18:02I've got so many fives written down here.
18:05Anything above that?
18:06Yeah, we've got a couple of sevens.
18:08Yeah, we have. Oxide is good, but you could also have had oxidate.
18:11Ah! For seven.
18:15Yeah, oxidation.
18:16And one strange one, talk about cathodes, negatively charged electrodes,
18:20you can actually spell it with a K as a variant of C,
18:23the one with a C, yeah, so that will get you to another seven.
18:26Well done, you two showing off. Love it.
18:27Right, more letters, please. Crono.
18:30May I have a consonant, please?
18:32Thank you, Crono.

19:38Just a six.
19:39Well, it might count. What have you got?
19:41Slimy.
19:42Yes, I love that. Slimy and slimed and all those childish words are brilliant.
19:47Crono, what are you going for?
19:49Unslide.
19:50Unslide.
19:51To unslide.
19:53That's not there, I'm afraid.
19:56And how are you spelling slimy?
19:57I've put an E in.
19:59That's not there either.
20:00I just have to disallow both, I'm afraid.
20:01Slimed would have been all right.
20:03Slimed.
20:04Get slimed like a Ghostbusters.
20:06Yes.
20:06Yeah.
20:07Good point.
20:09To unslide's a strange one, like as in to climb back up a slide.
20:12You know, I'm not sure how that's going to work, really.
20:14You used to have lost it.
20:16What do we have, Levi?
20:17Yeah, we've got an eight, haven't we?
20:19Yes.
20:20Muslin, and I'm sure Susie will explain.
20:23Cloth.
20:24It's a cloth.
20:24Exactly, yes.
20:25It's a cloth.
20:26A muslin dress, for example.
20:28And we had snidely for a nice seven.
20:31Yes.
20:3242.26 then.
20:35It's as you were as we get our third numbers round from you, Laura.
20:38Two large and four small, please.
20:40Thank you, Laura.
20:40Two from the top, four more little ones.
20:43And third time lucky.
20:45These numbers.
20:46Seven, eight, six, ten, 125.
20:52And the target, 202.
20:54Two or two.
20:55Numbers up.
20:56One is a dog, two.
21:02One is a dog.
21:04One is a dog.
21:10One is a guy who's事 and a dog.
21:11Two is a dog.
21:15In the crowd.
21:16It's a dog.
21:19One is a dog.
21:20Two is Jim Kelly.
21:21Two is a dog.
21:22One is a dog.
21:25One is a dog.
21:25One is a dog.
21:262-0-2, the target, Laura.
21:302-0-2? Yes.
21:32Not confident.
21:34Good to admit it. Crono?
21:362-0-2. OK, and confident, by the way.
21:38You didn't even need to say it, Laura, right?
21:40Off we go.
21:4225 times 10.
21:4325. You should be confident.
21:468 times 6 for 48.
21:48Take it away for 2-0-2.
21:5010 confident points.
21:52Yes. Crono?
21:53I'm doing differently. 7-6 is 1.
21:57Yep.
21:58100 plus 1 is 101.
22:00101.
22:01And then 10-8 is 2.
22:03Yep.
22:04And then times them together.
22:052-0-2. Lovely.
22:08Two different ways to get there.
22:11The outcome the same.
22:1210 points each.
22:13So still close enough to keep you tuned
22:15all the way to the end of this bank holiday countdown.
22:18So let's get your second tea time teaser
22:20before the big run-in.
22:21It's Get Realm.
22:22Get Realm.
22:24You get a letter from the head of the realm
22:26on your special birthday.
22:28You get a letter from the head of the realm
22:30on your special birthday.
22:52Get Realm becomes Telegram, which you get on,
22:55is it Susie, on your 100th birthday?
22:57You get one.
22:58There you go.
22:59I haven't got it yet, Cole, just in case I'm wondering.
23:01Yeah.
23:02I realise how rude that sounded.
23:03I wasn't checking when you got yours at all.
23:06No, it's another six years until that.
23:08Let's get more letters now, Crono.
23:11It's on you.
23:12We have a consonant, please, Rachel.
23:13You may.

24:17A lot going on there, Crono?
24:18Just a five.
24:19A five from you, Laura.
24:20I've as well.
24:21Yeah, it was all sort of half words in there.
24:23What did you get?
24:24Flags.
24:25Flags, very good.
24:25Faze.
24:27And phase.
24:28Yep.
24:29It was tough, this one.
24:30We just managed a couple of sixes.
24:32Yeah, gospel was perhaps the best of the sixes.
24:35And that's it?
24:36Yeah.
24:36Galosh.
24:37I've got one galosh.
24:38I was expecting so much more.
24:40I'm sorry.
24:40It's not your fault, it's the dictionary's fault.
24:42It's nothing we can do.
24:44Let's get back to it then.
24:45All the play for Laura.
24:47A consonant, please.
24:48Thank you, Laura.
24:49W.
24:50And another.
24:51T.

25:33And another consonant, please.
25:33And another consonant, please.
25:33And another consonant, please.
25:33And another consonant, please.
25:33And another consonant, please.
25:34And another consonant, please.
25:35And another consonant, please.
25:35And another consonant, please.
25:36And another consonant, please.
25:36And another consonant, please.
25:37And another consonant, please.
25:38And another consonant, please.
25:39THEY CONFER
25:45Goodness me, Laura. Another five.
25:48And Crono. Another five.
25:50No, listen, they're just strange little groups of letters we're getting at the moment.
25:53What have you got? Manic. Manic and Crono.
25:57Antic. Antic and Manic. Yep, both very good.
26:00I don't have anything better than five here either. What did you get?
26:03A nice seven we've got, haven't we? Picante.
26:06Right, that gap's been the same for a while now, hasn't it?
26:10So it's very close indeed between Crono and Laura.
26:13Two challengers today as we cross over for our first Origins of Words of the Week.
26:17Where are we going? Yeah, I'm going to start with a word that is always on my top ten.
26:23When people say, what's your favourite word?
26:26Obviously, I have ones which sound beautiful, like mellifluous,
26:29I think is on a lot of people's lists.
26:30But this one always surprises people. It's blurb.
26:33I suppose because I worked in publishing and I write a few books here and there,
26:39and so I'm used to the blurb, which is the sort of promotional stuff on a book cover, very often.
26:45And the reason I love it is, A, it sounds great, but also it is one of the very few
26:50words
26:50where we know its precise birthday, which is a real rarity when you are an etymologist.
26:56And it was created by a US humorist called Gillette Burgess.
27:01And he announced it at an annual dinner of the American Booksellers Association in 1907.
27:07And at this dinner, he gave each guest a copy of his own book, which was called Are You a
27:12Bromide?
27:12Now, bromide is a sedative, and it's used also metaphorically for any kind of trite statement that's supposed to just
27:21placate to somebody, really.
27:23So Are You a Bromide was passed around, and it had a dust jacket especially printed for the occasion.
27:29And on it were the words,
27:32Yes, this is a blurb.
27:35And beneath it was a picture of a woman cupping her hand and obviously shouting something.
27:40And a caption with her name.
27:42And this is the crucial bit.
27:43Miss Belinda Blurb in the act of blurbing.
27:47In other words, she was telling everybody how brilliant this book was.
27:50And this is where guests could read,
27:53When you've read, in capital letters, this masterpiece, you'll know what a book is.
27:58So it was obviously satirical.
28:00It was clearly very, very silly.
28:03But blurb and Miss Belinda Blurb really caught on.
28:07And so any hyperbole or praise for a book that you will find on its back covers is now duly
28:11called a blurb.
28:13Nice.
28:14APPLAUSE
28:16Four rounds to go, headlines still to be written.
28:19Crono, it's your letters.
28:21May I have a consonant, please?
28:22Thank you, Crono.

30:01consonant. L. Vowel, please. E. And another vowel, please. And a final O. On the last letters.
30:44Time's up, Laura. Six. Six from you, Crono. Seven. Seven, this would blow it wide open, Laura.
30:51Stolen. Stolen, are you going to steal the points? Noodles. Noodles! Well done. Yes!
31:00I can't believe it. For all the noodling I've been doing here, I didn't even see noodles or noodles.
31:05Very good indeed. You must have got that, Levi, as a chef. You must have got it.
31:09Yes, we did, yeah, but there's also a nine. First nine of the week?
31:13Yeah. Loadstone. Such a beautiful word. Yes, a loadstone, which is a kind of magnetised
31:19mineral often used as a magnet. Ah, brilliant.
31:24And that will get the job done for Crono. That's more than 20 points ahead with 20 points
31:29left, but let's enjoy them, Crono. Final numbers. Six more, please. Six more, why not?
31:34A little bit of practice when the pressure is off. And the six little ones to finish the
31:38day are eight, ten, five, ten, nine, and nine. This could be tricky. The target, 693.
31:48Six, nine, three. Number's up.
31:50And the four.
31:52One.
32:03Two.
32:07Fimble house.
32:08Two.
32:09One.
32:11One.
32:14Two.
32:22693. Crono?
32:23693. Yes. And Laura?
32:25No, last step. Missed it, yes.
32:27Along with countless hundreds of thousands of others.
32:30But Crono, you got this quite comfortably. Off you go.
32:329 times 6 is 72.
32:35Sorry, I said 72? No, sorry. 9 times 8 is 72.
32:379 and 8 is 72.
32:39Plus the 5 is 77. 77.
32:41Times the 9. Perfect. Well done.
32:43Brilliant.
32:46Crono, you've really settled in well as this show's progressed.
32:49One more round to go.
32:51Laura, let's go strong to the end.
32:53Ten points still up for grabs.
32:54Let's get your fingers on the buzzers, please.
32:56It's Monday afternoon and this is our Countdown Conundrum.
33:15BELL RINGS
33:16Laura?
33:18I don't think it's a word, but I may as well have a go.
33:21Gibbering?
33:22Gibbering. Being a gibbering wreck.
33:24We've had many of those on Countdown.
33:26Let's have a look.
33:28It's there.
33:32Listen, Laura, what a way to go out.
33:34You know, to get that conundrum is absolutely sensational.
33:37And also, when you're Primary School Teacher of the Year,
33:39everything else is downhill from there anyway.
33:41You know what I mean?
33:41You've done it.
33:42You've done it.
33:43At Crono, I think that is as low a score as you're going to get
33:46because you just got better and better.
33:48And that last number was brilliant.
33:50Well done to you.
33:50You're a champion and we'll see you tomorrow.
33:53Excellent.
33:53All done, Levi, Susie.
33:54See you tomorrow.
33:55Let's go.
33:56Tomorrow.
33:56And, Rachel, buying holiday Monday.
33:58Today's the day.
33:59You'll see it all over the news tonight
34:01where all the nutcases roll the cheese down the hill in Gloucester.
34:05You're going?
34:06No chance.
34:06I'll be a gibbering wreck.
34:08You're allowed to do vegan cheese.
34:10The vegan cheese roll.
34:11I love that idea.
34:13I love that idea.
34:14Well, listen, we're going to hear.
34:15Back tomorrow, same time, same place.
34:17It's Rachel, Susie and I.
